Is Baralacha Pass Open in 2026?

BRO finished restoring the Manali to Leh highway on 12 May 2026, after a 42 day snow clearance operation that started on 27 March. Civilian light motor vehicles were then allowed through the Darcha to Sarchu section via Baralacha in mid May.

On 20 August 2026, the official District Lahaul and Spiti road status page listed Delhi to Manali, Manali to Keylong and Keylong to Leh as open.

Here's the honest catch

A local report dated 1 September 2026 said the Manali to Keylong highway had been temporarily closed after heavy snowfall. So we cannot tell you "Baralacha is open today" as an absolute fact.

A seasonal opening does not promise you uninterrupted access. Check the road status on the morning you actually leave.

How Do You Reach Baralacha Pass From Manali?

The Main 2026 Route via Atal Tunnel

Here's your route in order: Manali, Atal Tunnel, Sissu, Tandi, Keylong, Jispa, Darcha, Zingzing Bar, Suraj Tal, and finally Baralacha La.

Plan for roughly 145 to 150 km one way. Exact map readings shift depending on where in Manali you start and which app you trust.

For time, we won't hand you one false number. Depending on traffic at the tunnel, road condition after Darcha, weather and how often you stop for photos, this ranges from about 4 to 8 hours one way. Treat it as a full mountain day, not a quick drive.

Is the Atal Tunnel Route Better Than Going Over Rohtang?

The Atal Tunnel is 9.02 km long and saves you about 46 km and 4 to 5 hours versus the old road alignment. That's not a small saving. That's the difference between reaching Jispa relaxed and reaching it exhausted after dark.

The modern Baralacha trip uses the tunnel. Rohtang is now a separate sightseeing route with its own tourism permit system, and you don't need it just to reach Baralacha.

Can You Do Manali to Baralacha and Back in One Day?

It can be done when roads and weather fully cooperate. But it makes for a very long day with almost no buffer if anything goes wrong.

How Do You Reach Baralacha Pass From Delhi?

Delhi to Manali First

The official HPTDC road distance between Delhi and Manali is about 570 km, and HPTDC lists roughly a 14 hour journey for its Delhi to Manali coach.

Your real options are simple. Take an overnight bus, drive privately, or fly to Kullu Manali Airport at Bhuntar, about 50 km from Manali, then continue by road. We won't quote flight fares here because they swing wildly by season and date.

What Is a Realistic Delhi to Baralacha Plan?

As a broad planning figure, Delhi to Baralacha via Manali and the Atal Tunnel works out to about 715 km. That's roughly 570 km to Manali plus around 145 km onward. Don't treat it as an exact navigation reading, because it isn't one.

Here's where people trip up. Reaching Manali off an overnight Delhi bus and immediately pushing to Baralacha is a bad plan when the bus runs late or you land in Manali in the afternoon.

A June 2026 solo traveller report described exactly this. A delayed Delhi bus forced the rider to give up on continuing toward Jispa that day, because it had simply become too late to safely start the higher route.

The slower, smarter sequence is Delhi to Manali, then Manali to Jispa or Keylong, then Baralacha the next morning.

Can You Take the Delhi to Leh HRTC Bus Through Baralacha?

HRTC resumed its Delhi to Keylong to Leh bus on 26 May 2026.

The Delhi departure is 12:10 PM, and the full Delhi to Leh fare reported by the HRTC regional manager is ₹1,839. The route passes through Jispa, Darcha, Baralacha La, Sarchu and Tanglang La.

Read this part carefully. This is a through public bus meant to carry you all the way to Leh, not a Baralacha sightseeing tour. 

Do not assume the bus will allow a sightseeing stop, boarding or drop off at Baralacha Pass, because halt and boarding rules depend on the service schedule and HRTC operations.

How Do You Reach Baralacha Pass From Leh?

Leh to Baralacha Route

The order runs: Leh, Upshi, Tanglang La, More Plains, Pang, Lachulung La, Nakee La, Gata Loops, Sarchu, then Baralacha La.

Use around 280 km as a planning estimate. Online sources genuinely disagree on the exact kilometres, so plan this as a full mountain driving day rather than trusting one map number.

Do You Need to Acclimatise Before Leaving Leh?

Yes. The District Leh administration currently asks tourists arriving in Leh to spend at least 48 hours acclimatising before heading to higher altitude areas.

This matters a lot for a Baralacha approach, because the pass sits at roughly 4,890 metres. Rushing straight from your Leh flight toward these heights is how altitude sickness starts.

Should You Do Baralacha as a Return Trip From Leh?

Is It Better to Reach Baralacha From Manali or Leh?

From Manali, Baralacha is much closer and fits neatly into a Lahaul trip. You can base yourself in Jispa or Keylong and reach the pass fresh the next morning.

From Leh, the drive is far longer. The one advantage is that travellers who've already done their required Leh acclimatisation have had more time at altitude, so their bodies are readier for the heights.

Can You Reach Baralacha Pass by Bus, Taxi, Bike or Self Drive?

Bus

The HRTC Delhi to Leh through service we described above runs past Baralacha. Separately, HPTDC lists its Manali to Leh service as a two day journey with a halt at Keylong, and says those coaches run seasonally from July to September. 

HPTDC puts its modern Manali to Leh route via the Atal Tunnel at about 425 km. There's no dedicated local Baralacha sightseeing bus, so don't wait for one.

Taxi

A local taxi with an experienced Himalayan driver earns its money here. Road conditions and traffic controls shift day to day, and a driver who knows the surface after Darcha is worth having. We won't quote a current fare, because taxi rates move with fuel prices and season.

Bike or Self Drive

Past Darcha, expect rough surfaces, snowmelt, water crossings and stretches of active road work. We won't promise you that any specific sedan, hatchback, bike or SUV is guaranteed to cross. Whether your vehicle makes it depends entirely on the road condition that day.

Do You Need a Permit for Baralacha Pass in 2026?

This is where competitors mix things up, so read slowly.

There's no separate Baralacha Pass sightseeing ticket or entry fee that we can verify. But the official e-Aagman portal says vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti must apply through its e-pass system. 

The portal splits this into an e-permit for its specified Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, Koksar and Chandratal circuit, and an e-ticket for other places.

Confirm the exact option for your itinerary on the official e-Aagman portal before you travel.

The Rohtang permit is a completely different thing. If you deliberately use the Rohtang tourism route, the current government system lists a car or jeep permit fee of ₹500, a congestion charge of ₹50, and a daily quota of 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles. 

Don't confuse this with e-Aagman. They are not the same system.

What Is the Best Time to Reach Baralacha Pass?

Treat June to September as your normal practical season, not a guaranteed calendar.

May depends on how far BRO has cleared the snow. Early June can still hold freshly cleared snow and unstable sections. Summer brings snowmelt that disrupts the approach roads. Later September raises the chance of fresh snowfall shutting the pass.

The 1 September 2026 temporary closure is the perfect reminder. Even inside the good season, the mountain does what it wants. Verify same day, every time.

Where Should You Stop for Fuel, Food and an Overnight Stay?

Tandi is the key reliable refuelling point on the Manali side. Fill up here properly, because reliable fuel gets scarce beyond it.

For sleeping, Jispa and Keylong are your practical bases before Baralacha. Both have decent stays and warm food, and both leave you a manageable morning run to the pass. If you're continuing toward Leh, Sarchu becomes the relevant halt.

Don't plan to stay at Baralacha itself. There's nothing there for an overnight, and the altitude is no place to be stuck after dark.

What Can You See on the Way to Baralacha?

Sissu gives you your first big Lahaul view, waterfall and all. Jispa sits pretty along the Bhaga river and makes a calm overnight. Higher up, Deepak Tal and then Suraj Tal appear as the land turns barren and dramatic.

Suraj Tal lies close to Baralacha La and is tied to the source of the Bhaga River. By the time you reach it, the green is long gone and the landscape feels like another planet.

Two Days From Manali

Day 1 takes you from Manali through the Atal Tunnel and Sissu to Keylong or Jispa. Settle in, eat well, sleep at altitude.

Day 2 runs from Keylong or Jispa through Darcha, Zingzing Bar and Suraj Tal up to Baralacha, then back down to the lower valley, unless you're carrying on to Leh.

Three Days From Delhi

Day 1 is Delhi to Manali. Day 2 is Manali to Keylong or Jispa. Day 3 is Baralacha, then either a return or onward travel depending on your wider plan.

This spacing is what saves the trip. The traveller in that June 2026 report got caught precisely because he tried to compress this.

From Leh

Only attempt Baralacha after your required Leh acclimatisation. And frame it as part of the Leh to Manali road journey rather than a return trip. It's a natural crossing, not a day outing.
