Shimla Manali Kasol Itinerary 2026: 7, 8 and 9 Day Routes Without Rushing

You searched for a Shimla Manali Kasol itinerary because you want three very different places in one trip, and you want to know how many days it actually takes without spending your holiday stuck in a car. That is the right question to ask first.
Most people underestimate the driving between these three. They plan seven days, then squeeze Shimla, Manali and Kasol so tight that half the trip becomes a blur of hairpin bends and packed lunches eaten on the move.
We plan this exact circuit for travellers every season, and the difference between a good trip and an exhausting one is almost always the night splits, not the number of places.
Here is how to do the full Shimla Manali Kasol loop in 7, 8 or 9 days at a pace that actually feels like a holiday.
Quick Answer: Are 7, 8 or 9 Days Enough for Shimla, Manali and Kasol?
Yes, and the right number depends on how much you value slow evenings. Seven days is the minimum practical circuit if you start from Chandigarh and skip a full trek.
Eight days is the balanced version because Kasol finally gets a second night instead of a rushed one.
Nine days is the relaxed version, giving Manali an extra night or a buffer while Kasol keeps its two nights.
The night splits we suggest are simple. Seven days means 2 nights Shimla, 3 nights Manali and 1 night Kasol.
Eight days means 2 nights Shimla, 3 nights Manali and 2 nights Kasol. Nine days means 2 nights Shimla, 4 nights Manali and 2 nights Kasol.
One honest warning up front
If you start from Delhi instead of Chandigarh, daytime road travel eats a big chunk of your trip. Plan for overnight transport or an extra travel day rather than pretending a long Delhi transfer is a sightseeing day. It is not.
Want the full circuit built around your dates and group? Start by looking at our Shimla tour packages to see how the loop fits together.
What Is the Best Route for Shimla, Manali and Kasol?

The cleanest loop is Chandigarh to Shimla to Manali to Kasol to Chandigarh. This runs one direction the whole way, so you never backtrack over the same road.
After Manali you drop down toward Bhuntar and turn into Parvati Valley for Kasol. Finishing at Kasol also leaves you further south for the last Chandigarh transfer than if you looped back to Manali first. That saves you real hours on your final day.
Delhi works as an alternative gateway, but do not build your timings around it. The Delhi leg is long, and treating it like Chandigarh will throw your whole schedule off.
7 Day Shimla Manali Kasol Itinerary: The Minimum Comfortable Route

Day 1: Chandigarh to Shimla and a Light Evening
The Shimla District government lists Chandigarh to Shimla as 119 km and about 3 hours 30 minutes by car. Real road time runs longer with traffic, weather and tea stops, so do not treat that as a fixed number.
Keep the first evening light. After you check in, walk the Ridge and Mall Road in central Shimla and eat somewhere unhurried. What most tourists get wrong here is loading day one with sightseeing after a mountain drive.
You will be tired, the light will be fading, and you will not enjoy it. Save the real Shimla exploring for tomorrow.
Day 2: Shimla, Kufri and Jakhoo
Now give Shimla a proper day. Cover central Shimla plus Kufri and Jakhoo depending on road and weather conditions on the morning you set out.
A small tip that changes the experience. Go up to Jakhoo Temple early, before the mid morning crowd and the monkeys get bold. The monkeys near Jakhoo will grab sunglasses, phones and food bags, so hold your things close and do not carry loose plastic packets in your hand.
Day 3: Shimla to Manali
Treat this as a full transfer day, not a sightseeing one.
Route figures differ by source. The Shimla District government page publishes 280 km and about 7 hours 15 minutes by car, while other current travel sources commonly quote around 248 to 250 km and 7 to 8 hours.
To be safe, plan for roughly 250 to 280 kilometres and keep about 7 to 9 hours for the journey depending on route, traffic, weather and stops.
Do not schedule big sightseeing after you reach Manali. Arrive, settle in, eat well, and rest. You have three nights here.
Once you are picking hotels and stops for the Manali leg, our Manali tour packages show how the local days and excursions slot together.
Day 4: Manali Local Sightseeing Without Overpacking It
Build an easy local day around Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, Vashisht and central Manali. The point of this day is pace.
You do not need to turn every spot into a rushed photo stop. Old Manali is best enjoyed slowly, with a long café breakfast and a walk rather than a checklist. Vashisht has natural hot water springs where you can soak for a while. Give yourself permission to sit.
Day 5: Solang Valley Plus Atal Tunnel and Sissu, or Rohtang Pass
Treat this as one mountain excursion day, and pick one direction based on conditions.
Do not try to cover Solang, Rohtang, Atal Tunnel and Sissu all in a single day. Road conditions, permits and the season should decide your choice, not a wish to tick everything off. This is the single biggest planning mistake we correct for travellers on this route.
If you head through the Atal Tunnel toward Sissu in Lahaul and Spiti district, check the official e-Aagman system before you travel and complete the applicable vehicle document for your destination.
If you choose Rohtang Pass, the current official tourism permit system lists a ₹500 permit fee plus a ₹50 congestion charge for a car or jeep.
The permit is valid for one day, to and fro, and access still depends on road conditions and permit availability. Never assume the pass is open, and never buy an unofficial "permit" from a tout at the roadside.
For the Sissu side, our Sissu tour information covers what to expect in the valley. If you would rather spend the day on adventure instead, our guide to adventure activities in Manali lays out the real options.
Day 6: Manali to Kasol and Manikaran
Drive Manali to Kasol, roughly 75 km and 2.5 to 3 hours in normal conditions before you add sightseeing stops.
Fold Manikaran into your Parvati Valley day. It has the famous hot springs and the gurudwara, and you can eat langar there. Then let the evening belong to Kasol rather than rushing onward. Sit by the Parvati River, find a café, and slow down.
To see how the Kasol nights are built into a full circuit, look at our Kasol tour packages.
Day 7: Kasol to Chandigarh
This is a full travel day. Keep it clear.
Current sources conflict on the exact distance, so we will not hand you one absolute number. Several sources quote about 7 to 8 hours, while published distance figures range roughly from 250 to 310 kilometres depending on routing.
Keep the full day for the Kasol to Chandigarh transfer and verify the live navigation estimate on the morning you leave.
Be honest with yourself about one thing. A full Kheerganga trek does not fit into this seven day version unless you remove another sightseeing day. There simply is not room.
8 Day Shimla Manali Kasol Itinerary: The Most Balanced Version

Days 1 to 5: Keep the Same Shimla and Manali Foundation
Hold on to 2 nights in Shimla and 3 nights in Manali. The first five days stay exactly as above.
Here is the key. Use the extra day to improve your pace, not to tempt yourself into adding another far off destination. The whole reason eight days works is that it fixes the rush, and adding a new place would undo that.
Day 6: Manali to Kasol and Manikaran
Drive the same Manali to Kasol leg of roughly 75 km and 2.5 to 3 hours, and visit Manikaran along the way.
Then keep the evening free in Kasol. No onward driving, no pressure. This is the night the seven day route never gives you.
Day 7: Kasol and Chalal at a Slow Pace
Make day seven a local Parvati Valley day. Spend it around Kasol, riverside time, and a gentle walk to Chalal on the other side of the river.
Chalal is a quiet little settlement reached by a short walk from Kasol, and it feels a world away from the main market. This slow day is the main reason the eight day route feels noticeably better than the seven day one. You finally experience Kasol instead of just passing through it.
Day 8: Kasol to Chandigarh
Once more, treat this as a full travel day and check the current route and live road situation before you set off.
This is the version we recommend most often, because it gives you meaningful time in all three destinations without any day feeling stolen by the road.
9 Day Shimla Manali Kasol Itinerary: The Relaxed Route

Days 1 to 5: Shimla, Transfer and Core Manali
Follow the same foundation as the seven and eight day versions. Nothing changes here.
Day 6: Naggar, Kullu or a Real Buffer Day
Use the extra Manali night for Naggar or Kullu, a slow day, or simple recovery from weather and traffic disruption.
A buffer day in the mountains is not an empty day. Roads here close for hours after rain or a landslide, and a spare day means a single bad stretch does not collapse your whole plan.
When conditions are good, you spend it at Naggar Castle or by the river in Kullu. When conditions are bad, you are quietly grateful you kept it.
Day 7: Manali to Kasol and Manikaran
Same 75 km, 2.5 to 3 hour transfer, same Manikaran stop.
Day 8: Kasol, Chalal and Parvati Valley
Give Kasol its second night and keep the relaxed pace. This is your slow Parvati Valley day, the same shape as the eight day plan.
Day 9: Kasol to Chandigarh
Finish the circuit with a dedicated transfer day back to Chandigarh, checking live road conditions before you leave.
Which Itinerary Should You Choose: 7, 8 or 9 Days?

Seven days works if you have fixed leave, you start from Chandigarh, and you are not adding a major trek. It is tight but doable, and it delivers all three places.
Eight days is the strongest all round option. That one extra day fixes the rushed Kasol problem, which is the weakest part of the seven day plan. If you can spare the day, spare it.
Nine days suits travellers who want slower mornings, families, couples, and anyone who values room to move when weather or traffic goes sideways. The buffer day alone is worth it in this region.
How Much Driving Is Actually Involved?

Here are the planning figures to hold in your head.
Chandigarh to Shimla is 119 km and about 3 hours 30 minutes by car according to the Shimla District government page.
Shimla to Manali figures conflict between sources. Use roughly 250 to 280 km and allow about 7 to 9 hours as your planning range.
Manali to Kasol is about 75 km and 2.5 to 3 hours.
Kasol to Chandigarh distance estimates currently vary a lot, roughly 250 to 310 km, with several sources using about 7 to 8 hours. Treat it as a full transfer day and verify live navigation on the morning you travel.
If you are thinking about Delhi instead, note that Kasol to Delhi is above 500 km in current route sources, with road journeys around 9.5 to 12 hours depending on conditions. Plan accordingly and do not trust the shorter figures floating around online.
What Changed for This Route in 2026?

Mandi to Kullu Road Improvement
The Deod (Dyod) and Hanogi tunnels on the Pandoh to Takoli section of the Kiratpur Manali highway opened on 11 September 2026.
Reports said the new tunnel section was meant to ease important bottlenecks between Mandi and Kullu. Initially one tube of each twin tube tunnel was opened.
We will not promise you a fixed time saving, because that depends on your day, but the stretch has long been a pain point and any improvement here helps.
Rohtang Pass Permit Rules in 2026
The official permit site is now rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. The older rohtangpermits.nic.in site announced that applications had moved to the new domain, so use the new one.
Current official figures for a car or jeep are a ₹500 permit fee plus ₹50 congestion charge. The daily tourism quota is 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles. The tourism permit is valid for one day, to and fro.
The portal currently says permits can be applied for the next two days, and it lists issue windows at 10:00 and 16:00. These are current 2026 rules, so recheck the portal shortly before you travel, because administrative rules can change without much notice.
Atal Tunnel, Sissu and e-Aagman
Do not believe the common line that "Sissu needs no permit." That oversimplifies it.
The Rohtang tourism permit is one system. The e-Aagman portal is separate, and it currently says applicants with vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti must apply for an E-Pass.
The portal distinguishes an E-Permit per vehicle for the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, Koksar and Chandertal circuit from an E-Ticket for other places.
For a simple Sissu trip, check the current e-Aagman portal before travelling to confirm which pass or permit category applies to your vehicle and route.
How Should This Itinerary Change by Season?

For spring and early summer, keep any high road excursion dependent on the actual road opening, the weather and permit availability. Do not lock plans around Rohtang being open.
For July and August, monsoon rain can trigger landslides and road closures. The route is not permanently unsafe, nor permanently open. Himachal itself saw rain related closures in 2026, so check conditions on the day and keep a buffer.
For autumn, keep the main itinerary but still verify high road access before you commit to an excursion.
For winter, never assume Rohtang Pass will be accessible. Snow and icy road conditions can also cause temporary restrictions elsewhere on the circuit.
One number worth saving in your phone. The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority provides road blockage and incident information, and its published toll free number is 1077.
Where Should You Stay to Reduce Unnecessary Driving?

Think in neighbourhoods, not random hotels.
Shimla
In Shimla, pick a location that makes the central evening walk practical, so the Ridge and Mall Road are a stroll away rather than another short drive.
Manali
In Manali, weigh the trade off. Central Manali is convenient for markets and food, Old Manali has the café and river atmosphere, and staying toward the Solang side gives you easier morning access for your excursion day. Pick based on what your day five plan needs.
Kasol
In Kasol, stay overnight rather than treating it as another rushed Manali day trip. The whole point of this loop is that Kasol gets its own evening.
A local money saving tip while you are there
Eat where the Parvati Valley locals and long stay travellers eat, a little away from the main market strip, where the same Israeli and Indian plates cost noticeably less than the front row cafés charging for the view.
Private Cab, Bus or Mixed Transport?

For a multi stop circuit with luggage, a single private vehicle is the easiest option. One driver, one boot, no transfers between towns.
Buses cut costs but add coordination and local transfers, which matters more when you are moving between Shimla, Manali and Parvati Valley.
We will not quote fares here because no current verified price was supplied, and we would rather say nothing than give you a made up number.
For Delhi travellers, overnight transport can save your sightseeing days, but check exact schedules and fares for your travel date.
Common Mistakes That Make the Trip Feel Rushed
The first mistake is treating Shimla to Manali as a half day transfer. It is a full day. Plan it that way and stop trying to bolt sightseeing onto the end.
The second is cramming Solang, Rohtang, Atal Tunnel and Sissu into one giant checklist regardless of conditions. Pick one direction and enjoy it.
The third is visiting Kasol as a rushed out and back trip from Manali when your itinerary already gives you an overnight. Use the night you planned.
The fourth is adding Kheerganga to the seven day route without removing anything else. The trek needs real time, and something has to give.
The fifth is booking an inflexible onward flight or train too close to the end of a long mountain transfer. If the road closes, you miss it. Leave a gap.
The last is ignoring Rohtang permit rules or e-Aagman requirements until the morning of travel. That is how excursion days get wasted at a checkpoint.
Planning a Custom Shimla Manali Kasol Trip
Your final route should follow your real needs, the travel month, the age mix in your group, the kind of hotels you like, whether snow is a priority, how much adventure you want, and whether you are café and slow evening people or more sightseeing people.
What we tell our travellers is simple. Choose your night splits first, then choose your places. Get the pace right and every version of this trip works. Get it wrong and even nine days feels rushed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days are enough for Shimla, Manali and Kasol?
Seven days is the practical minimum from Chandigarh without a major trek. Eight days is the most balanced, and nine days is the most relaxed.
Can I cover Shimla, Manali and Kasol in 7 days?
Yes, with 2 nights Shimla, 3 nights Manali and 1 night Kasol. It is tight but comfortable if you start from Chandigarh and skip a full trek.
Is 8 days enough for Shimla, Manali and Kasol?
Yes, and it is our most recommended version. The extra day gives Kasol a second night, which fixes the rushed feeling of the seven day plan.
What should I add if I have 9 days?
Add a Manali buffer day for Naggar, Kullu, or simple recovery from weather and traffic. It gives you breathing room in an unpredictable region.
Should I visit Kasol before or after Manali?
After Manali. You descend toward Bhuntar into Parvati Valley, and finishing at Kasol leaves you further south for the Chandigarh transfer.
How long does Shimla to Manali take by road?
Plan for roughly 250 to 280 km and about 7 to 9 hours depending on route, traffic, weather and stops. Treat it as a full transfer day.
How far is Kasol from Manali?
About 75 km, which takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours in normal conditions before you add sightseeing stops.
Is it better to stay overnight in Kasol or visit from Manali?
Stay overnight. A day trip from Manali wastes hours on the road, while an overnight lets you enjoy the river and cafés in the evening.
Should I choose Rohtang Pass or Atal Tunnel and Sissu?
Pick one based on road conditions, permits and season. Rohtang needs its tourism permit, while Sissu in Lahaul and Spiti needs e-Aagman clearance.
Do I need a Rohtang Pass permit in 2026?
Yes. For a car or jeep the portal lists a ₹500 permit fee plus a ₹50 congestion charge, valid one day to and fro. Apply at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in.
Do I need e-Aagman to visit Sissu?
The e-Aagman portal says vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti must apply for an E-Pass. Check the exact document category on the portal before you travel.
Which month is best for a Shimla Manali Kasol trip?
Spring to early summer and autumn are strong for road access. Whatever the month, keep high road excursions dependent on weather and permits.
Is July or August suitable for this itinerary?
It can be, but monsoon rain brings landslides and closures. Himachal saw rain related closures in 2026, so keep a buffer day and check conditions daily.
