Roghi Village
A quiet Kinnauri village near Kalpa reached by an orchard walk or one of India's most intimidating cliff roads, with afternoon mountain light and genuine village life
What makes it special
Roghi is a small Kinnauri village about 2 km from Kalpa on foot, or 8 km by a narrow cliff road that has earned a reputation as one of the most intimidating drives in the Indian Himalaya. Most people come for the cliff edge viewpoint on the road (commonly called Suicide Point), stay for the village itself, and leave with the road etched into their memory more than anything else.
The village sits at roughly 2,700 metres on a slope above the Sutlej gorge. It is older and quieter than Kalpa, with traditional wooden houses, a small temple dedicated to Roghi Mata, apple and apricot orchards, and the kind of everyday life that Kalpa's growing tourism has begun to dilute. The community here is primarily Buddhist. In summer, a couple of small homestays take guests. In winter, the road becomes impassable and the village is effectively cut off.
The afternoon is the time to be here. The western light catches the Kinner Kailash range from a different angle than Kalpa, warming the snow faces while the orchard terraces below stretch out in golden light. It is a different perspective on the same mountain, and some photographers prefer it to the more famous sunrise view from Kalpa.
The cliff viewpoint called Suicide Point sits about 3 km from Kalpa along the road to Roghi. The name is dramatic and unfortunate. It refers to the sheer vertical drop, hundreds of metres down to the Sutlej, not to any specific incident. The authorities have installed railings and a small platform. It gives you a stomach level sense of how deep the valley really is. Stop, look, take a photo if you want, and move on. It is a five minute stop, not the main event. The main event is either the village beyond or the mountain view from the orchard slopes.
What is Roghi Village?
Roghi is a small Kinnauri village about 2 km from Kalpa, reachable by a dramatic cliff road or a gentle orchard walk. People come for the cliff viewpoint (Suicide Point), the traditional village, and the afternoon light on the Kinner Kailash range. Half a day from Kalpa is the right amount of time.
Should I walk or drive to Roghi?
Walk. The footpath through orchards takes about 45 minutes, is flat and easy, and avoids the cliff road entirely. The cliff road is 8 km of single lane road carved into vertical rock face with no barriers. Only take the road with an experienced local driver, never after dark, and only if heights do not bother you. Walk there, drive back is a good combination.

2 approach routes with seasonal access
From Kalpa (footpath through orchards)
Generally April to OctoberA gentle footpath through apple and apricot orchards connects Kalpa to Roghi in about 45 minutes to an hour. Flat to slightly downhill. Safe, easy, and the better way to arrive for most people. Walk there and take a taxi back, or walk both ways.
From Kalpa (cliff road)
Generally April to October; impassable in winterA single lane road carved into near vertical cliff face. 8 km of intense exposure with drops of hundreds of metres, no barriers in many sections, and barely enough room for one vehicle. An experienced local driver is essential. Do not drive this yourself unless you are fully comfortable with extreme mountain roads. Daylight only. No monsoon drives. The cliff viewpoint (Suicide Point) is about 3 km along this road.

Season-by-season breakdown to help you plan
Clear skies, warm orchards, and the cliff road at its most accessible.
This is the main window for visiting Roghi. Daytime temperatures sit around 15 to 22°C, dropping to 6 to 10°C at night. The cliff road is generally open and in reasonable condition. The footpath through orchards is dry and easy. Apple and apricot trees are green, and the village is fully active with a couple of homestays taking guests. The Kinner Kailash views are reliable most mornings. Long weekends in May and June bring more vehicles on the narrow cliff road, which can cause delays. Visit midweek if you can.
Green orchards but risky roads. The approach highway is the real concern.
Roghi itself gets less rainfall than the lower Kinnaur highway, and the orchards turn thick and lush. But the road from Rampur to Reckong Peo is serious landslide territory in this season. Highway closures of a few hours to a few days are common. The cliff road to Roghi becomes slippery and more dangerous after rain. Do not drive it in wet conditions. Even the footpath can be muddy and less comfortable. Cloud cover reduces the Kinner Kailash views most afternoons. If you visit, build in buffer days and check road conditions before leaving Kalpa.
Apple harvest, golden light, and the clearest mountain views of the year.
Quietly the best time to visit. The apple harvest runs through October, and the orchards around the village are full of fruit and activity. Skies are the clearest of the year, making the afternoon Kinner Kailash views from Roghi exceptionally sharp. Crowds thin out after the summer rush. Daytime temperatures are comfortable at 10 to 18°C, but nights drop sharply toward freezing by late October. Pack proper warm layers for the walk back. By mid November, early snow is possible and the cliff road may start becoming unreliable.
Road impassable. Village effectively cut off by snow and ice.
The cliff road to Roghi becomes impassable in winter due to ice and snow accumulation. Even the orchard footpath can be risky with snow cover and frozen patches. The village is effectively cut off from regular visitors. Temperatures drop to minus 8°C or lower at night, and the one or two homestays shut down for the season. The Kinnaur highway to Kalpa generally stays open through winter, but the side road to Roghi does not. Do not plan a Roghi visit between late November and March. If you are in Kalpa during winter, enjoy the snow views from town instead.

Get to Roghi: the cliff road or the orchard walk
20 min drive or 45 min to 1 hour walkThe 8 km road from Kalpa to Roghi is carved into a near vertical cliff face. It is narrow, mostly single lane, and has drops that go straight down to the Sutlej with no barrier in many sections. An experienced local driver is essential. Do not attempt this in your own car unless you are genuinely comfortable with extreme mountain roads. The road surface is generally decent, but the exposure is intense. Drive only in daylight. The return is slightly less nerve wracking because the cliff is on the passenger side rather than the driver's side.
The alternative is to walk. A footpath through orchards connects Kalpa to Roghi in about 45 minutes to an hour, avoiding the road entirely. The walk is flat to gently downhill, passes through apple and apricot trees, and is the calmer, arguably better way to arrive. Walk there, drive back (or the reverse) for the best of both.
Stop at the cliff viewpoint (Suicide Point)
5 to 10 minAbout 3 km from Kalpa on the Roghi road, a sharp bend opens onto a sheer vertical drop to the Sutlej gorge. The authorities have built a small viewing platform with railings. The drop is real and stomach churning. Stay behind the railing. Take your photo from a safe distance. The name is dramatic and misleading. This is a viewpoint, not a destination. Five minutes is plenty. Do not lean over edges for photos.
Walk through the village and the orchards
30 min to 1 hourThe village is small enough to walk through in half an hour. Stone and timber houses in the Kinnauri style, carved balconies, slate roofs, narrow lanes. The Roghi Mata temple sits in the village, a small local shrine without the architectural complexity of the temples in Kalpa but with its own quiet presence. Ask before photographing anyone. The orchards around the village are beautiful in every season but especially in late September and October when the harvest is on.
Watch the afternoon light on Kinner Kailash
30 minIn the late afternoon, the western light hits the Kinner Kailash range from a different angle than you get in Kalpa. The snow faces glow warm while the Sutlej gorge drops into shadow below. Some photographers prefer this afternoon view from Roghi to the more famous sunrise from Kalpa. Find a spot in the orchards above the village and watch the light change for twenty minutes. Bring a jacket. The temperature drops fast once the sun gets low.
