Manali to Zanskar Itinerary: 5 and 7 Day Plans That Actually Work (2026)

The problem most people hit when planning a Manali to Zanskar trip is simple. They copy a five day plan off Instagram, book fixed leave, and then a road advisory near Shinku La blows the whole thing apart on day two.

This route is stunning, but it punishes tight schedules. We have run this corridor enough times to know exactly where plans break. So this guide by Travel Coffee gives you two honest itineraries and tells you which one we would actually pick.

Quick Answer: How Many Days Do You Need for Manali to Zanskar?

Five days is the minimum sensible Manali to Manali plan, and only if you mainly want Shinku La, Gonbo Rangjon, Phugtal Monastery and Padum. It works, but it has almost no spare time.

Seven days is the better Manali to Zanskar itinerary. It adds a proper Padum sightseeing day plus one flexible day that can absorb weather or road trouble.

Whichever you choose, confirm the exact Darcha to Shinku La to Padum road status on the morning you travel. This branch does not always match the main Manali to Leh status.

What Route Do You Take from Manali to Zanskar?

The line looks like this. Manali to the Atal Tunnel, then Sissu, Tandi, Keylong, Jispa, Darcha, up over Shinku La, past Gonbo Rangjon, through Kargyak, down to Purne, and finally into Padum.

You leave the familiar Manali to Leh axis at Darcha. That turn is where the trip stops being a normal highway drive and becomes a proper Zanskar road trip.

Here is what most tourists get wrong. They treat "the road to Leh is open" as proof that Zanskar is open. It is not. The Zanskar branch clears on its own timeline, and you have to check it separately.

Manali to Jispa

Manali to Jispa is roughly 91 to 93 km. Jispa sits at around 3,200 m.

That distance looks tiny, and you could push further on day one. Do not. The point of stopping at Jispa is to sleep at a moderate altitude before you climb over a very high pass the next morning.

In our experience, the people who rush past Jispa toward Shinku La on the first day are the same ones nursing headaches by evening. A calm night at Jispa fixes a lot of that.

Jispa to Purne via Darcha and Shinku La

At Darcha, you leave the Leh road and turn toward Zanskar. This is the real start of the remote section.

From here you climb over Shinku La, then drop past Gonbo Rangjon, the striking sacred peak that suddenly appears in front of you, through Kargyak and down to Purne.

Published sources give conflicting Jispa to Purne distance figures, so plan this section around daylight, road conditions and current navigation rather than relying on one fixed kilometre figure.

Purne to Padum

Purne is the most useful base for Phugtal Monastery. Staying here means you can start the trek early instead of driving in tired.

Padum is the main service and accommodation centre in Zanskar, at around 3,657 m. It is where you find stays, food, and fuel.

Current sources also differ on the exact Purne to Padum distance, so check the latest route distance locally or on your navigation app before travelling.

Is the Manali to Zanskar Road Open in 2026?

Short version: it opened this year, but the branch status shifts, so you verify it fresh.

The Darcha to Shinkula road officially reopened from both sides for vehicular traffic on 10 May 2026, after BRO finished snow clearance and restoration.

Just before that, a road or bridge failure near Shinku La temporarily disrupted Padum to Darcha connectivity on 1 May 2026. So the season started with a wobble.

Police can regulate vehicle movement based on road and weather even when the road is technically open. A green status does not always mean free flow.

When we checked the official Lahaul and Spiti road page on 20 August 2026, it showed Manali to Keylong open and Keylong to Leh open, but it did not separately list Darcha to Shinku La. A separate road tracker listed Darcha to Shinkula open on 27 August 2026.

That gap is the whole point. The main highway status and the Zanskar branch status are reported differently. That is why you check the exact Darcha to Shinku La to Padum stretch the morning you leave, not the week before.

Manali to Zanskar 5 Day Itinerary: What Is the Minimum Plan That Works?

Treat this as the shortest plan we would call sensible. It is not a relaxed Zanskar holiday. It is a focused run to the highlights.

Day 1: Manali to Jispa

Drive Manali to Atal Tunnel to Sissu to Tandi to Keylong to Jispa. That is about 91 to 93 km.

Top up fuel around Tandi. This matters more than it sounds, and we will come back to it.

Sleep around Jispa at roughly 3,200 m. Keep the afternoon easy. Do not tack on another high point just because you have hours to spare. Your body needs the quiet.

Day 2: Jispa to Purne via Shinku La and Gonbo Rangjon

Start early. Genuinely early, not "we'll leave after breakfast" early.

Turn toward Zanskar at Darcha and cross Shinku La in the morning, only if the road and any police advisory allow it. Mornings give you the best surface and the most daylight buffer.

Do not linger at the top of the pass. That altitude is not a place to sit around for photos. Drop past Gonbo Rangjon and Kargyak and carry on to Purne.

No fixed daily kilometre figure is given here because published Jispa to Purne distances vary. Plan this day around an early start, available daylight, road conditions and current navigation instead.

Day 3: Purne to Phugtal Monastery and Padum

Start the Phugtal Monastery trek early. From the Purne approach it is roughly 6 to 7 km one way and about 2 to 3 hours walking each way, depending on your pace.

One honest caveat. The roadhead keeps shifting as construction moves along, so your actual walking distance can change from what you read online. Ask locally at Purne before you set off.

Phugtal is the reason a lot of people do this whole trip. A monastery built into a cliff around a cave, reached on foot, with almost nobody rushing you. Come back to Purne, then continue to Padum.

Day 4: Padum to Jispa

This long return drive is the compromise that makes five days possible. You are trading a full Padum sightseeing day for the shorter schedule.

Leave early and cross back over Shinku La only after confirming that day's road status. Do not assume it is the same as when you came in.

Day 5: Jispa to Manali

Return via Keylong, Tandi, Sissu and the Atal Tunnel. Keep this day comparatively relaxed after the big drive the day before.

So who should pick five days? Travellers on fixed leave who care more about Shinku La, Gonbo Rangjon and Phugtal than about seeing all of Padum. If that is you, this plan delivers the core.

Manali to Zanskar 7 Day Itinerary: The Plan We Recommend

Seven days is our preferred version because it takes the pressure off. One road delay stops being a disaster and becomes a minor reshuffle.

Day 1: Manali to Jispa

Same acclimatisation focused on the first day. Manali to Jispa, fuel at Tandi, easy evening at around 3,200 m.

Day 2: Jispa to Purne

Cross Shinku La early, stop at Gonbo Rangjon to take it in properly, and stay around Purne. Same remote drop into Zanskar, just with less rush baked in.

Day 3: Phugtal Monastery to Padum

Trek to Phugtal in the morning, roughly 6 to 7 km and 2 to 3 hours each way, then continue to Padum afterward. Keep the evening free to rest and eat properly.

Day 4: Padum Local Sightseeing

This is the day the five day plan sacrifices. Use it for a sensible mix of Karsha Monastery, Stongde Monastery, Sani and Zangla.

Karsha is the big one, the largest monastery in Zanskar, stacked up a hillside above Padum. We will not quote entry fees or exact distances because we would only be inventing them, and this whole article runs on real numbers.

Day 5: Flexible Zanskar Day or Pensi La and Drang Drung Excursion

Treat this as a flexible day, and that flexibility is the feature, not wasted time.

If the road, weather, driver and vehicle are all in good shape, you can consider heading toward Pensi La and the Drang Drung Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in this part of the Himalayas. 

We are not publishing a fixed Padum to Pensi La distance or drive time because road conditions and reported figures can vary. Check the latest route information locally before planning the excursion.

If conditions are poor, keep this as a slow Padum day or a straight weather buffer. Either way, the day earns its place.

Day 6: Padum to Jispa

Return across Shinku La with the whole day in hand instead of racing the light. Confirm the road status before you leave Padum.

Day 7: Jispa to Manali

Roll back to Manali at an easy pace via Keylong, Tandi and the Atal Tunnel.

This plan works better for first timers, families, and anyone who does not want a single road delay to detonate the whole trip. What we tell our travellers is straight: if you can spare the leave, the seventh day is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy on this route.

Which Is Better: 5 Days or 7 Days for Zanskar?

Five days covers the core Manali to Zanskar experience. Shinku La, Gonbo Rangjon, Phugtal, a night in Padum. But it has almost no spare time, and this is not a route that respects tight plans.

Seven days adds a real Padum sightseeing day and one flexible day. That flexible day is what saves you when a pass closes or a river crossing swells.

We would choose the seven day plan every time we can. Pick five only when your leave genuinely will not stretch.

What Vehicle Do You Need for Shinku La in 2026?

A high ground clearance SUV is the sensible minimum for most travellers, and a 4x4 is strongly recommended.

Actual 4x4 only advisories have appeared near Shinku La during difficult 2026 conditions. That is not us being cautious for the sake of it, that is what has been enforced on the ground.

We are not saying 2WD vehicles are permanently banned. But low clearance hatchbacks and sedans are not recommended for the full crossing. The water sections and loose surfaces past Darcha are where they get into trouble.

One warning

Obey the current police advisory even if your car did the route fine last year. Conditions change, and last season's success proves nothing about today's surface.

Where Should You Refuel Between Manali and Padum?

Treat Tandi as your last reliable full tank stop before the Zanskar diversion. Fill up completely here, every time, without debating it.

Official IndianOil listings currently show Zanskar Filling Station and Marthang Filling Station around Padum and Karsha. That is good news, but do not treat it as a guarantee that fuel will be in stock on the exact day you arrive.

Here is a local money saving angle

Carry enough spare fuel for your vehicle’s range and planned route, especially on the remote stretch between Tandi and Padum. The exact amount depends on your mileage, tank capacity and any detours you expect to take.

We are not quoting a petrol price here because it shifts, and a made up figure would just mislead you.

Do You Need a Permit for Manali to Zanskar in 2026?

For Indian travellers, current 2026 guidance says an ILP is not required just to travel the Manali to Darcha to Shinku La to Padum corridor.

That said, your IDs and vehicle details can still be checked or recorded at points along the way. Keep them handy so you are not fishing through your bag at a checkpoint.

Do not stretch this into "all of Ladakh is permit free," because it is not. Foreign nationals, and anyone entering other protected or restricted parts of Ladakh, must verify current PAP or RAP requirements before travelling.

What Is the Best Time for a Manali to Zanskar Road Trip?

Use late June through September as your conservative planning window. That is when the route is most likely to be genuinely drivable rather than technically open.

May and early June can mean snow clearance, slush, unstable sections and traffic restrictions. It can be spectacular, but it is a gamble, and it suits experienced mountain drivers more than first timers.

Late September and October get more exposed to fresh snow and sudden closures. We will not promise you a fixed opening or closing date, because this route does not have one. Snow decides.

How Difficult Is the Phugtal Monastery Trek?

The Purne to Phuktal walk is roughly 6 to 7 km one way and takes about 2 to 3 hours each way. It is not a brutal trek, but you are doing it at altitude, so it feels harder than the numbers suggest.

Road construction keeps moving the practical roadhead, which can shorten or shift the walk. Check locally at Purne on the day rather than trusting a distance you read months ago.

If you also need to reach Padum the same day, start early. Beating the heat and the crowds is one thing. Not being caught out by a long walk plus a long drive is the real reason.

What Should You Pack for the Shinku La and Zanskar Route?

Carry offline navigation, because your phone maps will fail you out here. Bring cash, since digital payments are unreliable to non-existent past the highway towns.

Pack warm layers even in summer, plenty of water, snacks, and power banks. Mobile coverage disappears for long stretches, so your phone is a camera and a torch, not a lifeline.

On the vehicle side, carry puncture repair equipment, a tyre inflator, and any spares specific to your car. A flat tyre with no fix is a very long, cold problem out here.

On medicines, we will not prescribe anything. For altitude medication or any personal medical concern, talk to a qualified doctor before the trip. That advice is worth more than anything a travel blog can tell you.

Can You Continue from Padum to Leh Instead of Returning to Manali?

Yes. Padum now connects toward Nimmu and Leh as part of the Nimmu Padum Darcha corridor, so you can run it as a one way traverse instead of doubling back.

There is a catch. The Padum to Nimmu stretch has had construction related traffic controls. A May 2026 advisory permitted Nimmu to Padum traffic only on Sunday and Wednesday at that time.

Read that carefully. That was a dated May 2026 advisory, not a permanent schedule. Do not build a trip around those two days assuming they still apply.

What If Shinku La Closes During Your Trip?

Do not force a closed or unstable pass. No view is worth being stuck on a failing road at 5,000 metres.

This is exactly why the seven day itinerary carries a flexible day. If Shinku La shuts, you wait it out around Jispa, Sissu or Manali and rework the plan once it reopens.

We will never promise you that a closure clears the same day. Sometimes it does, sometimes it takes longer. Flexibility is your only real defence.
