Two passes, four months, and a road trip that still feels untouched. The first sight of Gonbo Rangjon, rising alone out of the Kargyak plain like a mountain that decided where to stand, is one of those moments travellers come back from Zanskar talking about. So is the cluster of cave windows of Phugtal Monastery, appearing in the cliff face above the Lungnak river. So is the slow descent from Shinku La, when the road drops you into the upper Zanskar plain for the first time. Zanskar is one of the harder Himalayan road trips, and it stays open for only four months a year. With the Darcha to Padum road becoming steadily more drivable in recent seasons, you can now reach the valley from Manali in two days, instead of taking the longer Kargil approach that was the only option for years. You can also reach Zanskar Valley from Kashmir via Srinagar, Sonamarg, Zoji La, and Kargil, or fly into Leh and drive via Kargil and Pensi La. Every Zanskar Valley tour package on this page is built by people who run the route. We plan, drive, and support these trips every season, from Delhi, Chandigarh, Manali, Srinagar, and Leh start points, with route guidance that comes from doing it rather than reading about it. Why Choose Travel Coffee for Your Zanskar Valley Tour We are a Himachal based travel company, and most of our drivers, planners, and trip captains come from the same hills that lead into Zanskar. We have been running Zanskar trips every season since the Manali side route became regularly drivable, and the difference shows up from the first kilometre. What Makes Our Zanskar Tour Packages Different Manali based fleet and supplier network. Our Tempo Travellers, drivers, and Jispa stay partners are part of our own setup, not booked through middlemen. Route familiarity on both sides. Our team runs Shinku La and Pensi La crossings every season, so the route plan is based on current conditions, not last year's information. Padum and Purne stays held in advance. Beds in Zanskar are limited. We block rooms at named partners in Padum and Purne weeks before the season starts. Vehicle relay setup. We use a Tempo Traveller from Manali to Jispa for comfort, then switch to 4x4 SUVs (Force Gurkha, Mahindra Bolero) for the rougher Darcha to Padum stretch. Buffer day built in. Every Manali side itinerary holds a day at Jispa for weather variance on Shinku La. The pass closes for a day or two even in peak season, and we plan for that. Oxygen and medical kit in every vehicle. Standard, not an add on. Real human support on WhatsApp. Your trip captain and our office team stay reachable through the trip, even when you don't have signal in Padum. What Makes Zanskar Valley Different Zanskar is one of the last places in India where the silence still has weight. The valley sits between Kashmir and Ladakh , ringed by the Zanskar Range, and stays cut off from the world for seven months of the year. When the roads open in June, the whole valley feels like it has been holding its breath. You won't find a five star hotel here. You'll find ancient cave monasteries, water you cross with your wheels in the river, and a standalone mountain that locals consider sacred. That's the trade. Two seasonal entry passes. Shinku La (5,091 m) from the Manali side, Pensi La (4,400 m) from the Kargil side Padum at the centre. The only town with markets and basic medical infrastructure Ancient Buddhist heartland. Phugtal, Karsha, Stongdey, Sani, monasteries that pre-date most of Europe Gonbo Rangjon. A free-standing mountain near Kargyak considered sacred by locals Drang Drung Glacier. Visible from Pensi La on the Kargil to Padum drive Genuine remoteness. Limited connectivity, basic stays, no luxury infrastructure A road trip that still feels under-explored. Compared with Spiti or central Ladakh, Zanskar sees a fraction of the traffic Zanskar Valley Tour Packages We Offer Zanskar is not a one size destination. The valley sits between two access routes, takes between 8 and 11 days to do properly, and looks very different on a bike versus in a family SUV. Below are the trip formats we run most often. 8N/9D Manali to Zanskar to Manali Circuit. Our flagship. Atal Tunnel, Jispa, Shinku La, Padum, Phugtal, return via the same route. Delhi to Delhi version available. 10N/11D Leh in, Manali out Grand Expedition. Covers both routes in one trip. Fly into Leh, drive via Kargil and Pensi La to Padum, exit through Shinku La to Manali. 10N/11D Srinagar in, Manali out Kashmir to Zanskar Expedition. Start from Srinagar, drive through Sonamarg, Zoji La, Kargil, cross Pensi La into Padum, exit via Shinku La to Manali. Combines Kashmir and Zanskar in one epic road trip. Zanskar Valley Group Tour Packages. Fixed departure shared format for solo travellers, friends, and small groups. See our Zanskar Valley tour packages . Zanskar Valley Private and Family Tour. Custom dates, private vehicle, family friendly pacing. See our Ladakh family tour packages . Zanskar Valley Bike Trip. Royal Enfield Himalayan with a backup vehicle and mechanic. See our Ladakh tour packages for bike expedition options. Zanskar 4x4 SUV Expedition. Small group, expedition style, with vehicle briefing and driver support. Manali to Jispa to Shinku La Short Trip. A 4 to 5 day taster of the Lahaul side approach. Start Point Options for Your Zanskar Trip Where you start matters in Zanskar more than in most destinations, because the valley is at the end of a long drive from either end. From Delhi (Our Default) Most of our Zanskar Valley tour packages from Delhi run Delhi to Delhi. You take an overnight Volvo to Manali on day one, start the road trip on day two, and return the same way. Pickup and drop are typically arranged at Kashmere Gate or Majnu Ka Tila. From Chandigarh For travellers in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, we run a Chandigarh to Chandigarh variant. The drive from Chandigarh to Manali takes around 7 to 8 hours, saving a night of bus travel compared to the Delhi option. From Manali (Skip the Bus) If you are already in Himachal, we start the trip directly from Manali. Day 1 begins at your Manali hotel, and the trip ends back in Manali. This saves two nights of overnight travel each way. From Srinagar / Kashmir You can reach Zanskar Valley from Kashmir via the Srinagar to Kargil highway through Sonamarg and Zoji La. From Kargil, the road continues via Suru Valley and Rangdum to Pensi La and then Padum. This route is ideal for travellers who want to combine a Kashmir holiday with a Zanskar expedition. The Srinagar to Kargil stretch is well-maintained and takes about 6 to 8 hours. Total drive time from Srinagar to Padum is typically split over two days with an overnight halt at Kargil or Rangdum. From Leh (Fly In, Road Out) For travellers from South or West India, flying into Leh is usually faster. Zanskar can be reached from Leh via Kargil and Pensi La in two driving days with an overnight at Kargil. We build the Grand Expedition around this, with acclimatization days in Leh before the road journey begins. See our Leh Ladakh tour packages for combined options. Tell us your start city when you write in, and we will plan the best version of the trip for your group. Manali Entry, Leh Entry, or Kashmir Entry: Which Zanskar Route is Better Zanskar gives you a real choice of three approach routes. You can drive in from Manali via Shinku La, fly into Leh and approach from Kargil via Pensi La, or start from Srinagar in Kashmir and reach Kargil via Zoji La. All routes end at Padum. Each one feels like a different trip. Manali Route via Shinku La The newer, harder approach. You drive from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, overnight at Jispa to acclimatize, cross Shinku La at around 5,091 metres, then descend into the upper Zanskar plain. The road has improved but still has rough sections and occasional water crossings. This is the route bikers, road trippers, and travellers driving from Delhi or Chandigarh usually pick. Leh Route via Pensi La The older, gentler approach. You fly into Leh , acclimatize, drive through Kargil and the Suru Valley, then cross Pensi La at around 4,400 metres. Better roads, friendlier altitude curve, and Drang Drung Glacier views from the pass. Best for families, first timers, and travellers flying in from South India. Kashmir Route via Srinagar and Kargil Zanskar can be reached from Kashmir by driving from Srinagar through Sonamarg and over Zoji La to Kargil, then continuing via Suru Valley and Pensi La to Padum. This route lets you combine the Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens, and Gulmarg experience with the raw remoteness of Zanskar in a single trip. The Srinagar to Kargil highway is well-maintained and gives you a gradual transition from the lush Kashmir valley into the arid Ladakhi landscape. Best for travellers who want two Himalayan experiences in one journey. Quick Recommendation Driving from North India? Manali route. Flying in with kids or seniors? Leh route. Want to combine Kashmir with Zanskar? Srinagar route. Riding a bike? Manali in and Leh out, which is our 10 night Grand Expedition. Suggested Zanskar Valley Itinerary Options We run four core itinerary shapes. Want a custom Zanskar Valley itinerary ? We build plans for couples, families, and friend groups on your dates. How to Reach Zanskar Valley Zanskar Valley can be reached by road from three directions, each with its own character, difficulty, and scenery. There is no direct air link to Zanskar, so every trip involves a multi-day drive from the nearest highway or airport. From Manali via Shinku La (Himachal Side) Manali to Atal Tunnel to Jispa to Darcha to Shinku La to Purne to Padum. Typically motorable July to early October, subject to weather. The fastest approach from North India, taking two driving days with an overnight at Jispa. From Leh via Kargil and Pensi La (Ladakh Side) Leh to Kargil to Suru Valley to Rangdum to Pensi La to Padum. Typically motorable mid June to October, subject to weather. Two driving days from Leh with a halt at Kargil. The gentler approach with better roads and a more gradual altitude profile. From Srinagar via Zoji La and Kargil (Kashmir Side) Srinagar to Sonamarg to Zoji La to Kargil to Suru Valley to Rangdum to Pensi La to Padum. Adds a Kashmir leg to the journey. The Srinagar to Kargil highway is well-maintained and typically open from May to November. From Kargil, the route to Padum is the same as the Leh approach. This is the best option for travellers combining a Kashmir trip with Zanskar. By Air Nearest airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee in Leh. Bhuntar (Kullu) is closest to Manali but limited. Srinagar airport serves the Kashmir entry route. Delhi is the practical hub for all approaches. By Bus and Shared Cab JKSRTC buses and shared taxis run between Kargil and Padum during the open season. Zanskar Road Conditions and Best Vehicle Options Roads in Zanskar are improving year on year, but they are not Himachal highways. Expect a mix of tarmac, broken patches, gravel, and seasonal water crossings on the Manali side. Manali to Jispa. Fully paved through Atal Tunnel, comfortable for any vehicle. Jispa to Darcha to Shinku La. Paved in parts, rough patches as gradient rises. Shinku La to Purne to Padum. Most challenging. Broken road, water crossings, requires 4x4. Padum to Pensi La to Kargil. Improving steadily. Long, dusty, remote. Kargil to Srinagar via Zoji La. Well-maintained national highway. Comfortable for most vehicles. We suggest Tempo Traveller to Jispa, Force Gurkha or Bolero from Darcha onwards, and Royal Enfield Himalayan for riders. Self drive sedans beyond Darcha are not recommended. Best Time to Visit Zanskar Valley June. Early window. Pensi La typically opens mid month, Shinku La by late June, weather permitting. Low crowds but some closure risk. July to August. Peak open season. Both routes generally reliable. Best for the Phugtal trek and the best time for Zanskar Valley tour packages . September to early October. Clearest skies, golden fields, strongest photography window. Mid October onwards. Passes closing. Trips not recommended. November to May. Roads closed. Chadar Trek window: late January to mid February, weather dependent. We schedule group departures from late June to mid September. Private trips can be arranged on either side subject to road status. Best Places to Visit in Zanskar Valley
Padum
The administrative capital of Zanskar, sitting at the confluence of the Stod and Lungnak rivers. The working centre of the valley with one main market, a handful of guesthouses, the only reliable network (BSNL postpaid), and a basic hospital. Most trips base two nights here.
Phugtal Monastery
The cave monastery of Zanskar, built into a cliff above the Lungnak river around the 12th century. Reachable only on foot, about 1.5 hours each way from Purne village. Best done early to arrive before midday light flattens.
Karsha Monastery
The largest monastic complex in Zanskar, on a hillside facing Padum. Dates back about a thousand years and houses around a hundred Gelugpa monks. Time your visit to morning prayer when the horns and drums fill the assembly hall.
Stongdey Monastery
The second largest monastery in Zanskar, about 18 km north of Padum on the road to Zangla. Hilltop setting, around sixty resident monks, and one of the cleanest valley views from a single vantage point.
Sani Gompa and Sani Lake
One of the oldest religious sites in Zanskar, near the village of Sani west of Padum. The small lake next to the gompa holds a statue of Guru Rinpoche and is sacred to locals. Worth combining with a Karsha visit.
Zangla Fort
The former seat of the Zanskari king, now in ruins. The climb up takes about thirty minutes and the view back over the Padum plain is worth the effort. Pair with Stongdey for a single day loop.
Gonbo Rangjon
A standalone rock formation rising out of the valley near Kargyak, considered sacred by locals. You pass it on the Manali side route descending from Shinku La. The stargazing on a clear night is among the best in the Indian Himalayas.
Drang Drung Glacier
Viewed from the top of Pensi La on the Kargil to Padum drive. One of the largest glaciers in the wider Ladakh region, stretching for kilometres below the road. Stop the vehicle, get out, and let the scale of it land.
Sheela Waterfall
A roughly 20 metre fall about 4.5 km from Padum. A short half day add on if you have extra time in Padum and want a gentle outing without long driving.
Shinku La and Pensi La Passes
The two seasonal entry gateways into Zanskar. Shinku La at around 5,091 metres on the Manali side, Pensi La at around 4,400 metres on the Kargil side. Both are scenery you stop at, not drive through.
Best Things to Do in Zanskar Valley
Drive Shinku La
Cross the highest motorable pass on the Manali route, climbing from around 3,300 metres at Darcha to 5,091 metres in under 50 km of switchbacks. You will feel every metre of the gain.
Trek to Phugtal Monastery
The walk in from Purne is meditative. A narrow trail along the Lungnak river, then the cave monastery appears in the cliff face. Most people walk in talking and walk back in silence.
Camp Under Gonbo Rangjon
On the Manali side route, the night near the sacred mountain is one of the great stargazing experiences of the Indian Himalayas. Clear nights here are almost too dense with stars.
Stand at Pensi La and Look at Drang Drung
The Kargil to Padum drive crests at Pensi La. On a clear day, the glacier below is one of the longest visible glacier views in Ladakh. This is the first sight on the Leh or Kashmir entry route.
Attend Morning Prayer at Karsha
Be at the monastery by around 7 am to catch the monks in puja. The horns, drums, and low chanting in that hillside assembly hall are something most travellers don't expect and don't forget.
Drive the Kashmir to Zanskar Route
Start from Srinagar, cross Zoji La, drive through the Suru Valley to Rangdum and over Pensi La into Padum. The transition from lush Kashmir greens to stark Zanskari browns is one of the most dramatic landscape shifts in all of India.
Eat Dinner With a Zanskari Family
Most of our trips include at least one homestay meal in Purne or a nearby village. Buckwheat rotis, butter tea, and slow conversation around a coal stove.
Photograph Padum at Last Light
The Stod river bend with the Zanskar range behind it, around 6 to 7 pm in July, gives one of the easiest stunning compositions you will get on the trip.
Ride the Full Zanskar Loop
For riders, the Manali to Shinku La to Padum to Pensi La to Kargil to Leh to Sarchu to Manali circle is one of the most complete motorcycle trips in India. Eight passes, two weeks, one route.
