Sissu in January 2027: Snowfall, Weather, Road Conditions & Is It Open for Tourists?

Most people searching for Sissu in January want one answer: will I actually get in? The honest answer depends on three separate things, and most blogs only check one.
What most tourists get wrong is treating the Atal Tunnel as a guarantee. The tunnel can run while police hold tourist cars at the approach.
The Sissu Panchayat can also pause tourism for local rituals, whatever the road says. So we cover all three here: weather, road and police permission, and Sissu's own tourism rules.
Quick Answer: Can You Visit Sissu in January 2027?
Early January can work when roads are clear and Sissu allows tourism, but nobody can guarantee it.
Heavy snowfall can stop the Manali to Lahaul road for a day or longer, even though the Atal Tunnel gives Lahaul winter connectivity.
Late January needs an extra check. Sissu has paused tourism during the Halda and dev observance period in recent winters.
As of 31 October 2026, we found no confirmed Sissu tourism closure notice for January 2027.
If you want a trip that bends around these variables, our Sissu tour packages keep the Sissu day flexible instead of fixed.

Is Sissu Open in January 2027? Why "Open" Means Three Different Things

In winter, "open" can mean three separate things. You need all three to say yes on the same day.
First, the Atal Tunnel can be operational. That only tells you the tunnel itself is running.
Second, police can regulate or stop tourist vehicles on the approach roads after snow or ice. The tunnel can run while your taxi waits at a barrier.
Third, the Sissu Panchayat or the local administration can suspend tourism activities during religious observances. That decision has nothing to do with road status.
So any simple yes or no answer misleads you. In our experience, the travellers who enjoy Sissu most in winter check all three, separately, every time.
What Happened in January 2026?
January 2026 shows why one date never tells the full story.
The Sissu Panchayat announced a suspension of tourism activities from 20 January to 28 February 2026.
Separately, a Keylong SDM administrative order restricted vehicle movement from Kuthbihal towards Koksar and Sissu from 14 January 2026 until further orders.
The dates differ because two different bodies issued two different measures. One covered tourism in the village. The other covered vehicles on the road.
Here is the insider point most guides miss. The vehicle restriction started six days before the tourism suspension.
A traveller who only read the Panchayat notice could have planned 15 January as a safe day and still met a closed road.
You follow whichever current administration or police order applies to your travel date. If either one stops you, you do not go.
What Happened in Previous Winters?
The pattern repeats. Sissu stopped tourism activities from 15 January to 28 February 2024.
In 2025, tourism restrictions again applied from around mid January to 28 February.
The reason stays the same each year. The village observes Halda and its dev rituals, and the restriction lets those ceremonies continue peacefully.
We are not predicting 2027 from this. We are showing you the pattern so you plan around it instead of discovering it at a barrier.
What About Early January 2027?
In past winters, early January has sometimes stayed available for visitors, because the recurring restrictions began around mid January.
That still depends on snow, road clearance and police orders. Early January is easier to consider. It is not guaranteed open.
Remember that fresh snow fell at Sissu and around the tunnel on 1 January 2026. Your early January date can face the same weather.
What About Sissu in January End?
Sissu in January end carries two independent risks, and either one can cancel your day.
The first is weather. Late January is deep winter, and on 28 January 2026 heavy snowfall near the Atal Tunnel completely suspended Manali to Lahaul connectivity.
The second is the recurring local tourism restriction. In each of the last three winters, the end of January fell inside Sissu's restriction period.
What we tell our travellers is simple. Do not make a non refundable late January Sissu booking until the 2027 situation is confirmed.
That confirmation comes only when the Sissu Panchayat, the Keylong administration or the Lahaul and Spiti authorities publish their current order.
What Is Sissu Weather Like in January?

Sissu sits at about 3,130 metres, according to the official Lahaul and Spiti district tourism website. At that height, January cold feels nothing like a Shimla winter.
Local winter travel sources report rough January planning ranges of about minus 2°C to 4 or 5°C during the day.
For nights and colder spells, the same sources report roughly minus 8°C to minus 15°C.
Read these as rough local planning ranges. They are not an official IMD climatological normal for Sissu, and they are not a forecast for January 2027.
Why Sun and Shade Feel Like Two Different Places in Sissu
A clear afternoon in full sun can feel surprisingly comfortable. You may even unzip your jacket for a photo.
Step into shade, catch a cold wind, or stay out after sunset, and the same spot feels far colder.
Here is the timing tip that changes the whole outing. Spend your Sissu time in the sunlit middle of the day, and start back towards Manali well before the light fades.
That timing also keeps you on snowy approach roads in daylight, which is when you want to drive them.
In our experience, first time snow travellers dress for the sunny photo and forget the shaded walk back to the car. Dress for the shade, then take layers off in the sun.
Does It Snow in Sissu in January?

Yes. January sits firmly inside Sissu's winter snow period.
Local reports described fresh snowfall at Sissu and around the Atal Tunnel on 1 January 2026, right at the start of the month.
But "will I see snow?" really hides two different questions.
The first: will fresh snow fall while you stand there? Nobody can promise that months in advance.
The second: will snow already cover the valley floor? That is more likely in deep winter, but the exact cover still depends on that year's weather.
So nobody can honestly sell you guaranteed snow. If an agent promises it for a date three months away, treat that as a sales line.
Can You Predict Fresh Snowfall for Exact January Dates?
No. A useful snowfall forecast only becomes available much closer to your travel date.
Our team recommends locking the flexible parts of your trip first, then checking the short range forecast in the final days before you go.
Early January vs Late January for Snow in Sissu
Late January is deeper winter, so snow on the ground feels more likely. The catch is that road disruption and the recurring tourism restriction also hit late January harder.
Early January makes local restrictions easier to plan around, based on past winters. Snow cover and roads still depend on the weather that week.
If you want the best balance, aim early in the month and keep a spare day. If you want deep winter and can accept a cancelled outing, late January can work once the 2027 order is out.
What Are Manali to Sissu Road Conditions Like in January?

The Atal Tunnel changed winter travel to Lahaul. It did not make winter travel unconditional.
Two days from January 2026 show the difference clearly.
On 26 January 2026, authorities restored one lane of the Keylong to Manali road. At that stage, they opened it only for 4x4 vehicles because of difficult conditions.
Just two days later, on 28 January 2026, heavy snowfall around both portals of the tunnel again completely suspended connectivity between Manali and Lahaul.
That is why same day road information beats any generic line like "Atal Tunnel stays open all winter". The road you read about last week may not be the road you get.
If Sissu is one part of a bigger winter holiday, our Manali tour packages build in the spare time these roads demand.
Is Atal Tunnel Open in January 2027?
The tunnel makes winter connectivity possible, and it runs on many winter days.
Snow and ice on the approaches can still lead police to stop or regulate tourist traffic. So nobody can promise you access on an exact date.
Check the Lahaul and Spiti district road status and the current police or administration advisory close to your departure.
A serious warning here. If a driver or agent swears Sissu is "fully open" while a police order or Panchayat notice says otherwise, believe the order.
Never pay anyone extra to "manage" a barrier. In January 2026 alone, a vehicle order began on 14 January and a road closure hit on 28 January, so the official notice always wins.
Do You Need a 4x4 for Sissu in January?
Not on every clear January day. No permanent rule says every vehicle needs a 4x4 all month.
Authorities have, however, limited traffic to 4x4 vehicles during difficult snow conditions, including on 26 January 2026.
Our team recommends an experienced local winter driver whenever the forecast shows fresh snow or ice. In January, the driver matters as much as the vehicle.
An insider tip: a good local driver often hears about the day's traffic controls before any website updates. Ask yours the night before, and again in the morning.
Is Rohtang Pass Open in January?
Rohtang Pass and the Atal Tunnel are two different routes. People mix them up all the time.
Rohtang Pass normally stays snowbound and closed to tourist traffic in January.
The Atal Tunnel runs beneath the Rohtang massif and gives you the winter connection towards Lahaul.
So skip any January deal that sells you a "Rohtang visit". Ask exactly where the car will go, because in January the answer should be the tunnel route, not the pass.
If Rohtang itself is on your list, plan it for later in the year. Our guide to Rohtang Pass in March explains what to expect as the season turns.
What Can You Actually Do in Sissu in January?

Everything in this section assumes Sissu officially allows tourism on your day. If a restriction applies, none of it applies.
On permitted days, January in Sissu means snow scenery, photography, short careful walks through the village area, and simply standing in a white Lahaul valley.
Do not count on commercial adventure activities. Previous winter restriction periods suspended tourism and adventure activities in Sissu.
So ATVs, skiing, tube sliding and similar rides may not run on your date. We tell travellers not to prepay for any Sissu snow activity bundle in January. Pay on the spot, and only if it is actually running.
For the warm up, have hot chai at one of the small dhabas along the main road in Sissu, the same roadside tea stop travellers use after coming out of the tunnel.
A cup of chai in your gloved hands, with the snowy valley in front of you, is honestly half the reason people make this trip.
Sissu Waterfall in January
Local winter sources describe the Sissu Waterfall turning partly frozen during deep winter.
How frozen it looks on your exact date, nobody can say months ahead. Treat a frozen waterfall as a bonus, not the reason for the trip.
Sissu Lake and Village Scenery
Sissu lies on the right bank of the Chandra River, and the Chandra valley opens up wide around the village.
On a snowy day, you see white fields, white rooftops and the river running between snowy banks, with mountains rising on both sides.
We have deliberately left out entry fees, opening hours and walking times for the lake. Check them on the spot instead of trusting old numbers online.
Should You Stay in Sissu or Visit From Manali in January?

For most January travellers, we suggest Manali as the base and Sissu as a day outing.
From Manali, you can move the Sissu day forward, push it back, or cancel it if access changes. You lose a plan, not your whole holiday.
An overnight stay in Sissu only makes sense once the property confirms it accepts tourists on your exact dates.
Late January needs extra care. A tourism restriction can affect hotels and tourism operations even while the regional highway connection runs.
Here is the money saving tip. Never pay for Sissu nights you cannot cancel. A cancelled outing from Manali costs you a day, while a non refundable Sissu night costs you money too.
If you want us to set up the Manali side with that flexibility built in, our winter trips based in Manali work exactly this way.
What Should You Do If Sissu Is Closed?

Respect it. Police barriers, Panchayat restrictions and local religious observances all get the same answer from you: turn back.
Never try to bypass a restriction, and never let a driver talk you into a "back way".
Halda and the dev rituals belong to the people who live here. They are part of Lahaul's culture, not an inconvenience someone invented for tourists.
The smart move happens before the trip. Give the Manali part of your winter holiday a fallback sightseeing day, so the whole trip never rests on Sissu alone.
Our list of adventure activities in Manali gives you ideas for that spare day, so a closed barrier never means a wasted morning.
Is Sissu in January Suitable for Families and First Time Snow Travellers?
It can be, if everyone in the group accepts three things before leaving home.
The cold is severe, not mild. The road plan can change overnight. And the Sissu outing itself might get cancelled on the morning you planned it.
If someone in your group will feel let down by a cancelled day, say so early. Set the expectation that Sissu is a bonus, not the headline.
Our team recommends keeping Manali as the flexible base for anyone who wants a simpler first winter trip. You still get the snow day if conditions allow, without betting the holiday on it.
For kids and older family members, plan shorter outdoor stretches with warm breaks in the car or at a dhaba. Shorter, warmer outings beat one long cold one.
What Should You Pack for Sissu in January?

Start with thermal base layers, top and bottom. Everything else sits on top of them, so do not skip these to save bag space.
Over that, carry proper insulated outerwear. A hoodie and a light jacket will not hold up against the night ranges local sources report.
Your feet decide your mood. Wear waterproof winter footwear with good grip, because snow melts into ordinary sneakers fast.
Pack warm socks, plenty of them. Wet socks after a snow walk make the drive back miserable.
Add gloves and a proper head covering that protects your ears. Wind on an open valley floor feels much colder on bare skin.
Bring sunglasses as well. Sunlight bouncing off fresh snow strains your eyes, even on a cold day.
Here is an insider tip most packing lists miss. Keep one full set of spare dry clothing in the car, not in your Manali hotel. If you get wet in Sissu, you change on the spot instead of shivering for the whole drive back.
The 24 Hour Check Before Going to Sissu
The day before your Sissu outing, run four quick checks. Then run them again in the morning, because overnight snowfall can change every answer.
First, check whether the Sissu Panchayat or the Keylong administration has issued a tourism restriction for your date. This matters most from mid January onwards.
Second, check the latest district and police road advisory. Remember that a vehicle order and a tourism order can carry different dates, as they did in 2026.
Third, check the short range weather forecast. A clear evening in Manali tells you little about the tunnel approaches the next morning.
Fourth, ask your driver whether the day's traffic controls allow your planned vehicle to proceed. If authorities have limited traffic to 4x4 vehicles, your sedan does not go.
In our experience, the travellers who skip the morning recheck are the ones who end up waiting at a barrier.
Want someone local to run these checks with you before your trip? Message us with your dates.

Is Sissu Part of Spiti Valley?
No. Sissu falls in the Lahaul and Spiti district, but it lies on the Lahaul side, in the Chandra valley.
So Sissu is a Lahaul village, not a Spiti Valley village. The shared district name confuses a lot of first time visitors.
The same mix up happens with Chandratal. Our explainer on whether Chandra Taal is in Lahaul Valley or Spiti Valley clears up the geography properly.
If you want to see the Spiti side itself on a future trip, start with our Spiti Valley tour packages.
Final Verdict: Should You Plan Sissu for January 2027?
Yes, if you genuinely want deep winter scenery and you can live with a flexible plan. No, if your trip only works when every day goes exactly to schedule.
Early January looks easier from the local restriction point of view, based on the last three winters. It still depends completely on snow, roads and police orders on the day.
For mid or late January, treat Sissu as unconfirmed until the Sissu Panchayat, the Keylong administration or the Lahaul and Spiti authorities publish the 2027 order.
What we tell every traveller who asks us about January Sissu is the same. Base yourself in Manali, keep the Sissu day movable, and keep every Sissu booking refundable.
Do that, and the worst case is a changed plan. Skip it, and the worst case is a lost booking and a long wait at a barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sissu open in January 2027?
Nobody can confirm it yet. As of 31 October 2026, we found no published 2027 Sissu restriction, so check the current Panchayat and administration order before you travel.
Is Sissu open at the end of January?
Usually not something to count on. In 2024, 2025 and 2026, late January fell inside Sissu's tourism restriction period, so wait for the 2027 order.
Does Sissu get snowfall in January?
Yes, January falls inside Sissu's winter snow period. Fresh snow fell there on 1 January 2026, but nobody can guarantee snowfall on your exact date.
Can I see snow in Sissu in early January?
Snow on the ground is likely in deep winter, but the exact cover depends on that year's weather. Nobody can promise fresh snowfall on your date.
What is the Sissu temperature in January?
Local sources report rough ranges of minus 2°C to 4 or 5°C by day and minus 8°C to minus 15°C at night. These are planning ranges, not an official IMD normal.
Is Atal Tunnel open in January?
It runs on many winter days, but police can stop or regulate tourist traffic after snow. On 28 January 2026, heavy snow suspended Manali to Lahaul connectivity completely.
Is the Manali to Sissu road open in January?
It opens and closes with the weather. Check the Lahaul and Spiti district road status and the police advisory the evening before and the morning of travel.
Do I need a 4x4 to visit Sissu in January?
Not on every clear day. Authorities have limited traffic to 4x4 vehicles in difficult snow, as on 26 January 2026, so an experienced winter driver helps.
Can I stay overnight in Sissu in January?
Only after the property confirms it accepts tourists on your exact dates. A tourism restriction can affect stays even when the highway runs.
Is Sissu Waterfall frozen in January?
Local sources describe it turning partly frozen in deep winter. Nobody can promise how frozen it will look on your date.
Is Rohtang Pass open when Sissu is open?
Normally no. Rohtang stays snowbound and closed to tourist traffic in January, while you reach Sissu through the Atal Tunnel.
Is Sissu better than Solang Valley for snow in January?
They suit different plans. Solang lies on the Manali side of the tunnel, so it avoids the Sissu restrictions, while Sissu gives you the wider Lahaul landscape with more variables.
