Sonamarg in February 2027: Snowfall, Weather, Things to Do and Is It Worth the Trip?

Kashmir15 minutes read
Sonamarg in February

Most people who search for Sonamarg in February want one answer first. Will your Srinagar taxi actually reach Sonamarg, or will you end up turning back at Gagangir?

For February 2027, the answer looks better than it did a few years ago. The new tunnel changed winter access, but February is still deep winter.

This guide by Travel Coffee covers road reality, February weather, what you can actually do in the snow, what stays shut, what you will spend, and whether the day suits your group.

Quick Answer: Can You Visit Sonamarg in February 2027?

Yes, on most clear days you can drive from Srinagar to Sonamarg in February, because the Z-Morh Tunnel now bypasses the stretch that used to shut every winter.

Expect deep snow, sub zero nights and a short activity list: snow play, sledging and photography close to town.

Zero Point, Zojila Pass and the Thajiwas Glacier walk stay out of reach in winter.

Heavy snowfall can still pause traffic, so keep one flexible day in your Kashmir plan.

For most travellers, a day trip from Srinagar works better than an overnight stay.

What Most Tourists Get Wrong About Sonamarg in February

What Most Tourists Get Wrong About Sonamarg in February

The biggest mistake we see is simple. People picture summer Sonamarg with extra snow: the glacier walk, a pony ride to Thajiwas, and a jeep up to Zero Point.

February does not work that way. Snow blocks the Thajiwas Glacier trail from about November to April, and snow also shuts Zero Point and the Zoji La approach road from about November to April or May.

So what do you actually get? A snow covered meadow town, a white valley along the Sindh river, and a few hours of snow play near the road.

If you go knowing that, February can give you a lovely, quiet day. If you go expecting the July brochure, you will feel short changed.

Our team recommends planning Sonamarg as one piece of a wider winter trip rather than the main event. If you want help fitting it into the right day, our Kashmir tour packages give you a starting point we can customise.

How the Z-Morh Tunnel Changed Sonamarg Winter Access

How the Z-Morh Tunnel Changed Sonamarg Winter Access

What the Sonamarg Z-Morh Tunnel Actually Does

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel project in Sonamarg on 13 January 2025. The tunnel runs about 6.5 km through the mountain near Gagangir.

Its job is to keep the Sonamarg resort reachable through the year, even in harsh winter weather. Officials now also call it the Sonamarg Tunnel.

The tunnel cuts the Gagangir to Sonamarg drive to roughly 20 to 25 minutes and bypasses the old Z-shaped road that avalanches kept hitting every winter.

To understand the difference, look at the old pattern. In 2020, the Gagangir to Sonamarg stretch reopened only after nearly four months of winter closure, because heavy snow buried a 12 km section of the highway.

What the Tunnel Does Not Fix

The tunnel handles one dangerous stretch. It does not stop snow from falling on the open road before and after it.

On 27 February 2025, Sonamarg got more than a foot of fresh snow, and authorities shut the Srinagar to Leh highway for a while. That is a real February scenario, tunnel or no tunnel.

Outside the tunnel, the road can carry ice patches early in the morning, so chains or all season tyres make sense between December and February.

Authorities can also restrict which vehicles go up. In January 2024, after snowfall left the road slippery and frosted, an advisory allowed only 4x4 vehicles and vehicles with anti-skid chains between Gagangir and Sonamarg.

That was before the tunnel opened, but expect similar rules after heavy snow.

Sonamarg Winter Road Status: How to Check Before You Leave

The J&K Traffic Police issue daily traffic plans in winter, and these decide your day. Their plan for 1 February 2026 allowed light vehicles from Srinagar towards Sonamarg only between 11 AM and 3 PM, subject to fair weather and clearance from the Border Roads Organisation.

Treat that as an example, not a fixed 2027 rule. Timings for February 2027 can differ.

Here is an insider tip most guides skip: Ask your driver to check the next day’s traffic plan the evening before, not on the morning you leave. If you know the window in advance, you can plan breakfast, start time and return time around it.

Sonamarg February Weather: What the Temperature Really Feels Like

Sonamarg February Weather: What the Temperature Really Feels Like

Sonamarg Temperature in February

Sonamarg is far colder than Srinagar in February. Long term climate data puts Sonamarg’s average February daytime maximum at minus 3.4°C and its average night minimum at minus 12.5°C.

Other travel sources show slightly milder daytime figures, so read these as a guide rather than a promise. A sunny noon can feel pleasant. Shade and wind feel brutal.

Cold snaps go lower. After one fresh spell of snow, Sonamarg recorded minus 15.1°C on 2 February.

For comparison, Srinagar in February usually sees days of about 5 to 10°C and nights of about minus 3 to 1°C. You will feel the drop the moment you step out of the car.

Sonamarg Snowfall in February

February averages about 98 mm of precipitation in Sonamarg, and at these temperatures much of it falls as snow.

In practice, you will almost always find snow on the ground. Fresh snowfall on the day you visit is a different matter, and nobody can promise it.

What we tell our travellers is this: plan for snow cover, enjoy fresh snowfall if it comes, and never build the whole trip around catching it.

Sonamarg January vs February

January is the harsher month on paper. The average January maximum sits at minus 7.4°C, about four degrees colder than February.

By February, the worst cold of Chillai Kalan has passed, and the Kashmir valley feels much quieter than over Christmas and New Year.

January 2026 also showed the risk clearly. An avalanche hit the Sonamarg resort area at 10:12 PM on 27 January 2026, though nobody lost their life.

So February usually gives you slightly kinder temperatures with deep, settled snow. It does not remove avalanche or road risk.

Things to Do in Sonamarg in February

Things to Do in Sonamarg in February

Snow Play and Sledging Near Thajiwas Base

This is the main event in winter. You walk into deep snow, throw snowballs, take photos and ride a wooden sledge pulled by local operators.

One recent guide lists sledge rides at the Thajiwas base area at about ₹400 to ₹700 per sledge, covering 500 to 700 metres. Treat this as a rough figure.

Fix the price and the distance before you sit down. Ask whether the price covers one way or a round trip, because pullers often quote one and mean the other.

Thajiwas Glacier in February: What Changes in Winter

In summer, Thajiwas is the classic walk or pony ride from Sonamarg. In February, snow blocks the trail, so the glacier itself is off the table.

The Thajiwas area charges no entry fee; you only pay for transport and optional extras like ponies or sledges.

Pony round trips usually cost ₹700 to ₹1,500 per person, depending on the operator and season. In February, check what route the pony will actually take, since the glacier route stays snowbound.

If anyone offers to take you “to the glacier” in February, ask them to show you the exact point on the snow. You will likely reach the base area and come back.

Ice Skating and Winter Sports Events

Sonamarg is slowly building a winter sports scene. The Sonamarg Development Authority built an ice skating rink in the run up to the tunnel opening.

In February 2026, Sonamarg hosted its first Snow Sports Festival, with snow football, kabaddi and tug of war, ahead of the Khelo India Winter Games.

Do not count on a festival or open rink for your exact dates in 2027. Events change every season.

Also, Sonamarg is not Gulmarg for skiing. Its first skiing course in February 2025 targeted schoolboys from across the Kashmir division, not tourist rentals. If skiing matters to you, plan it in Gulmarg.

The Drive Through Kangan and Gund

Half the joy of this day is the road itself. You pass Kangan and Gund, quiet settlements along the Sindh river, on the way from Srinagar.

In February, snow lines the riverbanks and village roofs. Ask your driver for one or two short photo stops in daylight, rather than rushing straight to the snow point.

Skip This: Zero Point Sonamarg in February

Zero Point is the one stop you should drop from your February list. It lies a few kilometres past the Zojila top towards Kargil, about 27 km from Sonamarg.

The Z-Morh Tunnel gives year round access only up to Sonamarg; beyond that, the road to Leh over Zojila stays shut in winter.

So no taxi, union jeep or package can honestly take you to Zero Point in February. Spend that money and time on Gulmarg or a slower Srinagar day instead.

Sonamarg Day Trip from Srinagar or Overnight Stay?

Sonamarg Day Trip from Srinagar or Overnight Stay?

Distance and Drive Time from Srinagar

Sonamarg sits about 80 to 85 km from Srinagar, and the drive takes roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours one way depending on traffic and weather. Some rate cards list the route at 87 km.

In February, plan for the longer end of that range. Snow, slow trucks and checkpoints add time.

What We Tell Our Travellers

Our team recommends a day trip for most first time visitors. You get the snow, you avoid a night at minus 10°C or colder, and you sleep back in Srinagar where services feel more reliable.

There is a real reason behind this advice. Even local stakeholders in Sonamarg have said publicly that they hope power, water and other basic services hold up through the winter.

The January 2026 avalanche hit at night. A day trip keeps you away from the resort area during the hours when you can least react.

When an Overnight Stay Makes Sense

Stay overnight only if you have a confirmed, heated room, a flexible return date, and a clear weather forecast. Photographers who want sunrise on the snow sometimes choose this.

Confirm heating, hot water and power backup in writing before you pay. Do not assume a property runs at full service in February.

A Simple Sonamarg February Itinerary

A Simple Sonamarg February Itinerary

The One Day Plan from Srinagar

Have a proper breakfast in Srinagar and leave once your driver confirms the day’s traffic window. You lose nothing by skipping a 6 AM start, because early morning ice makes the road slower anyway.

Here is the timing tip that changes the day. Aim to reach Sonamarg by late morning, give yourself two to three hours in the snow, and start back by 3 PM.

On the Feb 2026 traffic plan, that matched the 11 AM to 3 PM light vehicle window, and it gets you past the colder, darker evening stretch.

Spend the middle of the day on snow play, a sledge ride and kahwa. Skip the urge to “do everything”, since there is not much else to do in February.

Where Sonamarg Fits in a Wider Kashmir Winter Trip

In a five or six day Kashmir trip, keep Srinagar as your base. Do Gulmarg one day, Sonamarg another, and add Pahalgam if you have time.

In February, Gulmarg’s slopes and Gondola usually run (Phase 2 depends on weather), and Pahalgam and Srinagar sightseeing stay open.

Never place Sonamarg on your last full day. If snow shuts the road, you need a spare day to try again, not a flight to catch.

Sonamarg February Trip Cost in 2027

Sonamarg February Trip Cost in 2027

Taxi from Srinagar to Sonamarg

Recent rate cards show a private sedan return trip from Srinagar to Sonamarg at about ₹3,800 to ₹5,500, and an SUV at about ₹5,500 to ₹7,500. In snow season, ask for an SUV with chains.

These are 2026 figures. Expect some change for February 2027.

Union Taxi Charges Inside Sonamarg

This is the insider tip that saves budget shocks. Your Srinagar taxi drops you at the Sonamarg taxi stand but cannot run the local sightseeing routes; for those you must hire a local union taxi.

Union cab charges in Sonamarg usually run about ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 on top of your Srinagar taxi. Before you pay, ask exactly which point the cab will reach in February snow.

Snow Activities

Budget about ₹400 to ₹700 per sledge and ₹700 to ₹1,500 per person if you take a pony, based on the 2026 rates above. Carry cash, since card payments and the network both feel unreliable in heavy snow.

Local Money Saving Tip

If you travel solo or as a couple, look at shared Sumos. A shared Sumo seat between Srinagar and Sonamarg costs about ₹300 to ₹500, far less than a private car.

The catch: shared vehicles leave when they fill up and follow their own return time. If you take one, plan to return on an earlier vehicle rather than risk a late evening ride.

For groups of four or five, a single SUV split between you usually works out cheaper and safer than separate cars.

Safety, Avalanche Warnings and Scams in Sonamarg in February

Safety, Avalanche Warnings and Scams in Sonamarg in February

Take Avalanche Warnings Seriously

Avalanches are the real winter danger here, not the snow play. On 23 January 2026, officials warned of high danger avalanches above 2,300 metres in Ganderbal district, where Sonamarg lies.

After the January 2026 avalanche, Ganderbal Police told tourists, locals and transporters to avoid visiting or stopping in avalanche prone areas, warning that the risk remained high.

In practice, stay on flat, busy snow near the road. Do not climb slopes for photos, do not wander off with a stranger offering a “secret snow point”, and leave the area if officials ask you to.

The Zero Point Scam to Avoid

Here is the warning we give everyone. In summer, the Sonamarg Taxi Union runs Zero Point and Zojila tours at about ₹4,500 to ₹6,500.

If anyone quotes you a Zero Point trip in February, walk away. The pass stays shut, so you would pay summer money for a short drive to wherever the snow stops.

Apply the same test to “glacier” pony rides. Ask where the ride ends before any money changes hands.

Families, Kids and Elderly Travellers

Sonamarg in February suits families with older children who handle cold well. Very young kids and elderly members with heart or breathing problems can struggle with minus 10°C air and long hours in a car.

Keep children’s gloves and socks dry, and come back to the car every hour to warm up. Many of the same snow safety rules apply across the Himalayas; our family snow safety guide for kids covers them in more detail.

Food and Chai in Sonamarg in Winter

Food and Chai in Sonamarg in Winter

Fewer places stay open in February than in summer, so lower your food expectations. Simple meals, Maggi and tea are your likely options.

Our one recommendation: get a hot cup of kahwa at the tea stalls near the Sonamarg main market taxi stand. Saffron and almond kahwa warms your hands better than any glove.

A second insider tip: carry a flask of tea and some dry fruit from Srinagar. If you get stuck in a slow convoy near Gund, you will thank yourself.

Sonamarg Winter Packing List for February

Sonamarg Winter Packing List for February

Layering matters more than one heavy jacket. Wear a thermal base, a fleece or sweater, and a windproof, waterproof outer jacket on top.

Your feet need the most care. Wear waterproof boots with real grip, carry two spare pairs of woollen socks, and skip sports shoes, which soak through within minutes in deep snow.

Add waterproof gloves, a warm cap that covers your ears, and a muffler or neck gaiter. You can rent gumboots and snow jackets near the snow points in Kashmir, but check the condition before paying.

Sunglasses and sunscreen sound odd in winter, but snow glare hurts your eyes on a clear day. Carry lip balm, moisturiser and a small power bank, since cold drains phone batteries fast.

Pack cash in small notes, basic medicines for headache and cold, and a spare change of socks and gloves in a separate bag.

Is Sonamarg Worth Visiting in February?

Who Will Love It

If you have never seen deep snow, February Sonamarg gives you a proper white landscape within a day’s drive of Srinagar. Couples and families who enjoy simple snow play often love it.

It also feels calmer than summer. Sonamarg drew over 800,000 tourists in 2024, and most of that crowd comes outside deep winter.

Who Should Skip It

Here is our honest take: in February, Sonamarg gives you about half a day of activity. If you want skiing, gondola rides or a full day of snow adventure, Gulmarg serves you better, since Gulmarg usually has its deepest snow of the season in February.

Skip Sonamarg in February if you only have two or three days in Kashmir, if anyone in your group handles cold badly, or if you cannot keep a buffer day.

Our Recommendation

What we tell our travellers is simple. Go to Sonamarg in February if your trip has five days or more, if you treat it as a snow play day, and if you accept that the weather decides the final call.

If you are weighing Kashmir against a Himachal snow trip, compare it with our Manali packages before you book flights.
