Itinerary

Your trip starts in the evening from Delhi. Get on the overnight Volvo and meet your fellow travellers, as the group starts forming here. Settle in and rest well. Tomorrow is a relaxed day in Manali, not a long drive, so you slow down before the real adventure begins.

  • The Dhankar Lake trek, Pin Valley, Mud Village, Gue Monastery, and the Tabo caves, which are not part of this itinerary

Best Season
Mid June to mid September, subject to Kunzum Pass, the Chandratal road, and campsite access
Ideal For
Solo travellers, friend groups, couples, and photographers who want a fuller, calmer Spiti trip with time to settle in
Know Before You Go
This is a shared group departure. You travel with fellow travellers, usually 10 to 18 people, and a trip captain. The vehicle is a Tempo Traveller or a Shared SUV / MUV, based on the final group size
The overnight Volvo takes about 12 to 14 hours. Carry a neck pillow, light blanket, water, and snacks for the bus
Day 3 is a long day, about 8 to 10 hours from Manali to Kaza on rough mountain roads. Rest well the night before, carry snacks, and stay hydrated
Kaza is high up at about 3800 metres. The three nights in Kaza give your body time to adjust. Take it easy on the first evening, eat light, and drink plenty of water
This trip covers Tabo Monastery and Dhankar Monastery on the Day 5 trip. It does not include Pin Valley, Mud Village, Gue Monastery, Dhankar Lake, or the Tabo caves. This keeps each day practical and not rushed
On Day 5 you stay at the same Kaza hotel, so you do not change rooms or carry your luggage for a one night stay
You camp only at the marked camping zone near Chandratal. You walk about 1.5 km each way over a rocky, uneven trail to see the lake. There is no camping right at the lake because it is protected
The Chandratal camp is basic because it is remote. Expect double or quad sharing tents, a mess tent, and shared or common toilets. Bring a sleeping bag liner if you feel the cold
The Chandratal camp is small and runs only in season. If it is full, or if the group wants more comfort like senior citizen or family groups, the night is in a hotel or guesthouse in Losar, the last village before Kunzum Pass, as the second best choice. This is told to you in advance, and you still visit Chandratal Lake either way
A dedicated trip captain travels with the bigger Social and Full batches, which are groups above 10 people. Smaller batches have a trip coordinator and the local driver
Rooms are on double or triple sharing. A single room may cost extra and depends on availability. A single tent near Chandratal is subject to campsite availability
Early hotel check in in Manali depends on a room being free. Manali sightseeing depends on the Volvo arrival time and daylight
Phone network is weak in Kaza, where BSNL works best, and gone at Chandratal. Carry enough cash, about Rs 5,000 to 7,000, as ATMs and online payments are not reliable
Even in summer, Kaza nights are cold and Chandratal can drop close to freezing. Carry thermals, a warm jacket, a woollen cap, and gloves
Wear sturdy shoes for the 1.5 km Chandratal walk, monastery steps, and village paths
Times in the plan are rough guesses. The order and length of stops may change with the road, weather, and traffic. The trip captain may change the plan for safety
If you are coming from outside Delhi, reach Delhi by evening on Day 1 to board the Volvo

Frequently Asked Questions

Three nights in Kaza make the trip calmer and safer. You get time to adjust to the altitude, do the full village circuit on one day, and the Tabo and Dhankar heritage day on another, all from the same base, without packing and moving hotels each day.

She is an amazing person and went above and beyond to help us create the perfect booking. The entire service was seamless and highly effective, and the hotels she selected for us were absolutely amazing with great comfort and views. Driving through those massive mountain terrains can be daunting, but their flawless coordination made the entire journey stress-free. If you're planning a trip to Leh, Ladakh, Spiti, or any of these mountain regions, Travel Coffee is the way to go!
