Kufri

Kufri is the half day trip that every Shimla itinerary includes, and most travellers have a mixed experience because nobody told them what to actually expect. Here is the honest version.

It is a small hill town on the Hindustan Tibet Road (NH 5), sitting at roughly 2,600 to 2,700 metres, which makes it about 400 to 500 metres higher than Shimla. That altitude difference matters. Kufri is colder, gets snow more reliably in winter, and the air feels noticeably thinner when you walk uphill. The name comes from "kufr," which means lake in the local language, though there is no visible lake today.

What most people do in Kufri comes down to three main activities. Ride a pony or horse up to a viewpoint or Mahasu Peak. Visit the Himalayan Nature Park, commonly called the Kufri Zoo. Or, if travelling with children, spend time at Kufri Fun World, the amusement park near the top. In winter, add snow play to that list. That is genuinely all there is. If you go in expecting a full day destination, you will feel underwhelmed. If you go in expecting a pleasant half day outing from Shimla with a nice walk and a change of altitude, you will enjoy it.

Here is the thing nobody writes about clearly enough. The moment your taxi enters the Kufri area, you will be approached by local operators and pony handlers trying to sell you a "Kufri package." They will tell you that your vehicle cannot go further, that you need to take their jeep or pony, and the prices they quote at the roadside are usually two to three times what the activity actually costs. This is not a scam in the criminal sense, it is just aggressive tourism hustling, and it has earned Kufri some of the most negative reviews of any Shimla area attraction. The fix is simple: know what you want to do before you arrive, agree on prices clearly before starting, and do not feel pressured into activities you did not plan for. Going early in the morning or on a weekday helps significantly.

The Himalayan Nature Park is the best reason to visit Kufri if you are not here for snow. Spread over 90 hectares of deodar forest at roughly 2,350 to 2,730 metres, the park was established in 1992 on the site of a former musk deer research farm. It houses Himalayan wildlife including black bears, brown bears, leopards, barking deer, musk deer, goral, and the Himalayan monal, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh. The enclosures are open and forest based, not concrete cages, and the walk through the park is genuinely pleasant. Budget about 1.5 to 2 hours. Entry is approximately Rs 50 for adults and Rs 20 to 25 for children, with an extra charge for cameras, as of recent reports. The park is closed on Tuesdays.

Kufri Fun World sits near the top of the area at about 2,800 metres and calls itself one of the highest amusement parks in the world. It has a go kart track, zip line, sky swing, bumper cars, and a haunted house. The rides are basic compared to a city amusement park, but the views from the go kart track are absurd, you are karting with the Himalayan ridgeline behind you. Kids enjoy it. Set your expectations for a modest hill station adventure park, not a massive theme park. Base entry fees start around Rs 100 to 200, with individual rides and combo packages charged separately. Operations can vary or pause on Mondays and during poor weather. Confirm locally before heading up.

Mahasu Peak is the highest point in the Kufri area and worth the short trek or pony ride if the sky is clear. On a good day, you can see the Badrinath and Kedarnath ranges from the top. There is a small Nag Devta temple at the peak. The walk takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the main Kufri area, or you can take a pony.

Who Kufri suits well: families with children who want a day out from Shimla, anyone visiting Shimla in winter who wants to see snow without driving to Narkanda, and first time Shimla visitors who want to tick off the classic itinerary. Who should reconsider: solo travellers looking for solitude (the tourist crowd and touts make that difficult), travellers who get irritated by aggressive hawking, and anyone expecting a major standalone destination. Kufri is an add on to a Shimla trip, not a destination in itself.
