Manali is not one of the formal NPD endpoints. You reach Darcha from Manali on the old established road, and only there do you join the project.

Think of it as three practical sections. Darcha to Shinkun La to Padum is the first. Padum toward Nerak and Chilling to Nimmu is the second. Nimmu onward to Leh on the old highway is the third.

Is the Nimmu Padum Darcha Road Open in 2026?

The Darcha to Shinkula road officially reopened from both sides for all vehicle categories on 10 May 2026 after BRO finished snow clearance. That is the date that matters for this season.

Snow, rain, landslides, active road work, and the local police or administration can all change movement at short notice. A road that was fine yesterday can be shut by lunchtime today.

For the Padum to Nerak to Chilling to Nimmu stretch, July 2026 traveller information is a mess. 

Some reports still mentioned Wednesday and Sunday movement, while later July travellers said they got through on other days. 

Traffic movement on the Padum to Nimmu section can still be regulated around construction and road work, so confirm the latest permitted movement days locally in Padum before starting this stretch.

What Route Do You Follow from Manali to Zanskar?

You drive from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, then Sissu, Tandi, Keylong, Jispa, and finally Darcha. This is the familiar Lahaul road, and it is the easy part of the journey.

We are not quoting an exact Manali to Darcha distance here, because the sources we trust genuinely conflict on it. We would rather tell you that than hand you a confident wrong number.

The Lahaul and Spiti district website places Darcha at about 3,500 metres and calls it an ideal acclimatisation base and the jumping off point for Padum over Shinkun La.

What we tell our travellers is simple: sleep in Lahaul first. Do not race straight from Manali over a high pass on day one. Break the climb.

Darcha to Shinkun La

This is the high, weather-sensitive heart of the route. Everything about your trip's success sits on this section.

Shinkun La sits at about 5,000 metres, or above 16,500 feet. We use the rounded figure on purpose, because official and travel sources publish slightly different exact elevations, and we will not pretend to a precision nobody agrees on.

Road restrictions on this stretch can change with snow, ice, and BRO clearance work. This is exactly the part that gets 4x4-only rules slapped on it at short notice.

Shinkun La to Gonbo Rangjon and Kargyak

Once you cross the pass, the road drops into Zanskar. The land opens up and the character of the drive changes completely.

Gonbo Rangjon is the signature natural landmark on this side, a striking sacred peak that rises alone and tells you that you have properly entered Zanskar. In our experience it is the moment people stop the vehicle without being asked.

Kargyak is an important inhabited stop on this southern Zanskar section, one of the first real villages you meet coming down.

How Is the New NPD Route Different from the Old Way to Zanskar?

The traditional way into Zanskar came from the north. You drove Kargil, Rangdum, over Pensi La, into Padum. That was the only road approach for decades.

The northern NPD section toward Nimmu adds another possibility: continuing toward Leh without doubling back through Kargil, when the road and the traffic schedule allow it. That "when it allows" part is doing real work in that sentence.

Can You Drive from Padum Directly to Leh via Nimmu?

Yes, in principle. The route runs Padum toward Zangla, Nerak, Chilling, and Nimmu, then joins the old highway to Leh.

Nimmu is the NPD terminus. From there you are back on the established, well-travelled road, so the hard part is behind you once you reach it.

Now the warning, and read this twice

The fixed operating days for the Nerak and Chilling stretch are conflicting in 2026 reporting and must be verified right before you depart. Do not treat Wednesday and Sunday as a permanent rule, because later travellers this season reported otherwise.

What Are the Road Conditions Like in 2026?

Manali to Darcha is the comfortable part. This is the standard Lahaul road through the Atal Tunnel and past Keylong, and it holds up well.

Darcha to Padum is a serious stretch. A Government of India year end review reported roughly 201 km of the 298 km NPD project had been black topped by the end of 2024. 

So no, the whole route is not uniformly paved, and anyone telling you it is a smooth highway is selling you something.

Widening, surfacing, and infrastructure work have continued since, and conditions shift after snowfall, rain, or fresh construction. 

August 2026 reporting confirmed the Director General Border Roads reviewed ongoing NPD road and Shinkun La Tunnel progress, so this remains an active work site, not a finished one.

Padum to Nimmu carries the same caution. Treat the surface as variable and plan for slow going in patches.

Do You Need a 4x4 for the Manali to Zanskar Road?

The nuanced answer is the correct one here. On 10 May 2026 the Darcha to Shinkula section reopened for all vehicle types. But only days earlier, 4x4 restrictions had been reported around Shinkun La.

So a high-clearance 4x4 is the safer planning choice for tourists, full stop. It gives you the margin when a stretch turns rough or a rule tightens.

Fuel is available around Padum, but supply can be variable, so top up whenever you find reliable fuel rather than waiting for the next town.

For comfortable stays before the pass, look at Keylong and Jispa. On the Zanskar side, Kargyak, Purne, and Padum offer simpler accommodation.

Is There a Mobile Network on the Route?

Patchy is the honest word. Coverage is thin enough that you should never build the journey around continuous mobile data.

We are not claiming zero signal on every kilometre between Darcha and Padum, because coverage does flicker in and out. Just do not depend on it when it matters.

Do You Need a Permit for the NPD Road?

Ladakh removed the old Inner Line Permit requirement for domestic Indian tourists generally. That is the big shift most people have not caught up with.

For a Zanskar-only Indian itinerary, current 2026 specialist guidance says you normally do not need a separate Zanskar permit. So an Indian traveller doing this route is largely permit-free.

It is a 4.1 km twin-tube tunnel, being built at around 15,800 feet on the NPD axis, and its purpose is all-weather connectivity. The first blast took place in July 2024, and work remained under active review in August 2026.

A previously reported contractual completion target is August 2028, but this should be treated as a project target rather than a guaranteed public opening date.

Why care? Until the tunnel is operational, the Shinkun La surface crossing stays vulnerable to seasonal snow closures. The tunnel is the thing that will one day make this an all-weather road. That day is not 2026.

What Is the Best Time to Drive the Manali to Zanskar Route?

Aim for late June through September as your planning window. Not a guarantee, a window.

The 2026 season shows exactly why fixed opening dates fail you. Restrictions changed through spring, and the Darcha to Shinkula section only fully reopened to all vehicle categories on 10 May. Someone who booked around a rumoured April date would have been stuck.

Spend your first Zanskar night at Kargyak or Purne, then continue to Padum. Give Padum a proper exploration day if time allows, because it is your base for Phugtal and the wider valley.

Only after confirming current access, take the northern NPD road toward Nimmu, and from there run the old highway into Leh.

Build in a buffer. If Padum to Nimmu is temporarily restricted, you want a spare day or a known alternate exit, not a forced crossing on a bad day.

It is a poor choice if you have a rigid flight to catch straight after, if you need guaranteed daily public transport, or if you cannot adapt to altitude and sudden road closures. 

Current specialist reporting says a regular scheduled HRTC Keylong or Manali to Padum service still cannot be relied upon in 2026, so do not build a plan around a bus that may not run.
