Winter Spiti from Pune in 2026-27: Flying from Pune vs Mumbai and Planning Your Leave

Most people who plan winter Spiti from Pune start in the wrong place. They grab a cheap flight first and think about leave and roads later.
Flip that order. In winter, the road decides your dates, your leave decides your flight, and the airport comes last.
We run trips out of Shimla, and every winter Pune travellers ask us the same two questions. This guide by Travel Coffee answers both.
Quick Answer: How Do You Plan Winter Spiti from Pune?
In winter, you can only enter Spiti from the Shimla side via Kinnaur. Snow shuts Kunzum Pass, so the Manali route stays closed.
Fly from Pune or Mumbai to Chandigarh, drive to Shimla, then go up through Kinnaur to Kaza.
Plan 10 to 12 days of leave door to door, including one buffer day.
Fly from Pune if a direct or one-stop fare fits your dates. Fly from Mumbai only if the saving beats the cab cost and the extra half day.
What Most Pune Travellers Get Wrong About Winter Spiti
The biggest mistake we see is a winter plan that loops through Manali or includes Chandratal.
That plan cannot work. Chandratal stays inaccessible from November to April. Snow buries Kunzum Pass, nobody maintains the road, and no camps run.
You enter from Shimla and you exit from Shimla. Your route goes in and comes back the same way.
That one fact changes your leave math. You drive the long road twice, so you need more days than a summer circuit.
If you want to understand why the lake closes and when it opens again, read our Chandratal opening dates and season guide.
Flying from Pune vs Mumbai for Winter Spiti

Both cities work. The right choice depends on your fare, your flight time, and how much you value half a day.
When Flying from Pune Makes Sense
Pune airport saves you the drive to Mumbai. You leave home, reach the airport, and fly.
The catch is choice. Pune usually has fewer direct options to Chandigarh than Mumbai does.
If you find a direct or one-stop Pune flight that lands before noon, take it. It almost always beats the Mumbai detour on time.
When Flying from Mumbai Makes Sense
Mumbai gives you more flights, more timings, and sometimes lower fares.
But the Pune to Mumbai airport transfer adds extra travel time and cost, depending on your pickup location, traffic conditions and cab choice.
Factor in the round-trip transfer expense and allow enough buffer for traffic before deciding whether flying from Mumbai actually saves you money.
The Money Tip Most Pune Travellers Miss
Do the full maths before you book Mumbai. Add the cab fare both ways to the flight fare.
We have seen Pune travellers save ₹1,500 on a Mumbai fare and then spend more than that on cabs. For a group of four, Pune often wins once you split nothing but the airport drop.
Chandigarh or Delhi as Your Landing City?
Chandigarh puts you closest to Shimla by road. Delhi gives you more flights but adds a long drive.
Winter fog can delay morning flights into North India. Pick a flight with some margin, not the last connection of the day.
Whether you fly from Pune or travel to Mumbai for a better connection, our Spiti Valley tour packages from Pune can help you explore suitable itineraries and understand your onward journey into Spiti.
Why Your Landing Time Matters More Than Your Fare
Here is the timing tip that changes the whole first day. Land before noon.
We tell every traveller to drive on mountain roads in daylight only. Winter days end early, and the Chandigarh to Shimla drive typically takes around 3 to 5 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and weather.
Allow extra time during winter, especially if fog, snowfall or congestion slows the journey.
A noon landing gets you into Shimla before dark. An evening landing means a night drive or a wasted hotel night in Chandigarh.
Then leave Shimla early the next morning. An early start gives you the full daylight window for the climb into Kinnaur.
How Many Days of Leave Do You Need for Winter Spiti from Pune?

This is the question that matters most. Our honest answer is 10 to 12 days, door to door.
Here is how those days add up, in plain terms.
The Going-Up Half
Day 1 is your flight to Chandigarh and the drive to Shimla. Day 2 takes you from Shimla to Narkanda or Rampur, a gentle start.
Day 3 takes you to Kalpa. Day 4 goes on to Tabo, with Nako on the way. Day 5 brings you to Kaza at about 12,500 feet.
The Coming-Down Half
Day 6 gives you Kaza and nearby villages, if roads allow. Then you retrace the route through Tabo, Kalpa, and Rampur over three days.
You reach Shimla around Day 9 and fly home on Day 10. Add one or two buffer days, and you land at 11 or 12.
Where to Put Your Buffer Day
Put your buffer day before your return flight, not after. This is our strongest piece of advice.
A landslide or fresh snow can block the Kinnaur road for a day. If your buffer sits at the end, you reach Chandigarh calm instead of rebooking a missed flight.
How to Stretch Your Leave Further
Wrap your trip around a public holiday or a weekend on both ends. Two weekends plus five or six leave days can cover the full trip.
Christmas and the 26 January holiday are popular for this. Book flights early for those weeks because fares jump fast.

The Winter Route Through Kinnaur, Explained Simply

The Shimla to Kaza road climbs slowly through the Sutlej valley. It does not depend on any high pass, which is why it works in winter.
That slow climb also helps your body. You pass through Narkanda, Kalpa, Nako, and Tabo before Kaza, so you adjust gradually.
The road is not perfect. Landslides can hit the Kinnaur stretch, and rough patches appear without warning.
We drive this road every season. On the worst days, a single blocked stretch has held our vehicles for hours.
If you want to spend more time in the lower valley, our Kinnaur trips cover Kalpa and Sangla at a slower pace.
What We Tell Our Travellers About Kalpa
We tell almost every Pune traveller the same thing. Do not rush past Kalpa.
Coming from Pune, you start near sea level. Kalpa gives your body a proper night at mid altitude before Tabo and Kaza.
Travellers who push straight to Kaza feel it at night. Headaches and poor sleep ruin the next day, and sometimes the whole trip.
Altitude and Safety: The Warning Pune Travellers Need
Kaza sits at about 12,500 feet. You fly in from Pune, so your body has had zero time at height.
Do not plan to reach Kaza in two days from the plains. That jump causes altitude sickness, even in fit, young travellers.
Drink more water than you think you need. Skip alcohol and heavy meals on the way up.
If someone in your group gets confused, vomits again and again, or struggles to breathe, descend immediately. Do not wait it out.
The Scam Warning: Winter Packages with Chandratal

Every winter, someone sells a package that promises Chandratal or a Manali exit. Walk away from it.
Chandratal stays shut from November to April. Kunzum Pass sits at about 15,060 feet under deep snow. No one can legally or safely take you there.
If an operator insists, ask them which road they plan to use. A real local operator will tell you straight.
The Stop You Should Skip in Winter
Skip any plans to see Kunzum Pass or Chandratal in winter. Not "try and see." Skip it.
Save those for a summer trip. Our Spiti Valley in March guide shows what late winter realistically gives you instead.
Where to Get Your Chai in Kaza

After the long drive, head to the small dhabas around Kaza's main market. A hot cup of chai and a plate of thukpa there beats any hotel menu.
In winter, many places shut for the season. Ask your homestay which dhaba still runs that week.
Insider Tips Generic Guides Miss
Carry enough cash for the whole trip from Shimla. ATMs in Spiti are scarce and unreliable, and many stays and dhabas do not take UPI.
Get a BSNL SIM before you leave Shimla. Most networks die in Spiti. BSNL gives you the best chance of a signal, though it stays patchy.
Keep your fuel tank above half at every chance. Pumps are few, and winter stops leave you no margin.
Download offline maps before Rampur. Live GPS fails right when you need it.
Should You Self-Drive or Book a Vehicle?
We do not recommend self-driving in winter if you are a first-time mountain driver. Snow, ice, and blocked stretches need local experience.
Hire an experienced driver with a high-clearance vehicle, or join a group. Our group tours split one vehicle across several travellers, which cuts your per-head cost.
If you want a fixed plan with stays and permits handled, check our Winter Spiti tour packages. We build every winter plan around buffer days.
What to Pack When You Fly from Pune
Pune winters are mild, so most travellers pack too light. Spiti in winter drops far below freezing.
Pack thermals, a heavy down jacket, a windproof outer, gloves, a warm cap, and two extra pairs of warm socks. Add sunscreen and UV sunglasses, because the sun at altitude burns fast.
Check your airline's baggage limit before you buy winter gear. Bulky jackets eat your allowance, so wear the heaviest one on the plane.

No. Snow shuts Kunzum Pass in winter, so you can only enter and exit Spiti from the Shimla side.

Fly from Pune if you find a direct or one-stop flight that lands before noon. Choose Mumbai only if the fare saving beats the cab cost and extra time.

How many days of leave do I need for winter Spiti from Pune?

Is winter Spiti safe for first-timers?
Yes, with an experienced driver, a slow climb, and buffer days. Self-driving in winter is risky for first-time mountain drivers.
How high is Kaza?

Do I need to carry cash?
Yes. ATMs are scarce and many stays and dhabas do not take UPI, so carry cash from Shimla.

Land before noon. That lets you reach Shimla in daylight and start the mountain drive fresh the next morning.
