What Is Sissu Weather Like in November?

November is the handover month, autumn stepping aside for winter. The change is gradual but real, and you feel it most after the sun drops.

A local Sissu seasonal source gives a rough working range of 6 to 12°C in the day and -4 to 3°C at night. Treat these as approximate seasonal figures, not a forecast for your exact dates. 

A government-hosted Sissu wildlife plan also notes that the November to February window can bring sub-zero temperatures.

Here's what those numbers feel like on the ground. A sunny afternoon in an open spot can feel almost pleasant, warm enough to sit out for chai. 

Step into shade or wait for the sun to dip behind the ridge, and the cold arrives fast. In our experience, people underestimate this every single time.

Early November Weather

This is generally the easier stretch of the month. Roads tend to be drier, sightseeing is comfortable in daylight, and the autumn colours in Lahaul are worth the drive on their own.

Nights are still cold, so pack properly. And no, we won't promise you snow this early. It happens some years and skips others.

Late November Weather

As winter settles in, frost becomes common and the chance of first snow climbs. Mornings get sharp, and shaded stretches of road can turn slippery before the sun reaches them.

Just don't assume every late November brings snow. Some years it stays stubbornly dry well into December.

Does It Snow in Sissu in November?

This is the big one, so let's slow down and get it right.

There are three different things people mean when they say "snow." There's fresh snowfall while you're there. There's old snow already lying on the ground from an earlier spell. 

And there's snow visible only on the high peaks around the valley while the valley floor stays clear. These are very different experiences, and no one can promise you any of them on a specific November 2026 date.

The clearest way to show why is to look at two recent years. On 10 November 2023, fresh snow was reported around the Atal Tunnel, Sissu, and Koksar, and it disrupted traffic. That's early-November snow, real and documented.

Now the other side. In November 2025, the IMD recorded just 1.9 mm of precipitation in Lahaul-Spiti, which was 92 percent below normal for the month. Almost nothing.

Same month, two years apart, completely opposite outcomes. That's the whole reason we refuse to sell a fixed snow promise. What most tourists get wrong is treating November snow like a scheduled event. It isn't. It's the weather.

Can You Get Snow in Early November?

Yes, it's possible. The 2023 snowfall proves early-November snow has happened. But it's unreliable, and anyone selling it as normal, guaranteed valley snow is not being straight with you.

Are Snow Chances Better in Late November?

Seasonally, yes, the possibility increases as winter approaches. Think of late November as the start of the first-snow window. But it's still weather dependent, not a certainty. We'll tell you there's a better possibility. We won't tell you you'll get snow, because we can't.

Is the Manali to Sissu Road Open in November 2026?

The normal Manali to Sissu corridor runs through the Atal Tunnel and covers roughly 38 to 40 km. In clear, normal conditions, the drive takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.

November can stretch that. Frost, snow clearance, traffic regulation, road checks, and photo stops all add time. Budget more than the map tells you.

We can't hand you a guaranteed November 2026 road status, because this guide is written before November. 

The official district road-status page on September 18 lists Manali to Keylong as open.. Do not read it as November's status. The actual November 2026 condition has to be checked on your travel day.

What Can Temporarily Stop Traffic?

Fresh snowfall, black ice, active snow clearing, avalanche warnings, and police or BRO traffic regulation can all cause delays or temporary restrictions. None of these happen every November, but any of them can happen on your day.

What Should You Check on the Morning You Travel?

Check the official Lahaul-Spiti road-status page, any local district or police advisory, and the weather around Solang and both Atal Tunnel portals. Confirm whether there's a same-day vehicle restriction, and check the latest e-Aagman requirement.

Is the Atal Tunnel Open in November?

The Atal Tunnel is 9.02 km long. Its South Portal sits about 25 km from Manali at 3,060 metres, and its North Portal is near Teling/Sissu at roughly 3,071 metres. It was built to provide year-round connectivity between Manali and Lahaul-Spiti.

Here's the nuance that trips people up

Year-round connectivity does not mean tourists can travel the approaches without interruption during every snow event. The tunnel itself stays connected. The roads leading to it may not.

Proof of how quickly things turn: in March 2026, around 1,500 vehicles were reported stranded near the South Portal after sudden heavy snowfall. That's what a bad weather window looks like on this route.

There's also a 2026 Lahaul-Spiti administration safety order that restricted stopping, parking, and tourist activity in specified avalanche-prone areas around the North Portal. 

Obey the barriers and police instructions. Never stop in a restricted zone just for photos. That order exists because people have died in avalanches for a phone snap, and no picture is worth it.

Sissu in Early November vs Late November: What Changes?

Early November

Early November generally gives you the better shot at autumn scenery, drier roads, and relaxed sightseeing. It's the more forgiving half of the month for a first-timer.

Nights are still cold, so don't pack light. And treat any snow as a lucky bonus, not something you're owed.

Late November

Late November moves closer to real winter. First snow, frost, and icy road patches all become more likely.

The trade-off is more road uncertainty and colder nights. You gain snow potential and lose predictability. Neither half of the month is guaranteed safe or guaranteed snowy, so plan for flexibility either way.

Should You Stay Overnight in Sissu in November or Return to Manali?

Let's make this a real decision instead of a vague suggestion.

A Manali day trip makes more sense if you want a wider choice of hotels and restaurants, if the weather looks uncertain, if your time is limited, or if you don't have a confirmed winter-ready room in Sissu. 

Manali simply has more backup options when things go sideways.

An overnight stay makes sense if you want a quiet valley evening and a still morning, you have buffer time in your plan, and you've confirmed proper winter facilities at your stay.

That last point matters more than anything. Before you pay for any Sissu hotel or homestay, confirm room heating, hot water, working winter plumbing, electricity backup, meal availability, parking, driver accommodation if you need it, and the property's weather-related cancellation policy. 

What we tell our travellers is simple: never assume a Sissu property has heaters, hot water, or power backup just because the photos look cosy. Ask, and get it in writing. A cold night in an unheated room at 3,120 metres is genuinely miserable.

What Can You Actually Do in Sissu in November?

Keep your expectations grounded and you'll enjoy it more.

You can visit Sissu Lake and the nearby viewpoints, take in the public view of Sissu Waterfall, and do short village walks when the surfaces are dry. 

The Chandra Valley scenery is the real draw, and it photographs beautifully in the low November light. Cultural stops are worth it too, if they're accessible on your day.

One honest heads-up

As winter approaches, some seasonal activities and small tourism businesses wind down. You may find fewer cafés open and fewer operators running than in peak months.

Don't expect a frozen waterfall in November. Strong freezing of Sissu Waterfall is more of a December-to-February thing. And skip any ambitious high-altitude trekking plans, this isn't the month for it.

What Should You Wear in Sissu in November?

Layering is the whole game here, so build your outfit in layers rather than one thick jacket.

Start with thermal base layers, add a fleece or wool mid layer, and finish with an insulated or windproof outer jacket. Add a warm cap, gloves, thick socks, and shoes with proper grip. If snow is possible during your dates, water-resistant footwear earns its place.

Two things people forget in the cold. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen, because the UV at this altitude stays strong even when the air is freezing. And carry lip balm and moisturiser, because the dry mountain air will crack your skin faster than you'd expect.

Taxi, Self-Drive or Bike: What Works in November?

Local Cab

A local driver becomes especially valuable when snow or frost is in the forecast, or if you don't have much winter mountain-driving experience. These drivers read the road for a living.

Self-Drive

A normal car handles the route fine in clear conditions. Fresh snowfall, black ice, or a same-day vehicle restriction changes everything.

We won't tell you a 4x4 is always mandatory, because authorities adjust the allowed vehicle categories based on conditions. But if you've never driven on snow or black ice, don't make Sissu your first attempt. 

Use an experienced local driver instead. Black ice is invisible and unforgiving, and the learning curve is not worth the risk.

Bike or Scooter

Dry-road riding in early November can be a joy. Riding after frost or snowfall is a different animal entirely.

Cold hands, hidden ice in shaded corners, and fast-changing mountain weather make winter two-wheeler travel genuinely harder. Confirm same-day two-wheeler access before you set off, because it isn't always allowed.

What Does a November Sissu Trip Cost?

For a rough sense of transport, existing route guides commonly place smaller vehicles at around ₹2,500 to ₹3,000, while SUVs may cost around ₹3,500 to ₹4,000 or more. These are general planning figures rather than fixed November 2026 rates.

Traveller-reported quotes can be considerably higher depending on conditions and vehicle requirements. 

For example, one November 2025 traveller discussion mentioned a round-trip quote of around ₹7,000. Treat this only as an example of how much prices can vary, not as a standard fare.

Do You Need a Permit or e-Aagman Registration for Sissu in November?

First, clear up a common mix-up. A Rohtang Pass sightseeing permit is not the same as travelling through the Atal Tunnel toward Sissu. Different things.

The current official e-Aagman portal says vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti must apply for an e-pass. It also refers to an e-permit per vehicle for the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, Koksar, and Chandertal circuit, and an e-ticket for other destinations.

The exact category, registration requirement, and applicable fee for a simple Sissu trip in November 2026 may change, so check the live e-Aagman portal close to your travel date before leaving for Sissu. 

Avoid relying on older advice that says no permit or registration is required.

Is Sissu in November Suitable for Children and Senior Citizens?

Sissu sits at around 3,120 metres. That altitude, combined with cold nights, surfaces that turn slippery after snowfall, reduced seasonal services, and possible road delays, means families need to plan conservatively.

For families, favour daylight travel, keep sightseeing gentle, and either book a confirmed heated Sissu property or return to Manali for the night. 

If anyone in your group has heart, breathing, or other medical concerns, get individual medical advice before a high-altitude trip. Don't take chances at 3,120 metres.

Common November Mistakes to Avoid

The most common one is booking the whole trip because a single social-media reel showed snow. That reel was probably from a different year and a lucky day. Don't plan around it.

Another is assuming a Manali weather forecast proves Sissu will have snow. They're different altitudes on different sides of the tunnel, and Manali's weather tells you little about the Lahaul side.

Plenty of people also assume "Atal Tunnel open" means every tourist vehicle can pass through without restriction. As we covered, connectivity and unrestricted access are not the same thing. 

Related to that, some travellers stop in a prohibited North Portal zone for photos, which is both illegal and dangerous.

Then there's driving after dark on a cold day, which invites black-ice trouble, and arriving for an overnight stay without confirming heating and meals, which turns a fun trip into a shivering one. 

Booking a rigid onward route toward higher passes just because Sissu is accessible is another trap, since Sissu being open says nothing about the passes beyond it. And finally, expecting guaranteed live snowfall. By now you know why that one won't hold.

November suits flexible travellers who value quiet landscapes and can accept uncertainty. If you need everything locked and guaranteed, this isn't your month.
