Yes, the practical winter way to reach Kaza is through Shimla and Kinnaur. There is no other sensible winter route.

The government calls this an almost all weather road, which sounds reassuring but does not mean open every single day. Snow, ice, rockfall and landslides can still shut sections for hours or longer.

The Manali to Kaza route over Kunzum is not your winter backup. That side stays snow-locked for long stretches, so your entire winter plan lives and dies on the Kinnaur road.

As of today, nobody can tell you the exact road condition for December 2026 to March 2027. Verify the evening before you travel, then again on departure morning.

What Is the Exact Shimla to Kaza Winter Route?

You drive from Shimla through Theog, Narkanda, Rampur Bushahr, the Jeori and Chaura area, Bhabanagar and Wangtu, Tapri and Karcham, Powari, Reckong Peo, Spillow and Moorang, Pooh, Khab Sangam, Nako, Chango, Sumdo, Tabo, the Attargo or Shichling area, and finally into Kaza.

Reckong Peo is your most useful overnight and service stop, reached from the Powari junction. Treat it as the point where you decide whether to push on.

Where does NH-5 change to NH-505?

Here is what most tourists get wrong. They think one highway runs the whole way to Kaza. It does not.

NH-5 carries you through Shimla, Theog, Narkanda and Rampur as it heads into Kinnaur. At Khab Sangam, NH-505 branches off from NH-5 and then connects Chango, Sumdo, Tabo, Attargo and Kaza.

Reckong Peo itself sits on NH-505A, which leaves NH-5 near Powari and runs up to Peo and Kalpa. Plenty of online articles loosely call the entire trip NH-5. That is not technically correct, and knowing the difference helps you read road notices properly.

How Many Kilometres and Driving Hours Does Shimla to Kaza Take in Winter?

Read that carefully. Twenty hours is driving time, not a promise about how long a winter day actually takes. Snow clearing, road holds, short winter daylight and ice all stretch the real clock.

In our experience, trying to eat this route in one continuous push is how people end up driving broken mountain sections after dark. Split it. A single overnight at Reckong Peo, sometimes two halts, turns a brutal trip into a manageable one.

Where Should You Stay Overnight Between Shimla and Kaza?

Reckong Peo as the first practical halt

Reckong Peo is 235 km from Shimla according to Kinnaur district administration. It works as your decision point because it has fuel, HRTC information and district services all in one place.

If the upper road is uncertain, this is where you pause and gather real information before committing to the higher, colder sections.

Tabo as the conservative second halt

Official district information places Tabo about 46 km from Kaza. Tabo also has a Primary Health Centre, which matters in winter.

One honest caution: confirm your winter homestay directly before you leave Reckong Peo. We have not verified which specific properties stay open or their exact opening dates, so do not assume a bed is waiting.

What about Kalpa and Nako?

You can consider Kalpa when its approach road is clear, but do not treat it as guaranteed accessible after fresh snowfall. The climb up can hold snow longer than the main highway.

For Nako, winter accommodation and services can vary, so confirm availability locally before travelling rather than assuming a particular hotel or homestay will be open.

Which Sections Are Most Affected by Snow, Ice, Landslides and Rockfall?

Shimla to Narkanda

Fresh winter weather can lay snow and ice on the higher shaded sections around Narkanda. This early stretch feels easy in good weather and turns slick fast when it snows. We won't invent closure dates or snow depths for you, because those change year to year.

Nigulsari, Chaura and lower Kinnaur

This is where the route reminds you it is a mountain highway. On 6 August 2026, NH-5 at Nigulsari was blocked for about 11 hours, from roughly 6:30 am until 5:30 pm, after rocks and debris fell onto the road.

Earlier, on 20 February 2026, a rockfall near Kharon bridge stopped traffic toward Pooh, Kaza and Spiti for roughly 1.5 hours before it cleared. 

Neither of these was a full seasonal shutdown, and that is exactly the point. This route can quietly swallow hours even when it is generally operational.

Pooh, Khab, Nako and Malling Nala

On 4 May 2026, a landslide at Malling Nala closed the Reckong Peo to Kaza NH-505 route. Malling is a known trouble spot in upper Kinnaur, and this is why same-day road information matters so much up here. A road that was fine yesterday can be shut this morning.

Nako to Tabo and onward to Kaza

The shaded upper sections between Nako, Tabo and Kaza bring snow and black ice in winter. Black ice is thin and hard to see, and it catches even careful drivers on shaded curves. 

Treat this as practical traveller and operator guidance, not an official hazard map. Slow down through shade, especially early morning before the sun hits the road.

Where Can You Find Fuel, Food, Toilets and Repairs?

Fuel

IndianOil currently lists a fuel outlet at Reckong Peo and another at Kaza.

Fill your tank at Reckong Peo or Powari rather than gambling on the upper route. Here is where the sources disagree, so we will be straight with you. 

IndianOil's locator lists Chhorgia Filling Station at Pooh/Nako, but a 2026 official government project document says there is no existing petrol pump or service station in Pooh subdivision, and none between Powari and Kaza.

Intermediate fuel availability beyond Powari can vary, especially in winter, so fill up in the Reckong Peo/Powari area and confirm any Pooh or Nako fuel stop locally before relying on it.

Food and toilets

Reckong Peo and Kaza are your main practical hubs for food and toilets. For Pooh, Nako and Tabo, basic food and toilet facilities may be available, but winter opening hours can be limited and change with weather and local operations, so confirm them during the journey.

One winter reality worth knowing: accommodation up here sometimes runs on bucket water or dry toilets, because the plumbing gets winterised against freezing. It is not a fault, it is how the mountains cope with the cold.

Repairs

We won't name a guaranteed winter mechanic beyond Reckong Peo, because none has been verified. That is the honest answer.

The fix is preparation. Get your tyres, coolant, battery, brakes and spare wheel checked before you enter upper Kinnaur. Once you are past Peo, help is thin, so the work you do beforehand is what protects you.

Does Mobile Network Work Between Reckong Peo and Kaza in Winter?

Based on 2026 traveller reporting, BSNL has the broadest coverage in Spiti. Jio is reported to work in Kaza and Tabo. Airtel works better through Kinnaur but should not be treated as continuous coverage once you are in Spiti proper.

This is recent traveller reporting, not a guaranteed operator coverage map. Expect dead zones between settlements no matter which SIM you carry.

What we tell our travellers: before you leave Reckong Peo, download offline maps and save your accommodation and driver numbers. A carried BSNL SIM as backup is a smart, cheap insurance for the Spiti stretch.

Is HRTC, a Shared Taxi or a Private Local Vehicle Better?

HRTC

HRTC is the budget option. Kinnaur district administration says buses do operate in the region, but winter and early spring road conditions can force long breaks in service.

We are not publishing a fixed Reckong Peo to Kaza departure time, because current online sources conflict, giving figures around 5:30 am and around 7:00 to 7:30 am. 

Confirm the winter departure directly with the depot. The verified RM Reckong Peo number is 01786-222444. We won't quote a winter fare, because we couldn't verify one.

Shared taxi

A shared taxi can suit a solo traveller when one is actually running. We won't call it a guaranteed daily scheduled service, because we found no verified winter timetable. 

Exact shared-taxi departure times are not reliably fixed for winter, so availability and timing should be confirmed locally on the day rather than treated as a guaranteed daily service.

Private local winter vehicle

For first-time winter travellers, families and anyone on fixed dates, we recommend a private local high-clearance SUV or 4x4 with a driver who knows the Shimla, Kinnaur and Spiti winter road. Snow chains are sensible winter kit.

One firm warning. A 4x4 does not make a closed road open. Never use it to slip past official restrictions. The vehicle helps you handle the road that is open, not defeat the road that is shut.

What Is the Backup Plan If the Road Closes Before Reaching Kaza?

Think of this as a simple decision chain rather than a panic.

If you are still at Reckong Peo when the upper route closes, wait there. Peo has beds, food, fuel and information. Rushing toward the blockage only strands you somewhere worse.

If you are already beyond Peo, stop at the last settlement where you have actually confirmed a place to sleep. Do not push into the dark hoping something opens up.

Never walk across an active landslide, rockfall or snow clearance site to get around a block. Coordinate instead with your driver, your host, HRTC and the local administration, who will know when clearance is realistic.

And to say it plainly again: driving toward Manali and Kunzum is not the winter alternative. That door is closed.

What If the Road Closes After You Reach Kaza?

If the road shuts once you are safely in Kaza, the normal plan is simple. Stay put and wait for the Kinnaur route to reopen. Your winter exit is back the way you came, through Tabo, Sumdo, Kinnaur and Shimla.

How Should You Check Shimla to Kaza Road Status Before Leaving?

Never trust a single source. Check the Lahaul and Spiti district information, then check Kinnaur district notices too, since your trouble spots sit in both districts.

Then confirm on the ground: call the Reckong Peo HRTC depot, talk to your local driver, and check with your next confirmed accommodation. These people see the road before any webpage updates.

Check once the evening before departure, then again in the morning. Conditions here flip overnight.

Can You Travel from Delhi to Kaza in Winter?

Yes, but treat it as stages. The route runs Delhi, the Chandigarh or Kalka side, Shimla or Narkanda, then Kinnaur, Reckong Peo, Tabo and Kaza.

We are not quoting a single Delhi to Kaza distance, because we don't have a reliable figure to stand behind. Handle the Delhi to Shimla or Narkanda leg as its own travel stage, rest, then start the mountain corridor fresh.

What Has Changed for Winter 2026-27?

Recent months gave clear evidence that this route interrupts. The Nigulsari closure, the Malling Nala closure and the February Kharon bridge rockfall all happened in 2026. None was permanent, but each cost real hours.

Several NH-505 improvement projects between Sumdo, Kaza and Gramphoo have target or revised completion dates extending into 2027, so active work zones can still affect you. 

On the brighter side, 2026 mobile reports show better connectivity than the old articles that flatly claimed no network after Reckong Peo.

On permits, current Himachal Tourism guidance says Indian citizens do not need a permit to enter Spiti. Foreign tourists entering via the Shimla and Kinnaur route require an Inner Line Permit.
