Best Places to Visit in Udaipur

City Palace
The heart of Udaipur's royal identity. A vast complex of courtyards, balconies, museums and mirror work overlooking Lake Pichola, built over 400 years, so every section has its own character. The views from the Badi Mahal balcony and the crystal gallery in Fateh Prakash Palace are the highlights. Go slow here, this is not a quick photo stop. Plan 2 to 3 hours. Entry is around 300 rupees for adults, and a guide or audio tour adds real value.

Lake Pichola and Sunset Boat Ride
Udaipur's signature experience and part of every good Udaipur trip package. The city looks different from the water. Softer, golden, almost cinematic. Sunset boat rides run from multiple ghats between 4 PM and 6:30 PM, with longer routes stopping at Jag Mandir island. The full experience takes 60 to 90 minutes. Costs run 400 to 700 rupees per person depending on the boat. Book the 5 PM or 5:30 PM slot for the best light on the palace walls.

Jag Mandir
An island palace in Lake Pichola with a calm royal atmosphere. Beautiful marble work, elephant sculptures at the entrance and gardens that feel removed from city noise. You reach it only by boat, usually included in the longer Lake Pichola rides. The architecture blends Persian influence with Rajput style, and the island has a restaurant if you want to linger. A lovely 30 minutes of complete peace in the middle of the lake.

Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace
A hilltop palace 900 feet above the city, built in 1884 as a monsoon retreat. The 20 minute drive up passes through Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary. The views span the whole city, the lakes and the Aravalli hills, and turn golden at sunset. In monsoon, clouds sometimes sit below the palace. Entry is around 80 rupees plus vehicle charges. Reach 90 minutes before sunset for the best experience.

Fateh Sagar Lake
A peaceful lakeside stretch north of the city, perfect for evening walks and calm photo stops. Less crowded than Lake Pichola. The lake has three islands, one housing Nehru Garden, reachable by boat. Local families come here in the evenings for corn, ice cream and chai from the promenade vendors. Come here for Udaipur's slow life. Sunset at Fateh Sagar is quieter and more personal than the famous spots.

Saheliyon Ki Bari
A garden built in the 1700s for the royal queen and her 48 companions. Lotus pools, marble pavilions, elephant fountains and shaded pathways. The fountains still run on the original rainwater system, with no electricity. A pleasant green break between palaces and stone architecture, ideal for families and couples. Entry is around 50 rupees. Mid morning between 9 AM and 11 AM stays the least crowded.

Jagdish Temple
A striking 17th century Vishnu temple in the heart of the old city. Three storeys of Indo Aryan architecture with detailed carvings on every surface and stone elephants at the gate. The lanes around it buzz with flower sellers, incense shops and daily prayers. This is Udaipur beyond tourism, where spiritual life continues regardless of visitors. Free entry. Visit early morning or around the 6 to 7 PM aarti, and remove shoes before climbing.

Bagore Ki Haveli
An 18th century haveli on Gangaur Ghat, now a museum of royal costumes, jewellery, musical instruments and paintings across parts of its 100 plus rooms. The evening Dharohar cultural show at 7 PM features Rajasthani folk dance, music and puppetry, and is a favourite with kids. The rooftop gives lovely lake views. Entry is around 100 rupees, with the show ticketed separately. Plan 60 to 90 minutes including the show, and reach early for good seats.

Old City Markets Around Hathi Pol and Bada Bazaar
The real pulse of Udaipur lives in these markets. Hathi Pol specialises in miniature paintings, embroidered fabrics and silver jewellery. Bada Bazaar covers spices, mojris, leather bags and Rajasthani puppets. Shop slowly and bargain politely but firmly. Starting prices usually sit 40 to 50 percent above final. Best visited between 5 PM and 8 PM when the energy peaks and the heat drops. Keep cash handy, many small shops do not accept cards.

Day Trip to Kumbhalgarh Fort and Ranakpur Jain Temples
If you have an extra day in your Udaipur tour package, this adds real depth. Kumbhalgarh Fort sits 85 km from Udaipur, about 2 hours, with the second longest wall in the world stretching 36 km along the Aravallis. Ranakpur sits another hour away. Its marble Jain temple holds 1,444 pillars and no two carvings are alike. The full circuit takes 10 to 12 hours including travel, so start by 7 AM. This day gives you fort history and temple architecture together.
Best Things to Do in Udaipur

Take a Sunset Boat Ride on Lake Pichola
If you do only one thing, do this. It is romantic, calm and the most Udaipur moment you will carry home. Book the 5 PM slot for the best light.

Plan a Heritage Morning at City Palace
Go early to beat the crowds and the heat. Walk slowly, take breaks in the courtyards and let the architecture sink in. A guide makes the stories come alive.

Watch Sunset from Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace
Udaipur at sunset is a different city. The light turns soft, the lakes glow and the skyline feels royal. Reach the top 90 minutes before sunset.

Do a Slow Old City Walk
Walk the lanes near Jagdish Temple, stop for chai, browse small art shops and enjoy the texture of the city. Give this walk an unhurried two hours.

Enjoy a Lakeside Cafe Evening
Udaipur evenings are made for quiet conversations and slow meals, especially for couples. At least one dinner should be on a rooftop facing Lake Pichola.

Shop for Miniature Paintings and Handicrafts
Pick up miniature paintings, textiles and small gifts from Hathi Pol and Bada Bazaar. Buy from artist run studios and take your time comparing before you pay.

Add a Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur Day Trip
Perfect if you want something beyond the city. Bigger landscapes, deeper history and a full day road experience. Start early and give it the whole day.
