Best Places to Visit in Kashmir in Winter 2026-27: Where to Go and What's Actually Open

Best Places to Visit in Kashmir in Winter

If you are searching for the best places to visit in Kashmir in winter, here is the thing most lists will not tell you.

A place being on the map is not the same as that place being reachable. And a road being open is not the same as the viewpoint, glacier or activity at the end of it being open.

Winter in the Kashmir Valley splits every destination into three buckets. Once you understand them, planning gets much easier and a lot less stressful.

Quick Answer: What Are the Best Places to Visit in Kashmir in Winter?

For a trip between December 2026 and February 2027, build your plan around Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam town. These three usually stay reachable on normal weather days.

Add Sonamarg only if conditions allow. Treat Doodhpathri and Yusmarg as weather-dependent bonus days, not fixed stops.

Fresh snowfall is never guaranteed. You might land to deep snow, or to brown meadows waiting for the first fall.

So plan the places first and keep the snow as a happy surprise. If you want a route matched to your exact dates, our customised Kashmir tour packages are built around what is actually open that week.

Which Places in Kashmir Are Actually Open in Winter 2026-27?

Which Places in Kashmir Are Actually Open in Winter 2026-27?

Here is what most tourists get wrong. They assume December means guaranteed deep snow everywhere, so they book a packed seven-spot itinerary.

Then half those spots turn out to be shut for winter, and the snow has not even fallen yet. The trip feels like a letdown, and it did not have to.

In our experience helping people plan this season, the smarter move is to sort every name into three honest groups before you book anything.

Places Usually Suitable for a Winter Itinerary

Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam town are the three you can usually count on. They have proper winter stays, local transport and things to do even on a grey day.

Srinagar sits low in the valley, so it stays reachable in most conditions. Gulmarg is higher and is the actual snow destination, though the climb up can need the right vehicle.

Pahalgam town itself, down by the river, is calm and easy in winter. The catch is that "the town is open" does not mean every valley around it is open, which brings us to the next group.

Places Where Winter Access Must Be Confirmed

This is where the three-bucket idea really matters. For Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Drung Waterfall and the side valleys near Pahalgam, you have to check three separate things.

One, is the road to the place open today. Two, is the specific attraction at that place open. Three, is the activity you want actually running.

A road can be clear while the glacier point beyond it stays shut. A meadow can be reachable while the only road in gets buried for weeks after one heavy spell. Confirm all three, not just the first.

Places You Should Not Plan Without Explicit Clearance

Some famous names are, as things stand, off the table for winter unless authorities say otherwise. The Anantnag district notice dated 7 July 2026 lists Baisaran, Chandanwari, Tulian Lake, Daksum, Sinthan Top and Margan Top as closed.

That notice shows an end date of 31 December 2026, but that date is not proof of reopening in January 2027. New orders can extend or change it.

Aharbal appears on the Kulgam district closed list too, though some travel sites disagree. Tosamaidan is on Budgam's July 2026 closed list. Do not build a trip around any of these until you have current clearance.

What Are the Best Places to Visit in Kashmir in Winter?

With the three buckets clear, here are the seven names worth your time this winter, and exactly what to expect from each.

Gulmarg: Best for Snow, Skiing and the Gondola

Gulmarg: Best for Snow, Skiing and the Gondola

If you come to Kashmir for snow, Gulmarg is the main event. Official tourism references place it around 54 to 60 km from Srinagar, high enough that it holds snow when lower areas do not.

The big meadow turns into a wide white field for sledging and snow play, and it is India's best-known skiing base. The Gondola cable car is the headline ride, and we will cover its winter quirks in detail further down.

A quick honest note on the drive. The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering says the Tangmarg to Gulmarg stretch is around 12 km, and that 4x4 vehicles or snow chains may be needed in winter.

Our team usually suggests an overnight stay in Gulmarg instead of a rushed day trip. Mornings are calmer for the Gondola and the snow, before the day crowd arrives from Srinagar.

Srinagar: Best for Dal Lake, Culture and Comfortable Winter Sightseeing

Srinagar: Best for Dal Lake, Culture and Comfortable Winter Sightseeing

Srinagar is your soft landing. Even when the weather closes the higher roads, the city gives you full days without a long, risky drive.

Dal Lake is the obvious anchor, with its houseboats and Shikara boats. During severe cold the lake can freeze in parts, but complete freezing is not a given, and whether a Shikara runs depends on the day's conditions.

Nigeen Lake is the quieter, cleaner cousin of Dal if you want a calmer houseboat stay. The old city, the Hazratbal shrine and a few of the Mughal gardens round out an easy winter day.

For food, Srinagar carries you through the cold. Kahwa, the warm saffron tea, is everywhere, and the old city is where you find harissa, the thick winter morning dish locals swear by. A hot wazwan dinner is the right way to end a snowy day.

Pahalgam: Best for Quiet River Views and a Relaxed Winter Stay

Pahalgam: Best for Quiet River Views and a Relaxed Winter Stay

Pahalgam town sits in the Lidder Valley, and in winter it is slow, cold and genuinely peaceful. The Lidder River running past patches of snow is the whole mood here, and it is lovely for couples who want to do nothing in particular.

Now the honest part. Betaab Valley and Aru Valley are the two big draws around Pahalgam, but their winter road and visitor access must be checked, not assumed.

And Baisaran and Chandanwari sit on that official closed list we mentioned. So treat Pahalgam town as the destination and anything beyond it as a maybe, confirmed on the day.

Sonamarg: Best for Dramatic High-Altitude Winter Scenery

Sonamarg: Best for Dramatic High-Altitude Winter Scenery

Sonamarg is around 87 km from Srinagar, and the story here changed with the Sonamarg Tunnel, inaugurated on 13 January 2025. The main tunnel runs around 6.4 km and the government describes much improved all-weather connectivity to the town.

But read that carefully. Better connectivity to the town is not a promise of access to the higher sights. Thajiwas Glacier, Zero Point and Zoji La are a separate question entirely during severe winter.

Zoji La in particular is the gateway towards Ladakh and Zanskar, and that is a different, far harder proposition in winter. Confirm Sonamarg as a day trip only after checking current road status, because services there also run seasonally.

Drung Waterfall: Best for a Potential Frozen Waterfall Experience

Drung Waterfall.jpg

Drung Waterfall, also spelled Drang, sits in the Tangmarg area near Gulmarg. In a cold enough spell it can form ice, and a frozen waterfall is a genuinely special sight.

But we will not promise you ice. Whether it freezes depends on temperature in the days before you arrive, so some winters it is solid and some it is just cold running water.

The approach can be slippery, and local access rules can change, so confirm how you are getting there. If it works out, it pairs neatly with a Gulmarg day since the two are close.

Doodhpathri: Best for Snowy Meadows When Accessible

Doodhpathri: Best for Snowy Meadows When Accessible

Doodhpathri is around 42 km from Srinagar, a wide meadow that turns into a clean sheet of snow in winter. On a clear-road day it is one of the prettiest, least crowded spots you can reach.

Here is the warning straight from the district. Budgam officials say heavy winter snowfall can make Doodhpathri inaccessible for several months, not days.

So this is a true weather-dependent bonus. If the road is open and clear the morning you want to go, take it. If it is not, do not fight it, and do not pre-pay for a day that the snow has already decided.

Yusmarg: Best for Peaceful Winter Scenery on a Clear-Road Day

Yusmarg: Best for Peaceful Winter Scenery on a Clear-Road Day

Yusmarg is roughly 47 to 53 km from Srinagar, depending on where you measure from. It is a meadow backed by pine forest, and on a good day it is quiet in the best way.

Budgam district says snowfall can shut the Yusmarg road for weeks. So, like Doodhpathri, it only works when conditions line up.

We will not promise trekking or overnight facilities here in winter, because those depend entirely on the season and the suppliers. Treat it as a scenic half-day if the road cooperates. For the fuller picture on these and more, see our guide to the best places to visit in Kashmir.

Which Places Are Best for Snow in December, January and February?

Which Places Are Best for Snow in December, January and February?

Each winter month feels different in Kashmir. Knowing which one you are travelling in helps you set the right expectations.

Kashmir in December

Early December is the unpredictable bit. Some years the snow is already piling up in Gulmarg, other years the valley is still waiting for the first proper fall.

Your best odds for snow this month are higher up, in and around Gulmarg, rather than down in Srinagar. December also brings the Christmas and New Year rush, so stays and transport get busy and pricier.

Book early if your dates are fixed around the holidays. The snow may or may not show on cue, but the crowds certainly will.

Kashmir in January

January is when Chillai Kalan sets in, the roughly forty harshest days of winter that run from late December deep into January. This is when settled snow is most likely and the valley looks its most wintry.

It is also when disruption peaks. Heavy snow and icy roads can delay flights and shut roads, so build slack into your plan.

For scale, the India Meteorological Department reported 46 cm of snow at Gulmarg and 18 cm at Pahalgam in the 24 hours ending 23 January 2026. That was one big spell, not a daily average or a forecast, but it tells you how serious a January storm can get.

Kashmir in February

February often keeps good snow at height while the worst of the cold starts to ease. Sightseeing can feel a little more comfortable than peak January.

Skiers still get solid conditions in Gulmarg through much of this month in a normal year. Nothing about weather is guaranteed, and prices move with demand.

If you want a clearer, month-by-month read, we break it all down in our snowfall in Kashmir guide.

Is Sonamarg Really Open in Winter?

Is Sonamarg Really Open in Winter?

This is the most common question we get since the tunnel opened, so let us be precise about it.

The Sonamarg Tunnel, inaugurated on 13 January 2025 and running around 6.4 km, has genuinely improved all-weather access to Sonamarg town. That part is real and it is a big change from the old days of a fully seasonal road.

But do not stretch that into more than it is. The tunnel helps you reach the town. It does not guarantee Thajiwas Glacier, Zero Point or Zoji La, which can stay shut in severe winter.

Weather closures still happen, and some accommodation and services there run only in season. So treat a Sonamarg winter day trip as something to confirm the morning you go, not a fixed certainty because the tunnel exists.

Can You Ride the Gulmarg Gondola During Winter?

Can You Ride the Gulmarg Gondola During Winter?

The Gulmarg Gondola is the ride everyone wants, and it runs in two stages. Phase 1 goes up to Kongdoori, and Phase 2 climbs higher towards Apharwat.

The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation is the official operator. It advertises preventive maintenance closures on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, and online booking up to 120 days ahead.

Here is the insider bit most guides skip

Book your tickets on the official portal in advance, avoid those two Mondays, and you dodge both the maintenance shutdown and the touts at the base. Do not hand cash to someone promising to skip the queue.

Winter can still close the Gondola on short notice. Strong wind or fresh snowfall often shuts Phase 2 even when Phase 1 is running, so going up does not guarantee you reach the top.

We are not quoting a fare here because the figures online conflict, and the honest answer is to check the official site, where tickets and rides stay subject to actual operation.

One more thing on getting there. The Tangmarg to Gulmarg climb may need a 4x4 or snow chains in winter, so sort your vehicle before the day.

If you are still torn between the big three, we compared Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg side by side so you can pick what suits your trip.

Which Popular Kashmir Attractions Should You Skip in Winter?

Which Popular Kashmir Attractions Should You Skip in Winter?

Not every famous name deserves a slot in a winter plan. Some will waste your days, and a few you simply cannot enter right now.

Attractions Affected by Official Restrictions

The July 2026 administrative notices from districts like Anantnag, Kulgam and Budgam list several sites as closed. These include Baisaran, Chandanwari, Tulian Lake, Daksum, Sinthan Top, Tosamaidan and Aharbal where relevant.

Do not plan around any of them on the assumption they will reopen on a particular date. New orders can supersede the old lists at any time, in either direction.

What we tell every traveller booking a winter trip with us is simple. Lock the destinations, keep the exact attractions flexible, and treat any single day's access as something to confirm that morning rather than something to assume.

Attractions That Are Seasonally Inaccessible

Some places are shut by snow, not by order. Gurez, reached over Razdan Pass, has a main route that Bandipora district says closes during winter snowfall, so skip it as a routine winter excursion.

High-altitude treks and snowbound back roads fall in the same bucket. They are summer and autumn plans, not January ones.

And here is one to save your money on. The Srinagar Tulip Garden is a spring attraction that blooms around late March and April. In winter there are no tulips to see, so do not let anyone sell you a "tulip garden visit" in December.

Which Kashmir Winter Destinations Suit Families, Couples and Adventure Travellers?

Which Kashmir Winter Destinations Suit Families, Couples and Adventure Travellers?

The best plan depends on who is travelling. The same seven places get arranged very differently for a family, a couple or a skier.

Families and First-Time Snow Travellers

If this is the kids' first snow, keep it simple and warm. A plan built around Srinagar and Gulmarg, with cosy stays and flexible days, does the job without long risky drives.

Srinagar gives you easy backup days when the weather turns. Gulmarg gives you the snow play. That is honestly enough for a first family trip, and it leaves room to breathe.

Couples and Honeymooners

Couples get the most out of the slow side of Kashmir. A relaxed Pahalgam stay by the river, a houseboat night on a Srinagar lake, and a day of snow in Gulmarg make a lovely mix.

You do not need to chase every spot. Fewer places, more time, is the right rhythm for a honeymoon. Our Kashmir honeymoon experience is shaped around exactly that pace.

Skiers and Adventure Travellers

If you ski, give Gulmarg the lion's share of your trip and do not dilute it with distant day trips. The snow and the slopes are the reason you are here.

Arrange qualified instructions if you are learning, and check lift status and snow conditions before each day. Phase 2 and the upper slopes depend on weather, so stay flexible and never ski off-piste without the right guidance.

How Many Days Are Enough to Explore Kashmir in Winter?

How Many Days Are Enough to Explore Kashmir in Winter?

Winter is not the season to squeeze the whole valley into a tight schedule. Roads slow down, and a single storm can eat a day.

A Realistic 4 Nights / 5 Days Winter Plan

For most people, four nights and five days is the sweet spot. Give the bulk of it to Srinagar and Gulmarg, the two most dependable winter bases.

Add Pahalgam or Sonamarg only if your days and the conditions genuinely allow it. Do not try to cram all four into five days, because one bad-weather morning and the whole plan collapses.

This plan maps almost exactly to our Best of Kashmir 5D4N tour, which keeps the route tight and sensible.

A More Relaxed 6 Nights / 7 Days Winter Plan

With six nights and seven days, you can actually slow down. Spread overnight stays across Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam so you are not packing and moving every single morning.

Keep Sonamarg as an optional, weather-dependent day rather than a fixed one. Leave a contingency day too, and keep your airport-transfer timing on the relaxed side so a snow delay does not cost you your flight.

What Extra Costs and Arrangements Should You Expect in Kashmir During Winter?

What Extra Costs and Arrangements Should You Expect in Kashmir During Winter?

Winter adds a few line items that summer trips do not have, and it is worth knowing them before you go so nothing surprises you.

Local sightseeing in some areas runs through union vehicles, and winter conditions may mean swapping to a 4x4 or adding snow chains on certain routes. Gondola tickets and any paid snow activities sit on top of your base trip.

We are not putting rupee figures on these, because taxi, chain, activity and heating charges vary by supplier and day. The honest move is to agree to any vehicle or activity price before you commit, not after.

One thing we always flag

Confirm heating and hot-water arrangements directly with your stay, and confirm exactly what your package does and does not include. A "heated room" can mean very different things across properties in January.

For choosing a base, our guide on where to stay in Kashmir compares the main towns. And pack properly, because the cold here is real. Our Kashmir packing list covers what actually keeps you warm at these temperatures.

How Can You Check What's Open Before Your Kashmir Trip?

This is the single habit that saves winter trips. A road being open last week is no evidence it will be open tomorrow, so build checking into your routine.

Do a first check before you book anything, so your plan starts from reality. Then check again two to three days before you leave, when the near-term weather is clearer.

Then check once more on each sightseeing morning, before you set off anywhere beyond your base town. Yes, every morning. In January it matters.

Lean on the right sources, not random blogs. Current official district notices, the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation announcements, India Meteorological Department warnings and Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police advisories are the ones that actually decide your day.
