How Many Leave Days Do You Need for a 9-Day Winter Spiti Trip in 2026-27?

Lahaul and Spiti18 minutes read
Winter Spiti leave days

Planning a 9 day Winter Spiti trip in 2026 to 2027 requires careful leave planning, especially for working professionals travelling from cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi.

Flight timings, overnight bus journeys, fixed group departure dates and possible winter travel delays can all affect how many days you need to take off from work.

This guide by Travel Coffee explains how to calculate leave days for a 9 day Winter Spiti expedition, including travel days, weekend adjustments, flight connections, Delhi departure schedules and recommended buffer days.

It will help you understand how much leave to apply for, how to make the most of weekends and what to consider before booking your flights and confirming your Winter Spiti adventure.

Quick Answer: How Many Leave Days Do You Need?

If you work Monday to Friday, you need five leave days for a 9-day Winter Spiti trip. You take one working week off and wrap it with the two weekends on either side.

If your employer gives you Christmas 2026 or Republic Day 2027 as a paid holiday, that drops to four leave days.

That number covers the planned trip only. Winter roads can delay your return, so keep extra leave in reserve if your office allows it.

Does a 9-Day Winter Spiti Trip Mean Taking 9 Days Off Work?

Does a 9-Day Winter Spiti Trip Mean Taking 9 Days Off Work?

No. This is the single biggest mistake we see when people start planning, and it stops a lot of working professionals from even trying Winter Spiti.

A 9-day trip means nine calendar days. Your office only counts working days. Those are two different numbers.

If your trip runs from a Saturday to the following Sunday, four of those nine days are weekends. Only five days are weekdays, so you only use five leave days.

Tour packages also count days differently from your HR portal. A package counts the overnight bus and the arrival morning as tour days, even though you spend them sitting in a Volvo or walking home from the bus stop.

Our own 9-day Winter Spiti group tour works this way. We sell it as 9 days and 8 nights, and that includes six nights in stays plus two nights on overnight Volvo journeys.

So when you see "9 days" on a package page, read it as "nine calendar days from departure to arrival." Then count your weekdays separately.

What counts as a travel day versus a leave day?

A travel day is any day the tour is running. A leave day is a day your employer expects you at work and you are not there.

Those overlap only partly. If your tour starts at night, after your shift ends, that day is a tour day but not a leave day.

So a Friday evening departure can be Day 1 of your trip without costing you Friday's leave. You finish work, pick up your bag and head to the pickup point.

This only works if you can actually leave the office on time and reach the pickup point before departure. If your office runs late on Fridays or your commute is long, plan for a half-day or a full leave day instead.

Which Departure Day Saves the Most Office Leave?

Your departure day matters as much as the trip length. Here is the plain arithmetic for any nine-day stretch, assuming a Monday to Friday office.

A trip starting on Saturday covers five weekdays. That is the lowest possible count.

A trip starting on Friday or Sunday covers six weekdays, if every working hour falls inside the trip.

A trip starting on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday covers seven weekdays.

There is one exception that changes everything, and that is the Friday evening start. We explain it below.

Saturday departure and Sunday return

Say you leave on a Saturday and come home on the Sunday nine days later.

Inside that window you get two Saturdays, two Sundays and five weekdays. You take leave for Monday to Friday, and the weekends cover the rest.

That is five leave days, as long as your office has no other restrictions on leave around those dates.

Friday evening departure and Saturday return

Now shift the whole trip back by one day. You leave on a Friday and return on the following Saturday.

On paper, this window holds six weekdays: the first Friday plus Monday to Friday of the next week.

But if you work the full first Friday and leave after office, you do not need leave for it. You only take the five days of the following week.

So you still use five leave days, and you get your Sunday at home after the trip. That spare Sunday is the real advantage, and we come back to it later.

One condition matters here: Your journey to Delhi or wherever the pickup happens must also fit after office hours. If you live outside Delhi and need half a day just to reach the pickup point, count that time honestly.

Why starting on Monday can use more leave

Plenty of people pick a Monday start because it "feels" like the start of a holiday. It is the most expensive choice for your leave balance.

A nine-day trip that starts on a Monday ends on the Tuesday of the next week. That covers seven weekdays, so you burn seven leave days for the exact same trip length.

Same mountains, same roads, two extra leave days gone. Pick your departure date before you pick your package.

Can You Take a 9-Day Winter Spiti Trip with Just 4 Leave Days?

Can You Take a 9-Day Winter Spiti Trip with Just 4 Leave Days?

Yes, if a public holiday falls inside your trip and your employer actually gives you that day off. Christmas 2026 and Republic Day 2027 both line up well this winter.

These are calendar examples to show the maths. They are not confirmed Travel Coffee departure dates, so always check actual batches before you apply for leave.

Christmas 2026 leave example

Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday, 25 December, and it sits on the Indian central government holiday calendar.

Take the window from Saturday, 19 December 2026 to Sunday, 27 December 2026. That is nine calendar days, and the weekdays inside it run from Monday 21 to Friday 25 December.

If your employer gives you Christmas off, you only need leave from 21 to 24 December. That is four leave days.

You can also do the Friday evening version. Leave after work on Friday, 18 December and return on Saturday, 26 December. Again, you only need leave from 21 to 24 December, so four days.

Both versions only work if your office observes Christmas as a paid holiday.

Republic Day 2027 leave example

Republic Day 2027 falls on Tuesday, 26 January.

Picture a Friday evening departure on 22 January 2027 and a return on Saturday, 30 January 2027. That is nine calendar days.

You work the first Friday and leave after office. Then you take leave on Monday, 25 January, and from Wednesday 27 to Friday 29 January.

Republic Day covers Tuesday. That adds up to four leave days, provided your employer recognises Republic Day as a holiday.

What if the employer does not follow these holidays?

Many private companies, shift-based teams and offices in different states follow their own holiday lists. The government calendar does not decide your day off. Your employer does.

Before you count Christmas or Republic Day as a free day, open your company's official holiday calendar and check. If the holiday is not on it, your four-day plan quietly becomes a five-day plan.

What If Your Office Works on Saturdays?

Everything above assumes your Saturdays are free. If your office runs Monday to Saturday, the maths changes a lot.

A Saturday to following Sunday trip then covers seven working days: both Saturdays plus the five weekdays in between. That assumes both Saturdays are normal working days and no public holiday falls in the window.

Alternate Saturdays, half-day Saturdays and rotating shift rosters each need their own calculation. A generic holiday example will not match your schedule.

What we tell our travellers in this situation is simple. Pull up your actual shift roster for the month, mark every working day inside your planned window, and count those. Only then pick your dates.

How Many Extra Leave Days Should You Keep for Winter Spiti?

How Many Leave Days Do You Need for a 9-Day Winter Spiti Trip in 2026-27?

This is the part most leave calculators skip. There are two kinds of leave you should think about.

Scheduled leave is what the planned trip needs. Contingency leave is what you keep in your pocket in case the mountains change the plan.

Our own Winter Spiti itinerary for 7, 8 and 9 days recommends keeping one or two extra buffer days where possible.

These buffer days sit outside your nine-day trip. They are not extra sightseeing days. If the trip runs on time, you may never use them.

Why keep them at all? Snowfall, ice, landslides or traffic disruption can slow down or stop the return drive through Kinnaur. When that happens, nobody can drive you out faster safely.

The Friday evening to Saturday morning layout helps here. You get Sunday as a recovery day or a small delay cushion. But a Sunday cushion does not guarantee you will be at your desk on Monday.

So you have three realistic choices.

You can apply for five leave days and accept a thin margin. This works if your manager is relaxed about an occasional delay.

You can plan for six leave days, keeping the next Monday as soft leave. This gives you some breathing room without blocking a full week.

Or you can block seven leave days, with Monday and Tuesday after the trip held as contingency. This suits people with strict offices or anyone coming from far outside Delhi.

You do not have to use the extra days. But talk to your employer about them before the trip, not from a snowbound road with patchy signals.

And be honest with yourself: even two or three buffer days cannot promise anything if a road stays closed for longer. They lower the risk. They do not remove it.

If you want help matching your leave dates to a realistic buffer, send us your available dates and we will tell you honestly whether a nine-day plan fits.

How Does a Real 9-Day Winter Spiti Tour Fit Around Office Hours?

How Does a Real 9-Day Winter Spiti Tour Fit Around Office Hours?

Let us use our Best Selling Winter Spiti Valley Group Tour as a real example, since it was built around this exact problem.

The published itinerary starts with a Friday evening departure from Delhi. You travel overnight to Shimla in a Volvo. The trip ends with an arrival in Delhi on the following Saturday morning.

We sell it as 9 days and 8 nights. That covers six nights in stays and two nights on overnight Volvo journeys.

For a Monday to Friday employee, this layout means you work the first Friday, take Monday to Friday of the next week off, and land back home on Saturday morning. That is five leave days.

Here is the honest part

Day 9 is mainly your arrival day. You step off the bus in Delhi in the morning. It is not a ninth full day of sightseeing, so do not expect it to be.

Batch dates, pickup times, overnight transfers and arrival times can change. Before you apply for leave, confirm your specific departure date, pickup point and expected arrival with us in writing.

What Does a Realistic 9-Day Winter Spiti Itinerary Include?

What Does a Realistic 9-Day Winter Spiti Itinerary Include?

We keep this short, because the leave count matters more here than the sightseeing list.

A 9-day Winter Spiti itinerary from Delhi goes up through Shimla and Kinnaur, reaches Tabo and Kaza, spends time on whatever local sightseeing the roads allow, and then comes back through Kinnaur.

The opening days go into travelling from Delhi into Himachal and climbing slowly through Kinnaur. That slow climb also helps your body adjust to the altitude.

The middle of the trip covers Tabo, Kaza and nearby monasteries and villages, depending on what the roads allow that week.

The last days go into the drive back through Kinnaur and Shimla, and then the overnight journey to Delhi.

If you want the full day-wise breakdown, our itinerary guide linked above covers 7, 8 and 9 day versions in detail.

If you live closer to Himachal, you might start from Shimla instead. Our Shimla tour packages page shows what a Shimla start looks like.

A Shimla start can change the number of transfer days. But your leave count still depends on when you leave home and when you get back, not on where the tour officially begins.

Why Must You Plan the Winter Spiti Route Through Shimla and Kinnaur?

Why Must You Plan the Winter Spiti Route Through Shimla and Kinnaur?

In winter, the normal way into Kaza runs through Shimla and Kinnaur, and you come back along the same road. There is no loop.

The Manali to Kaza route via Kunzum Pass is seasonal. You cannot count on it in December, January or February.

To show how long that closure can last: on 20 May 2026, a news report said the Kunzum route reopened only for limited light 4x4 movement, after staying blocked for more than six months through winter 2025-26.

That date only tells you what happened last season. Nobody can promise exact closing or reopening dates for winter 2026-27.

This is also why Chandratal does not belong in a normal peak-winter itinerary. The lake sits on the Kunzum side, and that approach stays shut through the deep winter.

Here is our safety and scam warning

If anyone sells you a December or January Spiti trip that reaches Kaza through Manali and the Atal Tunnel, or includes a Chandratal night, skip that booking. Those plans do not match how winter roads work.

Even on the Kinnaur side, visits to Chitkul, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komic or similar high villages depend on that day's local road check. Treat them as possible, never promised.

For your leave plan, this matters directly. A one-road route means one blocked stretch can hold up your entire return, and that pushes back your office date. If you want to spend more time in the lower valley, our Kinnaur tour packages give you an idea of what that corridor looks like.

Can You Safely Return to Work on Monday After Winter Spiti?

Can You Safely Return to Work on Monday After Winter Spiti?

Reaching home and being ready for work are not the same thing. After a winter mountain trip and an overnight bus, most people need a proper sleep.

If you arrive in Delhi on Saturday morning, Sunday becomes your recovery day. You sleep, wash clothes, buy groceries and get your head back into work mode.

But a road delay can eat that Sunday. If the return runs a day late, you reach Delhi on Sunday instead and walk into the office tired on Monday.

Here is a money tip that saves real cash

Do not book a tight, non-refundable train or flight home from Delhi on Saturday. If the bus runs late, you lose the ticket. Book flexible, or book for Sunday.

And here is a timing tip that changes the whole return. Keep Saturday afternoon empty after you land. No family lunch, no errands. That single free half-day decides whether Monday feels fine or awful.

Before boarding the overnight Volvo from Shimla, grab a hot cup of chai at a nearby tea stall or café, depending on your confirmed boarding point and departure time. It is a simple way to warm up and relax before the long overnight journey to Delhi.

Do not plan to "just work from Kaza" if you get stuck. Mobile and internet connections in high-altitude Spiti can be patchy, and the signal depends on where you are, your provider and the weather. You cannot count on it for a critical meeting or deadline.

If you are travelling alone, especially as a woman, read our guide on Spiti safety for solo female travellers. It covers the practical side of being on your own in the valley.

What Road and Permit Checks Should You Make Before Booking Leave?

No blog post can tell you whether a road will be open on a future date. That includes this one. You need to check close to departure.

The Lahaul and Spiti district administration runs a road-status page. But the update date displayed on it reads 14 May 2024. Do not treat it as live information for this winter.

Many travellers open that page, see "open" next to a road, and assume it is current. Check the date on any status page before you trust it.

The May 2026 news report about Kunzum is also history now. It tells you the pattern, not the current situation.

So check three things just before you leave: the latest district administration notices, current road and weather advisories, and a message to your local operator.

On permits, Himachal Tourism says Indian citizens do not usually need an Inner Line Permit to enter Spiti.

Foreign tourists travelling on the protected Shimla to Kinnaur border corridor do need an Inner Line Permit. If you have a foreign friend in the group, check the current process well before booking leave.

Separately, the official e-Aagman portal from the Himachal government handles vehicle e-passes and e-tickets for travel within Lahaul and Spiti. Check the fee, whether it applies to your vehicle and route, and how long processing takes.

These checks are part of leave planning. One missing pass or one closed stretch can break a schedule that only had five leave days and no margin.

How Should You Request Leave from Your Manager?

Ask early, keep it simple, and be upfront about the winter risk. Managers usually react better to a clear plan than to a surprise call from the mountains.

Here is one way to phrase it.

"I'd like to take leave from Monday to Friday next month and combine it with the weekends on both sides for a nine-day personal trip to Spiti. I'll leave after work on Friday and I'm back on Saturday. I'll hand over my open tasks before I go. Since it's a winter mountain route, could we agree now on what happens if the road delays my return by a day or two?"

That last line does most of the work. It shows you have thought about the risk and gives your manager a chance to plan around it.

If your plan counts on Christmas or Republic Day, confirm in the same conversation that your company observes that holiday.

Finally, make sure the dates on your approved leave match your actual departure and return. If the batch date shifts, update your leave request too.

Can Travel Coffee Help Match a Winter Spiti Trip to Your Leave Balance?

We are a Shimla-based travel company, and we plan Himachal and Winter Spiti trips through the Shimla and Kinnaur route every winter season.

When we plan Winter Spiti trips for working professionals, the first question we ask is not "where do you want to go?" It is "how many days of leave do you actually have?"

You can share your available leave, the city you are starting from, your preferred dates and how many buffer days you can keep. We will work out whether a group batch fits or whether a customised plan makes more sense.

You can browse our Winter Spiti tour packages to see the group tours and winter-specific options we run.

We will not promise that a tour fits your leave until we check the actual departure dates and logistics against your calendar. Some months the dates line up perfectly. Some months they do not.

The Bottom Line on Leave Days for Winter Spiti

So, how many leave days do you need for a 9-day Winter Spiti trip? For most Monday to Friday employees, five, if you place the trip between two weekends.

With Christmas 2026 or Republic Day 2027 inside your window, and an employer who observes it, you can bring that down to four.

A six-day office week pushes it up to seven. A Monday start pushes it to seven too, so choose your departure day carefully.

Then add the part nobody likes to think about. Keep one to three buffer days available if your office allows it, because winter roads decide your return date, not your calendar.

Pick the dates, count the weekdays, check your holiday list, talk to your manager, and confirm road status close to departure. Do those five things and the leave side of Winter Spiti becomes the easy part.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many leave days are required for a nine-day Winter Spiti trip?

For a Monday to Friday employee, five leave days. You take one working week off and use the weekends on both sides.

Can I complete a nine-day Winter Spiti trip using just five leave days?

Yes, with a Saturday start or a Friday evening start after work. Confirm your pickup time and return arrival before applying for leave.

Does leaving Delhi on Friday night save an office leave day?

Yes, but only if you finish your full working day before departure. If you need Friday afternoon to reach the pickup, count it as leave.

Can Christmas 2026 or Republic Day 2027 reduce my leave days to four?

Yes. Christmas falls on Friday, 25 December 2026, and Republic Day on Tuesday, 26 January 2027. Your employer must observe the holiday for this to work.

Do weekends count as leave during a nine-day tour?

Not for a Monday to Friday employee. Your trip counts calendar days, but your employer only counts scheduled working days as leave.

What if my office operates six days a week?

A Saturday to following Sunday trip then covers seven working days, assuming both Saturdays are regular working days. Check your roster for alternate Saturdays.

How many extra weather buffer days should I reserve for Winter Spiti?

We suggest one or two where possible. Some guides suggest two or three. Neither guarantees an on-time return during a long road closure.

Is nine days enough for Winter Spiti from Delhi?

Nine days works as a practical baseline. How much you see depends on winter road conditions and which villages are reachable that week.

Does starting from Shimla reduce the leave I need?

It can shorten transfer time. But your leave still has to cover travel from home to Shimla and back.

Can I work remotely from Kaza during an unexpected delay?

Do not count on it. Connectivity in high-altitude Spiti can be patchy and depends on location, provider and weather.

Is the Manali-to-Kaza road open for Winter Spiti trips?

Not normally. Kunzum Pass closes seasonally, so winter trips go in and out through Shimla and Kinnaur.

What should I do if snowfall delays my return to office?

Stay put and let the road clear safely. Inform your employer as soon as you get signal and use your agreed contingency leave.
