Is Sissu Open Today? Atal Tunnel Road Status, Live Snowfall & Tourist Entry Updates (2026-27)

If you are planning a trip to Sissu, one of the first things you should check is whether the road through the Atal Tunnel is open for tourist vehicles.
The journey from Manali to Sissu may look straightforward on the map, but winter weather can change road conditions quite quickly. Fresh snowfall, black ice and traffic restrictions can affect tourist movement even when the tunnel itself is operational.
Another thing worth understanding is that an open Atal Tunnel does not automatically mean Sissu is open for sightseeing. The road beyond the tunnel, local entry permissions and weather conditions all play a role in deciding whether tourists can reach the village.
This guide by Travel Coffee will explain how to check the latest Sissu road status, Atal Tunnel access, snowfall updates and tourist entry restrictions for 2026 to 27, so you can make a more informed decision before starting your journey.
Quick Answer: Is Sissu Open Today?
If you are asking ’is Sissu open today’, the short answer is yes, the road looks open. The official Lahaul and Spiti district road status page lists Manali to Keylong as OPEN.
A separate route tracker dated 31 October lists Gramphoo to Sissu via Atal Tunnel, Sissu to Darcha and Atal Tunnel North Portal to Sarchu as open.
The 2026 Panchayat tourism ban ended in early March. But nobody has independently confirmed fresh snowfall in Sissu on 31 October.
Fresh snow can change mountain roads overnight. Recheck the status right before you leave Manali, even if you checked last night.
What Is the Sissu Road Status Today?

Here is what most tourists get wrong. They see one word, "open", and assume the whole day is sorted.
In Sissu, you are really checking three different things: road status, tourist entry status and snowfall status. Each one can change on its own.
The road can stay open while the Panchayat pauses tourism activities. Snow can fall on the peaks while the highway stays clear. Keep the three answers apart and your planning gets much easier.
We see this confusion every season. A traveller reads "Sissu is open" on one site and "Sissu is closed" on another, and both pages are talking about different things.
So let us walk the route the way your car will actually drive it.
Manali to Solang Valley
From Manali, the road heads out toward the Solang side and the tunnel. This first stretch decides your day more often than people expect.
After major snowfall, police can stop onward traffic on this side even when Manali town itself is fully accessible.
Your hotel street being clear tells you nothing about the tunnel approach. Many travellers learn this only when they reach a stopped line of cars.
Solang to Atal Tunnel
The tunnel can work perfectly while the road leading to it stays unsafe. Snow on the approach, ice on the bends and ongoing clearance work all matter.
Police manage traffic here when conditions turn. They may hold vehicles for a while or turn tourist traffic back until the approach is safe again.
So "Atal Tunnel open today" really means two things. The tunnel is operating, and the road to it is safe enough to drive.
Atal Tunnel North Portal to Sissu
This is the stretch that matters most for a Sissu sightseeing day. The 31 October tracker lists Gramphoo to Sissu via Atal Tunnel as OPEN.
Our first insider tip: look for this exact line, not just the broad Manali to Keylong label. The broad route tells you the highway is moving.
The Gramphoo to Sissu line tells you your actual destination is reachable. Most generic guides skip this distinction completely.
If you are building a Manali holiday around this drive, our Manali tour packages keep Sissu as a flexible day instead of a fixed slot.
And if Lahaul is the main reason you are coming, our Sissu tour packages cover stays and transport on the Lahaul side of the tunnel.
Is It Snowing in Sissu Today?

We will be straight with you. We found no authoritative same day report confirming fresh snowfall in Sissu on 31 October 2026.
The IMD Himachal Pradesh subdivision warning dated 31 October showed no warning for 31 October and no subdivision warning through 6 November.
A missing warning does not prove clear skies over Sissu. It simply gives no sign of a major snow spell in the official outlook.
Falling Snow, Settled Snow and Snow on the Peaks
People mix up three very different things when they search for Sissu snowfall today.
Fresh snowfall means flakes falling right now. Settled snow means older snow still lying on the ground from an earlier spell.
Then there is snow you can see higher up on the surrounding mountains. That view can look wintry even on a dry, sunny day.
A photo of white slopes on social media tells you about the second or third kind. It does not prove snow is falling in Sissu at that moment.
What the Late October 2026 Reports Show
Reports around 25 October 2026 described fresh snow near the Atal Tunnel North Portal and high Lahaul.
An earlier spell hit the Sissu and Lahaul area around 15 October, and it affected traffic through the tunnel corridor.
So snow already forms part of the late October landscape at higher elevations. If you specifically want to watch snow fall, check a same day weather or ground report before you leave.
Why We Are Not Giving You a Temperature
The sources we checked gave conflicting Sissu temperatures for 31 October, so we have left the number out.
A wrong number is worse than none, especially when you are deciding how many layers to pack. Check a same day forecast for Sissu itself, not for Manali.
Is Atal Tunnel Open Today for Sissu?

The latest road information supports access through the tunnel corridor on 31 October 2026. The tracker lines for Gramphoo to Sissu and the North Portal to Sarchu both read open.
A few basics help you picture the drive. The Atal Tunnel runs 9.02 km under the mountains.
Its South Portal sits about 25 km from Manali. Its North Portal opens near Teling and Sissu in the Lahaul Valley.
PIB describes the tunnel as giving all-weather connectivity between the Manali side and Lahaul and Spiti. That phrase causes more confusion than any other line about this route.
Why "All-Weather" Does Not Mean "Never Closed"
All-weather means you no longer depend on crossing a high pass to reach Lahaul. It does not mean nothing can ever stop traffic for a while.
Snow, avalanche risk, maintenance, accidents and police controls can all restrict movement for a few hours or longer.
In March 2026, heavy snowfall near Atal Tunnel stranded more than 200 vehicles. BRO had to carry out major rescue and snow clearance work.
In mid October 2026, snow affected traffic again. Reports on 16 October said the tunnel had reopened for all vehicles after the spell passed.
That is why our team checks the status every morning in winter, even for trips we planned weeks earlier. A booking made in good weather guarantees nothing about the day itself.
Once the road question is settled, our guide to adventure activities in Manali helps you plan the Manali side of your trip around the weather.
If you would rather have someone check the route on your travel morning and shape a Manali and Sissu plan around it, our local team does exactly that.
Are Tourists Allowed to Enter Sissu Today?

This question has nothing to do with whether NH-3 or the tunnel is open. The road follows one set of authorities, and tourism in the village follows the local Sissu Panchayat.
As of our 31 October 2026 check, no Panchayat tourism restriction applies. But the 2026 history explains why you keep seeing old "Sissu closed" posts.
What Happened in January and February 2026
Sissu Panchayat suspended tourism activities for 40 days, from 20 January to 28 February 2026. The Panchayat took this step to protect local religious and cultural observances.
The order covered the Panchayat tourism area, including the area around the helipad.
Reports named ATV riding, hot air ballooning, zip lining, skiing, bungee jumping and tube sliding among the stopped activities, along with other tourism operations.
Where Things Stand Now
By early March 2026, reports confirmed that the Panchayat had lifted the temporary restriction and tourists had returned.
So ignore any page that calls Sissu closed today because of that old order. It ended months ago.
Here is our second insider tip: A Panchayat restriction targets tourism activities in the village area, which is a separate matter from highway traffic.
That is why the official road page and a Panchayat order can tell two different stories on the same day. Always read both.
Will Sissu Close Again in January or February 2027?

If you are planning Sissu in January 2027 or February, this is the question to watch.
Sissu has paused tourism around important cultural and religious observances in previous seasons, including the 20 January to 28 February window in 2026.
But our research up to late October 2026 found no confirmed 2027 Sissu Panchayat closure notice. Nobody has confirmed the 2027 dates yet.
We will not copy the 2026 dates and call them 2027 dates. Any page doing that is guessing, and a guess can wreck a honeymoon or a family trip.
If your trip falls in late January or February 2027, look for a fresh Panchayat or district announcement before you make Sissu the centrepiece of your itinerary.
What we tell our travellers for those weeks is simple. Book your Manali stay, treat Sissu as a "yes if allowed" day, and keep a lower altitude backup ready.
Do You Need a Permit or e-Aagman Registration for Sissu?
A lot of online guides blur two separate systems into one. Here is how they actually split.
e-Aagman Vehicle Entry for Lahaul and Spiti
The official Himachal e-Aagman portal says that applicants with vehicles who want to enter District Lahaul and Spiti must apply through its e-pass system.
The portal separates an e-permit for certain circuits from an e-ticket for other places. Which one you need depends on your route and destination.
We could not confirm the current e-Aagman fee from the official portal data we checked. So do not assume it is free.
You will also see a SADA entry charge quoted on other travel sites. We found no official current figure for it, so check the portal yourself before you pay anyone.
Is a Rohtang Pass Tourism Permit Required for Sissu?
The Rohtang tourism permit runs on its own official website. It covers vehicles visiting Rohtang Pass, not the tunnel route to Sissu.
The official Rohtang site lists a fee of ₹500 for a car, jeep or MUV plus a ₹50 congestion charge.
It also caps tourism traffic at 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles per day.
That permit exists for Rohtang sightseeing. Using the Atal Tunnel to reach Sissu does not automatically require it.
Here is the money saving tip: If Sissu is your only goal for the day, do not spend ₹550 on a Rohtang permit just to feel safe. Sort out the Lahaul vehicle entry instead.
And a warning to go with it. If anyone tells you that you must buy the ₹500 Rohtang permit simply to drive through Atal Tunnel to Sissu, ask them to show you that rule on the official portal before you pay.
Do You Need a 4x4 to Reach Sissu?

No verified permanent rule says every visitor needs a 4x4 to reach Sissu every day. Vehicle rules on this road depend on conditions.
After heavy snowfall, police may stop tourist traffic for a while. They may allow only suitable vehicles, ask for chains or hold movement until clearance finishes.
On clear days with the road fully open, ordinary vehicles may get through without trouble.
We cannot promise that your hatchback, sedan, 2WD SUV or bike will pass on a given day. Only a same day police advisory can confirm that.
You will find plenty of Reddit and traveller threads asking whether a normal 4x2 can reach Sissu. Those threads show how confusing this gets, but they are not official rules.
In our experience, the smartest move after a snow spell is asking your driver or hotel at breakfast what the latest police restriction says. People on the ground usually hear first.
What Happens to Sissu Road After Heavy Snowfall?

Snow does not simply close the road and open it again. Things move in a sequence, and knowing it helps you stay calm.
First, fresh snow makes the approaches slippery. Even after the snow stops, black ice can stay on the road for some time.
Next, police may restrict or halt tourist vehicles. BRO or other road teams then clear the route.
Finally, traffic reopens step by step once the road is safe again. The road does not snap back to normal the moment the sky clears.
Two Real Examples From 2026
October 2026 gave a clean example. Snow hit the Atal Tunnel and Lahaul corridor around 15 October, and reports on 16 October said the tunnel had reopened for all vehicles.
March 2026 showed the harder version. Heavy snow near the tunnel stranded more than 200 vehicles and needed major BRO rescue and clearance work.
So a page that says "Atal Tunnel is open all year" without explaining these breaks misleads you. The tunnel gives all-weather connectivity, not a promise for every single day.
The Safety Warning We Repeat Every Winter
Black ice is the real danger once the snow stops. The road can look dry and still behave like glass under your tyres.
If police stop traffic, do not cross the barrier, argue or hunt for a way around it. The March 2026 rescue of more than 200 stranded vehicles shows how fast a snow day can turn serious.
How to Check Sissu Road Status Before Leaving Manali
You need three sources, checked in this order.
Start with the District Lahaul and Spiti official road status page. Look for the Manali to Keylong line first, then any Sissu specific line in the tracker you use.
Next, check recent police or district administration advisories. These carry the weather specific restrictions that a simple open or closed label can miss.
Then confirm with someone on the ground. A driver, hotel or local operator with a same morning update often knows about ice or police holds before anything appears online.
Check again shortly before you leave, even if you checked the previous night. A page that said open yesterday cannot promise anything after overnight snowfall.
The Timing Tip That Changes Your Day
Leave Manali early. We use a 5:30 to 6:00 AM start for our Lahaul drives, because the Atal Tunnel can get crowded later in the morning.
An early start also gives you more daylight to wait out a police hold or turn back calmly, instead of racing the evening cold.
What Can You Do If Sissu Is Closed?

First rule: never cross or argue with a police barrier. The officers on that road can see conditions you cannot see from your car window.
A good Manali itinerary always carries a lower altitude backup. If Sissu is off, switch to Manali and Solang side sightseeing, but only when their own roads are open and safe.
Here is the thing we tell people to skip on a winter Sissu day: do not lock in another time bound booking straight after the drive. If police hold traffic, you lose both, and you pay for both.
Waiting for hours at a barrier is another trap. If the restriction looks set for the day, switch plans early and enjoy the backup properly.
If your dates sit in spring rather than winter, our guide to Rohtang Pass in March explains what that month really looks like on the high road.
And if your trip shifts a few weeks later, Rohtang Pass in April covers the next stage of the season.
Is Sissu Worth Visiting When There Is No Fresh Snow?

Yes. Sissu is far more than a snow point, and treating it as one sets you up for disappointment.
Sissu village sits at about 3,130 metres on the right bank of the Chandra River. The valley opens wide here, with the river below and bare mountains rising on both sides.
You also get the waterfall and lake area close to the village. We have not listed opening hours or activity prices because we could not confirm current figures.
The biggest moment often comes before you even park. You leave the greener Manali side, drive 9.02 km through the tunnel and come out into a wider, drier, more open valley.
Our team has done that drive many times, and the switch in scenery at the North Portal still makes everyone in the car go quiet.
An honest note: on busy days, tourist congestion can slow the drive both ways. Do not expect an empty valley on a holiday weekend.
If Sissu sparks a bigger Lahaul plan for summer, our Spiti Valley tour packages continue beyond Sissu into Lahaul and Spiti.
Planning a Sissu Trip From Manali
The road distance from Manali to Sissu is about 39 to 40 km. Treat that as a rough figure, not an exact one.
We will not promise you a drive time. Traffic, snow, tourist congestion and police checks can stretch it a lot.
In winter, treat Sissu as weather dependent. Do not schedule anything time critical right after it.
In our experience, keeping the Sissu day flexible works much better than forcing the drive when the weather changes.
Chai, Fuel and Money on the Lahaul Side
Sissu works well as a tea stop. Pick one of the small dhabas in Sissu village and order a hot chai while you look across the Chandra valley.
Sissu also has mobile network, which helps if you need to recheck road updates before driving back.
Fill your fuel tank in Manali. Sissu only sometimes has fuel available, and you do not want to gamble on it in the cold.
We have not quoted a Manali to Sissu taxi fare because current rates vary and we could not confirm one. Agree the full fare, including waiting time, before you set off.
What to Carry for a Winter Sissu Day
Dress for the Lahaul side, not for your Manali hotel lobby. Carry thermals, a fleece and a windproof jacket, even if Manali feels mild when you leave.
Wear sturdy shoes with real grip. Snow patches and icy edges near parking spots turn sports sandals into a bad joke.
Pack high SPF sunscreen and proper sunglasses. The sun at this altitude burns faster than you expect, and snow throws the glare straight back at your face.
Keep cash in small notes for chai, parking and snacks. Small stalls do not always take UPI when the network drops.
Carry a charged power bank and a basic medicine kit with paracetamol, ORS and something for nausea.
The mistake we see most often is the single hoodie. People step out of the tunnel into the wind, last ten minutes outside and spend the rest of the stop in the car.
One more honest point: if anyone in your group feels a headache or breathlessness at Sissu, do not push higher that day. Head back toward Manali and rest.
Who Should Plan an Overnight Stay
Sissu has guesthouses and homestays if you want a proper room on the Lahaul side.
We usually suggest a night at a mid altitude point like Manali or Sissu for anyone heading higher into Lahaul or Spiti. It gives your body time to adjust before bigger climbs.
And if you want a Manali and Sissu plan checked against the real road status on your travel morning, message us.
Your Final Check Before Leaving Manali
So, is Sissu open today? On 31 October 2026, the road status says yes, the 2026 tourism ban has ended, and live snowfall remains unconfirmed.
All three answers can change overnight. Make one last same day check before you leave Manali, and Sissu will rarely catch you out.
