Drung Waterfall in Winter 2026-27: When Does It Freeze & How to Visit

Kashmir14 minutes read
Drung Waterfall in Winter

If you are searching for the frozen Drung Waterfall in winter, you have probably seen one viral reel and want to know if it will actually look like that when you go.

Honest answer first. Nobody can promise you a fully frozen waterfall on a fixed date.

What we can do is tell you which months give the best chance, how the road and transport really work, and how to avoid paying for ice that is not there yet. Let us get into it.

Quick Answer: When Does Drung Waterfall Freeze?

Drung Waterfall (also spelt Drang) usually builds its best ice formations in January and February, when Kashmir stays cold for long stretches.

Late December can also freeze well during a strong cold spell. Early December is less predictable and is often still flowing or only part frozen.

No month guarantees a complete freeze. As of now, the exact freezing dates for winter 2026-27 are not known, so treat any photo you see as past evidence, not a forecast.

Where Is Drung Waterfall in Kashmir?

Here is the first thing most people get wrong. Drung is not inside Gulmarg town.

It sits near Drung village in Tangmarg, which falls in Baramulla district, a little below Gulmarg.

J&K Tourism lists it (under the spelling Drang) as a Tangmarg attraction, so do not panic if you see both spellings online. Drung and Drang are the same place, and getting the spelling right helps when you search for it on Maps.

Most guides put it at around 3 km from Tangmarg, though the exact driving distance changes with your starting point and the route your driver takes.

Gulmarg is commonly reported at around 13 to 15 km away. Srinagar is trickier.

Different sources quote anywhere from 42 to 60 km depending on the route, so we would not trust a single precise figure.

If you are mapping out the wider area first, our guide to the places to visit in Gulmarg gives you the full picture before you slot Drung in.

When Does Drung Waterfall Freeze in Winter?

This is the heart of the trip, so let us break it down month by month.

The short version is that cold duration matters more than any single cold night. The waterfall needs a long, steady freeze to build those thick formations you see in photos. One frosty evening does not do it.

Drung Waterfall in Early December

In early December, Kashmir is cold but often not cold enough for long enough. The freezing process may have only just started.

You might catch flowing water, thin ice at the edges, or a partial freeze. We would not promise thick ice this early, and we tell travellers the same before they lock in dates.

Drung Waterfall in Late December

By late December, a strong cold spell can start building real formations. Some years deliver beautifully, others stay patchy.

Drung looked frozen enough to draw visitors in December 2024, but that is history, not a guarantee that the same week repeats this year.

Drung Waterfall in January

January is usually your strongest window if the frozen look is the whole reason you are going. The cold settles in and holds for weeks.

Tourists were photographing a frozen Drung Waterfall in winter on 12 January 2026, which tells you the potential in this month is real. Again, treat it as past context, not a booking promise for January 2027.

Drung Waterfall in February

February often keeps the big formations going, so it is another solid month for ice. The one risk is a mid-winter warm patch.

A few mild, sunny days can start thawing the surface and change how it looks within a week. Kashmir weather does not read the calendar.

Does Drung Waterfall Stay Frozen in March?

By March, conditions get unpredictable. Some years hold ice into early March, many do not.

We would treat March as a bonus, not a plan. If frozen water is your main goal, aim earlier in the season.

For the bigger weather pattern, our snowfall in Kashmir breakdown and our best time to visit Kashmir guide both help you pick dates with your eyes open.

How Can You Check Whether Drung Waterfall Is Frozen Right Now?

Massive icicles hanging from the rocky cliffs at Drung Waterfall.jpg

Simple rule. Never book a frozen waterfall trip on the strength of last year’s viral video.

Ask a local operator or a reliable on-ground contact for recent, date-stamped photos. A Reel from last January tells you nothing about this week.

Check three separate things before you commit. Is the waterfall actually frozen right now, is the attraction currently open to visitors, and is the road to it drivable.

All three can change on their own, and one being fine does not mean the other two are.

If nobody can give you a live, date-confirmed update, treat the current condition as unknown and keep your plan flexible until you get one.

This is exactly why our team recommends keeping Drung flexible inside a winter itinerary, rather than building the whole day around it.

Is Drung Waterfall Open in Winter 2026-27?

Frozen Drung Waterfall showcasing beautiful natural ice formations in Kashmir.jpg

Drung reopened to tourists in November 2025 after a months-long security-related closure, which is why it is back on winter itineraries.

The official Baramulla district closure list dated 7 July 2026 does not include Drung. It does list some nearby spots, including Baba Reshi, so do not assume everything in the area is open.

A local guide also reported Drung open when checked on 29 September 2026. Good signs, but none of this promises it will be open on your specific winter date.

For current access, check with J&K Tourism and a locally verified contact before you travel. The government tourism page lists a Gulmarg Assistant Director number, 9419023611, though you should reconfirm it, since numbers change.

We would not promise a fully frozen waterfall or guaranteed access on a specific date, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

How to Reach Drung Waterfall During Winter

Srinagar in winter featuring beautiful snowy landscapes and traditional Kashmiri architecture.jpg

Getting to Drung Waterfall in winter is less about distance and more about road conditions and transport handovers. Here is how it works from each starting point.

Srinagar to Drung Waterfall

From Srinagar, you head towards Tangmarg on the same road you would take for Gulmarg, then branch off for Drung.

The drive is routine in clear weather and slow when it snows. We are not giving you an exact time or kilometre figure, because the route and conditions swing too much to trust a single number.

Tangmarg to Drung Waterfall

Tangmarg is the real base for Drung. The branch road to the waterfall is commonly described as around 3 km, but that figure varies and the surface depends on recent snow.

From here, many visitors switch to local transport for the last stretch. Whether you need to depends on how much snow is down and what your vehicle can handle that day.

Gulmarg to Drung Waterfall

If you are already up in Gulmarg, remember you have to come back down towards Tangmarg to reach Drung. It is not a quick hop across the hill.

Budget extra time for snow, traffic, any permissions and the transport handover. On a busy Gondola day, that backtrack can eat more of your afternoon than you expect.

Do You Need an ATV or Chain-Fitted Taxi to Reach Drung Waterfall?

Snow-covered roads leading to Sonmarg in Kashmir.jpg

This is where people get confused and sometimes overcharged, so read carefully.

An ATV ride is often sold as an experience, a short fun drive over snow. That is different from transport you actually need to reach the spot. An ATV is not compulsory everywhere.

What you may genuinely need is a local taxi fitted for snow, because a standard Srinagar car might not finish the last icy stretch safely.

The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering notes the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road is about 12 km and can need a capable four wheel drive or snow chains in winter.

On 16 January 2026, the local magistrate even issued a snow chain advisory for that Tangmarg to Gulmarg road during snowy conditions.

That advisory was for the main Gulmarg road, not a permanent law for the Drung branch road, so do not let anyone quote it at you as a fixed rule for Drung.

Before you pay, ask who runs the local transfer, whether you can use your own vehicle, what the charge covers, and whether it is one way or return. Our Kashmir taxi guide explains how these handovers usually work, so you are not negotiating blind.

How Much Does Visiting Drung Waterfall Cost in Winter?

Drung Waterfall in winter surrounded by snow-covered mountains near Gulmarg Kashmir.jpg

Costs for Drung Waterfall in winter come in separate buckets, and mixing them up is how people overspend.

You have possible admission, the taxi fare, any ATV ride, waiting charges if your driver holds for you, and optional extras. These are all different line items.

Multiple guides report no standard admission charge for Drung, but we could not confirm an official current fee, so treat that as likely but unverified.

On taxi and ATV rates, there is no official, confirmed 2026–27 fare we can quote you, and prices vary a lot by operator and snow. We will not make up a number.

Here is the money tip that actually protects you. Get a written, itemised quote before you sit in any vehicle, and make them spell out whether it is per person or per vehicle, one way or return.

That single question saves more than any roadside bargaining.

Also check what your main trip already covers. Our Kashmir winter package inclusions guide shows what is usually built into a package and what you pay separately on the day.

Can You Visit Drung Waterfall and Gulmarg on the Same Day?

Travellers exploring Gulmarg during a Kashmir winter holiday.jpg

Yes, and most people do, because they are on the same approach through Tangmarg.

If you have a pre-booked Gondola slot, make that your anchor and fit Drung around it. A Gondola ticket with time is the one thing you cannot easily shift.

Depending on traffic, daylight and snow, you either stop at Drung on the way up or catch it on the way back down. Keep the order flexible rather than fixed to the clock.

A realistic Drung stop is often 30 to 60 minutes, but snow, queues and transport changes can stretch that, so do not plan it to the minute.

If you want a calmer version, one night in Gulmarg takes the rush out of it. You get the morning for the Gondola and spare time for Drung without racing daylight.

Our Kashmir Snow Escape with Gulmarg Stay is built around exactly that kind of relaxed pace.

What Is Drung Waterfall Actually Like in Winter?

Drung Waterfall in January featuring spectacular frozen ice formations.jpg

When the freeze is on, Drung turns into a wall of thick ice with water locked mid-fall. That is the shot everyone wants, and it is genuinely worth the detour when it looks like that.

When it is only part frozen, you get a mix of flowing water and ice patches. Still pretty, but not the postcard. Managing that expectation is half the battle.

The setting is simple. A waterfall, snow around it, and a short time on your feet near the base. It is a photo stop and a quick snow experience, not a full day out.

Be ready for rough patches too. A July 2026 local report flagged concerns about the road condition and mobile network in the area, so your phone may drop signal.

We mention that as a reported issue, not a promise that phones never work. But plan as if you might be offline for a while.

This is a short visit by nature, so pair it with Gulmarg rather than treating it as the main event of your trip.

Is Drung Waterfall Safe for Children, Families and Elderly Travellers?

Drung Waterfall covered in ice during the winter season in Kashmir.jpg

It can be, with the right care, but it is not a smooth paved attraction.

The ground near the falls gets slippery and uneven, and ice can fall from the formations above. Keep a safe distance and never let kids climb onto or under the ice.

Shoes with proper grip make the biggest difference. Smooth-soled sneakers on packed ice are how people slip and hurt themselves.

How easy it is for elderly travellers depends entirely on where your vehicle can stop and how far you then walk on snow. Some days that walk is short, some days it is not.

We would not call Drung wheelchair friendly or automatically easy for older travellers. If someone in your group struggles on icy, uneven ground, plan a shorter look from a stable spot rather than pushing to the base.

What Should You Wear and Carry to Drung Waterfall?

Drung Eco Village.jpg

Dress like you are spending real time in the snow, because you are.

Wear thermal layers, an insulated waterproof jacket, warm socks and gloves. Cotton under a jacket will leave you cold and damp fast.

On your feet, waterproof shoes or boots with good traction are non-negotiable on icy ground. This is the one item people skimp on and regret.

Carry cash, since card machines and signals are unreliable out here. A fully charged phone or power bank matters too, given the network can drop.

Water, a small snack and lip balm round it out. Nothing fancy, just enough to stay warm, steady and reachable for a couple of hours in the cold.

What If Drung Waterfall Is Not Frozen or the Road Is Closed?

Frozen river and snowy mountain views in Sonmarg Valley.jpg

It happens, and it is better to have a plan B than to sulk about it.

If the frozen look was your main reason for going and the water is still flowing, the visit loses a lot of its pull. Be honest with yourself about whether the detour is still worth it that day.

The smarter move is to pour that time back into your already planned Gulmarg sightseeing, the Gondola, the snow slopes and the views up top.

One caution. Do not fill the gap with spots still on the official closure list, especially Baba Reshi, unless a newer order has clearly reopened it. Check first.

Our guide to the places to visit in Kashmir in winter gives you plenty of solid alternatives if Drung does not work out.

Is Drung Waterfall Worth Visiting in Winter?

Straight answer. Drung Waterfall in winter is worth it when the timing and conditions line up, mainly in January and February when the ice is thick and the road is open.

For an early December trip, or when the extra taxi and ATV cost and the backtracking outweigh a short stop, treat it as optional. Not every itinerary needs it.

Weigh it against your whole trip, not against one Instagram frame. If you are already doing Gulmarg and the falls are frozen and reachable, add it. If any of those pieces is shaky, skip it without guilt.

What we tell our travellers is simple. Go for the overall Kashmir winter experience, and let Drung be a lovely bonus when it delivers, not the thing you gambled the day on.

If you want to see how it slots into a full trip, browse our Kashmir tour packages and build around dates that give you the best shot at the frozen view.
