- Meals
- 5 breakfasts (Day 3 to Day 7) and 5 dinners (Day 2 to Day 6), 10 meals in total on the MAP plan

- Best Season
- Published winter departures, subject to road clearance and confirmed winter accommodation. Friday evening departures on published dates
- Ideal For
- Travellers who are comfortable with long drives, basic winter facilities, high altitude, and changes to the plan. This is shorter in duration, not easier in terms of altitude
Know Before You Go
- This is a fixed departure group expedition, not a private trip. The Volvo, the mountain 4x4 vehicles, and the accommodation are all shared as per your booking. A private vehicle is not included. Departures are small, up to 10 travellers, spread across the required vehicles
- On the morning you reach Shimla, the freshen up after the overnight Volvo is quick and in a common area, usually at the breakfast stop. There is no dedicated room, hotel, or shower for this, and it is often time bound. Dedicated showers can be arranged at an extra cost if you ask in advance. Breakfast in Shimla is at your own expense
- About the 4x4. The mountain vehicle may be a Jimny, a Scorpio N 4WD, or another confirmed 4x4, chosen by the group and luggage, and the model and seating are shared before departure. Please note a Jimny has four seats in total, including the driver and any accompanying staff, so it is not four guest seats plus a driver. This matters when you picture space and luggage
- Nako is an early high altitude overnight stay, and this is the most important thing to understand about this trip. Nako sits at about 3,660 metres, and the plan reaches it after just one night in Sangla, without an extra Kalpa or Tabo night on the way up. Share any past altitude problems and relevant medical conditions before you book. If you need a slower climb, please choose a different itinerary
- Tell the coordinator at once about any headache, nausea, or unusual tiredness, and do not keep climbing with altitude symptoms that have not settled. Worsening symptoms, breathlessness at rest, confusion, or trouble walking need urgent medical help and a descent when it is safe to move. There is no hospital at Nako, so we take these signs seriously
- Chitkul is a planned stop on Day 3, reached via Rakcham, with time to enjoy the snow. In winter, heavy snowfall can block the last stretch beyond Rakcham. If that happens, the team covers the best safely accessible part of the Baspa valley instead. Either way this is a long day, so the priority stays on reaching Nako safely in daylight rather than driving after dark
- One Kaza day does not mean every village. Key, Kibber, and Chicham are the preferred outing, and Langza, Hikkim, and Komic are considered separately when access and the group's health allow. The team picks the practical circuit for the day rather than promising all six places. Reaching a village does not mean every building, monastery, or post office will be open
- There are long transfers and no spare day. Shimla to Sangla, Kaza to Kalpa, and Kalpa to Shimla all take a long time, so do not expect a fixed 10 in the morning start followed by a short drive. The team checks conditions before setting out, and a later safe start may mean a shorter route or an extra overnight halt, rather than driving into the dark to keep the original plan
- Facilities are simpler in winter, so please do not expect a premium hotel feel throughout. Hot water may come in buckets, and some properties use traditional dry toilets. Heating, washroom access, and any extra charges are confirmed for your actual stays before payment. Triple sharing may include an extra bed or mattress rather than three separate beds, and electricity and mobile service can be interrupted
- For safety, use only the heating the property provides. Never bring an outdoor gas stove, a charcoal burner, or a camping heater into a room, as this can be deadly in a closed space
- This trip goes in and comes back through the Kinnaur approach. Chandratal, Kunzum Pass, and a Manali crossing are not part of a winter expedition, because the Kunzum route is closed by snow in winter. The Shimla approach is described as almost all weather, but it is not free from closures. The road can be single lane and rough in parts, so keep some patience
- As a careful plan, keep three to four extra days free after the scheduled return. This does not promise that a closure will clear within that time, but it protects you if the mountains slow the journey. For the same reason, do not book a tight flight or train right after the return
- Snow and frozen water are not guaranteed. Snowfall and snow cover depend on your dates and the recent weather, so we do not promise white landscapes at every stop. Nako Lake is viewed from safe ground when it is accessible. Walking, skating, or driving on frozen lakes and rivers is not included, as it is dangerous
- Pack for real winter. Bring thermals, an insulated jacket, gloves, a warm cap, suitable footwear, sunglasses, personal medicines, and a power bank. Use compact luggage, keep essential medicines with you, and carry enough cash, since ATMs, cards, and mobile payments can be unreliable in the valley
- Foreign nationals must contact the team before booking. The Kinnaur to Spiti stretch is a sensitive border belt, and foreign travellers need an Inner Line Permit for it, so eligibility and processing must be sorted in advance rather than left for the journey. Indian travellers do not need a permit for this route
- The oxygen cylinder is carried for emergencies and you pay only if you use it. It does not replace a doctor, and it does not make it safe to keep climbing when someone is unwell. The usage charge is shared with you before booking. Carry a valid government photo ID for every traveller
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the nine day expedition?
This eight day version stays in Nako on the way up, then continues through Tabo to Kaza. The nine day expedition instead adds separate overnight stays in Kalpa and Tabo before Kaza, which is a gentler climb. Both give you two Kaza nights and one full sightseeing day. If you want a slower ascent, the nine day trip suits better.
Is this a private trip?
No. This is a fixed departure group expedition. The Volvo, the mountain 4x4 vehicles, and the accommodation are shared as per your booking. A private vehicle is not included. Departures are small, up to 10 travellers, spread across the required vehicles.
Which 4x4 will we travel in?
The vehicle may be a Jimny, a Scorpio N 4WD, or another confirmed 4x4, and the model and seating are shared before departure. Please note a Jimny has four seats in total, including the driver and any accompanying staff, so it is not four guest seats plus a driver. This is worth knowing when you picture space and luggage.
Is this suitable for first time visitors?
Not automatically. The early Nako overnight, the cold, and the long transfers need thought even though there is no trekking. Nako is high, at about 3,660 metres, and the plan reaches it after just one night in Sangla. Please discuss your health and any past altitude experience with the team. A slower itinerary may suit you better.
How high is Nako and why does it matter?
Nako is at about 3,660 metres, and this trip reaches it after only one night in Sangla, without an extra Kalpa or Tabo night on the way up. That is a real altitude jump. Tell the coordinator at once about any headache, nausea, or unusual tiredness, do not keep climbing with symptoms that have not settled, and be ready to descend if they worsen. There is no hospital at Nako, so we take this seriously.
What happens if Nako is unavailable or someone feels unwell?
The team may need to change the overnight halt, stop the ascent, or arrange medical help. This can change the trip duration. Another stay is not automatically an easy substitute within the same eight day schedule, so please keep some buffer days and travel insurance.
Is Chitkul included in the price?
Yes. Chitkul is a planned stop on Day 3, reached via Rakcham, with time to enjoy the snow. In winter, heavy snow can sometimes block the last stretch beyond Rakcham. If that happens, the team covers the best safely accessible part of the Baspa valley instead, and always keeps the priority on reaching Nako safely in daylight.
Can we freshen up after the overnight Volvo in Shimla?
Yes, but it is a quick freshen up in a common area, usually at the breakfast stop. There is no dedicated room, hotel, or shower included, and it is often time bound. If you want a dedicated shower or room, we can try to arrange it at an extra cost, so please tell us in advance.
Are Gue, Pin Valley, and Dhankar included?
No. Gue and Pin Valley are not part of this winter product. Dhankar is also left out of this shorter itinerary, to keep the Nako to Kaza day focused on Tabo and the onward drive. These are itinerary choices for a shorter winter trip, not claims that the places stay closed all winter.
Does one Kaza day cover every village?
No. Key, Kibber, and Chicham are the preferred outing, and Langza, Hikkim, and Komic are considered separately when access and the group's health allow. The team picks the practical circuit for the day rather than promising all six places. Reaching a village also does not mean every monastery, building, or post office will be open.
What happens if a road closes?
The team decides whether to wait, change the halt, or turn back. A shortened sightseeing day may become a rest day. Any extra stays, meals, and transport are charged as per the written booking terms, and the scheduled return is not guaranteed. This is why we ask you to keep three to four extra days free after the return.
What are the winter facilities like?
Simpler than a city hotel, on purpose. Hot water may come in buckets, some properties use traditional dry toilets, and heating, washroom access, and any extra charges are confirmed for your actual stays before payment. Triple sharing may use an extra bed or mattress, and electricity and mobile service can be interrupted. Please never bring an outdoor gas stove, charcoal burner, or camping heater into a room.
Are room heaters included?
Only where the booked property includes them in its tariff. Separately billed heaters are extra. We share the heating arrangement for your confirmed stays before payment rather than promise the same facilities everywhere.
Is emergency oxygen included?
A cylinder is carried with the group, but use is charged separately under the package policy, and the charge is shared before booking. Oxygen does not replace medical care, and it does not make it safe to keep climbing when someone is unwell.
Is snowfall guaranteed?
No. Snowfall and snow cover depend on your dates and the recent weather, so we do not promise white landscapes at every stop. Nako Lake is viewed from safe ground when it is accessible, and walking, skating, or driving on frozen lakes and rivers is not included, since it is dangerous.
Does the trip go via Manali or Chandratal?
No. This trip enters and returns through the Kinnaur approach only. Chandratal, Kunzum Pass, and a Manali crossing are not part of a winter expedition, because the Kunzum route is closed by snow in winter. The Shimla approach is almost all weather but not free from closures.
Can solo travellers join?
Yes. Solo travellers can join a shared departure. Room pairing and any single room supplement are confirmed before payment. The starting price of Rs 25,999 is for triple sharing on the Delhi to Delhi option, and double sharing is available at an extra Rs 3,000.
Do foreign nationals need extra arrangements?
Yes. Foreign travellers must contact the team before booking, because the Kinnaur to Spiti stretch is a sensitive border belt and needs an Inner Line Permit for foreign nationals. Eligibility and processing must be checked in advance rather than left until the journey begins. Indian travellers do not need a permit for this route.
What should we pack?
Pack for real winter: thermals, an insulated jacket, gloves, a warm cap, suitable footwear, sunglasses, personal medicines, and a power bank. Use compact luggage, keep essential medicines with you, and carry enough cash, since ATMs, cards, and mobile payments can be unreliable in the valley. Also carry a valid government photo ID for every traveller.
Can the package price change?
The starting price of Rs 25,999 per person is for triple sharing on the Delhi to Delhi option, with GST included. Starting from Chandigarh saves Rs 2,000 and from Shimla saves Rs 3,000, and double sharing adds Rs 3,000. The final price depends on your start point and sharing choice, and is confirmed before payment.
