Chandratal is not close to Delhi. It is not a weekend trip. But it is one of the most rewarding mountain journeys you can take from the capital, if you plan it right. From Delhi, there are two smart ways to reach Chandratal. The first is a short, focused trip through Manali. You take an overnight bus or a flight, drive through the Atal Tunnel, cross the rough road beyond Batal, and camp at 4,300 metres. You can do this in 4 to 5 days if you are willing to move fast. The second is a longer Spiti circuit. You travel through Shimla, Kinnaur, and the cold desert of Spiti, spending a week immersed in monasteries, high villages, and wide open landscape before arriving at Chandratal near the end. This takes 8 to 10 days and feels like a completely different kind of trip. This page will help you decide which one fits your time, your body, and the kind of experience you actually want.At a GlanceStarting Point: Delhi (overnight bus, flight to Kullu, or road transfer)Best Trip Styles: Short Chandratal getaway via Manali, or full Spiti circuit with Chandratal included via Shimla entry and Manali exit.Ideal Duration: 4 to 5 days for the short route. 8 to 10 days for the full circuit. Anything under 4 days is not realistic.Best Season: Late June to early October. Peak conditions in July, August, and September.Ideal For: Couples, groups of friends, solo travellers, photography enthusiasts, and families with older children.Route Logic: Via Manali for speed and simplicity. Via Shimla for depth, better acclimatisation, and a richer overall journey. Why People Choose This Page: Delhi travellers need to factor in overnight travel time, altitude readiness, and the tradeoff between a quick lake trip and a more complete Himalayan experience. This page helps with that decision.Featured Chandratal Package Types from Delhi4 Days, 3 Nights: Delhi to Chandratal Quick GetawayFor travellers with very limited time. You take an overnight bus or flight to Manali, drive to Chandratal the same day or the next morning, camp one night, and return to Manali before heading back to Delhi. This is a fast trip.It works for fit, experienced travellers who are comfortable with long hours on mountain roads and rapid altitude gain. Not ideal if you want a relaxed pace.5 Days, 4 Nights: Delhi to Manali Chandratal Camping TripThe most popular short format. You arrive in Manali, rest for half a day, drive to Chandratal with a possible halt in Sissu or Chatru, camp overnight, and return to Manali the next day with time to breathe before heading back to Delhi. This extra day makes a significant difference. You arrive at the lake less fatigued and have time to actually enjoy the campsite instead of rushing through it.8 Days, 7 Nights: Delhi to Chandratal Spiti Compact CircuitFor travellers who want Chandratal as part of a bigger journey. You travel from Delhi to Shimla or Chandigarh, enter Spiti through Kinnaur, spend time in Kaza and the high villages, cross Kunzum Pass to Chandratal, and exit via Manali back to Delhi.A compact but complete circuit. Good for travellers who have about a week and want culture, landscape, and the lake in one trip.9 Days, 8 Nights: Best Selling Delhi to Spiti Circuit with ChandratalThe full experience. Proper time in Kinnaur. Two nights in Kaza. A full day exploring monasteries and high villages. A comfortable Chandratal camping night. A relaxed Manali exit and return to Delhi. This is the version where nothing feels rushed. You acclimatise gradually, and Chandratal arrives as the emotional high point of a longer journey rather than a stressed destination. Two Ways to Reach Chandratal from DelhiMost Delhi travellers picture a straight line from the city to the lake. The reality is more interesting than that.Chandratal sits at 4,300 metres in the mountains between Lahaul and Spiti, accessible only during summer and early autumn. From Delhi, you cannot just drive there directly. You first need to reach either Manali or the Spiti Valley, and then take the rough mountain road to the lake. This gives you a choice. A shorter, more intense trip through Manali. Or a longer, more layered journey through the Spiti circuit. Both end at the same lake, but they feel completely different. The short route is about the destination. The longer route is about the journey. Which one suits you depends on how much time you have and what kind of travel moves you.Why Delhi Travellers Need Smarter PlanningChandratal is not a hill station you can reach with a casual weekend drive. From Delhi, you are looking at a minimum of 12 to 14 hours just to reach Manali, before the actual mountain journey even begins. That means by the time you start driving toward Chandratal, you have already spent a night on a bus or a morning on a flight. You are tired before the trip has truly started. And the road from Manali to Chandratal, especially the stretch beyond Batal, demands alertness and physical resilience. This is why planning matters more for Delhi travellers than for someone already in Manali. If you have 4 days, you need a tight, well timed itinerary with no wasted hours. If you have 5, you gain breathing room that changes the trip entirely. And if you have 8 or more, the Spiti circuit removes the fatigue problem almost completely because you spread the altitude gain across a full week. The worst version of this trip is the one where you try to squeeze too much into too few days and arrive at Chandratal exhausted.Route Option 1: Delhi to Chandratal via ManaliThis is the direct route. It gets you to the lake in the shortest possible time.Delhi to Manali: Overnight Volvo bus (12 to 14 hours) or flight to Kullu airport plus a 1 to 2 hour road transfer to Manali.Manali to Atal Tunnel: About 25 km of smooth highway. The tunnel takes you straight into Lahaul, skipping the old Rohtang climb entirely.Atal Tunnel to Gramphu: About 20 km through the Lahaul Valley. The landscape shifts from green forest to dry, open terrain.Gramphu to Batal: About 30 km of rough mountain track. Broken surfaces, water crossings, slow driving. This stretch takes 2 to 3 hours depending on conditions.Batal to Chandratal Campsite: About 14 km of narrow, steep road. Rough but short. You reach the campsite zone first. The lake is a 2 km walk from there.Return: Same route back to Manali, then overnight bus or flight to Delhi. This route works well for 4 to 5 day trips. It is direct, logistically simple, and gets you to the lake with minimum stops. The tradeoff is speed over comfort.Route Option 2: Delhi to Chandratal via Spiti CircuitThis is the longer route. It takes you through an entirely different landscape before reaching the lake.Delhi to Shimla or Chandigarh: Overnight bus, train, or flight. Some travellers drive.Shimla to Kinnaur: Through Narkanda, Sarahan, and into the Sangla or Kalpa region. Green valleys, apple orchards, and temple towns.Kinnaur to Spiti: Through Nako, Tabo, and into Kaza. The landscape shifts from lush Kinnaur to the cold desert of Spiti. Monasteries, fossil villages, wide open sky.Kaza and High Villages: Key Monastery, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komic. One or two days exploring the heart of Spiti.Kaza to Chandratal: Via Losar and Kunzum Pass. The crossing takes you from Spiti into Lahaul, with Chandratal as the final destination before the descent.Chandratal to Manali to Delhi: Exit via the Atal Tunnel to Manali, then overnight bus or flight back to Delhi. This route takes 8 to 10 days. It offers gradual acclimatisation, far more variety, and a sense of having completed a real journey. Chandratal arrives at the end, not as a rushed destination but as a reward. Is a 4 to 5 Day Delhi to Chandratal Trip Worth It?Let us be honest about this, because it comes up in nearly every Delhi enquiry we get.A 4 day trip is possible. You take an overnight bus, arrive in Manali by morning, drive to Chandratal the same day or the next, camp one night, return to Manali, and catch an overnight bus back to Delhi. It works. But it is tight, and you will feel the road.A 5 day trip is noticeably better. That extra day lets you rest in Manali before heading to Chandratal, or it gives you a slower return with time to enjoy the Lahaul landscape. The difference between arriving at the lake exhausted and arriving ready to walk to the shore is real. For travellers who are physically fit, comfortable with overnight buses, and genuinely excited about mountain roads, the short trip can be excellent. For travellers who need more comfort, rest, or recovery time, the 5 day version is the minimum we recommend. And if you have 8 or more days, the Spiti circuit is a fundamentally better experience. You arrive at Chandratal relaxed, acclimatised, and with a week of extraordinary scenery already behind you.The right trip length is not about what is possible. It is about what will actually feel good.Best Itinerary Options from Delhi4 Days, 3 NightsDay 1: Overnight bus from Delhi to Manali (or morning flight to Kullu plus transfer).Day 2: Drive from Manali to Chandratal via Atal Tunnel, Gramphu, and Batal. Reach campsite by afternoon.Day 3: Sunrise walk to the lake. Return drive to Manali.Day 4: Manali to Delhi (overnight bus or evening flight from Kullu).Best for fit travellers with tight schedules who are comfortable with back to back long days.5 Days, 4 NightsDay 1: Overnight bus or flight to Manali. Rest and explore.Day 2: Drive to Sissu or Chatru. Overnight halt.Day 3: Drive to Chandratal campsite. Evening at camp. Night sky.Day 4: Sunrise at the lake. Return to Manali.Day 5: Manali to Delhi. The most popular short format. You arrive at Chandratal rested and have proper time at the lake.8 Days, 7 NightsDay 1: Delhi to Shimla or Chandigarh (overnight transfer).Day 2: Drive to Sangla or Kalpa via Kinnaur.Day 3: Kalpa or Nako. Acclimatisation.Day 4: Drive to Tabo or Kaza.Day 5: Kaza. Explore high villages.Day 6: Kaza to Chandratal via Kunzum Pass. Camp overnight.Day 7: Sunrise at lake. Drive to Manali.Day 8: Manali to Delhi.A compact Spiti circuit. Covers the key stops without lingering.9 Days, 8 NightsSame as above but with an extra night in Kinnaur or a rest day in Kaza. This version does not feel rushed. You have time at every stop.Best for first timers, families, and anyone who wants the full Spiti experience with Chandratal as the finale. Why Travel Coffee for Your Delhi to Chandratal TripWe plan Delhi origin trips differently because we understand the fatigue equation.Realistic Transfer Timing: We know how long the overnight bus actually takes, when flights get delayed, and how much rest you need before heading to altitude. Our itineraries are built around these realities, not around optimistic assumptions.Honest Route Guidance: If you tell us you have 4 days, we will plan a workable trip. But we will also tell you honestly if 5 days would be significantly better. We would rather plan the right trip than sell a tight one.Altitude Aware Planning: For short trips, the altitude gain from Manali to Chandratal is rapid. We build in halts and pacing that give your body time to adjust instead of pushing through.Local Support: We have ground teams in both Manali and Spiti. Whether your trip runs through Lahaul or the full circuit, there is someone local who knows the road and the conditions that day.Good Camp and Stay Selection: The camp at Chandratal and the stays along the route are personally vetted. Clean tents, warm sleeping bags, decent food, and staff who understand cold weather logistics.Flexibility When It Matters: Weather changes. Roads close. Buses arrive late. When things shift, we adjust the plan on the ground with calm communication and local knowledge. How to Get from Delhi to Manali (or Shimla): Your Travel Style OptionsOvernight Volvo BusThe most popular option. Comfortable semi sleeper or sleeper buses depart from Delhi in the evening and arrive in Manali by morning. Budget friendly and practical. The tradeoff is a long night on the road, but most travellers manage it well.Flight to KulluKullu Bhuntar airport is about 50 km from Manali. Flights from Delhi take roughly an hour. This saves you the overnight road journey and gets you to Manali fresh. Flights can be delayed or cancelled due to weather, especially in monsoon months. Book with flexibility.Private Cab from DelhiA 12 to 14 hour drive. Works well for groups or families who want to travel at their own pace with luggage space. More expensive than the bus, but comfortable and flexible on timing and stops.Self Drive from DelhiPossible for experienced drivers. Delhi to Manali is about 530 km of mostly highway. The real challenge begins after Manali, on the road to Chandratal. A high clearance SUV is essential for the Batal stretch. More on this below. For the Spiti CircuitIf you are doing the full circuit, you travel to Shimla or Chandigarh first. Overnight bus, train, or flight. From there, a private vehicle or group transfer takes you into Kinnaur and Spiti. Can You Drive from Delhi to Chandratal in Your Own Vehicle?Yes. But this needs honest planning. The Delhi to Manali highway is well maintained and straightforward. Any car can handle it. The challenge starts after the Atal Tunnel. The road from Gramphu to Batal and onward to Chandratal involves broken surfaces, loose gravel, water crossings, and steep climbs. A high clearance SUV is strongly recommended. Vehicles like the Mahindra Thar, Scorpio, Fortuner, or Innova Crysta handle this terrain well. Sedans and hatchbacks are a risk.If you are self driving, fill your fuel tank in Manali. Carry basic tools, a spare tyre, and enough water and snacks for the road. Mobile signal disappears after the tunnel. Download offline maps before you leave. No special driving permit is needed for Indian nationals on this route. However, the stretch beyond Batal can be closed temporarily due to weather, landslides, or water crossings. Check conditions locally in Manali before setting out.Self driving to Chandratal sounds exciting, and it can be. But the road is genuinely demanding after Batal. If this is your first time on a route like this, consider going with an experienced local driver instead.Best Time to Visit Chandratal from DelhiLate June to Early JulyThe road typically opens in this window. Conditions can be unpredictable. Some camps may not be fully operational yet. Best for flexible, experienced travellers.July and AugustThe classic window. Roads are at their most accessible. Camps at Chandratal are fully running. Rain is possible, especially in August, but the route is at its most reliable. Best for most travellers, especially first timers from Delhi.SeptemberWidely considered the finest month. Monsoon recedes. Skies clear. The landscape turns golden. Chandratal's colours are at their most vivid. Camps start closing toward late September. Plan early in the month if possible.Early OctoberThe end of the season. Camps may be closed. Cold conditions and early snowfall can close the road without warning. Only for flexible, well prepared travellers.WinterThe road to Chandratal is closed from November through May. No access from any direction.Safety, Altitude, and Who Should Not RushThe Fatigue FactorDelhi travellers start with a disadvantage. By the time you reach Manali after an overnight bus, you have already lost a night of proper sleep. Adding a 6 to 7 hour mountain drive on top of that pushes your body hard.If you feel exhausted, do not push to the campsite that same day. A halt in Sissu or Chatru can make the difference between enjoying the trip and enduring it.Altitude RealityFrom Delhi at near sea level to Chandratal at 4,300 metres is a dramatic change. On the short Manali route, this gain happens within 36 to 48 hours. Symptoms of altitude sickness, including headache, nausea, and breathlessness, are possible for anyone.Stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol the night before. Walk slowly at the campsite. Give your body time.Rough RoadsThe stretch from Gramphu to Chandratal is not a highway. Water crossings, broken surfaces, and steep sections are standard. A good driver and the right vehicle make all the difference.Who Should Plan a Longer TripTravellers over 55: A 5 day trip with a halt in Lahaul is better than a rushed 4 day sprint.Families with children under 10: The altitude, cold, and basic facilities make the short trip challenging for small children.People with respiratory or cardiac conditions: Rapid altitude gain from Delhi to Chandratal is genuinely risky. Consult your doctor. Consider the Shimla side Spiti circuit for gradual acclimatisation. For most healthy adults, the trip is safe, manageable, and deeply rewarding with the right pacing. What Affects the Cost of a Delhi to Chandratal TripEvery trip from Delhi is different, and the cost reflects the choices you make.Bus vs Flight: An overnight Volvo to Manali is significantly cheaper than a flight to Kullu. The flight saves time and energy but costs more.Short Trip vs Full Circuit: A 4 to 5 day Chandratal trip costs less than an 8 to 10 day Spiti circuit. More days mean more stays, more fuel, and more meals.Private vs Shared: A private vehicle and dedicated itinerary costs more than a group departure or shared transfers.Vehicle Type: A compact SUV for two costs differently from a Fortuner for a family or a tempo traveller for a group.Camp Quality: Basic camps at Chandratal are affordable. Upgraded camps with better tents and food cost more.Transfer Inclusions: Some packages include Delhi to Manali transfers. Others start from Manali. This changes the total significantly.Share your dates, group size, travel style, and preferences. We will send you a detailed, transparent quote.Practical Travel InformationMobile NetworkYour phone works in Delhi, on the highway to Manali, and in Manali itself. After the Atal Tunnel, signal drops sharply. Chandratal has no network. If doing the Spiti circuit, Kaza has limited connectivity.Download offline maps before you leave Delhi. Tell your family to expect radio silence for a day or two.CashWithdraw cash in Delhi or Manali. There are no ATMs between Manali and Chandratal. Camps and dhabas do not accept UPI or cards. Carry enough for meals, tips, and small emergencies.FuelIf self driving, fill up in Delhi and again in Manali. There is no fuel station between Manali and Chandratal. For the Spiti circuit, the next reliable pump after Shimla is in Kaza.PackingThermals, a fleece, and a windproof jacket. A warm cap and gloves for the campsite. Sturdy shoes with grip for the walk to the lake. Sunscreen and sunglasses for altitude UV.A headlamp, a reusable water bottle, and a small personal medical kit. Pack for both Delhi heat and Chandratal cold. The temperature gap between your start and your destination is enormous.WeatherDelhi may be 40 degrees when you leave. Chandratal may be below 5 degrees at night. Rain is possible, especially in July and August. A good rain jacket is essential. Do not trust the Delhi forecast for the mountains.Personal MedicineCarry your own prescription medicines, basic first aid, and altitude sickness medication if your doctor recommends it. Medical help is not available between Manali and Kaza.Start Planning Your Delhi to Chandratal Trip with Travel CoffeeWhether you have a long weekend or a full week, there is a way to reach Chandratal from Delhi that works for you. Best Places to Visit on a Chandratal Trip
Chandratal Lake
At 4,300 metres, Chandratal sits in a natural amphitheatre of barren ridges. The lake is roughly one kilometre around, crescent-shaped, and changes colour through the day. Mornings are usually still, with near-perfect reflections. The walk from camp is short but memorable, the lake appearing suddenly as you crest the final rise.
Kunzum Pass
At roughly 4,590 metres, Kunzum La connects Lahaul to Spiti. A small temple marks the top. The pass offers wide views of snow-covered ranges and valley systems on either side. Crossing Kunzum is a defining moment in any Chandratal itinerary.
Batal
Not a village so much as a collection of roadside shelters where travellers stop for tea. It sits at the junction between the Chandratal turnoff and the Kunzum route. The landscape is raw and glacial. Batal gives you a real sense of how remote this territory is.
Sissu
A green, relatively mild village in Lahaul Valley. Waterfalls, riverside views, and clean guesthouses make it a welcome rest point and a good acclimatization stop before pushing higher.
Losar
The first village on the Spiti side after crossing Kunzum. The valley opens up, the terrain shifts from grey rock to sandy brown, and the distinct character of Spiti begins. For combined Chandratal and Spiti trips, Losar is the gateway.
Kaza
The administrative centre of Spiti Valley, offering fuel, ATMs, basic medical support, and guesthouses. Also a base for visiting Key Monastery, Pin Valley, and Hikkim. Kaza adds cultural depth to the journey.
Key Monastery
Perched on a hilltop above the Spiti River, Key is the largest monastery in Spiti. The layered white and ochre structure against bare mountains is unforgettable. A visit brings spiritual and cultural texture to a Chandratal road trip.
Atal Tunnel
This 9.02-kilometre tunnel below Rohtang connects Manali to Lahaul year-round, saving hours of driving. For Chandratal-bound travellers, this is where the mountain journey truly begins.
Jispa
A small settlement along the Bhaga River in Lahaul. Jispa works well as an overnight stop, with simple and pleasant riverside camps.
Best Things to Do on a Chandratal Tour
Camp Under Open Sky
A night at over 4,200 metres with nothing between you and a canopy of stars is the highlight of most trips.
Watch Sunrise at the Lake
Reaching before dawn, when the water is perfectly still, gives you a view that few places on earth can match. The colour shifts as sunlight touches the ridges are slow and extraordinary.
Cross Kunzum Pass
Whether by car or bike, Kunzum is one of the most exhilarating stretches in Himalayan travel. The unpaved road, the altitude, and the vast emptiness make it genuinely thrilling.
Photograph the Night Sky
With zero light pollution and thin atmosphere, Chandratal is one of the finest astrophotography locations in India. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on clear nights.
Combine with a Full Spiti Road Trip
Adding Chandratal to a Spiti circuit creates one of the most complete high altitude road trips in India.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the route. Via Manali, 4 days is the bare minimum and 5 days is comfortable. Via the Spiti circuit, 8 to 10 days. The shorter trip is about getting to the lake efficiently. The longer trip is about the journey as a whole. Most travellers who choose 5 days over 4 say it was the best extra day they spent.
