Kufri is usually the most convenient snow point near Shimla because it is easy to reach and offers winter activities when snow conditions are suitable. However, travellers may need to continue towards Fagu or Narkanda when Kufri has little or no snow.
This guide by Travel Coffee compares Kufri, Fagu, Narkanda and other nearby places where you may find snow. Since snowfall changes with weather and altitude, check the latest forecast and local road conditions before planning your day trip.
Kufri is the nearest mainstream snow point near Shimla, about 20 km from the city. Choose Fagu if you want quieter scenery.
Choose Narkanda if you can travel farther in search of deeper or longer lasting snow. Natural snowfall never comes with a guarantee, so check live snow and road conditions before leaving.
If snow forms the main purpose of your holiday, keep your plan flexible. Our Shimla team often changes the day route after checking where clean snow remains on the ground.
You can also compare our Shimla tour packages if you need help arranging your stay, local vehicle and winter route.

The Shimla District administration lists Kufri about 20 km from Shimla. This makes it the easiest mainstream choice for families and first time travellers staying in the city.
You may also see distances of 16 km, 17 km or 18 km online. These figures do not always measure the same location.
Himachal Tourism lists Himalayan Nature Park at 16 km from Shimla and Kufri Fun World at 18 km. Other websites may measure the road up to Kufri town, Mahasu slopes or a local vehicle stopping point.
“Kufri snow point” does not identify one permanent marked spot. Depending on where the snow has settled, local drivers may use the phrase for roadside snow, the Mahasu side or an activity area.
This difference matters because a photograph from the upper slopes does not prove that snow remains near the main road. Ask where you will actually stop and how much walking or local transport the visit requires.
Frequent HRTC buses leave for Kufri from Lakkar Bazaar. You can also hire a taxi from Shimla, but no reliable fixed taxi fare for 2026 has been verified.
Taxi fares vary by pickup point, vehicle type, road conditions and waiting time, so confirm the current rate and inclusions before booking.
The drive can take much longer during active snowfall, traffic jams and the Christmas or New Year rush. A short road on the map can become a slow journey when vehicles stop near every snowy roadside patch.
In our experience, the biggest mistake tourists make is deciding that Kufri must have snow simply because Shimla feels cold. Temperature, recent western disturbances, sunlight and elevation all affect whether snow remains accessible.
The Ridge, Jakhoo and other elevated parts of Shimla can receive fresh snowfall. The city looks beautiful during an active spell, especially before traffic and footfall disturb the fresh layer.
Snow inside Shimla town remains less dependable than snow at higher places. It can melt quickly, turn muddy or get cleared from busy roads and walking areas.
Do not rely only on Mall Road or The Ridge if touching snow forms the main purpose of your trip. Keep Kufri, Fagu or Narkanda as an option after checking current conditions.
What we tell our travellers is simple. First ask whether snow is falling, then ask whether clean snow remains on the ground, and finally confirm whether the road is open.

Kufri makes the most sense when you stay in Shimla and want an easy snow outing. Families can visit without committing to the much longer journey towards Narkanda.
Snow play, photography, sledging and beginner winter activities may run when enough snow has settled. Their operation depends on weather, ground conditions and local arrangements.
Himachal Tourism describes Kufri as one of India’s older skiing locations and refers to skiing on the Mahasu Peak slopes. The Shimla District tourism page also mentions a winter sports festival in February.
You can combine snow time with Himalayan Nature Park or other Kufri attractions. Confirm the latest entry fees, opening hours and operating status before planning your full day around the Himalayan Nature Park or other Kufri attractions.
Kufri can feel highly commercial during busy winter weekends. Traffic, activity sellers and horse rides may reduce the peaceful mountain experience some travellers expect.
If you can reach clean roadside snow safely, you do not need to pay for every activity. This remains one of the easiest ways to save money on a family snow day.
Skip a horse ride or paid activity when the seller cannot explain the complete route, duration and final price. Snow alone does not make an unclear deal good value.
Fagu stands at an elevation of 2,500 metres and takes about 45 minutes by road from Shimla under normal conditions.
Fagu suits couples, photographers and travellers who prefer open mountain scenery over the busy activity areas around Kufri. It often feels slower and less commercial.
The village and surrounding slopes can look beautiful after snowfall, but Fagu does not always have snow. Its higher setting cannot replace a live condition check.
Fagu may work well after Kufri on the same outing. You can assess the snow around Kufri first and then continue towards quieter viewpoints if the road remains open.
For a simple chai break, ask your driver to stop at a clean local tea shop in Fagu village market and confirm that it is open before relying on it during a winter outing.
Our team recommends carrying water and a snack even if you plan a tea stop. Snowfall, traffic or a temporary closure can delay your return.
Mashobra lies about 12 km from Shimla, according to Himachal Tourism. Chharabra sits on the same broader side of the city towards Kufri.
Both areas can look lovely after a fresh snow spell covers the forests and roadsides. They suit a quiet drive, photography and a slower winter break.
Treat Mashobra and Chharabra as scenic alternatives, not dependable snow points. Sunlight, traffic and rising temperatures can clear accessible snow quickly.
Choose Mashobra after recent snowfall and when you do not want to join the main Kufri crowd. If no fresh spell has arrived, travelling farther may still become necessary.
Narkanda lies about 60 to 65 km from Shimla. The Shimla District administration uses a distance of about 60 km, while Himachal Tourism uses 65 km.
This range gives you a more honest planning figure than one absolute number. Your starting point inside Shimla also changes the distance.
Narkanda stands at an elevation of 2,708 metres. The official tourism page identifies it as an established skiing destination and says snow starts covering the area in December.
The same page describes skiing instruction from January to March. Himachal Tourism also says visitors can find ski instruction and equipment hire in Narkanda, though you should confirm current operation and snow depth.
A ski and snowboard championship took place in Narkanda in 2026. Authorities also announced a ₹50 lakh portable lift and a ₹10 lakh access gate for the Dhumri ski slope.
These announcements do not confirm that either project has finished or opened. Check the current status before planning around those facilities.
Narkanda usually offers a better search area for retained snow because of its elevation and colder surroundings. It still cannot guarantee natural snow for your dates.
Treat Narkanda as a full day destination or stay overnight. Do not add it casually after spending half the day in Kufri.
In our experience, families enjoy Narkanda more when they leave enough time for weather delays, meals and daylight. A rushed return after dark can cancel out the benefit of travelling farther.
Hatu Peak rises to about 3,400 metres and lies roughly 8 km from Narkanda. A motorable road connects the peak, but winter access changes with snow, ice and local restrictions.
Never assume that a normal car can reach Hatu Peak during winter. A dry road in Narkanda town does not prove that the upper road remains safe.
Confirm the latest road access, vehicle restrictions, tyre-chain requirements and safe stopping point with local authorities, your hotel and an experienced driver before travelling.
Hatu Peak suits experienced winter travellers who accept that they may need to turn back. Families with small children and senior travellers should avoid making it essential to the day.
Travellers continuing beyond Narkanda can compare our Kinnaur tour packages for routes towards the wider Hindustan Tibet Road region. Winter road conditions need separate checking for every stage.

Choose Kufri if you have half a day or one day, especially on your first Shimla trip. Its shorter distance makes it easier for families and senior travellers.
Kufri also gives you more activity options when snow conditions support them. The disadvantage is heavier traffic and a more commercial atmosphere during peak winter dates.
Choose Fagu when quiet scenery matters more than skiing or busy snow activities. It works well as a continuation of a Kufri drive.
Fagu may feel calmer, but do not assume that fewer visitors mean more snow. Confirm where snow remains before spending extra time on the road.
Choose Narkanda if you can spend longer travelling in search of retained snow and skiing conditions. Its elevation makes it a stronger winter option than depending only on Shimla town.
Snow can still melt or arrive late. Build the plan around live conditions, not an old photograph or a fixed promise from a booking seller.
Choose Mashobra when a recent spell has covered its forests and roadsides. It gives you a peaceful drive close to Shimla.
Without recent snowfall, Mashobra may offer winter scenery but no accessible snow on the ground. Keep Kufri or a farther location as your backup.

The Shimla District administration describes December and January as Shimla’s snow period. In practical trip planning, the broader snow window often runs from late December through February.
Late December can bring snowfall, but it remains unreliable. Travellers found little or no snow around Shimla in late December 2025 before later winter spells reached the area.
This example shows seasonal variation. It does not mean every December will remain dry, and it does not prove that snow will arrive on the same dates next year.
December does not automatically mean snowfall. Book the holiday for the full Shimla experience, then treat snow as weather dependent.
January usually gives you the strongest general planning window for snow near Shimla, especially after an active western disturbance.
A western disturbance can bring fresh snow, road closures and a sharp change in driving conditions. The same system that creates a beautiful snow day can also stop access to the location you planned.
During a spell on 27 January 2026, Fagu and Kufri received heavier snow than Shimla town. Some roads closed during that weather event.
This is why checking only a Shimla city forecast can mislead you. Snowfall can vary between Shimla, Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda during the same spell.
January also brings the risk of slippery roads, traffic disruption and power cuts. Heavy snowfall in January 2026 affected roads and electricity across Himachal, including Shimla district.
Snow may remain at higher places in early February, particularly after a recent January or February spell. Crowds can also feel lower than the New Year week.
Fresh snowfall grows more dependent on the active weather system as the month moves ahead. Old snow may survive in shaded patches while sunny roadside areas become bare.
Kufri holds a winter sports festival in February according to the district tourism page. Confirm the official festival dates and current activity schedule before planning your February trip around the Kufri Winter Sports Festival.
Finding natural snow near Shimla becomes unreliable in March. Shimla town, Mashobra and sunny sections around Kufri may have no accessible snow.
Narkanda or shaded high altitude places may sometimes retain snow after a recent spell. You still need live confirmation before travelling.
Check the IMD Shimla forecast and weather warnings close to your travel date. Look again on the morning of your outing because mountain weather can change overnight.
A snow icon in a mobile app does not prove that snow will settle. It may show a chance of precipitation across a wider forecast area rather than conditions at a tourist stop.
Ask whether fresh snow is falling at that moment. Then ask whether clean snow remains on the ground where tourists can safely reach it.
Finally, confirm whether the road is open for normal tourist vehicles. These three answers tell you more than a single screenshot from a weather app.
Verify the road with the district administration, police, PWD, your hotel, a local driver or our Shimla team. During active weather, check more than one local source when possible.
Our Shimla team recommends confirming conditions again before the vehicle leaves. Yesterday’s safe road can develop ice or face a temporary closure after fresh snowfall.
Treat social media videos carefully. People often repost clips that come from another location, an earlier spell or even a previous winter.
Check the upload date, location and current road access. A fresh looking video cannot replace a same morning local update.

Leave Shimla in the morning and visit Kufri first. Starting early helps you reach before the main weekend crowd builds around the busy stopping areas.
Continue towards Fagu if the road stays open and you have enough daylight. Return to Shimla before dark rather than stretching the outing with extra stops.
In our experience, families feel more comfortable keeping Kufri and Fagu together for one day. The route remains easier to adjust if snow or traffic changes the plan.
Set your departure and return times according to your hotel location, daylight, weather and current road conditions.
Treat Narkanda as the main destination of the day. Do not plan it as a quick extension after several hours in Kufri.
The official Narkanda page estimates 3 to 4 hours by private vehicle and 4 to 5 hours by bus from Shimla. Traffic, snowfall, road closures and ice can change these timings considerably.
Do not try to combine Narkanda, Hatu Peak, Kufri, Fagu and several Shimla attractions in one day. You will spend most of the daylight driving and may still miss the places that matter.
A focused Narkanda day gives you time to check the snow area, eat without rushing and return while visibility remains better.
Stay overnight in Narkanda if you travel with children, senior family members or anyone who becomes uncomfortable on long winter drives.
An overnight plan also suits skiers and photographers. You gain more daylight at the destination and avoid forcing a return after dark.
A slower plan gives the road crew time to clear a route after fresh snow. It also lets you change the next morning’s plan after checking current conditions.

Your total cost may include local transport, accommodation, meals, rented winter clothing and optional snow activities.
Current taxi fares, horse-riding charges, snow activity prices, winter clothing rentals and hotel rates vary by date and conditions, so confirm the complete cost and inclusions before booking or paying.
Ask your driver what the quoted taxi amount covers. Confirm the route, waiting period, parking arrangement and return point before leaving.
For a horse ride or snow activity, agree on the complete price, exact route and duration before starting. Do not accept an unclear per person or partial route quote.
The easiest money saving choice is to decide what you actually want from the day. If your family only wants snow play and photographs, you may not need every paid activity.
Carry gloves, waterproof shoes and suitable layers from home when possible. This can reduce the need for urgent rentals, but confirm current local rental prices before paying.

Simple snow play and photography suit most visitors. Choose a safe open patch away from moving traffic, steep edges and roofs carrying loose snow.
Sledging and beginner skiing may operate when enough snow covers the activity area. Confirm the complete price, duration, equipment and safety arrangements before paying.
Himachal Tourism describes Kufri as one of India’s older skiing locations. Snow depth and local operation still decide whether skiing runs on your travel day.
Himachal Tourism says Narkanda provides ski instruction and equipment hire. Contact the local operator before leaving Shimla because these services depend on current snow conditions.
Short snow walks can feel easier than skiing, but compacted snow can become slippery. Keep the route short and turn back before daylight or visibility drops.
If winter sports form only one part of your holiday, compare other adventure activities in Manali. Activity access changes with season and weather.
You can also review our Manali tour packages when deciding whether the Shimla or Manali side suits your wider trip.
Active snowfall can create black ice, slippery bends, poor visibility, traffic jams and temporary road closures.
Black ice may look like a wet road, especially in shaded sections. Sudden braking or turning can make a vehicle lose grip.
January 2026 snowfall caused road and utility disruption in Shimla district. Fresh snow can improve the scenery while making the drive harder at the same time.
Use an experienced local driver if you do not feel confident on icy mountain roads. Familiarity with dry hill roads does not equal experience on snow and black ice.
Avoid unnecessary night driving. Darkness makes ice, road edges and stalled traffic harder to judge.
Confirm any tyre-chain requirements, four-wheel-drive restrictions and vehicle cut-off points with local authorities on the morning of travel, as these rules depend on current road conditions.
Never accept a definite road opening promise several days in advance. Check again on the morning of travel and stay ready to turn back if local authorities stop vehicles.
Stay in Shimla if you want more restaurants, shopping and city facilities. It also works well if snow forms only one part of your holiday.
Stay in Kufri or Fagu if you want to reduce the morning drive towards the snow belt. This can help after an overnight spell, though the approach road still needs checking.
Stay in Narkanda for a slower, snow focused holiday or skiing interest. It gives you more time at the destination and reduces pressure to return to Shimla after dark.
Families and senior travellers should confirm room heating before booking. Ask whether the property has reliable vehicle access, parking and a steep walk from the road.
A hotel that looks close on a map may still require walking over an icy path. Ask the property to explain the final approach clearly.
Confirm the current hotel rate, taxes, heating charges and parking costs for your exact dates and room type before booking.

Wear thermal inner layers and add warm middle layers that you can remove indoors. A waterproof outer jacket keeps melting snow away from your clothes.
Carry waterproof gloves, a woollen cap and spare socks. Wet hands and socks can make a short snow outing uncomfortable very quickly.
Choose waterproof shoes with strong grip. Smooth soled sports shoes can slip on compacted snow and ice.
Pack sunglasses because bright snow reflects sunlight. Moisturiser and lip balm also help in cold, dry weather.
Carry your basic medicines, water, snacks and a charged power bank. Road delays can keep you away from shops longer than expected.
Pack dry clothes for children. Snow play often leaves sleeves, trousers, gloves and socks wet even when no snow is falling.
Keep important items inside a waterproof pouch. Falling snow and melted ice can damage phones, documents and charging cables.
Do not book a non refundable trip only because a weather app shows a snow icon. Forecasts can change, and predicted snowfall may not settle at the location you plan to visit.
Understand the difference between fresh snowfall and snow lying on the ground. You can watch snow fall without getting a thick layer for snow play.
The opposite can also happen. The sky may remain clear while old snow stays in shaded or higher areas.
Do not confuse distant white peaks with accessible snow. A hotel view of snowy mountains does not mean you can touch snow near the road.
Do not assume that December always brings snowfall. Late December 2025 showed how winter can start with little or no snow around Shimla before later spells arrive.
Avoid inexperienced self driving during active snowfall. A short delay costs less than a collision or getting stuck on an icy bend.
Confirm the total price, route, duration and inclusions before paying for a horse ride, sledging session or skiing lesson.
Skip unnecessary paid activities if safe, clean snow near an accessible area already gives your family the experience it wants.
Do not copy an old social media itinerary. Ask about the snow, the road and normal vehicle access on the same morning.
