Sonamarg

Sonamarg is the wildest of Kashmir's big four destinations. If Srinagar is the lake, Gulmarg is the gondola, and Pahalgam is the valleys, Sonamarg is the glacier. The town sits at about 2,740 metres on the Srinagar to Leh Highway, roughly 80 km from Srinagar, in a wide valley where the Sindh River runs fast and clear through meadows backed by snow covered peaks. The name means "Meadow of Gold," and in June, when the wildflowers come out and the afternoon sun hits the grass at the right angle, you understand why.

The main draw is the Thajiwas Glacier, about 3 km from town, reachable by a short walk or a pony ride through pine forest. The glacier holds snow year round, which means you can touch real ice in July while standing in a meadow full of flowers. That contrast is why most families come. The other big attraction is Zero Point, up near the Zoji La pass about 25 km from town, a vast snow expanse at around 3,500 metres. Both require union taxis from the Sonamarg bazaar. Your Srinagar cab cannot take you on either route.

Here is the honest framing. Sonamarg is more raw than the other Kashmir destinations. The town itself is small, with basic accommodation and limited restaurants. The lower section of the Thajiwas Glacier trail has vendor stalls, litter, and pony handlers competing for your business. The magic starts once you walk past that first stretch. The upper glacier area, the Sindh River bank, and the meadow at sunset when the day trippers have left are genuinely special. But if you are expecting the polish of a Gulmarg hotel or the cultural depth of Srinagar, adjust your expectations.

The Z-Morh Tunnel, which opened in early 2025, has changed access significantly. Sonamarg was previously a summer only destination, closed from November to April when snow blocked the road. The 6.5 km tunnel now allows year round vehicle access to the town from Srinagar. Winter visitors can reach Sonamarg, but the glacier trek and Zero Point remain inaccessible in deep winter due to snow.

Most travellers visit Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar. That works, but you lose the evening. The sunset here, when the valley catches the last light and the peaks go from white to gold to pink, is something the day trip crowd never sees. One night changes the experience. If you are camping by the Sindh River, one night is the minimum.
