Top Places to Visit in and Around Sissu

Sissu Waterfall
A secret waterfall that transforms into a winter wonderland. Located in the middle of cliffs and pine trees, this frozen waterfall is a short stroll from the village center. In summer, it is a peaceful spot for get-togethers. Best for: Photography, quiet moments, playing in the snow.

Atal Tunnel Drive
Driving through feels like entering a different world. The longest highway tunnel in Asia, Atal Tunnel, drives through the unrivaled capture of green-laden Manali to the dry, arid, pristine Lahaul in just under 10 minutes. Best for: Bikers, road-trippers, and scenic transitions.

Sissu Lake
A serene lake set with willows and mountains, Sissu sometimes goes cold and tucks itself under a frozen blanket, exposing its photogenic features. In summer, it is a place for silence. Best for: Making reels, quiet strolls, and lovebirds.

Gyephang Temple
As a place of local worship, Gyephang serves Lahaul as an ancient shrine bearing roots of stunning stone and wood craftsmanship, making it a steep escape bursting with culture. Best for: Culture and spiritual seekers.

Café Stops with a View
Cuisines available in paws like wood-fired pizza joints and riverside chai cafés make Sissu’s small eateries quite special. No sunset coffee should be missed beside the Himalayas. Best for: Food enthusiasts, digital nomads, and creators.

Ghepan Lake
One of the most rewarding treks from Sissu, the Ghepan Lake trail covers roughly 34 km through Labrang and Retil villages, passing through alpine meadows and glacial terrain before reaching the lake at 4,146 metres. The trek takes approximately 12 hours and is rated moderately difficult, making it ideal for experienced trekkers looking for a proper multi-day adventure. The lake sits in a bowl surrounded by snow peaks, and very few tourists ever make it here. That, honestly, is a big part of the appeal. Best for: Trekking enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking solitude at altitude.

Gondhla Fort
About 14 km west of Sissu, Gondhla Fort is an eight-storey stone-and-timber tower originally built by the Rajas of Kullu. Standing on the banks of the Chandra River, it is one of the few surviving examples of traditional Lahauli architecture still standing in the valley. Visitors cannot enter the structure itself, but the exterior and the panoramic views of the river gorge from the site make it a worthwhile stop on any Sissu day trip. Best for: History lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and scenic photography.

Keylong Town
The administrative headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district, Keylong sits 30 km from Sissu and makes for an excellent half-day or full-day trip. The town is known for its monasteries, especially Kardang Monastery, and its market where you can pick up handwoven Pashmina shawls, woolen caps, ceramic items, and local jewellery. Several restaurants serve Tibetan and North Indian food. You can reach Keylong by private cab, shared taxi, or HRTC bus from Sissu. Best for: Shopping, monastery visits, and local food exploration.

Tandi — Where Two Rivers Become One
Around 40 km from Sissu, Tandi is where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers merge to form the Chandrabhaga, also known as the Chenab. The confluence point sits in a dramatic valley framed by barren brown hills and a wide open sky, and it looks nothing like the rest of Himachal. It is one of the most photographed spots on the Leh-Manali Highway and absolutely worth the detour if you are heading towards Keylong or Udaipur. Best for: Photography, scenic drives, and geography enthusiasts.

Jispa Village
A serene riverside village roughly 50 km from Sissu on the road to Leh, Jispa is where the valley opens up into wide meadows with the Bhaga River running right through the middle of it. It is a popular overnight stop for bikers and travellers heading to Ladakh, with a handful of riverside campsites and guesthouses to choose from. In summer, the green meadows contrast sharply with the snow-capped peaks rising behind them. In winter, the village is blanketed in white and feels truly remote in the best possible way. Best for: Riverside camping, bikers, couples seeking quiet, and Ladakh-route travellers.

Sissu Helipad Viewpoint
Located at a gentle elevation above the village, the Sissu Helipad offers one of the best panoramic views in the entire area. From here you can see the Chandra River winding through the valley, snow-capped peaks stretching in every direction, and the Sissu Waterfall cascading in the distance. It is an easy walk or a short drive from the village centre, and it is especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the mountains at a low angle. Best for: Sunrise and sunset views, family-friendly outings, and drone photography.

Kardang Monastery
Perched on a hillside above Keylong, Kardang Monastery is one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the Lahaul Valley. The three-storey structure houses ancient scriptures, thangka paintings, and prayer wheels, and offers stunning views of the valley below. The monastery is the seat of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage in Lahaul and hosts colourful prayer flag ceremonies throughout the year. A visit here pairs beautifully with a day trip to Keylong. Best for: Spiritual seekers, culture enthusiasts, and photographers.

Soft Treks And Snow Play
Ideal for first-time explorers to embark on an adventure. You can go sledding, build a snowman, or simply lie down and gaze up at the sky. If you want to be a little more active, there are a few easy beginner treks that lead to nearby scenic overlooks.

Ziplining Across The Chandra River
One of the most thrilling ways to reach the Sissu Waterfall base is by zipline across the Chandra River. The ride takes you soaring over rushing glacial water with mountain cliffs on both sides — a short but genuinely unforgettable adrenaline rush. Most visitors zipline one way and trek back, combining the adventure with the waterfall visit. Operators near the helipad manage the zipline with all safety gear provided.

Stargazing And Milky Way Viewing
At 3,120 metres with virtually zero light pollution, Sissu is one of the best stargazing spots in all of Himachal Pradesh. On clear nights, especially between September and November, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Several campsites arrange dedicated stargazing sessions, or you can simply step outside your stay after dinner and look up. If you are serious about astrophotography, bring a tripod and a wide-angle lens.

ATV And Snow Scooter Rides
During the winter months, the snow-covered terrain around Sissu Snow Point turns into a proper adventure playground. You can rent ATVs and snow scooters to ride across the white landscape, which is a thrilling experience for both kids and adults alike. Operators provide helmets and brief instructions before you head out. Snow tube rides on inflatable tubes down designated slopes are also available and particularly popular with families.

Village Heritage Walk
Sissu and the surrounding hamlets offer a genuine glimpse into traditional Lahauli life. Walk through narrow lanes lined with old stone-and-timber houses, pass apple orchards and cauliflower fields, and chat with locals going about their day. You will notice Buddhist prayer flags, small shrines, and the occasional sound of temple bells. The village is home to just over 2,000 people, and the pace of life here is the complete opposite of anything you have known in a city. No guide required. Just walk, observe, and let the village show itself to you.

Fishing In The Chandra River
The Chandra River, flowing right past Sissu, offers catch-and-release trout fishing during the summer months. The river's cold glacial waters are home to both brown and rainbow trout. You will need a fishing permit from the local authorities, available at Keylong, and it is best to carry your own basic gear or rent it from Manali. The quiet riverbanks, with mountain views in every direction, make the whole experience as much about relaxation as it is about the catch.

Monastery And Gompa Circuit
The Lahaul Valley around Sissu is dotted with ancient Buddhist monasteries, each with its own history, architecture, and mountain views. Start with Gyephang Temple in Sissu itself, then extend your trip to Kardang Monastery near Keylong, the centuries-old Guru Ghantal Monastery (one of the oldest in Lahaul), and Tayul Gompa, known for its sacred statue. A full monastery circuit takes a day and gives you a deep sense of the spiritual fabric of this region.
