Where to Stay in Kashmir in 2026: Srinagar vs Gulmarg vs Pahalgam vs Sonamarg

Most first timers ask us for a hotel name. The more useful question is where to stay in Kashmir on each night of your trip.
Your base decides how many hours you spend in a car, how early you reach the Gondola, and whether Pahalgam feels like a holiday or a rushed drive.
Here is what most tourists get wrong. They either sleep every night in Srinagar and drive out each morning, or they try to sleep in all four places in five nights.
Both plans leave you tired. One repeats the same highway again and again. The other has you packing a suitcase almost every day.
Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay in Kashmir in 2026?
Split your nights. Most first time visitors enjoy Kashmir more with two or three bases than with one.
Use Srinagar as your transport and lake base. Sleep in Gulmarg if the Gondola, skiing or snow matters to you.
Give Pahalgam its own nights, because a rushed day trip wastes it. Visit Sonamarg from Srinagar on a short trip, and give it one night only if you shoot photos, travel slowly or continue onward.
For a six night trip, we suggest 3 Srinagar nights in total, 1 Gulmarg night and 2 Pahalgam nights, with Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar. Treat this as our starting point, not a rule.
If you want us to shape these nights around your dates, our customised Kashmir tour packages begin with exactly this kind of split.
Should You Stay in Srinagar and Take Day Trips, or Change Hotels Around Kashmir?

Srinagar wins on convenience. You get the airport, city restaurants, regular hotels and the lake, all in one place.
The catch is repetition. With Srinagar as your only base, you drive to Gulmarg and back, to Pahalgam and back, and to Sonamarg and back.
Changing hotels costs you packing time and one extra checkout per move. It pays back when you want something a day trip cannot give you.
That means reaching the Gondola at opening time, a quiet evening with the mountains around you, a snow focused stay, or two slow days in Pahalgam without watching the clock.
In our experience, travellers who say Kashmir "felt like one long road trip" almost always used Srinagar for everything. People who moved once or twice rarely tell us that.
Still, neither approach wins for everyone. A family with a toddler may happily accept more driving to avoid repacking. A couple on a slow holiday may prefer three different beds.
Before you decide, read our list of places to visit in Kashmir and mark the ones you truly care about. Your bases should follow those priorities, not the other way round.
How Many Nights Should You Spend in Each Kashmir Destination?

These splits come from how we plan trips for our own travellers. Adjust them to your pace, season and interests.
If You Have 5 Nights / 6 Days
We suggest 2 nights in Srinagar, 1 night in Gulmarg and 2 nights in Pahalgam.
Resist the urge to add a Sonamarg night here. On a trip this short, a fourth base means a hotel change almost every day, and you spend more time checking in than looking around.
If You Have 6 Nights / 7 Days
We suggest 3 Srinagar nights in total, 1 in Gulmarg and 2 in Pahalgam.
Here is an insider tip most itineraries miss. Your Srinagar nights do not need to sit together.
Keep one Srinagar night at the very end. You wake up close to the airport on departure day instead of driving down from the mountains with a flight to catch.
Sonamarg fits as a day trip from Srinagar if the season, road conditions and your pace suit it. Check the road status close to your date.
This also saves money. A Sonamarg day trip keeps you in your existing Srinagar room, so you skip paying for an extra hotel night and a luggage move.
If You Have 7 or 8 Nights
Now you have one or two spare nights, and where they go depends on what you love.
A photographer or slow traveller can add a Sonamarg night. A skier or snow lover should add a second Gulmarg night.
A traveller who wants a calm valley holiday can add a third Pahalgam night. We do not believe one split fits every group, so push back on anyone who says it does.
What Is the Best Area to Stay in Srinagar?
The best area to stay in Srinagar depends on one choice: lake atmosphere or easy road access. Most first timers pick between the lake belt and the city hotel areas.
Once you pick your base, our guide to places to visit in Srinagar helps you plan your city days around it.
Dal Lake and Boulevard
This is the classic first trip choice. You wake up to the lake, you walk to a shikara ghat, and Srinagar looks like the photos that made you book the trip.
The location works for logistics too. District Srinagar puts Dal Lake about 5 km from Lal Chowk and 17 km from Srinagar airport.
Our favourite small ritual here costs very little. Order a cup of kahwa from a vendor who paddles up to your shikara on Dal Lake in the morning.
We tell our travellers to sip it slowly with the boat drifting. It feels like the real start of the trip.
Central Srinagar, Rajbagh and City Hotel Areas
Land hotels in central Srinagar and Rajbagh suit travellers who want a road right outside the door, regular hotel rooms and restaurants close by.
They also make departure days simpler. Your driver pulls up outside, you load the bags, and you leave.
Older travellers and families with heavy luggage often prefer this. The trade off is simple: you lose the lake mood unless you drive over for a shikara ride.
Should You Choose a Houseboat or Hotel?
Think of it this way. A houseboat gives you the experience, and a land hotel gives you easy logistics.
On a houseboat, you sleep on the water and step straight into a shikara. Mornings feel slow and very Kashmiri.
A land hotel gives you direct road access, simpler luggage handling and an easier early exit for flights or long drives.
What we tell our travellers: if you love the idea of a houseboat, give it one or two of your Srinagar nights. If you travel with elderly parents or lots of bags, a land hotel usually makes the trip smoother.
We cover the Dal Lake versus Nigeen Lake decision in a separate detailed guide, so we keep this part short.
Is Gulmarg Worth Staying Overnight, or Should You Visit from Srinagar?

Gulmarg sits about 56 km from Srinagar. Government tourism training information puts the drive at around two hours in normal conditions.
That sounds like an easy day trip. The Gondola timings change the maths.
The J&K Cable Car Corporation currently gives Gondola boarding from 8:00 AM, entry closing at 3:30 PM and the last return at 5:00 PM.
Here is the timing tip that changes your whole Gulmarg day. If you sleep in Gulmarg, you reach the Gondola for the 8:00 AM start without a two hour drive first.
From Srinagar, you would need to leave around 6:00 AM to reach boarding time, and any traffic delay eats into your mountain hours.
One more rule catches people out. The operator closes the Gondola on the second and fourth Monday of every month for preventive maintenance.
We have seen travellers book their only Gulmarg night on one of these Mondays. Check the calendar before you fix your date.
Be honest with yourself about one thing too. A Gulmarg night does not guarantee the Gondola runs. Weather and operational decisions can still pause it.
Safety warning: the final 12 km from Tangmarg to Gulmarg climbs steeply. In winter snow, official tourism training information warns you may need a suitable 4x4 or snow chains.
Confirm with your driver before you leave Srinagar. Do not let anyone push a regular car up that stretch in snow.
Near the Gondola and Main Gulmarg Area
This is where to stay in Gulmarg if the Gondola, snow activities or skiing sit at the top of your list.
Ask the property for its exact map pin and compare it with the Gondola base yourself. "Near the Gondola" in a listing can mean very different things.
Tangmarg
Tangmarg works as an alternative base, but know the trade off before you book.
You do not wake up inside Gulmarg. You still drive the final 12 km every morning, and in snow that climb may need chains or a 4x4.
Do not assume Tangmarg costs less, either. Compare live rates for your exact dates before you decide.
Is One Night Enough in Gulmarg?
For normal sightseeing, one night works well. You get the evening, an early Gondola start and a relaxed exit.
Skiers, snow focused travellers and anyone who wants a weather backup day should plan two or more nights. These are our recommendations, not rules.
For ideas beyond the Gondola, read our guide to places to visit in Gulmarg.
Not sure which Monday your Gulmarg night lands on, or whether one night is enough for your group? Send us your dates and we will map it out.
Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Pahalgam?

Pahalgam sits about 96 km from Srinagar airport, according to the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir tourism information.
When people ask us where to stay in Pahalgam, we ask them about pace first. Location matters more here than a hotel's star category.
Pahalgam Town and Market Area
This suits families and first time visitors. Restaurants, shops and simple logistics stay close.
If you travel with kids or older parents, easy access to food and your car beats a fancy view on a remote slope.
Lidder Riverside
Riverside stays along the Lidder appeal to travellers who want the sound and view of the river from their room.
Insider tip: check the exact map position and recent guest photos before you pay extra. Plenty of listings say "river view" without actually facing the river.
Quieter Upper Pahalgam Areas
Couples and slow travellers often prefer the quieter higher areas. You trade quick market access for calm and wider views.
Plan your meals and evening transport before you book, so you do not end up walking around after dark looking for dinner.
Aru Side or More Remote Stays
Stays towards Aru and other remote spots suit trekkers, repeat visitors and people who want deliberate quiet.
We do not suggest them for families on a first trip. Distance from basic conveniences matters more with kids than any view.
What Is Different About Staying in Pahalgam in 2026?

This section matters more than any hotel choice this year.
District Anantnag published a closure notice dated 7 July 2026 covering tourist sites through 31 December 2026. The list includes Baisaran, Chandanwari and Tulian Lake.
The notice names specific sites. It does not close all of Pahalgam, so you can still plan a stay there.
Here is the stop we tell you to skip for now. Do not add extra Pahalgam nights just to visit Baisaran, Chandanwari or Tulian Lake without checking newer official information first.
Warning: older blogs and packaged sightseeing lists may still include these sites. If anyone sells you a trip to them, ask to see an official notice dated after 7 July 2026 before you pay.
For the rest of your Pahalgam plan, our Pahalgam travel guide covers what the valley still offers.
Is Sonamarg Worth Staying Overnight in 2026?

Many older articles say Sonamarg shuts every winter. That no longer tells the full story.
NHIDCL lists the Z-Morh Tunnel project as completed. 2026 reporting quoting the Sonamarg Development Authority says Sonamarg stayed accessible through all 12 months after the tunnel started operating.
Government tourism information puts Sonamarg about 87 km from Srinagar.
Now the honest limit. Year round access to Sonamarg town does not mean Zoji La, trekking routes or every high altitude excursion stays open all year.
When a Sonamarg Day Trip Makes More Sense
A day trip suits short first trips, families who want fewer hotel changes, and anyone whose real priorities are Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
You leave from your Srinagar base, see Sonamarg, and sleep in the same bed that night.
When One Night in Sonamarg Is Worth It
A Sonamarg overnight stay makes sense for photographers and slow travellers who want evening and morning light on the mountains.
It also works if you plan to continue towards Ladakh, but only when current route conditions allow.
Never lock a Ladakh onward plan without a live road check. Our Sonamarg travel guide helps you decide what to do once you get there.
Which Kashmir Base Suits Your Type of Trip?

The best places to stay in Kashmir change with who travels. Here is how we think about it for different groups.
Families With Children
Keep hotel changes low. Pick a convenient Srinagar hotel and a Pahalgam stay in the town or market area.
Add a Gulmarg night only if snow or the Gondola sits high on your family's wish list. Otherwise, a day visit may work fine.
Older Travellers
Choose land hotels with easy road access and keep the number of moves small.
Ask each property directly about stairs, lifts and room location. We do not call any property senior friendly unless we have checked it ourselves.
Couples and Honeymooners
There is no single winner here, because each base has a different mood.
Srinagar gives you the lake experience. Gulmarg gives you the alpine meadow and snow. Pahalgam gives you slow valley time by the river.
Skiers and Snow Focused Travellers
Gulmarg deserves more nights. Skiing and snow days need early starts, and weather can cancel a day without warning.
Two or more nights give you a backup day, so one bad morning does not wipe out your whole reason for coming.
Photographers and Slow Travellers
This is where a Sonamarg night makes the most sense. You get evening light and a quiet morning before the day visitors arrive.
Slow travellers can also stretch Pahalgam to three nights and simply enjoy the river.
What Should You Check Before Booking a Kashmir Hotel in 2026?
Ask about heating and hot water if you travel in colder months. Get a clear answer on how they heat rooms and when hot water runs.
Check the exact map pin, not just the destination name. "Gulmarg", "Pahalgam" and "Dal Lake" in a listing title can cover a wide area.
Read the cancellation terms before you pay. Weather and road changes in the mountains can force date shifts.
If the Gondola drives your trip, cross check the official operating calendar before you fix your Gulmarg night, including the second and fourth Monday rule.
For Pahalgam, check the official attraction restrictions instead of relying on an old sightseeing list from a package or blog.
We do not quote hotel prices in this guide, because rates change with season and demand. Compare live prices for your exact dates.
Season changes everything in Kashmir, so read our guide on the best time to visit Kashmir before you finalise dates.
If safety worries you, our updated article on is Kashmir safe to visit right now explains the current picture.
Common Kashmir Stay Mistakes That Make the Trip Feel Rushed
Trying to sleep in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg on a five night trip tops our list. You pack and unpack nearly every day and never settle anywhere.
Using Srinagar as your only base, when you actually want early mornings in Gulmarg or slow evenings in Pahalgam, comes a close second. You spend those precious hours on the highway instead.
Booking your single Gulmarg night on the second or fourth Monday of the month catches people every season. The Gondola closes for maintenance on those days.
Planning Pahalgam around Baisaran, Chandanwari or Tulian Lake without reading the District Anantnag notice leads to wasted nights. The notice runs through 31 December 2026.
Trusting old articles that say Sonamarg shuts all winter can also mislead you. After Z-Morh, the town stays accessible, though high passes and treks still need a live check.

Turning This Into Your Kashmir Stay Plan
Start with your trip length, then match nights to what you care about most. Srinagar holds the trip together, Gulmarg rewards an overnight, and Pahalgam deserves slow days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where should first time visitors stay in Kashmir?
Split your nights between Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Visit Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar on shorter trips.
How many nights should I stay in Srinagar?
We suggest two nights on a five night trip and three nights in total on a six night trip. Keep one Srinagar night for the end, close to your flight.
What is the best area to stay in Srinagar?
Dal Lake and Boulevard suit first timers who want the lake mood. Central Srinagar and Rajbagh suit people who want easy road access and simpler departures.
Is it better to stay in Gulmarg or visit from Srinagar?
Stay overnight if the Gondola matters, because boarding starts at 8:00 AM. A day trip works if you only want a short look around.
Is one night enough in Gulmarg?
One night suits normal sightseeing. Skiers and snow lovers should plan two or more for a weather backup.
Where should I stay in Gulmarg for the Gondola?
Stay in the main Gulmarg area near the Gondola base. Check the exact map pin rather than trusting "near Gondola" in a listing.
Where is the best area to stay in Pahalgam?
Families do well in the town and market area. Couples often prefer Lidder riverside or quieter upper areas.
How many nights should I stay in Pahalgam?
Two nights make a good starting point for first time visitors. Slow travellers can add a third night.
Is Sonamarg worth staying overnight in 2026?
For photographers, slow travellers and some onward road trips, yes. On short first trips, a day trip from Srinagar usually works better.
Which Kashmir destination is best for families?
Srinagar and Pahalgam town work best, with fewer hotel changes. Add Gulmarg overnight if snow or the Gondola excites your kids.
Can I stay only in Srinagar and do day trips?
Yes, and some families prefer it. You will repeat long drives, and you lose early Gondola access and slow Pahalgam evenings.
What order should I stay in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam?
Start in Srinagar, then do Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and end with a final Srinagar night before your flight. We adjust this order around Gondola Mondays and your dates.
