Most people searching for Spiti Valley in November want one simple answer: can I still go, or is it locked under snow?

The short version is that you can. But how you get there matters more in November than in any other month, and the route most people picture in their heads is not the one you should plan around.

We run trips through this region every season, and November is the one where we spend the most time managing expectations. So let us give you the honest, practical version.

Quick Answer: Can You Visit Spiti Valley in November 2026?

Yes, you can visit Spiti Valley in November 2026. You reach it primarily through the Shimla and Kinnaur side, which the district administration treats as an almost all-weather road up to Kaza. This is the route to build your plan around.

Plan to return the same way, through Shimla and Kinnaur. Do not build your trip around exiting via Manali and Kunzum Pass, because that side shuts for winter and you cannot assume it will be open.

Chandratal is not part of a November trip. Treat the lake as closed for the season.

Keep two buffer days. Snow can pause a road for a day, and you want that cushion.

Is Spiti Valley Open Throughout November 2026?

Here is what most tourists get wrong. They think "open" means everything is running. It does not.

"Open" has two separate meanings in November. One is whether Kaza, the main town, stays connected to the outside world. 

The other is whether every café, homestay, high village and sightseeing road is available on the day you show up. These are not the same thing.

Kaza is an inhabited town connected through the Kinnaur side. The Lahaul and Spiti district administration describes the Shimla to Kaza road as an almost all-weather road up to Kaza. So the town itself stays reachable in a normal winter.

But that does not mean the road to Langza is clear, or that your favourite Kaza café is serving, or that the Chicham road is drivable the morning after fresh snow. Those things open and close day to day.

Early November usually gives you better odds of clear roads and functioning local access. It is already winter travel, but the worst of it has not arrived.

As the month moves on, black ice, snowfall and temporary closures become more common. Mid-November is colder and less predictable. Late November is a proper winter proposition where local sightseeing can pause without much warning.

We will not give you an exact closure date for anything in November 2026, because as of early September 2026 that date does not exist yet. Anyone who tells you a firm date is guessing.

Which Route to Spiti Remains Open in November?

There are two ways into Spiti. In November, only one of them is a plan. The other is a maybe.

Shimla to Kinnaur to Tabo to Kaza

This is the route you plan your November trip around. Full stop.

The official distance from Shimla to Kaza is 412 km. The district administration estimates about 20 hours of journey time, and that excludes at least one overnight halt. So this is not a single-day drive. You break it across the Kinnaur valley, sleeping along the way.

The same official source calls this an almost all-weather road up to Kaza. That word "almost" is doing real work. It means the road is built and maintained to stay usable through winter, but snow, ice, landslides or road work can still close a stretch temporarily.

The route climbs gradually through Kinnaur, which is also better for your body. You gain altitude slowly instead of shocking your system.

Manali to Gramphu to Batal to Kunzum Pass to Kaza

This route is seasonal. In November, you should assume it is not available.

The district administration says the Keylong to Kaza connection closes for winter because of Kunzum Pass and heavy snowfall, roughly from October or November through June or July. Kunzum Pass sits at around 4,551 metres, and snow there does not clear on request.

Look at last winter for the real picture. DDMA Lahaul and Spiti formally closed the Gramphu to Losar stretch of NH-505 from November 25, 2025, until further orders, because of black ice and extreme cold.

And a report on the May 20, 2026 BRO reopening said the highway had been blocked beyond Gramphu since the first week of November 2025 after heavy snow. So the road was effectively gone from early November.

That is why we never tell travellers "early November means Kunzum will be open." Last year it was already shut in the first week. Do not build a plan on that pass in November.

Can You Complete the Shimla to Manali Spiti Circuit in November?

No, do not design your November trip as the full circuit.

Plan it as Shimla to Kaza and back to Shimla. That is the reliable shape.

If, in the days right before your trip, Kunzum happens to be officially open and safe, you can reassess with local advice on the ground. 

But that is a last-minute bonus, not something to assume months ahead. You can keep an eye on the Manali to Kaza road status as your dates approach.

Is Kunzum Pass Open in November 2026?

As of September 3, 2026, there is no confirmed November 2026 winter closing date for Kunzum Pass. We are not going to invent one, and you should be suspicious of any blog that quotes a firm date.

Here is the seasonal pattern instead. The pass sits at roughly 4,551 metres. 

Once real snow arrives, and once night temperatures lock in black ice on the approach, the road becomes unsafe and eventually gets closed. In a typical winter that happens somewhere around late autumn.

Last year it was blocked from the first week of November. Some years it holds a little longer. The point is that dependable winter access simply does not exist here, so you plan as if it is closed.

Are Kunzum Pass and Chandratal Lake Accessible in November?

For an ordinary tourist trip, Chandratal in November is a clear no.

Our own 2026 Chandratal research treats November through April as completely inaccessible for normal tourism. Himachal Tourism lists tented accommodation at Chandratal as available only from June to October. After that, the camps are gone.

We will be blunt here, because we have seen people ask. Do not try to drive as far as the road allows and then trek to the lake in winter. 

There are no camps, no maintained tourist access and no reliable emergency support out there. If something goes wrong, help is very far away. This is not a casual November excursion, and treating it like one is dangerous.

What Is Spiti Valley Weather Like in November?

Cold. But the exact numbers online are a mess, so let us be honest about that instead of pretending we have one clean figure.

Expected Kaza temperature in November

Temperature sources for Kaza in November genuinely conflict, and we would rather show you the range than fake precision.

AccuWeather's current long-range page for November 2026 in Kaza Soma implies an average high of around 2 degrees Celsius and an average low near minus 18 degrees Celsius. 

That is a monthly outlook, not a forecast for your specific dates, so treat it as a rough signal.

Other travel sources commonly quote daytime temperatures around 0 to 8 degrees Celsius and nights around minus 10 to minus 15 degrees Celsius.

These do not agree, and we are not going to hide that. The practical planning version is this: daytime can sit anywhere from around freezing to several degrees above, depending on the date, the sun and your elevation, while nights are regularly sub-zero and minus 10 or colder is entirely plausible.

Do not assume the whole valley shares one temperature either. Kaza and the higher villages above it are not the same. Check the real forecast a few days before you travel, and pack for the cold end of the range.

Spiti in the first week of November

Early November usually gives you the better odds of manageable roads. It is still winter travel, not autumn, so set your expectations there.

Expect frost, sub-zero nights and the real possibility of fresh snow. We cannot guarantee clear roads and we cannot guarantee snow. Both are possible.

Mid-November

By the middle of the month, expect more wintry conditions overall and a higher chance that local roads to the high villages turn icy. Your day-to-day flexibility matters more now.

Late November

Late November is a more serious winter trip. Accommodation choices and sightseeing flexibility become the things that make or break your days.

Black ice is the real risk here. Remember, last year DDMA closed the Gramphu to Losar stretch on November 25, 2025 specifically because of black ice and extreme cold. That is the kind of condition you are planning around by late month.

Does It Snow in Spiti in November?

Yes, snowfall is possible in November. No, we cannot promise it will snow while you are there. Nobody can predict snowfall dates months ahead.

There are three different things people mean when they say "snow," and it helps to separate them. Seeing snow already sitting on the surrounding peaks is very likely. 

Finding existing snow at higher elevations is common. Actually experiencing fresh snowfall during your exact dates is a matter of luck.

Higher villages like Langza, Komic and Kibber sit colder and catch snow more readily. That is the appeal. 

But the same thing means their access roads can turn difficult sooner than the main valley floor. Snow you can look at is a gift. Snow on the road you need is a problem. Both come together up there.

Is Spiti Valley Safe in November?

Safety in November is not a yes or no. It depends on the weather on your dates, the road status, your driver, your vehicle, how flexible your plan is and how well you have prepared.

The real hazards are straightforward. Black ice on shaded stretches. Fresh snow. Sub-zero cold that tests your gear. Altitude, which does not care about the season. 

Shorter useful daylight, which shrinks your safe driving window. And slower emergency response, because you are far from big hospitals.

None of this is meant to scare you. It is meant to shape your choices. The single most useful rule we give our travellers is simple: do not drive at night. Get where you are going while the sun is up.

After any snowfall, check local road conditions before you commit to a high-village drive. The road to Langza or Chicham can be fine one morning and a sheet of ice the next.

Can a Normal Car Reach Spiti in November, or Is a 4x4 Needed?

The honest answer is: it depends on the conditions on your actual dates.

There is no official rule saying every vehicle on the Shimla to Kaza highway in November must be a 4x4. On a dry, cleared highway, what matters most is the condition of the vehicle, good tyres, decent ground clearance and a driver who knows mountain roads.

The moment snow or black ice appears, a capable high-clearance 4x4 becomes far more useful. 

But here is what we want you to hear clearly: four-wheel drive is not a shield against bad judgement or black ice. Ice does not care how many wheels are driving. Plenty of 4x4s slide off icy roads every winter.

If you have never driven in Himachal or on icy Himalayan roads, do not test that skill in a rented hatchback in November. Use an experienced local winter driver. It is the cheapest safety upgrade you can buy.

On snow chains, they help only when conditions actually call for them and only when your driver knows how to fit and use them. Carrying chains you cannot fit is just extra weight.

Which Villages and Monasteries Can You Visit in November?

Plenty is still visitable on a clear November day. The word "clear" is the catch.

Kaza and Key Monastery

Kaza is your base. From here, Key Monastery is 12 km by road according to the district administration. On a good day it is an easy, beautiful drive up to the monastery clinging to its hillside.

After fresh snow, check that short road before heading up. Twelve kilometres is nothing until it is iced over.

Tabo

Tabo is one of the oldest monasteries in the region and a natural halt on the way to Kaza. The old temple site and Kalachakra Temple generally open from 9 AM to 5 PM unless otherwise announced.

Tabo Monastery itself warns that winter road access to the area can become difficult or temporarily cut off. So visit it, but stay aware that the road can change.

Kibber and Chicham

Treat both as weather-dependent day trips from Kaza. The Chicham bridge is a striking spot on a clear day. We will not promise you access on any specific November date, because the road decides that, not the calendar.

Langza, Hikkim and Komic

These high villages can be the highlight of a bright November day, with the light and the emptiness feeling like nowhere else. Keep them as flexible items, not fixed appointments. Whether you get up there depends entirely on local road conditions after any snowfall.

Dhankar and Pin Valley

Both are conditional detours. Do not lock Pin Valley into a fixed winter itinerary.

Here is the point that trips people up: a village can stay inhabited all winter while the tourist road to it is temporarily unusable. People living there have their own ways. Your vehicle does not. Inhabited does not mean drivable for you.

Which Hotels and Homestays Remain Open in November?

We are not going to hand you a list of properties and swear they will all be open on your dates. That would be dishonest, because winter operations change year to year.

What we can tell you is that Kaza and Tabo generally give you the strongest accommodation options for a winter trip. Many tourist-season businesses and remote-village stays scale down or shut once the crowds leave.

So call ahead and confirm four things before you rely on any place. First, whether they are actually operating on your exact dates. Second, what heating they provide. 

Third, whether you get running water or bucket water. Fourth, whether meals are included, because you will not always find a restaurant open nearby.

We have watched travellers arrive at a homestay that looked open online and find it shuttered for winter. A two-minute phone call prevents that. Reconfirm directly, close to travel.

Best Spiti November Itinerary: 8 Days Plus 2 Buffer Days

This plan is deliberately slower than a summer circuit. It uses the Shimla route both ways, and it does not include Chandratal or Kunzum. That is on purpose, not an oversight.

Day 1: Shimla to Kalpa or Reckong Peo

Start the gradual Kinnaur climb. This slow approach is what protects you from altitude trouble later. Settle into Kalpa or Reckong Peo for the night.

Day 2: Kalpa or Reckong Peo to Tabo

Continue through Kinnaur and Sumdo towards Tabo. Keep detours minimal. November driving days should not be crammed.

Day 3: Tabo to Kaza

Visit Tabo Monastery in the morning while you are fresh. Add Dhankar only if the road, daylight and weather all cooperate. Then push on to Kaza and rest.

Day 4: Key, Kibber and Chicham

Make all three conditional on road clearance. On a clear day this is a wonderful loop. Return to Kaza each night.

Day 5: Langza, Hikkim and Komic

Treat this as your flexible high-village day. If the roads are icy or blocked, do not force it. Stay around Kaza, visit what is open lower down, and enjoy the slower pace instead.

Day 6: Pin Valley or reserve sightseeing day

Keep Pin Valley optional. Honestly, in November this day often works best as a reserve, catching up on anything snow pushed off an earlier day.

Day 7: Kaza towards Tabo, Nako or a suitable Kinnaur halt

Begin the return the same way you came. Break it at a sensible halt rather than racing.

Day 8: Continue towards Shimla

Carry on down through Kinnaur. Do not force a single brutal drive just to hit a schedule. Split it if the day runs short.

Days 9 and 10: Buffer days

Keep two buffer days for snow closures, slow roads and plan changes. Do not book a non-refundable flight or an important event for the day right after your theoretical return from Kaza. 

If a road closes for a day, and it can, those buffers are what save your trip from turning into a crisis.

What Should You Pack for Spiti in November?

Think in layers, and think warmer than you expect. Start with thermal base layers, top and bottom, worn against the skin. Over that, insulating middle layers like fleece or a light down layer that traps heat.

Your outer shell should be windproof or insulated, because the wind is what turns a cold day brutal. Add proper gloves, warm socks with spares, and winter-capable footwear with grip, because iced-over paths are common.

Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. The high-altitude sun burns fast even in the cold, and the glare off snow is harsh. Carry moisturiser and lip balm too, since the dry cold cracks skin quickly.

A thermos is worth its space for hot tea on long drives. Pack a power bank because charging is unreliable, and a headlamp for the early dark. 

And carry your essential personal medicines, along with anything you would want for a headache or an upset stomach at altitude.

Do You Need Permits for Spiti in November?

For Indian nationals, no permit is currently required for visiting Tabo, according to Tabo Monastery.

For foreign nationals, Tabo Monastery currently states that travelling to Tabo via Shimla and Reckong Peo needs an Inner Line Permit.

Tabo Monastery also warns clearly that permit rules can change. So if you are a foreign traveller, verify the requirement shortly before you leave rather than trusting an old blog. 

We are only speaking about Tabo here, so do not stretch this into assumptions about every road or border area.

Is Spiti Valley Worth Visiting in November?

Here is our straight verdict.

November is worth it if you genuinely enjoy cold weather, solitude, stark winter landscapes and a road trip where you stay flexible. The valley in winter is quiet in a way the summer crowds never let it be, and that emptiness is the whole reward.

It is a poor choice if your priorities are Chandratal Lake, completing the Manali to Shimla circuit, guaranteed snowfall, lots of open cafés and hotels, real comfort or a rigid day-by-day plan that cannot bend. November will frustrate all of those.

The first half of the month is generally an easier compromise than the end of it, but we will not guarantee conditions. Nobody honestly can.
