5 Days Kashmir Itinerary With Sonamarg in Winter 2026 and 2027: Should You Include It?

You have five days and you want snow. Every Kashmir package you open tries to fit Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg into the same short trip.
Now you have to decide whether Sonamarg earns a place, or whether Pahalgam deserves it more.
A 5 days Kashmir itinerary with Sonamarg can work very well in winter. It can also fall apart after one night of heavy snow.
Three things decide which way it goes: the month you travel, how much winter driving your group can handle, and which roads and attractions actually open on your dates.
This guide by Travel Coffee helps you make that call honestly. It also shows you how to book a route that still works when the weather changes your plans.
Quick Answer: Should You Include Sonamarg in a Five-Day Kashmir Winter Trip?
Yes, include Sonamarg if high mountain scenery matters most to you and your operator confirms the road is open.
Stay four nights in Srinagar. Spend one day in Gulmarg, one weather permitting day in Sonamarg and one flexible day in Srinagar.
If you want an easier pace, pick Pahalgam instead.
Five days usually give you only three real sightseeing days.
Is Sonamarg Worth Visiting in Winter When You Have Only Five Days?

When Sonamarg Deserves a Full Day
Sonamarg sits in the Sindh Valley, and the mountains are the reason to go.
Gulmarg feels like a snow resort built around ski slopes and the Gondola. Pahalgam feels like a slow river town where you mostly unwind.
Sonamarg is different. The road follows the valley towards high snowy peaks, and the scenery does most of the work.
That makes it a strong pick for mountain photographers, for couples who care more about dramatic views than activities, and for repeat visitors who have already seen Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
It also suits travellers who stay calm when a plan moves by a day.
The drive is half the experience. You leave Srinagar, pass through Ganderbal and Kangan, and the landscape turns wilder as you climb up the valley.
Just do not confuse reaching Sonamarg town with reaching every spot above it. In winter, the town and the excursions beyond it follow very different rules.
When You Should Skip Sonamarg
Skip it when the forecast looks bad, when traffic police restrict movement on the Kangan to Sonamarg stretch, or when your flights shrink the trip.
An afternoon arrival and a morning departure can leave you with barely three usable days. In that case, Sonamarg is the easiest day to drop.
Skip it if someone in your group hates long winter drives. A full day in a cold vehicle with slow traffic and few stops tires people out quickly.
For young children and older travellers, the real question is comfort, not age. Ask whether they can sit in a car for several hours, walk on icy ground and stay cheerful through a long cold day.
Some families love the day out. Others would happily trade it for a slow afternoon in Gulmarg or a night beside the river in Pahalgam.
If you are still choosing your snow spots, our guide to the best places to visit in Kashmir in winter explains what each place does well in the cold months.
Is Sonamarg Open in Winter 2026 and 2027?

What Changed After the Z-Morh Tunnel Opened?
The Sonamarg Tunnel, which many people still call the Z-Morh tunnel, opened on 13 January 2025. Its main tunnel runs for about 6.4 km.
The tunnel improved all weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg. It is the main reason a Sonamarg winter itinerary is now realistic at all.
Do not mix it up with the Zoji La Tunnel. That is a separate project, and an October 2026 government infrastructure update still described it as under construction.
So the Sonamarg Tunnel helps you reach Sonamarg. It does not open the road to Ladakh for the winter, and it does not promise you can drive beyond Sonamarg town.
Are Thajiwas Glacier and Zero Point Accessible?
This is what most tourists get wrong. They hear “Sonamarg is open” and assume Thajiwas Glacier, Zero Point and the Zoji La area are all available too.
They are not, at least not automatically.
Thajiwas is Sonamarg’s best known excursion, and District Ganderbal’s tourism page mentions pony rides to the glacier.
After a security review, an official order on 16 February 2026 included Thajiwas Glacier in a list of tourist spots to reopen.
That order tells you the authorities reopened it. It does not tell you the trail, ponies or local transport will run in December 2026, January 2027 or February 2027.
Zero Point and Zoji La sit higher still. We cannot give you a winter opening date for them, and nobody can honestly promise one.
What If the Road Closes After Snowfall?
Fresh snow, ice, slow road clearing and police restrictions can all stop or slow your Sonamarg day.
On 26 January 2026, a Kashmir Traffic Police advisory required appropriate anti-skid arrangements on snowbound routes, including Kangan to Sonamarg and Tangmarg to Gulmarg.
That advisory had a date on it. Rules can differ the next time snow falls, so check the latest one for your travel dates.
Here is an insider tip most generic guides miss: Never lock Sonamarg to one fixed date. Keep it interchangeable with your free Srinagar day.
If snow shuts the road on Day 3, you swap the two days. You still get the excursion, just a day later.
The tunnel gives you better infrastructure. It does not give you an unconditional guarantee. Plan around that difference and your trip survives the weather.
Sonamarg or Pahalgam in Five Days: Which Should You Choose?

Most travellers end up choosing between Sonamarg or Pahalgam in 5 days, because fitting both in comfortably is hard. Here is how we help couples and families decide.
Choose Sonamarg for Mountain Scenery
Pick Sonamarg if you want one focused scenic excursion and big snowy mountains in your photos.
Sonamarg fits neatly as a day trip from Srinagar. You keep the same hotel, skip packing and unpacking in the cold, and come back to a warm room at night.
In a short winter plan, that matters more than people expect. A Sonamarg overnight adds a hotel change and depends on winter operations you may not be able to confirm.
Choose Pahalgam for a Slower Winter Escape
Pahalgam suits people who want to slow down. The Lidder River, the forests and quiet evenings are the point, not a checklist of stops.
For couples and families who want rest more than sightseeing, we recommend a night in Pahalgam instead of a rushed same day visit. You get an evening and a morning there, not just a few hours.
How Do the 2026 Pahalgam Closures Change the Comparison?
Here is the honest warning. A District Anantnag notice dated 7 July 2026 lists Baisaran, Chandanwari and Tulian Lake among closed tourist destinations.
Plenty of packages still use these spots as highlights. If a package sells you Pahalgam on the strength of Baisaran or Chandanwari, ask exactly what you will see instead.
The notice shows an end date of 31 December 2026. That date does not prove these places reopen on 1 January 2027.
Check for a newer order before you book a January or February Pahalgam trip.
The notice does not close Pahalgam town. You can still enjoy the river and the town itself. The closures simply tilt the decision towards Sonamarg for travellers who want scenery more than a slow stay.

What Is the Best 5 Days Kashmir Itinerary With Sonamarg?

This is the 5 days Kashmir itinerary with Sonamarg we suggest to most winter travellers. It is a simple Srinagar Gulmarg Sonamarg itinerary with four nights in Srinagar and flights through Srinagar Airport.
The logic is one base, two excursions and one buffer day. That structure works for a Kashmir winter itinerary of 5 days and 4 nights because nothing depends on a single perfect day.
Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar and Enjoy Dal Lake
Your driver meets you at the airport and takes you to the hotel. Check in, have a warm lunch and rest.
If you land early and boats are running, take a short shikara ride on Dal Lake before it gets dark. If you land late, skip it. You have three more evenings.
Do not stack gardens and markets onto this day. After a flight and the first blast of cold, a slow evening sets you up for the two long days ahead.
Overnight in Srinagar.
Day 2: Visit Gulmarg for Snow and the Gondola
Gulmarg sits about 54 to 60 km from Srinagar, depending on the route. In normal conditions the drive takes around 1.5 to 2 hours via Tangmarg. Snow and restrictions can stretch that a lot.
Make the Gulmarg Gondola your main plan for the day, if it is running. After that, give yourself time to enjoy the snow instead of chasing five activities.
Here is a timing tip that changes the whole trip: The Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation closes the Gondola on the second and fourth Monday of every month for preventive maintenance.
Check your calendar before you fix the Gulmarg day. Landing on a maintenance Monday is the easiest mistake to avoid.
The official operator lets you book online up to 120 days in advance. Booking direct on the official portal is our best money saving tip, because you pay the official fare instead of a reseller’s price.
A scam warning: third party sites show Gondola prices that do not match each other. Pay only on the official Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation portal. We are not printing a fare here because published sources disagree.
Ask your driver to confirm anti skid arrangements for the climb from Tangmarg on snowy days.
Return to Srinagar for the night. If weather or your Gondola booking needs a different date, swap this day with Day 4.
Day 3: Take a Sonamarg Day Trip if the Road Is Open
Sonamarg sits about 87 km from Srinagar. District Ganderbal describes the ordinary journey as under three hours. In winter, expect it to take longer.
Leave right after breakfast. The road runs through Ganderbal and Kangan before it climbs into the Sindh Valley, and an early start leaves you daylight for the drive back.
For a warm break, stop for a cup of kahwa at a roadside dhaba in Kangan on the way up. Hot kahwa on a cold mountain road is one of those small moments people talk about later.
At Sonamarg, the mountain views and the valley are the main events. Walk around, take photos and do not rush.
District Ganderbal notes restrictions on private vehicles in parts of the sightseeing area, where you hire local transport instead. Your Srinagar cab may not go everywhere.
Add Thajiwas Glacier only when local authorities confirm safe access and permissions on that day.
Skip any prepaid Zero Point or Zoji La excursion. Do not spend that money until someone confirms, on the day, that the road beyond town is open.
Return to Srinagar for the night.
Day 4: Keep a Flexible Srinagar Sightseeing Day
This is your buffer day, and it is the most important day in the plan.
If Day 2 and Day 3 went well, take it slow. Walk through local markets, sit by Dal Lake, visit any gardens open to visitors, or simply rest.
If snow blocked Sonamarg on Day 3, try it today. If Gulmarg failed on Day 2, move it here.
If Sonamarg stays closed, do not turn this day into a rushed attempt on another snowbound road just to “use” it. A calm Srinagar day beats a risky drive every time.
Overnight in Srinagar.
Day 5: Depart from Srinagar Airport
Your flight time and the road conditions decide how much you see today.
With an evening flight, you can fit in a short Srinagar stop. With a morning flight, go straight to the airport.
Leave plenty of time for the airport transfer and the security checks. Never add a distant excursion before an early flight, because one slow road can cost you the flight.
Want This Plan Built Around Your Flights?
In our experience, the best five day winter trips start with real flight times, not guesses. A 2 PM landing and a 10 AM departure create a very different trip from early arrivals and late exits.
Can You Cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam in Five Days?

Technically, yes. A fast plan gives Day 1 to Srinagar, Day 2 to Gulmarg, Day 3 to Sonamarg, Day 4 to Pahalgam and Day 5 to departure.
We do not recommend it for most winter travellers.
That plan stacks three long excursions back to back. You spend most daylight hours in a car, and one snowy day leaves you nowhere to move a missed excursion.
Remember the maths. Four destinations in five calendar days is not five full sightseeing days, because arrival and departure eat into both ends.
District Anantnag places Pahalgam about 96 km from Srinagar Airport. That figure starts at the airport, not the city centre, but either way a same day return adds a lot of driving.
Skip the same day Pahalgam add on. It gives you hours on the road and very little time beside the river.
What we tell our travellers is simple: if all four places are non negotiable, add at least one more day. Our Kashmir 6-day itinerary shows how one extra night makes room for Sonamarg when the season, roads and flights allow.
What Is the Best Five-Day Alternative Without Sonamarg?

If Sonamarg does not make your list, this classic plan works well for first time visitors.
Day 1 is your Srinagar arrival and an easy evening by Dal Lake. On Day 2, you take a Gulmarg day trip and return to Srinagar.
Day 3 takes you from Srinagar to Pahalgam, where you stay the night. Day 4 gives you a relaxed morning or some accessible local sightseeing before the drive back to Srinagar.
Day 5 is your airport departure.
The Pahalgam overnight is what makes this plan feel good. Instead of arriving, rushing and leaving, you get a slow evening and a quiet morning by the Lidder.
Sightseeing still depends on the weather and on the closures in the July 2026 Anantnag notice. Ask your operator what you can actually visit before you book.
We recommend this route to first time visitors who want a balanced holiday more than maximum destination coverage. Our own complete Kashmir 5-day itinerary follows this pattern and leaves out Sonamarg on purpose to keep the pace manageable.
Should You Visit Sonamarg in December, January or February?

Gulmarg and Sonamarg can both get heavy winter snow. Nobody can promise snowfall on your exact travel dates, so plan for the mountains, not for a guaranteed snowstorm.
December 2026
Sonamarg in December 2026 marks the start of winter. You might see fresh snow on the ground, or you might see snow mainly on the high peaks.
You get the mountain landscape either way. Fresh snowfall is the part you cannot count on.
Confirm road access and your hotel details before you commit, especially if you plan anything beyond a Srinagar day trip.
January 2027
Sonamarg in January 2027 can look its most wintry. It can also bring icy roads, snowstorms and traffic restrictions that change from one day to the next.
We cannot know January 2027 road conditions in advance, and you should be wary of anyone who claims to. Check the latest advisory a day before and again on the morning of your trip.
February 2027
February appeals to travellers who still want a proper winter mountain experience. The same road checks apply.
Do not assume February is automatically safer or more open than January. The weather decides that, not the calendar.
Across all three months, book Sonamarg as a flexible, weather dependent excursion. That one decision protects your whole trip.
Where Should You Stay: Srinagar, Gulmarg or Sonamarg?
For most five day winter trips, we suggest four nights in Srinagar. You unpack once, your driver knows the routine, and swapping excursion days becomes easy.
Families especially like this setup. Fewer hotel changes mean less packing in the cold and fewer late check ins after long drives.
A split between Srinagar and Gulmarg makes sense for skiing enthusiasts or for travellers whose main goal is the Gondola. Staying up in Gulmarg gives you more time on the snow without the daily drive.
The trade off is that you lose some flexibility. If Gulmarg weather turns bad on your night there, your options shrink.
Consider a Sonamarg overnight only after you confirm winter operations, room heating, road access and your return arrangements. We are not recommending a specific Sonamarg hotel here, because winter availability changes.

How Much Does a Private Five-Day Kashmir Winter Tour With Sonamarg Cost?

There is no honest single price for a private 4 nights 5 days Kashmir winter package. Your travel dates, group size, hotel category, meal plan and vehicle type all change the number.
What Your Quote Should Cover
Accommodation is usually the biggest part. Four nights in Srinagar will cost differently depending on whether you choose a houseboat, a standard hotel or a premium property.
A Kashmir winter package with a private driver covers the car and the driver for all five days, including both airport transfers.
Meals depend on the package terms. Some include breakfast only, others include breakfast and dinner.
Applicable taxes should appear clearly in the quotation, so you know whether the price you see is the price you pay.
What Usually Costs Extra
Gondola tickets, shikara rides, local union transport, optional pony rides and snow activities often sit outside the package price.
Published Gondola fares and Sonamarg taxi rates differ from source to source. Your operator should check current pricing before finalising your quote.
Winter anti skid arrangements can also affect transport planning, because the vehicle and driver need to be ready for snowbound stretches.
If you are working out a Kashmir winter trip cost for a couple, ask for the extras listed separately. That is the only way to compare two quotes fairly.

What Should a Private Winter Kashmir Itinerary Include Before You Book?

A good private itinerary names your hotel, or at least the hotel category, for each night. It also shows exactly where you sleep on each date.
It should state the vehicle category and give a day by day sightseeing plan, not just a list of destinations.
Ask for written confirmation of what the package includes and excludes. Driver allowance, tolls and parking should appear clearly where they apply.
Gondola tickets, local union taxis and any winter transport arrangements need a clear mention. If the itinerary says “Gulmarg sightseeing” without explaining the Gondola, ask.
Most importantly, ask what happens if Sonamarg closes. Find out whether unused services become refundable, reschedulable or replaceable with something else.
In our experience, a five day winter tour fails more often because of a badly designed itinerary than because of a bad hotel or car. A written backup plan is worth more than a promise to cover every famous name on the map.
What Should You Do If Sonamarg Is Closed During Your Trip?

First, check whether you can safely move Sonamarg to another day. This is exactly why the flexible Srinagar day exists.
Second, if no safe excursion is possible, enjoy extra Srinagar sightseeing or take a slower day. Rest is not a wasted day on a winter holiday.
Third, consider Gulmarg or Pahalgam only when the roads, operating conditions, your remaining time and the booking arrangements all make sense.
A backup excursion may cost differently from the original plan. Agree to any change with your operator before you set off, not halfway up a snowy road.
Flexibility is the whole game in a Kashmir winter. Forcing a dangerous drive to tick a box helps nobody.

Sonamarg can absolutely replace Pahalgam in a short winter trip, especially if dramatic mountains matter more to you than a slow valley stay.
Just do not force it in. When your flights, the weather or your group’s comfort make the day too rushed or too uncertain, the smarter 5 days Kashmir itinerary with Sonamarg is the one that lets you drop it without regret.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sonamarg worth including in a five-day Kashmir winter itinerary?
Yes, if dramatic mountain scenery matters more to you than activities or a slow stay. Keep it as a day trip from Srinagar and leave a free day next to it, so you can move the excursion if snow or restrictions close the road.
Is Sonamarg open in December 2026 and January 2027?
The Sonamarg Tunnel, open since 13 January 2025, improved all weather access from Srinagar. Your exact dates still depend on snow, road clearing and traffic restrictions, so check the latest advisory a day before and on the morning you travel.
Can I cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg in five days?
You can, but only as a rushed plan. Three excursions in a row leave no weather buffer and a lot of driving. If all four places matter to you, add at least one more day to the trip.
Should I skip Pahalgam to visit Sonamarg in winter?
Choose Sonamarg for big snowy mountain views on a day trip. Choose Pahalgam for a slower river and forest stay overnight. The July 2026 closure notice for Baisaran, Chandanwari and Tulian Lake also affects Pahalgam’s sightseeing.
How far is Sonamarg from Srinagar, and how long is the drive?
Sonamarg sits about 87 km from Srinagar. District Ganderbal describes the ordinary drive as under three hours. In winter, snow, ice and traffic restrictions can make it much longer, so leave early and plan to return in daylight.
Can I visit Thajiwas Glacier in winter?
An official order on 16 February 2026 included Thajiwas Glacier among the tourist spots to reopen. That does not confirm winter trail access. Check trail safety, permissions and pony or local transport availability on the day you visit.
Is Zero Point open in December or January?
Do not assume it is. Zero Point sits above Sonamarg town, and the Sonamarg Tunnel does not guarantee access beyond the town. Confirm access on the day before you pay for any excursion there.
Do I need a 4x4 vehicle or snow chains for Sonamarg?
Not on every road, every day. Winter advisories, like the Kashmir Traffic Police advisory of 26 January 2026, can require appropriate anti-skid arrangements on snowbound routes such as Kangan to Sonamarg. Follow the latest advisory for your dates.
Is it better to stay in Sonamarg or take a day trip from Srinagar?
For a five day trip, a Srinagar base is simpler. You avoid a hotel change and keep your day flexible. Consider a Sonamarg night only after you confirm winter operations, room heating, road access and your return plan.
Which is better for snow, Gulmarg or Sonamarg?
Gulmarg has the Gondola and an established ski and snow activity setup. Sonamarg wins on dramatic mountain scenery. Both can get heavy winter snow, but nobody can promise snowfall on your specific travel dates.
What happens to my booking if the Sonamarg road closes?
That depends on your written package terms. Rescheduling, replacement sightseeing, price changes and refunds vary by operator and local arrangement. Ask for the Sonamarg backup plan in writing before you pay.
How much does a private five-day Kashmir winter trip cost?
There is no single price. Your quote depends on dates, group size, hotel category, meal plan, vehicle type and extras like Gondola tickets or local union transport. Share your dates and priorities with our team for a customised quotation.
