From Kolkata, Chandratal is not a weekend trip. It is not even a long weekend trip. It is a proper Himalayan journey, and the sooner you embrace that, the better the trip gets. The lake sits at 4,300 metres in the mountains between Lahaul and Spiti, accessible only during summer. From Kolkata, reaching it involves a flight to Delhi or Chandigarh, a road transfer into Himachal, and days of mountain driving through terrain that changes so dramatically it feels like a different country. For most Kolkata travellers, the smartest way to experience Chandratal is as part of a fuller Spiti Valley circuit. You enter through Kinnaur, travel through the cold desert, spend time among monasteries and high villages, and arrive at the lake near the end of the journey. It takes 8 to 10 days, and every one of those days earns its place. Travel Coffee handles the entire chain. Flights, transfers, mountain stays, camps, and the route itself. You focus on the experience. We handle the logistics. At a Glance Starting Point: Kolkata (flight to Delhi or Chandigarh, then road into Himachal) Best Trip Format: Full Spiti circuit with Chandratal as the finale. Shimla entry, Manali exit. Secondary Trip Format : Compact Chandratal camping trip via Manali, only when time is tight. Ideal Duration : 8 to 10 days for the circuit. 7 days minimum for the compact route. Best Season : Late June to early October. Peak conditions in July, August, and September. Ideal For : Couples, groups of friends, solo travellers, photography enthusiasts, and families with older children. Joining Options: Fly from Kolkata to Delhi or Chandigarh. Chandigarh is closer to both Manali and Shimla, saving significant road time. Delhi offers more flight options and sometimes lower fares. Why People Choose This Route : Kolkata travellers who want Chandratal usually want more than just the lake. The Spiti circuit gives them a complete journey through Kinnaur, the cold desert, ancient monasteries, and high villages, with Chandratal as the natural climax. Featured Chandratal Package Types from Kolkata 8 Days, 7 Nights: Compact Spiti with Chandratal from Kolkata The tightest version of the full circuit. You fly to Chandigarh, enter Spiti through Kinnaur, spend time in Kaza, cross Kunzum Pass, camp at Chandratal, and exit via Manali before flying home. This works for travellers who move well, adapt quickly, and want the arc of the full circuit without taking two weeks off. The pace is steady with limited rest days. 9 Days, 8 Nights: Best Selling Kolkata to Spiti Circuit with Chandratal The format we recommend most. You get proper time in Kinnaur, a comfortable Kaza stay with a day for high village exploration, a Chandratal camping night, and a relaxed Manali exit. This is where the trip stops feeling rushed and starts feeling like a journey. You arrive at each stop with time to settle in and look around. 10 Days, 9 Nights: Premium Chandratal and Spiti Journey from Kolkata For travellers who want depth. Extra nights in Kinnaur. A rest day in Kaza. Pin Valley or additional villages. Chandratal without any time pressure. Best for families, older travellers, photographers, and anyone who came all the way from Kolkata and wants to experience Spiti properly, not just pass through it. Private Custom Chandratal Trip from Kolkata If none of the fixed formats fit, we build a custom itinerary for your group. Your dates, your pace, your interests. We handle the flights, the vehicle, the stays, and the route decisions. Whether you are a couple looking for a private journey or a family of eight planning a summer trip, the itinerary is shaped around you. Why Chandratal from Kolkata Is Best Experienced as a Real Himalayan Journey There is a version of this trip where you fly to Delhi, rush to Manali, sprint to Chandratal, camp one night, and fly back. It works. But from Kolkata, it feels like going a very long way for a very short experience. The better version starts the same way. You fly out of Kolkata. But instead of racing to the lake, you enter the mountains slowly through Kinnaur, watching the landscape shift from green valleys to cold desert over the course of a week. You visit monasteries that are older than most things you have seen. You walk through villages at 4,000 metres where fossils lie scattered on the ground. You sit in Kaza with a cup of tea and look at mountains that feel impossibly close. And then, after days of this, you cross Kunzum Pass and walk to Chandratal. The lake does not feel like a tourist stop. It feels like a destination you earned. That is the trip worth flying across the country for. Why Kolkata Travellers Need a Different Plan The East India Access Layer Kolkata is roughly 1,500 to 1,800 km from the Himalayan foothills. There is no direct road route that makes sense. You need a flight to Delhi or Chandigarh before the mountain section even begins. That flight adds half a day, sometimes a full day with connections and transfers. Fatigue Before the Mountains By the time you land in Delhi or Chandigarh and drive to your first mountain halt, you have already been travelling for 8 to 12 hours. Starting the rough mountain drive to Chandratal the next morning, on top of that fatigue, is where short trips from Kolkata start going wrong. Why Rushing Feels Harder from Kolkata A 4 to 5 day Chandratal trip from Delhi or Chandigarh is practical because those cities are close to Manali. From Kolkata, you need to add at least 1 to 2 days for the flight and transfer layer. A trip that feels tight from Delhi feels genuinely exhausting from Kolkata. The Smarter Approach Instead of compressing, expand. Use the extra travel days to enter Spiti gradually through Kinnaur. Your altitude adjusts naturally. Your body recovers from the flight. And by the time you reach Chandratal, you are acclimatised, rested, and ready. Best Routes from Kolkata to Chandratal Option 1: Kolkata to Delhi, Then Manali, Then Chandratal Fly to Delhi (about 2 to 2.5 hours). Drive or bus to Manali (12 to 14 hours). Drive to Chandratal the next day. This is the compact route. It gets you to the lake in the least number of days. The tradeoff is heavy transit, rapid altitude gain, and limited time for anything beyond the lake itself. Option 2: Kolkata to Chandigarh, Then Manali, Then Chandratal Fly to Chandigarh (about 2.5 hours, often with a connection). Drive to Manali (7 to 8 hours). Continue to Chandratal. Better than Delhi for shorter trips because it saves road time. A good option when Chandigarh flights are available and affordable. Option 3: Kolkata to Delhi or Chandigarh, Then Full Spiti Circuit with Chandratal This is the route we recommend for most Kolkata travellers. Fly to Chandigarh (or Delhi). Drive to Shimla or Narkanda. Enter Spiti through Kinnaur. Travel through Sangla, Kalpa, Nako, Tabo, and Kaza. Explore the high villages. Cross Kunzum Pass. Camp at Chandratal. Exit via Manali. Fly home. The full circuit uses your travel days wisely. You spend 6 to 8 days in the mountains instead of 3, and the experience is incomparably richer. Which Chandratal Package from Kolkata Is Right for You Compact Trip (8 Days) For travellers with limited leave who still want the Spiti arc. You move steadily through the circuit without rest days. Every stop is brief but purposeful. Balanced Circuit (9 Days) The version we recommend most. You have time for Kinnaur, a proper Kaza day, the high villages, and a comfortable Chandratal night. Nothing feels rushed. Premium Circuit (10 Days) For travellers who want depth. Extra time in Kinnaur or Kaza. A rest day when your body needs it. Chandratal without time pressure. Best for families, photographers, and first timers. Private Custom Trip For couples or families who want the itinerary shaped around their pace, interests, and comfort level. We handle everything from flights to camps. Why Travel Coffee for Your Kolkata to Chandratal Trip Flight and Transfer Support : We help align your Kolkata departure with the mountain itinerary. Morning arrivals, evening flights, and buffer nights are all factored in. Buffer Night Planning: If your flight arrives late or you want rest before the road journey, we arrange a clean halt near the airport or in the city. Route Advice Based on Real Fatigue: We do not copy Delhi timelines for Kolkata travellers. We add buffer where it matters and pace the itinerary around how you will actually feel after a cross country flight. Better Acclimatisation Logic: The Shimla entry route climbs gradually through Kinnaur, which is ideal for East India travellers adjusting from low elevation and humid heat. Local Support : Once you enter Himachal, our ground team manages everything. Experienced drivers, vetted stays, and communication when conditions change. Honest Package Matching : If a compact trip does not suit your fitness or comfort level, we will say so. We would rather plan the right trip than sell the wrong one. Kolkata to Spiti to Chandratal: The Route Explained Simply Kolkata to Delhi or Chandigarh : 2 to 2.5 hour flight. Chandigarh to Shimla or Narkanda: 3 to 5 hours by road. Some itineraries skip Shimla and push directly to Narkanda or Sarahan. Kinnaur : Through Sangla, Chitkul (optional), and Kalpa. Green valleys, apple orchards, river gorges. The landscape shifts gradually from lush to dry. Into Spiti : Through Nako, Tabo, and Kaza. The terrain becomes cold desert. Monasteries appear on hilltops. The sky opens up. Kaza and High Villages: Key Monastery, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komic. A full day of exploration at 4,000 to 4,500 metres. Kaza to Chandratal : Via Losar and Kunzum Pass. The crossing takes you from Spiti into Lahaul. Chandratal is the final stop before the descent. Chandratal to Manali : Through Batal, Gramphu, and the Atal Tunnel into the Kullu Valley. Manali to Chandigarh to Kolkata: Road to Chandigarh, then flight home. Can You Do a Shorter Chandratal Trip from Kolkata? Yes, but we want to be honest about what that looks like. A 7 day trip from Kolkata involves flying to Chandigarh, driving to Manali, reaching Chandratal in a day or two, camping one night, returning to Manali, and flying home. About two to three of those seven days are pure transit. It works for travellers who are fit, travel often, and specifically want the lake without the Spiti context. If that describes you, we will plan it well. But for most Kolkata travellers, we recommend the Spiti circuit. You have already committed to a cross country flight. The extra 2 to 3 days turn a rushed lake visit into a complete Himalayan journey. The return on those extra days is enormous. Best Itinerary Options from Kolkata 7 Days, 6 Nights (Manali Route Only) Day 1: Fly to Chandigarh. Drive toward Manali. Day 2: Manali. Rest and acclimatise. Day 3: Manali to Chandratal via Atal Tunnel and Batal. Campsite by afternoon. Day 4: Sunrise at the lake. Return to Manali. Day 5: Manali exploration or drive to Chandigarh. Day 6: Buffer or transfer day. Day 7: Fly home. Compact. Transit heavy. Best only when time is genuinely limited. 8 Days, 7 Nights (Compact Spiti Circuit) Covers the full Shimla to Manali arc. Kinnaur, Kaza, Chandratal. No rest days. Purposeful pace. 9 Days, 8 Nights (Recommended) The balanced version. Proper time at each stop. A full Kaza exploration day. A comfortable Chandratal night. No rushing. 10 Days, 9 Nights (Premium) Extra nights in Kinnaur or Kaza. A rest day. Chandratal without pressure. The version where the trip feels spacious. 11 Days, 10 Nights (Extended) Pin Valley, additional villages, a night in Manali before flying home. The most complete experience. Flights, Trains, and Transfer Support from Kolkata Flights to Delhi Multiple daily flights. About 2 to 2.5 hours. Widest choice of airlines and times. From Delhi, you continue by road to Manali (12 to 14 hours) or Shimla (8 to 10 hours). Flights to Chandigarh Direct or one stop flights. About 2.5 hours. Chandigarh saves significant road time. Manali is 7 to 8 hours away. Shimla is 3 to 4 hours. Train Plus Road For budget travellers, trains from Howrah or Sealdah to Delhi or Chandigarh connect with road transfers into the mountains. This adds a day but saves flight costs. Best for travellers with flexible schedules. What Travel Coffee Coordinates We align your Kolkata departure with the mountain itinerary. Airport pickup at your joining city. Buffer night if your flight arrives late. Vehicle and driver ready for the morning. The entire chain is planned so you do not have to piece it together yourself. Best Time to Visit Chandratal from Kolkata June to Early July The road opens. Conditions can be unpredictable. Some camps may still be setting up. Best for experienced, flexible travellers. July and August The classic window. Roads are at their most accessible. Camps at Chandratal are fully running. Rain is possible in August. Best for most Kolkata travellers. September The finest month for many experienced travellers. Clear skies. Golden light. Vivid lake colours. Camps wind down toward late September. Plan for early to mid month. Early October End of season. Camps may be closed. Early snowfall possible. Only for prepared travellers with flexible dates. Winter The road is closed from November through May. What If Chandratal Is Not Open If Kunzum Pass or the Chandratal road is not accessible during your dates, the Spiti circuit from Kolkata remains a deeply rewarding trip. Kinnaur, Kaza, the monasteries, and the high villages carry the journey on their own. The route may exit via the same Shimla side or adjust based on conditions. What we will not do is push you toward a risky road to include the lake. We check conditions before your trip. If Chandratal is unlikely to be open, you will know before you book flights. Stay and Camping Options on the Route Kinnaur (Sangla, Kalpa, Nako) Hotels and guesthouses with proper rooms, hot water, and home cooked meals. These are the most comfortable stays on the circuit. Kaza Proper hotels, restaurants, and cafes. Budget to mid range options. Two nights here give you time to rest and explore. Chandratal Camping in a designated zone about 2 km from the lake. Dome or alpine tents with mattresses and sleeping bags. Meals cooked at the campsite. Toilets are basic and shared. You do not camp on the shore. Nights are cold. Temperatures drop to 2 to 5 degrees Celsius even in summer. Come prepared. Manali Your exit night. A proper hotel room with hot water after a week of basic stays and cold camps. Vehicle, Network, and Practical Travel Information Vehicle A high clearance SUV is essential for the mountain sections, especially the Batal to Chandratal stretch. Highway sections work with any vehicle. We match the vehicle to your group size and route. Network Your phone works in Kolkata, at the airport, and along the highway. After entering the mountains, signal becomes patchy. Chandratal has no network. Kaza has limited connectivity. Download offline maps before departure. Cash and ATMs Withdraw cash before you leave Kolkata or at the airport. The next reliable ATM after your joining city is in Kaza, and even that can be out of service. Camps and dhabas do not accept digital payments. Packing You are travelling from one of the warmest, most humid cities in India to one of the coldest, driest places in the Himalayas. Pack thermals, fleece, windproof jacket, warm cap, gloves, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, a headlamp, a rain jacket, and a personal medical kit. Leave the light cotton behind. Every warm layer you carry will be used. Hydration and Medicine Drink water constantly above 3,500 metres. The dry mountain air dehydrates faster than Kolkata's humidity. Carry your own prescription medicines, first aid kit, and altitude sickness tablets if your doctor recommends them. Early Starts Mountain driving days work best when you leave early. Morning roads are quieter and the light is better. Most of our itineraries have early departures, especially on driving days. Start Planning Your Kolkata to Chandratal Spiti Circuit with Travel Coffee You are coming from the other side of the country. The flight alone takes you 1,500 km before the mountain journey begins. That is not a reason to rush. It is a reason to plan properly. The right joining city. The right number of days. The right pace through altitude and cold. The right stays and camps. Get those pieces right and the trip delivers something a weekend getaway never could. We plan Kolkata origin trips with the full picture in mind. Your flight, your first mountain night, your acclimatisation curve, and the road conditions during your travel window. Everything connects. Send us a message on WhatsApp with your travel dates, group size, and how many days you can spare. We will help you build a Chandratal trip that works from Dum Dum to the lake shore and back. Travel Coffee. Real mountain trips, made with care.
At 4,300 metres, Chandratal sits in a natural amphitheatre of barren ridges. The lake is roughly one kilometre around, crescent-shaped, and changes colour through the day. Mornings are usually still, with near-perfect reflections. The walk from camp is short but memorable, the lake appearing suddenly as you crest the final rise.
Kunzum Pass
At roughly 4,590 metres, Kunzum La connects Lahaul to Spiti. A small temple marks the top. The pass offers wide views of snow-covered ranges and valley systems on either side. Crossing Kunzum is a defining moment in any Chandratal itinerary.
Batal
Not a village so much as a collection of roadside shelters where travellers stop for tea. It sits at the junction between the Chandratal turnoff and the Kunzum route. The landscape is raw and glacial. Batal gives you a real sense of how remote this territory is.
Sissu
A green, relatively mild village in Lahaul Valley. Waterfalls, riverside views, and clean guesthouses make it a welcome rest point and a good acclimatization stop before pushing higher.
Losar
The first village on the Spiti side after crossing Kunzum. The valley opens up, the terrain shifts from grey rock to sandy brown, and the distinct character of Spiti begins. For combined Chandratal and Spiti trips, Losar is the gateway.
Kaza
The administrative centre of Spiti Valley, offering fuel, ATMs, basic medical support, and guesthouses. Also a base for visiting Key Monastery, Pin Valley, and Hikkim. Kaza adds cultural depth to the journey.
Key Monastery
Perched on a hilltop above the Spiti River, Key is the largest monastery in Spiti. The layered white and ochre structure against bare mountains is unforgettable. A visit brings spiritual and cultural texture to a Chandratal road trip.
Atal Tunnel
This 9.02-kilometre tunnel below Rohtang connects Manali to Lahaul year-round, saving hours of driving. For Chandratal-bound travellers, this is where the mountain journey truly begins.
Jispa
A small settlement along the Bhaga River in Lahaul. Jispa works well as an overnight stop, with simple and pleasant riverside camps.
Best Things to Do on a Chandratal Tour
Camp Under Open Sky
A night at over 4,200 metres with nothing between you and a canopy of stars is the highlight of most trips.
Watch Sunrise at the Lake
Reaching before dawn, when the water is perfectly still, gives you a view that few places on earth can match. The colour shifts as sunlight touches the ridges are slow and extraordinary.
Cross Kunzum Pass
Whether by car or bike, Kunzum is one of the most exhilarating stretches in Himalayan travel. The unpaved road, the altitude, and the vast emptiness make it genuinely thrilling.
Photograph the Night Sky
With zero light pollution and thin atmosphere, Chandratal is one of the finest astrophotography locations in India. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on clear nights.
Combine with a Full Spiti Road Trip
Adding Chandratal to a Spiti circuit creates one of the most complete high altitude road trips in India.

I, being a senior citizen travelled solo with Travel Coffee for Spiti Valley and Chandratal Lake for 8N/9D. It was an amazing trip, well organised with decent hotels. Vanshika from Travel Coffee supported me, took great care of me till the very end. I enjoyed a lot and am looking forward to join any upcoming trips in future
My first trip to Himachal was awesome! Thank you Travel Coffee, our captain Anil Sharma, and our driver Beenu sharma for making this trip memorable. My dream of seeing the Milky Way Galaxy and snow-covered Chandratal came true because of you. The team was amazing, and all the fellow travelers were very friendly. Thank you so much for the wonderful memories! ❤️🏔️🌌
I recently completed the Spiti Valley - Chandratal Lake Tour, ending in Manali, organized by Travel Coffee. Overall, it was a memorable and enjoyable experience. The accommodations throughout the trip were comfortable, the food arrangements were good, and the bikes provided were well-maintained and reliable for the challenging terrain. The route itself was breathtaking, and the overall trip execution was satisfactory. There was some minor mismanagement on Day 1, primarily related to the coordination by the tour guide, which caused a bit of confusion at the start of the journey. Even when we were heading to Chandratal the backup can was never with us we completed the toughest terrain by ourselves. However, the team managed things better as the trip progressed. One area where there is definitely scope for improvement is the daily rider briefing and overall coordination among participants. A short briefing each morning covering the day's route, terrain conditions, expected riding challenges, fuel stops, road conditions, and possible traffic bottlenecks would greatly enhance the riding experience and help riders prepare better. That said, these were relatively minor issues in an otherwise well-organized adventure. The stunning landscapes, good arrangements, and overall experience made the trip worthwhile. Thank you to the Travel Coffee team for helping create some wonderful memories in Spiti Valley.
We had booked a customised Kinnaur and Spiti trip with Travel Coffee and the experience was wonderful from start to finish. Preeti helped us plan the itinerary in a very practical way, covering Narkanda, Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, Kaza and Chandratal without making the journey too hectic. She explained the route clearly before the trip and was always available during the journey. The hotels selected for us were comfortable and had beautiful views, especially in Kalpa and Kaza. Our driver was polite, punctual and very confident on the difficult mountain roads. Overall, it was a beautifully managed Himalayan trip. We came back with lifetime memories and would definitely recommend Travel Coffee for Spiti and Kinnaur.
We completed our Spiti Valley bike trip with Travel Coffee and it was an unforgettable adventure. Ishita coordinated everything very well before the trip and helped us understand the route, riding conditions, packing list and safety points. The journey was challenging, but the planning was strong. The support team was helpful, the bikes were in good condition, and the route through Kinnaur, Kaza and Chandratal was absolutely stunning. Every day had a different kind of landscape. Spiti on a bike is not easy, but with the right team it becomes a lifetime memory. Thank you Travel Coffee for making it happen
