Bagore Ki Haveli

Bagore Ki Haveli is an 18th century mansion on Gangaur Ghat, right on the waterfront of Lake Pichola. During the day it works as a museum. In the evening it hosts the Dharohar folk dance show, which is the real reason most people come. If you are in Udaipur for even one evening, the dance show is worth seeing. It is one of the few places in the city where you can watch traditional Rajasthani folk performances in a genuinely atmospheric setting rather than a hotel banquet hall.

The haveli was built by Amar Chand Badwa, who served as the Prime Minister of the Mewar kingdom roughly between 1751 and 1778. After his death, the haveli passed to the Mewar royal family. It was eventually restored and converted into a museum. The building has over a hundred rooms spread across multiple levels, with exhibits of royal costumes, turbans, weapons, jewellery, paintings, and household items from the Mewar era. The Queen's Chamber has two glass and mirror peacock sculptures that are one of the more striking pieces inside.

The Dharohar Dance Show

This is the highlight. Every evening at 7 PM, the courtyard of the haveli comes alive with a one hour show of traditional Rajasthani folk dance and music. The performances typically include Ghoomar (the graceful swirling dance), Kalbeliya (the snake charmer community's dance), Bhavai (the pot balancing act), Chari (fire dance with flaming brass pots on the head), and a puppet show. The dancers perform in full traditional costume, the music is live, and the courtyard setting with old haveli walls around you makes it feel more authentic than most tourist shows.

Tickets go on sale from about 6:15 PM at the haveli counter. Seating is first come, first served. During peak season (November to February), the show fills up fast. Arrive by 6:00 to 6:15 PM to get a good seat. Front rows fill first. The show lasts about an hour. You can also book tickets through the official Dharohar website in advance if you want to be safe.

One practical note: the museum and the dance show have separate tickets. If you want to do both, you need to visit during the day for the museum (open roughly 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM) and come back in the evening for the show. Most visitors skip the museum and only come for the show, which is a reasonable choice if time is short. The museum is pleasant but not essential.

The evening plan that works

The best single evening plan in Udaipur goes like this. Sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola from Rameshwar Ghat (5:00 to 6:00 PM). Walk to Gangaur Ghat, which is about 300 metres. Grab your Dharohar show ticket by 6:15 PM. Watch the show from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Walk to one of the Lal Ghat or Ambrai rooftop restaurants for dinner. That is four hours, and it covers three of the best things in the city without any transport.
