Winter Spiti from Hyderabad in 2026-27: A Door-to-Door Plan for Working Travellers

Most guides to winter Spiti start in Shimla. If you are planning winter Spiti from Hyderabad, though, your trip starts at your front door and ends at your office desk.
The hardest part to plan is the bit in between: the flights, the transfer, the snow on the road and getting home on time. This plan covers all of it.
Quick Answer: How Do You Reach Winter Spiti from Hyderabad?
Fly from Hyderabad to Chandigarh or Delhi. From there, travel by road to Shimla and continue through Kinnaur, Tabo and on to Kaza.
Use the Shimla to Kinnaur road in winter. The Manali route over Kunzum Pass normally closes for the season.
For a cautious plan, we suggest 12 to 13 calendar days from Hyderabad and back, including buffer days. This is our suggested schedule, not an official trip length. How much office leave you need depends on your departure date and your work calendar.
If you would rather join a planned trip, start with our Winter Spiti tour packages.
Is Winter Spiti Possible from Hyderabad with a Full-Time Job?

Yes, but only if you plan around your leave balance and your return date, not around your sightseeing list.
Most working travellers get one thing wrong. They count leave days and forget to count calendar days. Then they plan the return as if it were a weekend trip to Goa.
Calendar Days Versus Annual Leave
Calendar days and leave days measure different things. Weekends stretch your trip without costing you any leave.
Here is a sample schedule. You fly out of Hyderabad on a Friday evening after work, and you fly back on the second Wednesday after that. Count both travel days and you get 13 calendar days.
If you work Monday to Friday, this plan uses eight weekdays of leave: five days in the first week and three in the second. That assumes no public holidays fall in that period.
A public holiday or an approved work-from-home day could reduce that count. Neither one is guaranteed, so check your office calendar before you buy any flights.
Why a Fixed Monday Return Gets Stressful
Winter roads in Himachal do not follow your office calendar. A single heavy snowfall can halt traffic and keep you in a village for an extra day or two.
On 29 January 2026, PTI reported that snowfall closed 655 roads across Himachal Pradesh, including 27 in Kinnaur. That was one day in one winter, but it shows the kind of risk you are planning around.
For this reason, we tell every working traveller to protect the return journey first and add sightseeing after that. Seeing one fewer village is a better outcome than missing your flight home.
Should You Fly from Hyderabad to Chandigarh or Delhi?

Both airports work. The right choice depends on where your driver or tour group picks you up.
Hyderabad to Chandigarh
IndiGo advertises non-stop Hyderabad to Chandigarh flights that take about two and a half hours.
Chandigarh puts you closer to Shimla than Delhi does. It suits you best if your private vehicle or tour group offers a pickup there.
Check the actual departure times, the number of daily flights and the baggage allowance for your dates. Do not assume a convenient Friday evening flight exists until you have seen it on the airline's booking page.
Hyderabad to Delhi
Air India advertises non-stop Hyderabad to Delhi flights that take about two hours and twenty minutes.
Delhi makes sense if you join a Delhi-origin winter Spiti tour that includes an overnight Volvo bus to and from Shimla.
Delhi does add a longer road or bus leg compared with joining near Chandigarh, so expect one more tiring night of travel.
Which Gateway Should a Working Traveller Pick?
Pick the airport that fits your tour's meeting point, its departure time and how reliably you can reach that pickup.
Here is the most useful tip in this guide: Get the exact meeting location and joining time in writing before you buy a non-refundable flight. Many travellers book a cheap fare first, only to find the group leaves three hours before their flight lands.
A money tip: compare the total cost of each route, not just the airfare. A cheaper Delhi flight can turn into the more expensive option once you add an extra hotel night and a transfer.
If you want to spend a night in the hills before the long drive, look at our Shimla tour packages for stay ideas.
If you are not sure which airport suits your dates, send us your travel dates, group size and preferred airport. We will compare the Chandigarh and Delhi joining options with you.
What Is the Door-to-Door Route from Hyderabad to Kaza?
Think of the journey as three legs: home to airport, airport to Shimla, and Shimla to Kaza.
From Home in Hyderabad to the Airport
Check your airline's recommended check-in time for your flight, and plan your cab to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport around it.
Pack your winter gear before you leave home. A down jacket and boots take up more space than you expect, so weigh your bag at home.
Share your flight number and expected landing time with your driver or tour coordinator. Ask them to confirm the pickup point at the arrival gate.
From Delhi or Chandigarh to Shimla
You have two choices for this leg. You can arrange your own taxi or bus, or you can use a pickup that your operator arranges.
HRTC lists bus routes that link Shimla with Delhi and with Chandigarh Airport. Check the schedule and seat availability for your exact date on the official HRTC booking site.
The fare and drive time from Chandigarh Airport to Shimla vary by vehicle and traffic.
From Shimla Through Kinnaur to Kaza
The winter road runs Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur, Reckong Peo, Nako, Tabo and Kaza.
The Lahaul and Spiti district website lists Shimla to Kaza as about 412 km and about 20 hours of driving, not counting overnight halts.
The same site calls this route almost all-weather. Almost all-weather does not mean open every day.
Do not try to drive all 20 hours in one go. Split the journey into daylight stages so your body adjusts to the altitude a little at a time.
Many travellers enjoy the Kinnaur stretch more than they expect. You can see some of our options on the Kinnaur tour packages page.
What Does a Realistic 13-Day Hyderabad to Spiti Winter Itinerary Look Like?

This is a sample private itinerary, not one of our published departures. Every day depends on the weather, road conditions, your health and confirmed transport.
Day 0, Friday: Hyderabad to Chandigarh
You fly out on Friday evening after work. This assumes you can find a suitable flight.
After landing, transfer to a hotel near the airport or in the city. If your flight runs late, stay near the airport. Do not start a mountain drive at night.
Day 1, Saturday: Chandigarh to Shimla or Narkanda
Meet your driver, check the road conditions ahead and drive up into Himachal.
Whether you stop in Shimla or push on to Narkanda depends on when you start and how the road looks. Himachal Tourism lists Shimla to Narkanda as about 65 km.
Keep this day easy. You have a long road ahead, and you will handle it better if you start rested.
Day 2, Sunday: Shimla or Narkanda to Reckong Peo or Kalpa
The road drops to Rampur and then follows the river into Kinnaur.
We tell travellers to take a proper chai break in Rampur, because the day is long and Rampur has the most food options along this stretch.
Official sources give slightly different distances for Shimla to Reckong Peo. The Shimla tourism page says 228 km, while another published guide says about 235 km. Plan for a full driving day whichever figure is right.
Book your night's stay in advance and aim to reach it in daylight. Kalpa is pleasant, but skip the detour if the drive has been slow.
Day 3, Monday: Reckong Peo to Tabo
This stage passes Nako and Sumdo. Shaded bends can hold ice all day, and a short blockage can hold up traffic for hours.
Stop at Nako only if the road and the time allow it. Your aim today is to reach Tabo safely.
Day 4, Tuesday: Tabo to Kaza
Himachal Tourism lists Tabo to Kaza as about 48 km. That is short enough to leave time for Tabo Monastery in the morning if it is open.
Reach Kaza, which sits at about 3,660 metres, and then rest. If you have a headache or feel breathless, skip the evening walk and drink water.
Days 5 and 6, Wednesday and Thursday: Kaza and Flexibility
Start with Kaza and Key Monastery if the road is open.
Kibber, Chicham, Langza, Hikkim and Komic are possible visits, depending on the weather. Ask your driver each morning which roads are passable.
Day 6 is your flexible day. Use it for rest or wait out bad weather if you need to. Do not treat it as another compulsory sightseeing day.
Day 7, Friday: Start the Return to Reckong Peo
You come back the same way you went in. Himachal Tourism lists Reckong Peo to Kaza as about 200 km, and in winter that makes for a long day.
If the road looks unsafe, stop overnight in Tabo instead, as long as you can find a room and the road is open. Then rework the remaining days.
Leave as soon as you have had breakfast. Getting through the icy shaded sections in good light makes a real difference.
Day 8, Saturday: Reckong Peo to Shimla
Drive in daylight and skip all detours if your progress has been slow. Nothing on this stretch is worth losing your buffer for.
Day 9, Sunday: Shimla to Chandigarh
Drive down to the airport city and settle in. Check your return flight and repack your bag.
Days 10 and 11, Monday and Tuesday: Protected Buffer Days
These two days protect your flight. If snow held you up in Kinnaur, these are the days you use to catch up.
If you come down on time, use them to rest near Chandigarh. Even two buffer days cannot cover a closure that lasts longer than that.
Day 12, Wednesday: Chandigarh to Hyderabad
You fly home on a confirmed flight, and you are back at your desk on Thursday.
Here is the honest summary. This plan uses eight working days of leave. Flight changes, road conditions or a longer delay could still force you to change it.

Can You Do Winter Spiti with Only Five or Six Office Leave Days?

You can, on paper. In practice, it is a gamble.
The Compressed Alternative
Fly out on Friday and return on Sunday nine days later, and you use five leave days over 10 calendar days. Return on the Monday instead, and you use six leave days over 11 calendar days.
To fit the trip into that window, you cut the buffer days and get perhaps one full day in Kaza. Most of your trip becomes driving, and one blocked road can wipe out the plan.
Five leave days cannot guarantee a complete trip from Hyderabad to Kaza and back.
When Postponing Makes More Sense
If a late return would get you into serious trouble at work, deep winter may not suit you this year.
March could work better, or a shorter Himachal trip that stays closer to Shimla. For other trip lengths, see our winter Spiti itinerary options.
Is December, January, February or March Best for Working Travellers?
December to February brings the harshest winter. Himachal Tourism says deep-winter temperatures in parts of Spiti can fall to about minus 20 degrees Celsius.
January carries the highest risk of snow and road disruption. That makes it the worst choice if you have a fixed return date.
For many first-time working travellers, we prefer late February or early March. Conditions often ease as the season turns, but this is our editorial preference, not a promise of safe roads or snow.
Snow already lying on the ground and fresh snowfall during your trip are not the same thing. You will probably see the first. Nobody can promise you the second.
For the wider picture of the season, read our complete winter Spiti guide.
Which Places Can You Visit in Winter Spiti?

Plan around a few core stops you can probably reach, and treat everything else as a bonus.
Practical Main Stops
Tabo, Kaza and Key Monastery form the backbone of a winter trip when the roads allow it. Build your plan around these three.
Weather-Dependent Stops
Dhankar, Kibber, Chicham, Langza, Hikkim and Komic are all possible, but nobody can guarantee them for a particular day.
Safety and road access come before ticking off every viewpoint. If your driver says no to Komic, take his word for it.
Places Not to Promise
Skip Chandratal and the Manali to Kunzum circuit in deep winter. A normal winter road trip to Kaza cannot include either.
Never walk across a frozen lake or river for a photo. The ice can look solid and still break.
Snow leopard sightings do happen in winter Spiti, but no one can guarantee one. Be wary of anyone who sells you a trip on that promise.
How Much Does Winter Spiti from Hyderabad Cost in 2026-27?

The honest answer is that it depends on your flights, your vehicle and how much buffer you plan for. Here are the pieces you need to add up.
Hyderabad Flights and Transfers
Flight prices change daily, so we cannot give you a fixed figure.
Budget for both flights, any checked baggage, your cab to and from the airport in Hyderabad, and at least one extra hotel night near Chandigarh or Delhi.
Group Tour and 4x4 Examples
Our nine-day winter group tour starts from ₹18,999 per person. It runs from Delhi with overnight Volvo travel and mountain transfers, and it includes six nights in stays plus two nights on the Volvo.
Its published inclusions cover six breakfasts and six dinners. It does not cover your Hyderabad flights.
Our nine-day shared 4x4 expedition starts from ₹28,999 per person. It is a different product with different inclusions.
Both figures are published starting prices. The final price depends on your departure date, vehicle, room sharing and joining point, and published prices can change.
Neither price covers your full trip from Hyderabad. Your flights and extra nights come on top. You can see the full inclusions on our winter Spiti group tour page.
Hidden Costs and Your Safety Fund
Add meals outside the package, room heater charges, winter clothing, travel insurance, extra nights caused by weather, medical costs, extra transport and flight change fees.
The formula is simple. Add your two flights, your ground arrangements, your excluded personal costs and a contingency amount for delays. Add them together and you have your real budget.
Ask any operator, including us, for one itemised quote that covers the whole journey. A single figure makes it much easier to see what you are actually paying for.
Group Tour or Private Vehicle: Which Suits Working Professionals?
A fixed-departure group suits solo travellers and anyone happy with a shared plan. You split the costs, and someone else handles the logistics.
A private vehicle suits couples, friends or small groups whose leave dates or joining city do not match a fixed departure.
In either case, ask four questions before you pay. How much winter experience does the driver have? Does the vehicle carry snow chains? What type of vehicle is it? Are the stays open and heated in winter?
A 4x4 handles snow and ice better in some conditions. It still cannot cross a road that the authorities have closed.
If you want that extra traction, look at our shared 4x4 winter Spiti expedition.
How Do You Manage Altitude Sickness and Extreme Cold?

Kaza sits at about 3,660 metres. According to CDC guidance, altitude illness can affect people who sleep at about 2,450 metres or higher without acclimatising first.
The CDC recommends a gradual ascent. Above 3,000 metres, it suggests raising your sleeping altitude by no more than about 500 metres a day, with extra rest days as needed.
That is why the itinerary above takes days to reach Kaza. The slow climb protects your health.
Being fit does not protect you. A marathon runner can get a pounding headache at Kaza while their less fit friend feels fine.
Watch for headache, nausea, dizziness and unusual tiredness. If you have these symptoms, do not go higher to sleep.
If your symptoms get worse despite rest, go lower and get medical help quickly. Himachal Tourism lists a Community Health Centre at Kaza and a Primary Health Centre at Tabo.
Ask a qualified doctor about acetazolamide before your trip. Do not start any medicine on the advice of a blog or a fellow traveller.
Now the cold. Layer your clothes properly, sleep with a warm hat on and keep your socks dry.
A serious warning: never sleep with a fuel-burning heater running in a closed room. Poorly ventilated heaters can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, which you cannot see or smell.
Do You Need a 4x4, Permits or Public Buses?
Choosing a Winter Vehicle
A capable SUV with good tyres and snow chains handles many winter days. A dedicated 4x4 gives you more grip on ice and packed snow.
No rule says every winter road requires a 4x4. Road restrictions, ice, the driver's experience and how well the road has been cleared matter more than the badge on the car.
Entry Permits and e-Aagman
Himachal Tourism says Indian citizens do not need a general entry permit for Spiti.
Foreign tourists on the Shimla to Kinnaur route may need protected-area permits. Official sources differ on some details, so check the current fee and group rules with the district offices before you travel.
The government's e-Aagman portal lists different e-ticket and e-permit categories for vehicles. Check which category applies to your vehicle on the Shimla side before you travel.
Buses and Shared Taxis
HRTC runs buses in Himachal and has an official booking system.
Himachal Tourism describes the regular Shimla-side Spiti buses as mostly seasonal, running mainly from May to October. Do not plan around a winter bus from Reckong Peo to Kaza until you have confirmed it.
Can You Work Remotely from Kaza in Winter?

Plan on not working. Power cuts, weak mobile signals and patchy internet happen often in winter, especially during storms.
We cannot promise you a working Jio, Airtel or BSNL signal, hotel Wi-Fi, or a stable video call from any particular homestay.
Finish your handovers before you fly. Tell your manager and team exactly when you will have no signal.
Set an out-of-office message. It is far safer than promising to join an important meeting from Kaza and then losing your signal.
Save your flight tickets, homestay contacts and your driver's number to your phone before you leave Rampur. After that, you may not have a signal to look them up.
What Should You Pack for Winter Spiti When Flying from Hyderabad?

Hyderabad's winter is mild. Spiti's is not, so pack for the coldest night of the trip.
Bring thermal base layers, an insulated middle layer, a weatherproof outer jacket and winter trousers.
Add waterproof insulated boots, warm gloves, thick socks, a warm hat, sunglasses and lip balm.
Keep your medicines, ID, some cash and one full set of warm layers in your cabin bag. If your checked bag arrives late, you can still travel up the next morning.
UPI may not work everywhere in the mountains, so carry enough cash.
Check your airline's rules on power banks and baggage weight directly with the carrier.
What Happens if Snowfall Blocks the Road or You Miss Your Flight?
Every winter traveller needs a plan for this before leaving home, not after getting stuck.
If the Road Closes
The sensible move is to stay in a safe village with food and shelter until the authorities reopen the road.
Do not count on the Manali to Kunzum road as a winter way out of Kaza. That road normally stays closed all winter. Operators and guides commonly recommend two to four buffer days, depending on the risk and how fixed your return is.
Protecting Your Flight and Your Job
Book the most flexible return fare you can afford. On a cheap fare, the change fee can cost more than you saved.
Keep emergency money aside and tell your manager honestly that delays are possible. Leave a gap between coming down from the mountains and any important work commitment.
Here is what we tell our travellers: no number of buffer days can guarantee you beat every closure. Buffer days lower the risk. They do not remove it.
The Final Check Routine
In the days before you leave, check the district advisories, the weather forecast, a local operator, your driver and your homestay.
Government pages can show old information. The district road status page, for example, showed a last update of 14 May 2024 when we checked it. Always confirm with someone on the ground.

Fly to Chandigarh or Delhi, travel by road to Shimla, then continue through Kinnaur and Tabo to Kaza. Shimla to Kaza is about 412 km.
Is Chandigarh or Delhi the better airport for reaching winter Spiti?
Chandigarh is closer to Shimla. Delhi suits Delhi-origin group tours that use the Volvo bus. Pick the airport nearest your confirmed pickup point.
How many days are needed for winter Spiti from Hyderabad?
For a cautious plan with buffers, we suggest 12 to 13 calendar days. Our sample 13-day plan uses eight working days of leave.
Can I visit Spiti with only five days of office leave?
A 10-day schedule using five leave days works on paper, but it leaves no buffer. One road closure could make you late back to work.
How much does a winter Spiti trip from Hyderabad cost?
Our nine-day group tour starts at ₹18,999 per person and our shared 4x4 trip at ₹28,999. Hyderabad flights and extra costs come on top.
Is the Shimla to Kaza road open in December and January?
The district calls it almost all-weather, but snow can close it for days at a time. Check the current status just before you travel.
Can I visit Kaza from Manali through the Atal Tunnel in winter?
No. The Atal Tunnel does not get you around Kunzum Pass, which normally stays closed from around October or November until June or July.
Is January or February better for a first winter Spiti trip?
For working travellers, we prefer late February or early March. January carries more risk of snow disruption.
Do I need a 4x4 vehicle for winter Spiti?
Not by law on every road. A 4x4 helps on ice, but an experienced driver and snow chains matter just as much.
Can I work remotely from Kaza during winter?
Do not count on it. Power, signal and internet often drop in winter, so set an out-of-office message before you go.
What happens if snowfall makes me miss my return flight?
You pay to change or rebook the flight. Book a flexible fare, keep buffer days and keep some emergency money aside.
Are permits needed to enter Spiti in winter?
Indian citizens do not need a general entry permit. Foreign tourists may need protected-area permits, and vehicles may need an e-Aagman permit.
