Where to Stay in Winter Spiti 2026: Kaza, Tabo & Kibber Homestays With Heating, Hot Water & Toilets

You found a homestay online. It has a heater icon, a hot water icon, an attached bathroom listed. Looks sorted, right?

Here is the problem. That listing was probably written for summer. In January, when the pipes freeze at minus 20 and half the village shuts down, none of those icons mean what you think they mean.

This guide by Travel Coffee fixes that. We will walk you through which Kaza, Tabo and Kibber stays actually work in deep winter, and the exact questions to ask before you pay a single rupee.

Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay in Winter Spiti?

For most winter travellers, Kaza is the smartest default base. It is the sub divisional headquarters of Spiti, so it holds the widest logistical role and gives you the best shot at accommodation choice and local services.

Tabo works well as a quieter stop on the Kinnaur approach, and Kibber is a much higher, specialised village stay where winter road access depends heavily on snow.

Before you pay for any Winter Spiti homestay, confirm six things: that it is genuinely open on your dates, where the heating actually sits, how hot water is supplied, the toilet type, electricity backup, and whether meals are included.

What Does "Winter Ready" Actually Mean for a Spiti Homestay?

Most tourists get this wrong. They treat a summer amenities list as proof of winter service. A heater icon does not tell you if that heater is in your bedroom or in a dining room you will leave at 9 PM. This one gap causes most of the cold, miserable nights we hear about.

Heating in the Bedroom Versus Heating in the Common Room

Documented winter heating in Spiti comes in a few forms. A bukhari, tandoor or wood stove. Electric room heaters. And electric blankets.

Here is the catch. A bukhari burning in a common room is not the same as heat in your bedroom overnight. You warm up over dinner, then walk to a freezing room to sleep.

At SpitiDiaries in Kaza, a March 2026 traveller specifically reported a bukhari in the common room. Tow Dhey in Tabo currently advertises room heaters. Maitreya Mud House advertises a tandoor heater in winter. Three different setups, three different questions to ask.

Running Hot Water Versus a Bucket of Heated Water

Freezing pipes are a real winter problem here. But not every property loses running water.

Recent SpitiDiaries reports from January to March 2026 show at least one Kaza property kept running water through severe cold. Other stays lean on heated buckets, boilers or stored water instead.

So the honest answer is: it depends on the property. Ask exactly how their system works in January, not whether they "have hot water."

Western Toilets Versus Traditional Dry Toilets

Traditional dry toilets are normal and practical in Spiti, precisely because water plumbing freezes. Do not treat a dry toilet as a downgrade. In deep winter it often works better than a fancy commode with no water.

Some winter stays do advertise Western toilets and attached bathrooms. Just know that a Western commode alone does not prove flushing water will run continuously through January.

Electricity, Generator Backup and Charging

Winter electricity can drop out. Electric heating only works when power is on, unless the property runs a backup system. We will not pretend the whole valley has uninterrupted power, because it does not.

Which Kaza Homestays and Hotels Stay Open in Winter?

Start here: summer hotel lists are useless for this question. A place ranking high on booking sites in June may be locked and empty in January. You need stays with recent winter evidence.

SpitiDiaries Homestay

This is one of the few Kaza places with documented guest stays across January, February and March 2026.

A March 2026 traveller reported running water during harsh cold, plus a common room with a bukhari. A February 2026 guest also reported running water.

And a 22 January 2026 guest reported that the dormitory had an attached bathroom and toilet with running hot water.

One honest caveat. That January running hot water report is specifically for the dormitory described in that review. We cannot tell you every room here has the same bathroom setup, so ask about your specific room. The booking listing also describes heating and a fireplace.

Kaza Homestay by Homestays of India

Its current listing explicitly says it stays open in winter, which is exactly the confirmation you want.

The listing describes four guest rooms, bathrooms with Western toilets, and running hot water.

Published room tariffs currently list the Classic Room at ₹3,200, the Superior Room at ₹4,000, and an extra person charge of ₹1,000, but reconfirm these rates for your exact travel dates before booking.

Reconfirm all three prices for your actual dates. Winter rates shift, and a listing figure is a starting point, not a guarantee.

Mahamaya Regency

The current operator page says Mahamaya Regency stays open throughout winter. The property has an in house restaurant, which matters a lot when outside food is scarce.

We will not invent the bedroom heating system for you. Reconfirm the exact room heating method, the bathroom water arrangement, and backup electricity for your dates before booking.

Other Kaza Stays With Useful Amenities But Opening to Confirm

Story Homes currently advertises a heater at ₹600 per heater per night and generator power backup. For Story Homes, confirm directly whether the property will be operating during your specific winter dates before making a reservation.

Nyingma House currently advertises hot water, power backup and attached bathrooms. For Nyingma House, confirm directly whether the property remains operational during peak winter, particularly in January and February.

One Hotel You Should Not Assume Is Open

The official Himachal tourism corporation page for Hotel Spiti in Kaza says it operates from May to October. There it is in plain text: a well known Kaza hotel that shows up online yet is simply not a winter option. This is why you verify.

Where Can You Stay in Tabo During Winter?

The Lahaul and Spiti district administration places Tabo about 46 km from Kaza, at an altitude of 10,004 feet.

Lower than Kaza, which some travellers find easier, though we will not claim that makes altitude sickness impossible or Tabo medically safe. Height alone does not decide that.

Tow Dhey Himalaya

Its current booking page advertises an attached bathroom, boiler hot water and a room heater.

Published rates currently start from ₹2,200 for single occupancy, ₹2,500 for double occupancy, and ₹3,000 for triple occupancy, but reconfirm the rate for your exact travel dates before booking.

Reconfirm these, since they vary by date. Also confirm directly whether Tow Dhey Himalaya will be operating during your specific January or February dates, as listed amenities alone do not establish continuous winter opening.

Maitreya Mud House

The current property information describes modern attached washrooms, electric and solar or solar diesel supported hot water, and a tandoor heater in winter.

Now the useful bit. A historical notice from the property said Maitreya Mud House was open all 12 months during winter 2023 to 2024.

That same notice said Maitreya Regency and Sidharth were closed from 1 November 2023 to 31 March 2024 because water froze in their pipes.

Same ownership, wildly different winter capability. That is the whole lesson of this article in one example.

Do not assume the 2023 to 2024 schedule still applies. Confirm directly that Maitreya Mud House will be open for your exact winter 2026 to 2027 travel dates before booking.

Can You Stay in Kibber in Winter?

Official sources put Kibber roughly 16 to 18 km from Kaza. We use a range because the sources differ slightly, and honestly, in snow the drive time matters more than the exact kilometre figure.

Government sources put Kibber at roughly 14,000 to 14,200 feet, around 4,205 metres. That makes it a significantly higher village stay than Tabo, and a more specialised choice rather than a casual first base.

Norling Homestay

TripAdvisor holds a February 2026 stay review, so recent winter operation is supported. Older winter reports describe a tandoor or room stove and electric blankets. The current accommodation description refers to attached bathrooms.

But here is a genuine conflict you deserve to know about. Another winter guest account describes dry or limited toilet arrangements. So the bathroom information is contradictory across sources. We are not going to smooth that over.

Confirm the exact room, whether its toilet is Western or dry, whether it is attached, and how water works on your specific winter dates. Ask before you commit, not after you arrive.

Who Should Overnight in Kibber?

Kibber suits travellers deliberately chasing a high village experience, wildlife tracking or snow leopard focused travel. It is not automatically the best first winter base for everyone.

Kaza vs Tabo vs Kibber: Which Is the Best Winter Base?

Choose Kaza for Logistical Flexibility

Kaza is the sub divisional headquarters of Spiti. For the best chance at accommodation choice and access to essential local services, it is the strongest default base. We still will not pretend every shop, café or hotel stays open through winter, because plenty close.

Choose Tabo for a Quieter Stop on the Kinnaur Approach

Tabo sits about 46 km from Kaza per the district administration, at 10,004 feet. It works as a useful route stop and a monastery focused village on the way in. We make no acclimatisation promises from the lower height alone.

Choose Kibber for a Deliberate High Village Experience

Kibber is roughly 16 to 18 km from Kaza at about 14,000 to 14,200 feet. Winter access leans more on local road conditions, so pick it on purpose, not by default.

What Type of Heating Should You Ask For?

A bukhari is a metal wood stove that throws strong heat while it burns, then cools once the fire dies down. A tandoor or room stove works similarly, warming the space around it.

An electric room heater needs steady power to keep going. Electric blankets warm the bed itself, which is a quiet winner on a cold night.

Traditional mud construction holds heat reasonably well, but that is passive. It is not the same as active overnight heating.

So the one question that cuts through everything: is the heating inside my bedroom, and for how many hours, or is the warm space only the dining or common room? We will not quote heater timings, because those vary by property. You ask, they tell you.

Will You Get Hot Water in Kaza, Tabo and Kibber in January?

There is no single valley wide answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing.

Frozen plumbing is a documented winter problem. Yet January to March 2026 guests at SpitiDiaries reported running water, and that January dormitory guest reported running hot water in the attached bathroom.

Tow Dhey advertises boiler hot water. Maitreya Mud House describes solar or diesel supported hot water.

Each of those is a property specific fact. None of them means every Spiti homestay has hot water in January. Confirm per property, every time.

Are Western Toilets Usable in Winter Spiti?

A property can physically have a Western toilet and still hand you a bucket if the pipes freeze. The commode is only half the system. The water is the other half.

Traditional dry toilets are common and practical in freezing conditions, and there is no shame in using one. Kaza Homestay advertises Western toilets.

SpitiDiaries has recent evidence of an attached, functioning toilet in one winter dormitory. Norling's bathroom information conflicts across sources and needs confirming.

Here is what we tell our travellers who really need a Western toilet: ask for the exact winter setup, not just whether the room has an attached bathroom. Those are two different questions.

Do Homestays Have Electricity, Power Backup and Charging?

We will not promise continuous electricity anywhere in the valley in winter. Story Homes advertises generator power backup. Nyingma House advertises power backup. Treat both as individual examples, not a valley wide rule.

A small money and sanity saver

carry a good power bank and charge your phone and camera batteries whenever the power is on. In our experience, the traveller who tops up early never gets caught with a dead camera on the one clear morning the light is perfect.

Are Breakfast and Dinner Included in Winter Homestays?

Eating at your property matters far more in winter, because outside food choices shrink hard once the season ends. A closed café row in Kaza is a real thing in January.

Kaza Homestay explicitly lists complimentary breakfast and dinner. SpitiDiaries winter guests mention good food. Norling serves food, and winter travellers describe homely meals. That said, not every Spiti homestay tariff includes two meals.

Ask one clean question: is your quote room only, breakfast included, or dinner too? The answer changes your real daily cost more than the room rate does.

Should You Book Winter Accommodation Online or Confirm by Phone?

Book ahead, then reconfirm directly by phone shortly before you leave. Both steps, not one.

When you call, reconfirm winter opening, the exact room, bedroom heating, heater timings, hot water method, toilet type, power backup and meals. A booking made in October can quietly lapse by January.

One more question people forget

Ask what happens to your booking if the approach road closes for a day or two after snowfall. Knowing the property's answer in advance saves a stressful scramble later.

What Changed for Winter Spiti Travel in 2026?

The official Lahaul and Spiti road status page listed Keylong to Kaza as closed on 20 August 2026. The district route information calls the Shimla to Kaza road an almost all weather road, which is why it is your winter lifeline.

The Keylong to Kaza road across Kunzum shuts in winter, broadly from October or November into June or July depending on snow.

During the 2025 to 2026 season, the Kunzum route reopened to 4x4 vehicles on 20 May 2026 after more than six months closed. Regular Kullu to Kaza HRTC service resumed on 7 June 2026, after being suspended on 15 October 2025.

So winter travellers plan around the Shimla and Kinnaur approach, and check the official road status right before departure. A clear forecast in Shimla tells you nothing about a landslide near Kinnaur.

On permits, official sources conflict, and we will not paper over it. Himachal Tourism says Indian citizens need no permit to enter Spiti, and says foreign travellers entering via Shimla and Kinnaur need an inner line permit.

A current Kinnaur district page lists Tabo among protected areas, yet separately lists Kaza and Kibber among places foreign tourists can visit without a PAP. Another Lahaul and Spiti district page uses broader protected area wording that includes Kaza.

We are not going to resolve that for you, because the official record itself disagrees.

Foreign nationals should confirm their exact current PAP or ILP requirement with the competent issuing authority before travelling, as official sources currently provide differing guidance for some parts of Spiti.

Questions to Ask Your Homestay Before Paying

Keep it simple and ask directly. Is the property definitely open on your exact dates? Is the heating inside the bedroom, and what type is it, and does it run overnight? How is hot water supplied, and what happens when pipes freeze?

Then the bathroom and power. Is the toilet Western or dry, and is the bathroom attached? Is there generator or solar backup, and can you charge your phone and camera? Are breakfast and dinner included, and what happens if a snow closure delays your arrival?
