Top Places to Visit in and Around Sissu

Raja Ghepan Temple
Raja Ghepan Temple in Sissu village is the only temple of Lord Ghepan, the presiding deity of the Lahaul valley. The building is small and modern looking, not architecturally grand, but it is the most important religious site in Lahaul for local people. Devotees climb a few steps to pay respects at a grille, where a tall wooden post wrapped in colourful fabrics represents the deity. Tourists can pay respects at the grille like the passing vehicles that slow down here. The inner sanctum is generally reserved for locals. Pair it with a Sissu day, not a dedicated trip.

Sissu Monastery (Labrang Gompa)
Sissu Monastery is the common name for Labrang Gompa, a small Buddhist monastery in Labrang village just above Sissu in the Lahaul valley, dedicated to the protector deity Palden Lhamo. It sits on slightly higher ground than Sissu, a short walk or 5 minute drive uphill, with an open view across the Chandra valley. The gompa has a fairly modern look, not ancient, with Buddha statues inside. Like most Lahaul gompas, it is often locked, and you need to find the caretaker lama for a look in. Worth a 20 to 30 minute stop in Sissu, not a day trip on its own.

Atal Tunnel
The Atal Tunnel is a 9.02 km highway tunnel on NH 3 that cuts under the Pir Panjal range between Dhundi (south portal) and Teling near Sissu (north portal), bypassing Rohtang Pass. Inaugurated in October 2020 and named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee, it is the world's longest highway single tube tunnel above 10,000 feet. It is the reason Lahaul is now accessible from Manali year round. You drive through it in 15 to 20 minutes at the posted speed. It is a public highway, not a tourist site, with no entry fee and no stopping or photography allowed inside.

Sissu Waterfall
Sissu Waterfall, locally called Palden Lhamo Dhar, is a tall cliff waterfall across the Chandra river from Sissu village, about 40 km from Manali via the Atal Tunnel. You see it from the highway, Sissu Lake, or the helipad above. It runs full in July and August and freezes into an ice column from December to February. Most travellers stop for 15 to 30 minutes. A suspension footbridge downstream also lets you cross the river and hike roughly 1 to 2 km to the base, though bridge conditions vary, so check locally.

Koksar Village
Koksar is a small Lahauli village on the Chandra river at around 3,140 metres, about 7 km east of the Atal Tunnel north portal, historically the first settlement after Rohtang Pass. Today it functions as a tea and dhaba halt, a police check post where vehicles heading to Chandratal and Spiti register, and a modest overnight option if Sissu is full. Generally described as the coldest inhabited place in Lahaul. Most travellers stop for 20 to 40 minutes, register if required, and move on.

Gondhla Fort
Gondhla Fort is a tall wood and stone tower in Gondhla village on the Manali to Leh highway, about 18 km south of Keylong and roughly 53 km from Manali via the Atal Tunnel. At around 3,160 metres, it is generally described as a seven storey Kath Kuni structure built around 1700 AD by Raja Man Singh of Kullu. Privately held by descendants of the Thakurs of Gondhla, largely unoccupied today, and in dilapidated condition. Plan a 20 to 30 minute halt on a drive between Sissu and Tandi, not a dedicated trip.

Keylong
Keylong is the district headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti and the only settlement in the valley that functions as a proper town. It sits at around 3,080 metres on the left bank of the Bhaga river, roughly 71 km and 2 to 2.5 hours from Manali via the Atal Tunnel. Most travellers stop here for one or two nights as the logistics base for Lahaul, the market, the ATMs, the hospital, and the three main monasteries of Kardang, Shashur, and Tayul. Winter visits have become practical since the tunnel opened in 2020, bringing snow travel to a town that used to be cut off for six months a year.

Tandi Sangam
Tandi Sangam is where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet in the Pattan valley of Lahaul to form the Chandrabhaga, which later becomes the Chenab once it enters Jammu. It sits at around 2,570 metres at river level, roughly 7 km south of Keylong and about two hours from Manali through the Atal Tunnel. Most travellers see it as a short highway halt from the Tandi bridge on the way to Keylong, Jispa, or Leh. The site carries real religious weight for locals, and the village pump here is still the most relied on refuelling point in Lahaul.

Sissu Lake
Sissu Lake is a small man made water body at the edge of Sissu village in Lahaul, at around 3,120 metres, reached in about 90 minutes from Manali through the Atal Tunnel. It sits near the helipad on the opposite bank of the Chandra river from the Sissu Waterfall. Most travellers spend 20 to 45 minutes here on their way into or out of Lahaul. Good for a walk, a quick boat ride in summer, photos of the frozen surface in winter, and a chai stop. Not a destination in itself.

Sissu Village
Sissu is a small Lahauli village at around 3,120 m on the Chandra river, roughly 40 km from Manali via the Atal Tunnel. It is the first proper settlement after the tunnel and the easiest entry into Lahaul, accessible year round. Most travellers come for the waterfall visible from the highway, the small lake, the helipad sunset viewpoint, and one or two nights of the valley before heading back or pushing deeper towards Keylong and Spiti.

Jispa
Jispa sits at roughly 3,200 m on the Bhaga river in Lahaul, about 20 km north of Keylong on the Manali to Leh highway. Most travellers know it as the first comfortable overnight halt after Manali on the road to Ladakh, but the riverside camping here is genuinely one of the best in Himachal, and it deserves a night on its own terms.

Ziplining Across The Chandra River
One of the most thrilling ways to reach the Sissu Waterfall base is by zipline across the Chandra River. The ride takes you soaring over rushing glacial water with mountain cliffs on both sides — a short but genuinely unforgettable adrenaline rush. Most visitors zipline one way and trek back, combining the adventure with the waterfall visit. Operators near the helipad manage the zipline with all safety gear provided.

Stargazing And Milky Way Viewing
At 3,120 metres with virtually zero light pollution, Sissu is one of the best stargazing spots in all of Himachal Pradesh. On clear nights, especially between September and November, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Several campsites arrange dedicated stargazing sessions, or you can simply step outside your stay after dinner and look up. If you are serious about astrophotography, bring a tripod and a wide-angle lens.

ATV And Snow Scooter Rides
During the winter months, the snow-covered terrain around Sissu Snow Point turns into a proper adventure playground. You can rent ATVs and snow scooters to ride across the white landscape, which is a thrilling experience for both kids and adults alike. Operators provide helmets and brief instructions before you head out. Snow tube rides on inflatable tubes down designated slopes are also available and particularly popular with families.

Village Heritage Walk
Sissu and the surrounding hamlets offer a genuine glimpse into traditional Lahauli life. Walk through narrow lanes lined with old stone-and-timber houses, pass apple orchards and cauliflower fields, and chat with locals going about their day. You will notice Buddhist prayer flags, small shrines, and the occasional sound of temple bells. The village is home to just over 2,000 people, and the pace of life here is the complete opposite of anything you have known in a city. No guide required. Just walk, observe, and let the village show itself to you.

Fishing In The Chandra River
The Chandra River, flowing right past Sissu, offers catch-and-release trout fishing during the summer months. The river's cold glacial waters are home to both brown and rainbow trout. You will need a fishing permit from the local authorities, available at Keylong, and it is best to carry your own basic gear or rent it from Manali. The quiet riverbanks, with mountain views in every direction, make the whole experience as much about relaxation as it is about the catch.

Monastery And Gompa Circuit
The Lahaul Valley around Sissu is dotted with ancient Buddhist monasteries, each with its own history, architecture, and mountain views. Start with Gyephang Temple in Sissu itself, then extend your trip to Kardang Monastery near Keylong, the centuries-old Guru Ghantal Monastery (one of the oldest in Lahaul), and Tayul Gompa, known for its sacred statue. A full monastery circuit takes a day and gives you a deep sense of the spiritual fabric of this region.
