Can You Work Remotely During a Winter Spiti Expedition in 2026-27? Calls, Wi-Fi and Power

Lahaul and Spiti20 minutes read
Winter Spiti remote work

Working remotely during a Winter Spiti expedition in 2026 to 2027 can be challenging due to limited mobile connectivity, unreliable internet access and occasional power interruptions.

While places like Kaza may offer opportunities to connect online, remote stretches of the journey, extreme cold and changing weather conditions can make regular work calls and video meetings difficult.

This guide by Travel Coffee explains what to expect when working remotely in Winter Spiti, including mobile network availability, Wi-Fi reliability, electricity access, charging facilities and important connectivity limitations during a 4x4 expedition.

It will help you understand whether remote work is practical during your trip, what arrangements to make before departure and whether taking leave from work is a better option for a comfortable and stress free Winter Spiti experience.

Quick Answer

Can you work remotely during a winter Spiti expedition? Yes, but only in a limited way. You can manage emails, writing and flexible tasks from a connected stay in Kaza or Tabo.

Nobody can guarantee the network or electricity in winter, though. Daily compulsory video meetings carry real risk, and you should treat every travel and sightseeing day as an offline day.

What Most Remote Workers Get Wrong About Winter Spiti

Spiti Winter

Most people hear "Kaza has Jio" and assume the whole trip will feel like a slow office day. That is the mistake.

An expedition keeps moving. You spend hours on the road, you sleep in different villages, and snow can change the plan overnight.

A signal in one Kaza homestay tells you nothing about the next village, the next room or the next snowy morning.

So the real question is not "does Spiti have the internet?" The real question is "can my job survive a few days when it doesn't?"

Is Winter Spiti Actually Suitable for Remote Work?

Is Winter Spiti Actually Suitable for Remote Work?

Winter Spiti suits travellers whose work can wait a few hours. It does not suit anyone whose income depends on being online at a fixed time.

In our experience planning winter trips, the people who come back happy are the ones who decided this honestly before they booked.

Which jobs can handle intermittent internet?

Writers, designers, researchers and developers who work asynchronously have the best chance. You can draft, design or code offline, then sync when the connection returns.

The trick is to split your work into two piles. One pile needs no internet at all. The other pile needs only a short upload window.

If you can finish the first pile on the road and save the second pile for a quiet evening in Kaza, winter Spiti can work for you.

Tasks like replying to emails, sending a finished file or checking a shared document need a short, decent connection. They do not need a stable hour.

Which jobs need a more reliable destination?

Teachers who run live classes, support agents, remote sales staff and anyone with frequent client calls should think twice.

The same goes for live product demos and anyone responsible for time critical online operations, like a server on call rotation or a trading desk.

These jobs fail the moment a meeting drops. And in winter Spiti, a dropped meeting is a matter of when, not if.

An expedition that moves between villages every day differs completely from a workation where you sit in one connected room for two weeks.

Our winter Spiti expedition packages focus on the journey, the snow and the villages. We design them as expeditions, not office setups, and we never promise remote working facilities with them.

Where Can You Get Mobile Internet During Winter Spiti?

Where Can You Get Mobile Internet During Winter Spiti?

Your best chance of a usable connection sits in Kaza and Tabo. Everywhere higher or more remote, plan for weak, patchy or no signal.

Kaza: The most practical connectivity base

Kaza is the main services town inside Spiti. Shops, the health centre and most winter stays sit here, so it makes the strongest base if you need occasional internet.

Travelers have reported both BSNL and Jio in Kaza. Snowfall, infrastructure problems and the exact spot of your homestay can still knock the signal out.

One 2026 travel guide reports Jio speeds of 15 to 20 Mbps in Kaza on good days. Read that as a traveller's good day observation, not a winter promise.

Here is an insider tip most guides miss: Signals can change from one side of a building to the other. When you reach your room, walk around with both phones and note where the bars hold steady. That corner becomes your desk.

Tabo: An alternative with reported connectivity

Travelers have also reported BSNL and Jio in Tabo. Some describe good internet there, and one guide mentions up to 30 Mbps in some reports.

No reliable winter comparison proves that Tabo always beats Kaza, though. Treat Tabo as a second option, not an upgrade.

Tabo also has fewer services than Kaza, so check that your stay is actually open before you plan work there.

Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komic and Pin Valley

The higher villages tell a different story. Traveller reports describe weak, intermittent or absent coverage in Langza, Hikkim, Komic and parts of Pin Valley.

Kibber falls in the same category for planning purposes. You might catch a signal on one rooftop and lose it ten steps later.

Coverage also varies inside the same settlement, so one traveller's "it worked for me" does not cover your room.

Our winter Spiti facilities and network guide covers what else runs in these villages during the cold months.

Which SIM Works Best in Winter Spiti: BSNL, Jio or Airtel?

Carry BSNL and Jio together. That pairing gives you the widest reported coverage and a second data option when one network struggles.

BSNL as the broader coverage option

Current travel sources generally describe BSNL as having the widest geographical coverage across Spiti.

Wider coverage does not mean faster data. It also does not mean the service survives heavy snowfall.

That wider reach may still give you a basic call or message where other networks struggle. That alone makes it worth carrying.

Jio as an additional data option

Travellers report Jio 4G in Kaza and Tabo in 2026, with limited or intermittent coverage in a few other spots.

Jio gives you a useful second data line. We cannot promise any winter download speed on it, and neither can anyone else.

What about Airtel and Vi?

Airtel coverage reports conflict. One May 2026 traveller discussion mentioned Airtel 5G in Kaza from an earlier trip, while an updated connectivity guide describes Airtel as absent or unreliable in Spiti proper.

So nobody can honestly say Airtel definitely works or definitely fails across Kaza this winter. Ask your specific accommodation what works in their building right now.

Vi users get the clearest answer. Reports describe little dependable Vi coverage inside Spiti.

What we tell our travellers is simple. Keep BSNL and Jio as two separate operators in a dual SIM phone, and activate and recharge both before you leave Shimla.

Two SIMs still cannot save you when weather disrupts several networks at once. They only improve your odds.

Travellers report that prepaid SIMs from other Indian states work in Spiti where the operator has a signal. Unlike some other border regions, you should not face a prepaid restriction here. Coverage still depends on the operator and your exact location.

Can You Take Office Calls, Zoom Meetings and WhatsApp Calls?

A normal phone call might go through where a Zoom meeting keeps freezing. Signal bars and a stable meeting are two very different things.

Normal phone calls versus internet calls

A regular cellular call needs only a basic voice signal. A WhatsApp call needs mobile data that stays steady for the whole call.

Zoom and Google Meet ask for even more. They need steady upload and download in both directions, minute after minute.

So a spot in Kaza might let you ring your manager but still drop your video meeting. Plan around that gap.

What does a Zoom meeting actually require?

Zoom publishes its own bandwidth recommendations. For a one to one 720p video call, Zoom recommends about 1.2 Mbps upload and 1.2 Mbps download.

For a group 720p video call, Zoom recommends 2.6 Mbps upload and 1.8 Mbps download. Audio only VoIP needs about 60 to 80 kbps.

These figures describe what the app needs. They say nothing about the speeds you will actually find in Spiti.

A good speed test also does not guarantee a smooth meeting. Latency, packet loss, falling upload speed and short outages can wreck a call even after a strong test result.

What about screen sharing, VPN and office OTPs?

Screen sharing and VPN tools may work when the connection holds steady. We cannot promise either for an expedition.

The quieter problems catch people off guard. An SMS OTP arrives late, a login session expires, or your authentication app needs a connection right when you lose one.

Public or shared homestay networks also carry security risks for office logins.

Sort this out before you leave. Ask your IT team for approved offline access and a secure backup login method that does not depend on SMS.

If your company allows audio only attendance, it needs far less bandwidth than video. Treat it as a lighter option, not a guaranteed fix.

Is Hotel Wi-Fi Available in Kaza and Tabo During Winter?

Is Hotel Wi-Fi Available in Kaza and Tabo During Winter?

Some stays in Kaza and Tabo advertise Wi-Fi. An advert proves only that someone typed it into a listing.

Fibre broadband versus mobile hotspot Wi-Fi

BSNL launched fibre to the home (FTTH) service in Kaza in December 2023. That tells you the town has fibre infrastructure.

It does not tell you that your homestay has FTTH, that the signal reaches your room, or that the line keeps running through a storm.

Some stays may run their Wi-Fi off a mobile hotspot. That setup can only perform as well as the mobile signal in that building.

Any claim about a specific property's working winter fibre or its measured speed needs fresh checking.

Why hotel listings are not enough

A "free Wi-Fi" tag and a tested, working connection are not the same thing.

Ask the host for a recent, dated upload and download test taken from the actual room or workspace you will use.

Here is the timing tip that changes everything: Ask for that test during your expected working hours, because an evening test and a morning test can tell two different stories.

Also ask what type of connection the property uses, whether it has a backup line, and what happens to the internet when the electricity fails.

Our guide to winter Spiti homestays in Kaza, Tabo and Kibber shows how much heating, hot water and power backup vary from one property to the next.

How Reliable Is Electricity in Kaza During Winter?

Power in winter Spiti depends on the weather. A heavy snowfall can knock out electricity, internet routers and mobile towers together.

What does heavy snowfall do to the power supply?

On 23 January 2026, a PTI report quoting state emergency officials recorded 53 disrupted electricity distribution transformers and 292 blocked roads across Lahaul and Spiti district after snowfall.

Those numbers cover the whole district, not just Kaza. Still, they show how one storm can hit power and roads at the same time.

No verified source gives an average daily power cut in Kaza. Anyone who promises you "only two hours a day" is guessing.

When the power goes, it can take your homestay router, your charging socket and sometimes the nearby mobile network with it.

Why charging your laptop is only half the problem

Your laptop might sit at full battery while the router beside it goes dark. A charged laptop with no internet still cannot join a meeting.

Some properties run a generator, inverter or solar backup. That backup often powers only selected circuits, like a few lights, and not the router or your room sockets.

Ask exactly what the backup keeps running. "We have a generator" is not an answer to that question.

Heat matters too. If the property heats its rooms with electric heaters, a power cut can leave you typing with stiff fingers in a freezing room. A warm workspace counts as much as Wi-Fi.

How Can You Keep Your Laptop and Phone Charged?

Charge everything whenever the power is on, and carry a power bank that can actually charge your laptop.

Check your charging equipment before departure

A USB C power delivery (PD) power bank can charge many modern laptops. Not every power bank can do this, though.

Check your laptop's charging requirement on its adapter or spec sheet. Then check that the power bank's output matches it. Do this at home in Shimla or Delhi, not on a cold night in Kaza.

Ask about generators, inverters and charging sockets

Ask the host whether your room has working charging points. Then ask whether those points still work during a power cut.

Ask one more question that most travellers forget: does the backup also run the internet router?

Nobody can give you a fixed backup runtime without checking their own equipment, so treat any confident number with care.

Protect devices from winter conditions

Keep batteries and electronics dry and away from unnecessary freezing exposure. Store your phone and power bank inside your jacket or sleeping bag at night.

If your laptop sat in a cold vehicle all day, let it warm up indoors before you switch it on or plug it in.

Here is a habit we suggest to every winter traveller: Top up every device the moment power returns, even if it shows 70 percent. Do not wait for 10 percent.

What Should You Ask a Winter Spiti Homestay Before Booking?

What Should You Ask a Winter Spiti Homestay Before Booking?

Ask six things before you pay: winter opening, connection type, recent speed proof, power backup, room heating and a usable workspace.

Six practical accommodation checks

First, confirm the property will actually stay open on your dates. Not every property stays open through winter, and our homestay research shows big differences between properties.

Next, ask what internet connection they use. FTTH, a mobile hotspot and a satellite link all behave differently.

Then ask for recent speed evidence, details of their power backup, and how they heat the rooms.

Finally, ask whether you get a table and chair where you can work for a few hours. A bed and a cold floor make a poor office.

Also confirm meals, and ask what the host does if snowfall delays your arrival by a day. A good host will have a clear answer.

One money saving tip from us: never pay extra for a room someone calls "work friendly" until you see a dated speed test from that room. The premium means nothing without proof.

How to verify a Wi-Fi claim

Ask the host to send a screenshot of a recent speed test. Then ask whether they took it in your guest room or in the reception or kitchen.

Ask whether the router keeps running on backup electricity. If it does not, a power cut means no Wi-Fi, full stop.

We trust hosts who say "it usually works, but snow can cut it" far more than hosts who promise perfect internet. The realistic answer is the honest one.

Will You Have Internet While Exploring Winter Spiti Villages?

Maybe, in patches. You should never schedule work on a sightseeing day.

Sightseeing days should not be workdays

On village days you sit in a moving vehicle, pass through stretches of weak coverage and stop wherever the road and weather allow.

A meeting fixed for 11 AM can land you on a snowy bend with zero bars. Nobody can rescue that call.

Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komic and Pin Valley do not offer signals reliable enough for fixed commitments. Some days a message might slip through. You just cannot plan on it.

Skip the idea of a "workation night" in a high village like Kibber or Langza. The views pull you outside, the signal pushes you back to Kaza, and you end up doing neither job well. Enjoy those villages fully on a leave day instead.

Snowfall can change access

Snow can close village roads for a while. Your driver may turn back, and you might miss the homestay or the signal spot you counted on.

Chandratal does not belong to a normal deep winter plan at all. Its high pass access closes for the season, so drop it from winter work calculations completely.

If you are still deciding whether to go this season, read our guide on is Spiti Valley open in winter first.

How Should You Plan Workdays During a Winter Spiti Expedition?

How Should You Plan Workdays During a Winter Spiti Expedition?

Work only on stationary days in a verified stay in Kaza. Keep every driving and village day as leave.

A realistic example of an eight day plan

This example shows the shape of a plan. It is not a guaranteed tour schedule, and your real trip could take longer.

You start in Shimla and drive into Kinnaur, with an overnight stop on the approach. You then continue towards Tabo and Kaza when road conditions allow.

Once you reach Kaza, you keep a couple of stationary days for light work. Book those days only after the host has proved the connection from your actual room.

On those Kaza work days, take your lunch break at a local café or dhaba around Kaza Market, depending on what is open during your visit.

If available, order a hot bowl of thukpa and a cup of butter tea. A warm meal and a short walk can be a welcome break from staring at a buffering screen.

You keep the high village circuit to Kibber, Langza, Hikkim and Komic for leave days. Then you return through the winter Kinnaur corridor with extra time set aside for weather.

Why buffer days matter

Snow, a road closure, a bad night's sleep, altitude adjustment or a network outage can all wipe out a planned work session.

What we tell our travellers every winter: do not book a crucial deadline or an immovable meeting for the day after you plan to return. Give yourself at least one free day as a cushion.

Our Shimla to Kaza winter route and road guide explains where the journey usually slows down.

What Should You Do Before Leaving for Winter Spiti?

What Should You Do Before Leaving for Winter Spiti?

Get your work offline, set expectations with your team and save your emergency details before you lose signal.

Prepare work for offline use

Download the work files you are allowed to carry, prepare offline documents and sync everything essential while you still have good internet in Shimla.

Follow your employer's security policy for confidential files. A lost laptop in the snow should not turn into a data breach.

Agree on communication expectations

Tell your manager or clients about the low connectivity period before you book, not after.

Pick a colleague who can cover urgent meetings, and agree on a realistic reply window, such as within a day, for flexible work.

Create an emergency communication plan

Save your accommodation contacts, driver details, bookings and emergency numbers offline on your phone and on paper.

Share your planned route and a daily check in plan with someone you trust at home. If they do not hear from you, they know where to start asking.

A normal mobile phone cannot guarantee emergency contact everywhere in Spiti, and neither can an unverified satellite gadget.

On satellite internet, keep expectations grounded. As of 8 October 2026, Starlink had not launched commercially in India and was still awaiting final approvals, so you cannot plan around an ordinary Starlink subscription.

What Road, Permit and Safety Conditions Affect Remote Work in 2026-27?

In winter you reach Kaza through Shimla and Kinnaur, not through Manali. That single fact shapes your whole schedule.

How do travellers reach Kaza in winter?

The Lahaul and Spiti district administration describes the Shimla, Kinnaur, Kaza route as about 412 km, with about 20 hours of driving excluding an overnight halt.

Treat those 20 hours as an estimate, not a promise. Winter snow, road work and checkpoints can stretch the journey.

The Keylong to Kaza road over Kunzum Pass normally closes in winter, roughly from October or November until June or July, depending on snowfall.

The Atal Tunnel gets you into Lahaul, but it does not bypass the Kunzum closure. Some online posts still claim you can drive straight to Kaza from Manali through the tunnel in winter. Ignore them.

The official road status page and recent reports show some uncertainty about this season's exact closing date, so check fresh status before you travel.

Are permits required?

Himachal Tourism says Indian citizens do not need a general permit to visit Spiti.

Foreign nationals must confirm Inner Line Permit or Protected Area Permit rules for their exact route and itinerary, including relevant stretches through Kinnaur.

Official sources describe some protected locations differently, so confirm the current rules for your route rather than relying on a blog.

Medical and emergency considerations

Kaza has a Community Health Centre, and Tabo has a Primary Health Centre.

Save these two numbers before you leave: 112 for Himachal Pradesh emergency response and 1077 for the Lahaul and Spiti district disaster and rescue helpline.

These numbers only help if your call connects. In a no signal zone, your check in plan with family matters even more.

Spiti sits at high altitude. Give your body time to adjust and do not plan demanding work the moment you arrive. Talk to your doctor before the trip about any health concerns or medicines.

Should You Choose Winter Spiti, Kalpa or Reckong Peo for a Workation?

Should You Choose Winter Spiti, Kalpa or Reckong Peo for a Workation?

Choose winter Spiti if you can take leave or work loosely. Choose a fixed base in Kinnaur if work reliability matters more.

When Winter Spiti makes sense

Winter Spiti suits you if you can take leave, handle asynchronous tasks or go long stretches without contact.

You will enjoy frozen streams, quiet monasteries and snow covered villages far more when you are not checking your phone for a meeting alert every ten minutes.

When we plan Himachal trips for working travellers, we push hard for proper leave on the Spiti stretch. The trip deserves your full attention.

When Kalpa or Reckong Peo is a better option

If reliable work matters more than the full expedition, look at Kalpa and Reckong Peo in Kinnaur. You pass through this district on the winter road to Spiti anyway.

We cannot guarantee internet or electricity there either. The smart move is to research one specific winter stay with verified connectivity, a heated workspace and power backup, then stay put.

Our Kalpa workation Wi-Fi and stay guide walks through how to judge a stay there.

If you prefer a planned trip around the valley, our Kinnaur tour packages give you a slower base with shorter driving days.

Final Verdict: Should You Bring Your Laptop to Winter Spiti?

If your job demands uninterrupted remote work, a winter Spiti expedition is the wrong choice. No route, homestay or SIM card can change that.

If your work bends, careful planning can give you a few productive hours in Kaza without ruining the trip. Verify the room, carry two SIMs, charge everything and keep travel days offline.
