Kashmir Packing List 2026: What to Wear in Every Season

Kashmir16 minutes read
Kashmir packing list

Most people build their Kashmir packing list around the Srinagar weather forecast. That is the most common packing mistake we see.

Gulmarg sits more than a kilometre higher than Srinagar, and the Gondola climbs higher still. Pack for your coldest stop, not your first one.

Quick Answer: What Should You Pack for Kashmir?

Dress in layers and pack for the coldest or highest place on your plan, not for Srinagar alone.

Bring comfortable closed walking shoes with grip, one warm layer that you can take on and off, and light rain protection in every season.

In winter, or for any snow activity in Gulmarg, add much warmer insulation plus waterproof outerwear and waterproof boots.

If you haven't finalised the route yet, our Kashmir tour packages show how Srinagar and Gulmarg usually fit together, which helps you pack for the right mix of places.

Why Does Your Kashmir Packing List Depend So Much on Where You Go?

Srinagar vs Gulmarg: The Temperature Difference Travellers Underestimate

Srinagar sits at 1,585 m. Gulmarg base sits at 2,650 m. The Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 reaches about 3,980 m.

That height gap changes everything you feel on your skin. Take July as an example.

In July, Srinagar has a normal daily minimum of about 18.4°C and a maximum of about 30.0°C. Gulmarg sits at about 12.0°C and 21.1°C in the same month.

So a warm afternoon in Srinagar and a cool afternoon in Gulmarg can happen on the same day of the same trip.

Pack for Altitude, Time of Day and Weather, Not Only the Month

You can walk around Srinagar in a cotton shirt at noon and still feel cold two hours later on a Gulmarg outing.

Evenings and early mornings drop further. Cloud, wind and rain make any temperature feel colder than the number suggests.

One honest note on the numbers. Every temperature in this guide comes from long term IMD climate normals for 1991 to 2020.

These are monthly averages, not a forecast for your travel dates. Real days can run warmer or colder, so check the live forecast a few days before you leave.

What Should You Always Pack for Kashmir in Any Season?

What Should You Always Pack for Kashmir in Any Season?

Some things go in your bag no matter the month.

Carry a government photo ID, and keep it in your day bag rather than your suitcase. You will want it handy through the trip.

Pack your personal prescription medicines in their original strips, with enough for the full trip plus a few spare days.

Bring your phone charger and a power bank. Long sightseeing days and cold weather both drain batteries faster than you expect.

Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm or moisturiser belong in every season. Higher places mean stronger sun, and cold air dries out lips and skin quickly.

A refillable water bottle and a compact day bag complete the basics. The day bag matters more than people think, and we explain why further down.

For footwear, comfortable closed walking shoes with grip do the most work across a normal sightseeing trip.

Check Your Mobile Connection Before You Leave

A Department of Telecommunications order keeps restrictions on prepaid roaming between the J&K service area and the rest of India.

We can't promise how your specific SIM will behave. Call your carrier before departure and ask about current J&K roaming support for your plan.

What Should You Wear in Kashmir in Spring?

What Should You Wear in Kashmir in Spring?

Spring in Kashmir changes fast. Srinagar starts to feel pleasant, while Gulmarg often still holds real cold.

What to Wear in March

In March, Srinagar averages a daily minimum of 4.3°C and a maximum of 15.5°C.

Gulmarg averages minus 2.7°C at night and 5.4°C by day. That is winter clothing weather, not spring clothing weather.

Pack thermals, a warm fleece or wool layer, and a proper insulated jacket if Gulmarg sits on your plan. Gloves and a cap still earn their space.

What to Wear in April

In April, Srinagar averages 7.9°C to 20.6°C. Gulmarg averages 1.9°C to 10.4°C.

A warm middle layer plus a packable, weather resistant outer layer works well here. You can wear both on cold mornings and strip down to a shirt by afternoon in Srinagar.

April showers can arrive without much warning, so that outer layer does double duty.

What to Wear in May

In May, Srinagar averages 11.2°C to 24.7°C. Gulmarg averages 6.1°C to 15.6°C.

This is the month that fools people. Srinagar feels like summer, so they pack only T shirts and light cotton.

Then they reach Gulmarg, the wind picks up, and a 6°C morning feels nothing like a Srinagar afternoon. Keep a fleece and a light jacket in the plan.

Not sure which spring month suits your group and what that means for your bags? Share your dates and we'll suggest the right layers for your exact route.

What Should You Wear in Kashmir in Summer?

What Should You Wear in Kashmir in Summer?

June to August in Srinagar

Srinagar summer runs warm. June averages 15.0°C to 28.5°C, July 18.4°C to 30.0°C, and August 17.8°C to 29.7°C.

Pack breathable daytime clothes such as cotton shirts, light trousers and kurtas. Afternoons in the city can feel properly warm.

Kashmir summer does not always mean cold. In Srinagar, you will mostly want light clothing.

Still, carry one easy warm layer. Mornings, evenings on the water and any mountain day all call for it.

What Changes If You Visit Gulmarg or Sonamarg?

Gulmarg in June averages 9.4°C to 19.3°C. July runs 12.0°C to 21.1°C, and August 11.7°C to 20.5°C.

Those minimums sit well below Srinagar's summer nights. A 9°C morning in shorts and a thin T shirt feels miserable.

Here is a tip generic guides miss. Keep the fleece or jacket in your day bag, not in the suitcase at the hotel.

Once you leave Srinagar for the day, your main luggage stays behind. Whatever you didn't carry, you won't have.

Do You Need Rain Protection in Summer?

Yes, a light one. Kashmir gets rain in summer, and mountain weather can turn in an hour.

A compact rain shell or a light waterproof jacket folds into your day bag and keeps you dry on a sudden shower. You don't need heavy monsoon gear like the plains sometimes demand.

If you are still comparing summer options, our popular tours page gives you an idea of which routes our travellers pick most, which helps you plan your bag around real stops.

What Should You Wear in Kashmir in Autumn?

What Should You Wear in Kashmir in Autumn?

Autumn gives Kashmir clear days and colder nights. The gap between noon and night grows each week.

What to Wear in September

In September, Srinagar averages 13.1°C to 27.6°C. Gulmarg averages 8.6°C to 18.5°C.

Days still feel warm in the city. Light layering matters because mornings start cool and Gulmarg stays noticeably colder.

A long sleeve shirt, a fleece and a light jacket cover most September days.

What to Wear in October

In October, Srinagar averages 6.2°C to 23.0°C. Gulmarg averages 3.8°C to 14.2°C.

A Srinagar afternoon can feel pleasant in a shirt. A Gulmarg morning at 3.8°C needs a real warm layer and an outer jacket.

Pack thermals if you feel the cold easily. Many travellers wear them only in the mornings and evenings.

What to Wear in November

In November, Srinagar averages 1.2°C to 15.9°C. Gulmarg averages minus 0.6°C to 9.0°C.

Treat November as the start of winter packing. Bring thermals, a warm middle layer, an insulated jacket, gloves and a cap.

Early and late November can feel very different, so check the forecast closely in the final week.

What Should You Pack for Kashmir in Winter?

What Should You Pack for Kashmir in Winter?

The Winter Layering System, Explained Simply

Think of winter dressing as three jobs, each done by a different layer.

The base layer sits against your skin and handles sweat, so you stay dry. Wet skin gets cold quickly.

The middle layer traps warmth. A fleece, a wool sweater or a light down piece does this job.

The outer layer blocks wind, snow and wet. In Gulmarg this matters as much as warmth itself.

You don't need one special fabric or a jacket with a particular rating. You need the three jobs covered, and the freedom to add or remove a layer as the day changes.

Srinagar Winter Packing

Srinagar in December averages minus 1.6°C to 9.9°C. January averages minus 1.9°C to 7.1°C. February averages 0.7°C to 10.5°C.

Pack thermals, a fleece or wool layer, an insulated outer jacket, warm socks, gloves and a cap.

Remember these are monthly averages. A cold spell can push nights well below them, so lean warmer rather than lighter.

Gulmarg Winter Packing

Gulmarg gets much colder. December averages minus 4.8°C to 4.6°C. January averages minus 7.7°C to 0.7°C. February averages minus 6.4°C to 1.8°C.

You may see blogs claim Gulmarg's normal January daytime high sits at minus 12°C. The IMD normals show a January average maximum of 0.7°C. Cold, yes, but not that figure.

For Gulmarg, bring warmer insulation, waterproof outerwear and waterproof footwear that handles snow and slush.

Snow melts on warm clothes and soaks through anything that isn't waterproof. Wet layers at minus 7°C turn a fun day into a rough one. This is our most serious winter warning.

Should You Buy or Rent Winter Clothes in Gulmarg?

The current official Gulmarg rate list, linked by the J&K Cable Car Corporation, lists a coat or jacket at ₹120 per day and boots at ₹120 per day.

The approved rate notification behind this list carries a date of 14 May 2025, though the official portal still links it in 2026. Reconfirm the rate and availability before you travel.

Fit, quality and rates can all change, so check the gear properly before paying.

We usually tell guests to bring personal fit items from home. Thermals, socks and well fitting gloves are easier to bring than to find in your size on the spot.

Bulky outerwear and snow boots are different. If you only need them for one Gulmarg day, renting can save you both money and suitcase space.

Here is a money saving tip. Don't buy an expensive snow jacket and snow boots back home just for one Gulmarg day. Skip that purchase, bring good thermals, and rent the bulky gear.

One caution. If someone at Gulmarg quotes far above ₹120 a day for a jacket or boots, mention the officially published rate and ask them to explain the difference before you agree.

If you want a winter trip planned around the right gear and the right days, you can customise your Kashmir trip with our team.

What Shoes Should You Pack for a Kashmir Trip?

What Shoes Should You Pack for a Kashmir Trip?

Srinagar Sightseeing and Normal Summer Trips

Comfortable closed walking shoes with grip usually work best. Gardens, markets, ghats and old city lanes all mean hours on your feet.

Pick a pair you have already broken in. New shoes on a holiday cause more blisters than any mountain path.

Spring and Wet Conditions

Spring brings damp grass and muddy paths, especially outside the city.

Water resistant footwear keeps your socks dry through a day of wet ground. Dry feet stay warmer too.

Gulmarg Snow and Winter

For snow or slush, pack waterproof boots with good grip.

Breathable mesh sneakers feel great in summer. Once snow melts into the mesh, though, your feet stay wet and cold for the rest of the day.

Grip matters as much as waterproofing. Packed snow and icy patches get slippery near busy areas.

Trekking

Only bring proper trekking boots if you are actually trekking.

Most Kashmir holidays involve sightseeing, short walks and maybe a snow day. Heavy hiking boots just take up space on that kind of trip.

Srinagar vs Gulmarg: What Should Be in Your Day Bag?

Srinagar vs Gulmarg: What Should Be in Your Day Bag?

Picture a typical day. You leave your Srinagar hotel in the morning, and the air feels mild. You are in a light shirt.

A few hours later you stand at Gulmarg base at 2,650 m. If you ride up to Phase 2, you reach about 3,980 m. The wind feels completely different up there.

That is why the Srinagar forecast should never be your only guide.

Pack one extra insulating layer and a compact outer shell. Add gloves and a cap in colder months, plus sunglasses, water, your phone, power bank and personal medicines.

Our team recommends keeping that extra layer in the day bag even if the morning feels warm. We have seen too many travellers regret leaving it in the car.

An insider tip for cold months. Keep your gloves in your jacket pocket, not deep in the bag. You'll want them the second you step out, and fumbling with cold fingers is no fun.

Once you're up there, warm up with a cup of kahwa, the Kashmiri green tea with saffron and cardamom, at the tea stalls near the Gulmarg Gondola base station.

Timing Your Gondola Day

Current J&K Cable Car Corporation information shows boarding starts at 8:00 AM, closes at 3:30 PM, and the last return runs at 5:00 PM.

Reach early. The morning gives you more time up top, and you can add or remove layers without rushing for the last queue. Recheck timings before your trip, since operational details change.

What Should Women Wear in Kashmir?

What Should Women Wear in Kashmir?

There's no single dress rule for all of Kashmir. Practical, comfortable travel clothing works well.

Full length trousers, jeans, kurtas, shirts and layered outfits suit most days of sightseeing. They also handle changing temperatures better than one heavy outfit.

Religious sites set their own rules, so follow the rules of the specific place you visit.

For example, the Directorate of Tourism page for Khanqah-e-Moula in Srinagar says modest dress is mandatory there. Women should cover their heads, men should avoid shorts, and everyone removes shoes before entering.

A light scarf or stole in your day bag makes these visits easy. It also adds a little warmth on a breezy evening.

What Should You Pack for a Houseboat Stay in Srinagar?

What Should You Pack for a Houseboat Stay in Srinagar?

Houseboats work better with a small bag. Pack a compact day or overnight bag with just what you need for the night.

Easy indoor footwear, like slip on sandals or soft slippers, helps you move around comfortably.

In colder months, bring warm socks. Evenings on the water can feel cooler than the city streets.

Keep your charger, power bank and personal medicines in that small bag, so you aren't digging through a big suitcase at night.

What Should Families, Children and Senior Travellers Pack?

Pack extra warm layers for children and older travellers. They often feel temperature changes faster.

Bring familiar prescription medicines from home, in enough quantity for the whole trip. Comfortable footwear matters for everyone, especially on long walking days.

Keep critical items like medicines, a spare layer and ID in the day bag, not buried in the main suitcase.

If anyone in your group has medical concerns, or your plan includes high places like the upper Gondola, discuss the itinerary with your own doctor before you travel. We don't recommend any specific medicine for altitude.

What Can You Rent or Buy After Reaching Kashmir?

What Can You Rent or Buy After Reaching Kashmir?

You can rent common winter outerwear and boots in Gulmarg.

The currently published official rates stand at ₹120 per day for a coat or jacket and ₹120 per day for boots. The underlying notification dates to 14 May 2025, so reconfirm the rate before you travel.

Personal fit items work better from home. Thermals, socks and comfortable walking shoes need to fit you well from day one.

In our experience, travellers who bring their own base layers and rent only the bulky snow gear pack lighter and feel more comfortable overall.

What Should You NOT Pack for Kashmir?

Overpacking hurts more than underpacking on most Kashmir trips.

Several bulky coats eat your suitcase and your patience. One good outer jacket for the season, plus layers underneath, does the job better.

Uncomfortable fashion shoes look nice in photos and hurt by the second day. Unnecessary trekking gear adds weight you won't use on a normal sightseeing trip.

The biggest mistake, though, is packing only for Srinagar when your plan includes Gulmarg. That single decision causes more cold, unhappy days than anything else we see.

A Simple Kashmir Packing Formula for a 5 to 7 Day Trip

A Simple Kashmir Packing Formula for a 5 to 7 Day Trip

This is our editorial suggestion, not a fixed rule. Adjust it for your season and your comfort.

Think in a capsule. Pick a few tops and bottoms that mix with each other, so you can rotate and reuse them.

Choose one main outer jacket suited to the season. Add a middle layer and, in cold months, a set or two of thermals.

Skip duplicate bulky pieces. Two heavy jackets rarely add anything one good jacket plus layers can't cover.

Pick footwear by activity. Walking shoes for city days, and waterproof boots only if snow or slush sits on your plan.

What we tell our travellers is simple. Build the bag around your coldest day, then remove anything that doesn't serve at least two days of the trip.

If you want a ready route to pack around, our Kashmir holiday packages lay out typical day plans for Srinagar and Gulmarg.

2026 Packing Notes Travellers Should Know

The J&K Cable Car Corporation currently states that the Gulmarg Gondola closes on the second and fourth Monday of every month for preventive maintenance. Check your calendar before you plan your Gulmarg day.

Current boarding runs from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with the last return at 5:00 PM. Recheck these before your trip.

Sonamarg information conflicts right now. The Government of India says the Sonamarg Tunnel provides all weather connectivity and aims to make Sonamarg a year round destination.

The Directorate of Tourism page still carries older wording that says Sonamarg is accessible only from May to October. If you plan a winter visit, check the latest road and activity status before you leave.

Prepaid roaming restrictions between the J&K service area and the rest of India still apply under a DoT order. Confirm your plan with your telecom provider before departure.

If you plan to continue from Kashmir toward Ladakh, pack for even colder, higher conditions and look at our Ladakh tour packages for route ideas.

Do I need thermals in Kashmir in May or June?

For Srinagar, usually not. May averages 11.2°C to 24.7°C, and June 15.0°C to 28.5°C. Gulmarg runs colder, with May nights near 6.1°C and June nights near 9.4°C. If you feel cold easily, one set of thermals for Gulmarg mornings makes sense.

What shoes are best for a Kashmir trip?

Comfortable closed walking shoes with grip suit most sightseeing trips. Choose water resistant shoes for damp spring paths and waterproof boots with grip for snow or slush in Gulmarg. Bring trekking boots only if you actually plan to trek.

Do I need snow boots for Gulmarg?
