How Many Days Do You Need for Himachal in 2026? Choose a 5, 7 or 10-Day Route

Planning a Himachal trip in 2026 starts with deciding how many days you need to explore the destinations comfortably. A 5 day trip may be enough for Shimla or Manali, while 7 or 10 days give you more time to explore multiple destinations, including quieter valleys and offbeat places.
This guide by Travel Coffee explains how to choose between 5, 7 and 10 day Himachal itineraries based on your available time, travel budget, preferred destinations and sightseeing interests.
It will help you understand what you can realistically cover in each trip duration and which route is more suitable for your travel plans.
Quick Answer
How many days do you need for Himachal? Pick 5-days for one Manali-based holiday or 7-days for Shimla plus Manali. Pick 10-days for a wider Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie circuit.
All three plans start at Chandigarh. The five and seven-day trips end at Chandigarh. The ten-day trip ends at Pathankot.
Your journey from Delhi, Mumbai or any other home city sits outside these day counts. So a five-day plan does not give you five full sightseeing days. The first and last days go mostly to the road.
How Do You Choose Between 5, 7 and 10 Days in Himachal?

Here is what most first-time visitors get wrong. They count places, not road hours. A list of six towns looks great on paper, but Himachal roads wind, climb and slow down, and a 250 km stretch can take most of your day.
In our experience planning Himachal trips, the number of hotel changes decides how tired you feel. The number of days matters less. Fewer check-ins usually mean a happier holiday, especially with kids or parents.
So start with one question. How much time do you want to spend in a car? Your answer usually picks the right trip length for you.
Five days: Choose one region
A five-day, four-night plan works best when you stay in one place. We use Manali as the base because it gives you local sightseeing, Solang Valley and a conditional Sissu day without another long transfer.
Your four hotel nights all fall in Manali. That means one check-in, one check-out and no packing every morning.
Be honest with yourself about the travel days, though. Day 1 and Day 5 mostly go to the Chandigarh to Manali drive. You really get about three sightseeing days in the middle.
Seven days: Visit two main destinations
Seven days give you Shimla and Manali, with two hotel nights in Shimla and four in Manali. This is what we tell our travellers as the default for a first Himachal trip.
You see the colonial side of Himachal in Shimla and the mountain-valley side in Manali. You also keep enough time in Manali to enjoy it after the long drive.
The trade-off is Day 3. The Shimla to Manali transfer takes most of the day, so treat it as a road day, not a sightseeing day.
Ten days: Explore different sides of Himachal
Ten days open up the classic hill-station circuit: Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie. You get nine hotel nights, split two in Shimla, three in Manali, two in Dharamshala and two in Dalhousie.
This route shows you four very different towns, from Shimla's Ridge to the Tibetan culture of McLeod Ganj. But it also packs in several big transfer days, and it finishes at Pathankot, not Chandigarh.
If you travel with small children, choose five or seven days and keep one base for as long as possible. Kids handle one long drive well. Four long drives in ten days test everyone.
If you travel with older parents, add rest time after every major transfer. Do not plan heavy sightseeing on the evening you arrive.
If you get carsick on winding roads, the ten-day route will feel long. Our team recommends the seven-day plan for most people who are unsure about long hours on hill roads.
If you want to see how a full itinerary reads when the inclusions are spelled out, browse our Himachal Tour Packages and use the same checks on ours that you use on anyone else's.
Is 5-Days Enough for Himachal? A Realistic Manali Itinerary

Yes, five days work well if you choose one region and stop chasing the whole state. This plan runs from Chandigarh to Chandigarh, with four hotel nights in Manali.
If you want us to arrange the stay and cab for this kind of trip, our Manali tour packages give you a good starting point to customize.
Day 1: Chandigarh to Manali
Plan this day for driving and nothing else. The road from Chandigarh to Manali runs roughly 300 to 320 km depending on routing. Our route guide gives about 300 to 310 km, and HPTDC lists 320 km.
Our route guide allows 8 to 10 hours of road time, or 9 to 11 hours with typical breaks. Traffic, weather and roadwork can stretch that further.
Here is a timing tip that changes the whole day: leave Chandigarh as early as you comfortably can. An early start gets you through the hill sections in daylight and into Manali before dinner.
Do not expect real sightseeing after you arrive. Check in, eat, walk a little if you feel like it, and sleep. Overnight in Manali.
Day 2: Explore Manali Locally
Keep today close to town. Good options include Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, Vashisht and a slow evening in the market or a café.
You do not need to tick every one of these off. Manali traffic can slow short distances a lot in peak season, so pick two or three and enjoy them properly.
A relaxed second day also helps your body settle after the long drive. Overnight in Manali.
Day 3: Visit Solang Valley
Solang Valley sits about 13 km from Manali, which makes it an easy half-day or full-day trip. You get wide valley views and open slopes, often with snow in colder months.
Adventure activities at Solang depend on weather, local operators and current restrictions. Not every activity runs every day or every season, so confirm on the day.
Activity prices vary depending on the type of adventure, duration, season, weather conditions and operator. Check the latest rates with authorised local operators before booking, and confirm what is included in the price, such as safety equipment and instructor fees.
Our team recommends going in the morning, before the crowd and the afternoon weather build up. Overnight in Manali.
Day 4: Choose Sissu or a Lower-Altitude Alternative
Sissu sits about 38 to 40 km from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, according to our published route guide. In good conditions, the drive takes about 1 to 1.5 hours each way, and delays happen.
Now the part many travellers mix up. The Rohtang Pass tourism permit and the e-Aagman vehicle requirement for Lahaul and Spiti are two different things. One does not replace the other.
Before you head to Sissu, check the official e-Aagman portal for the correct category for your vehicle. Also check current police and road restrictions on the Atal Tunnel side.
E-Aagman registration requirements and applicable fees for Sissu may vary depending on your vehicle type, travel route and current local regulations.
Check the official e-Aagman portal before your trip to confirm the correct vehicle category, any applicable charges and entry restrictions for your travel date.
If snow, weather or police orders restrict Sissu access, switch the day to Naggar or other easy Kullu Valley sightseeing. You lose nothing by keeping a backup ready.
If Sissu is the main reason for your trip, our Sissu tour packages build that day around current access. Overnight in Manali.
Day 5: Return to Chandigarh
Keep this day for the drive back. Do not plan a full extra sightseeing schedule on the way.
If you have a flight or train from Chandigarh, leave a wide gap for delays. In our experience planning Himachal trips, a tight onward connection causes more stress than any mountain road.
Still unsure whether five days will feel too short for your group? Send us your dates and we will tell you honestly what fits.
What Can You See in 7-Days in Himachal? Shimla and Manali Route

This route runs Chandigarh to Shimla to Manali to Chandigarh. You spend two nights in Shimla and four nights in Manali.
It gives first-timers the two best-known towns without turning the holiday into a race. If you want to start the plan from Shimla, see our Shimla tour packages.
Day 1: Chandigarh to Shimla
The drive is short by Himachal standards. HPTDC lists 117 km and the Shimla district administration lists 119 km. The district gives about 3.5 hours by car in normal conditions, and traffic can add time.
If you reach in time, take an easy evening walk. Our favourite small ritual is to enjoy a warm cup of tea or coffee at Cafe 1873 on the Ridge, then take a relaxed evening walk as the town lights come on.
Overnight in Shimla.
Day 2: Shimla, Kufri and the Ridge
Spend the morning around the Ridge, Mall Road and Christ Church. These sit close together, so you can cover them on foot at a gentle pace.
Add Kufri as one nearby excursion, or swap it for Jakhu Temple if you prefer to stay close to town. Do not try to stack every Shimla sight into one day.
Overnight in Shimla.
Day 3: Shimla to Manali
This is a serious road day. HPTDC lists 260 km, while the Shimla district administration lists 280 km. The two figures reflect different routing or measurement, so plan for roughly 260 to 280 km.
The district gives a normal car time of about 7 hours 15 minutes and a bus time of about 9 hours 30 minutes. We suggest you allow roughly 7 to 10 hours and treat any earlier arrival as a bonus.
Start early, eat lunch on the way, and keep the evening empty. Overnight in Manali.
Day 4: Old Manali, Hadimba and Vashisht
Keep this day soft after yesterday's long drive. Visit Hadimba Temple in the morning, then wander through Old Manali and Vashisht.
Cafés, small lanes and local heritage fill the day nicely. You do not need a tight schedule here. Overnight in Manali.
Day 5: Solang Valley
Give Solang Valley its own day. It sits about 13 km from Manali, so you can go slowly and come back without rushing.
Snow and adventure activities depend on weather, local operators and current restrictions. For ideas on what you can try, read our guide to adventure activities in Manali.
Overnight in Manali.
Day 6: Sissu, or a Flexible Manali Day
Plan Sissu only if the Atal Tunnel and Lahaul road situation allows it on the day. You also need the correct e-Aagman vehicle documentation for your category.
If access looks uncertain, keep the day for Naggar, the Kullu Valley or a slow Manali day. A flexible day is not a wasted day. It is your buffer.
Overnight in Manali.
Day 7: Manali to Chandigarh
This is a departure transfer only. If you have a flight or train after reaching Chandigarh, give yourself a generous buffer for delays on the road.
Why We Do Not Add Dharamshala to This Week
Many people ask us to squeeze Dharamshala into this seven-day plan. Skip it. Manali to Dharamshala alone runs about 235 km and takes most of a day, so you would trade time in Shimla or Manali for another long drive.
You would see three towns in a hurry instead of two towns properly. In our experience, travellers enjoy the slower version much more.
How Should You Spend 10-Days in Himachal? The Grand Hill-Station Route

This route suits travellers who are comfortable with several major transfers. It is not a relaxed single-base holiday, and it does not include Spiti.
You start at Chandigarh and finish at Pathankot. The four towns feel very different, which is the whole point of this plan.
Day 1: Chandigarh to Shimla
Drive the 117 to 119 km to Shimla, check in and do gentle local sightseeing if time allows. A short walk on the Ridge is enough for the first evening.
Overnight in Shimla.
Day 2: Shimla and Kufri
Cover Shimla's heritage side around the Ridge, Mall Road and Christ Church. Add one nearby excursion such as Kufri.
Overnight in Shimla.
Day 3: Shimla to Manali
Keep most of the day for the roughly 260 to 280 km transfer. Allow 7 to 10 hours as your planning window.
Overnight in Manali.
Day 4: Discover Manali
Spend the day around Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, Vashisht and the local market. Keep the pace easy.
Overnight in Manali.
Day 5: Solang or Conditional Sissu Excursion
Choose one main excursion based on that day's conditions. Pick Solang Valley if you want snow slopes and activities close to town. Pick Sissu if the Atal Tunnel side is open and your vehicle paperwork is in order.
Skip the idea of doing Solang, Sissu, Rohtang and a long list of adventure activities in one day. Permits, quotas, traffic and weather make that combination unreliable, and you end up spending the day in queues.
Overnight in Manali.
Day 6: Manali to Dharamshala
HPTDC lists this route at about 235 km. A published local route guide estimates roughly 7 to 8 hours in normal conditions, with variation.
Treat this as a transfer day. Overnight in Dharamshala.
Day 7: Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj
This is your Tibetan culture day. Visit the monasteries, browse the McLeod Ganj market and spend time at the Tibetan cultural sites at a gentle pace.
You will not fit every attraction in, and that is fine. For help choosing, read our list of the best places to visit in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.
Overnight in Dharamshala.
Day 8: Dharamshala to Dalhousie
Our published local guide estimates about 120 km and 4 to 5 hours. HPTDC lists 143 km for its road reference.
The exact distance and travel time between Dharamshala and Dalhousie depend on the route, traffic and road conditions. Allow around 4 to 5 hours for the journey, with extra time for breaks or unexpected delays.
You should reach Dalhousie with time for a short evening walk. Overnight in Dalhousie.
Day 9: Dalhousie and Khajjiar
Khajjiar sits about 22 km from Dalhousie, according to HPTDC. Visit the meadow in the morning, then explore Dalhousie gently in the afternoon.
Weather and road access decide how much you can do, so keep the day loose. Overnight in Dalhousie.
Day 10: Dalhousie to Pathankot
HPTDC lists Dalhousie to Pathankot at about 80 km. Your trip ends with a drop-off at Pathankot, not Chandigarh or Delhi.
Book your onward train or road journey from Pathankot separately, and leave enough time for the transfer.
Could You Choose Spiti Instead?
Yes, you can use ten days for a dedicated Spiti trip. But Spiti replaces the classic circuit. It does not add on to it.
The Lahaul and Spiti district guidance, updated on 3 October 2026, gives Shimla to Kaza as about 412 km and around 20 hours of road journey, excluding an overnight halt. The Keylong to Kaza road via Kunzum runs about 185 km and depends heavily on the season.
Winter closure on that side generally runs from October or November to June or July, depending on snow. So do not plan on Chandratal in October or winter. Our Chandratal opening guide for 2026 explains how the season works.
A ten-day Spiti plan needs its own route, an acclimatisation plan, permits where relevant and weather backups. If that sounds like your kind of trip, start with our Spiti Valley tour packages.
Do These Itineraries Include Travel Days from Delhi?

No. Every plan in this article starts at Chandigarh. Your travel from Delhi or any other city sits outside the day count.
What Does Five Days and Four Nights Actually Mean?
In these plans, Day 1 begins with your Chandigarh pickup. The last day ends with your Chandigarh drop-off, or Pathankot on the ten-day route.
Some packages count days differently. A Delhi pickup, an overnight Volvo departure or an airport start elsewhere can change what "Day 1" means. Always ask where Day 1 begins before you compare two packages.
What Changes If You Start and Finish in Delhi?
A full Delhi-to-Delhi trip may need extra travel days or nights. The number depends on whether you drive, fly or take an overnight bus, so there is no single fixed answer.
Remember that the ten-day route ends at Pathankot. If you want to finish at Chandigarh instead, we need to adjust the plan separately.
How Much Time Will You Spend on Himachal Roads?

Most of your planning stress comes from a few long transfer days. Knowing them in advance helps you set realistic evenings.
The Main Transfer Routes
Chandigarh to Shimla runs 117 to 119 km, with about 3.5 hours by car in normal conditions. This is the easiest transfer in any of these plans.
Chandigarh to Manali runs roughly 300 to 320 km depending on routing. Our guide estimates 8 to 10 hours on the road, or 9 to 11 hours with stops. This is the longest day on the five-day plan.
Shimla to Manali runs roughly 260 to 280 km, with the district's normal car reference at about 7 hours 15 minutes. We plan 7 to 10 hours. This is the longest day on the seven-day plan.
Manali to Dharamshala runs about 235 km, with an estimate of 7 to 8 hours. Along with Shimla to Manali, this is one of the two heavy days on the ten-day route.
Dharamshala to Dalhousie falls between 120 and 143 km depending on the source and route, at about 4 to 5 hours. Dalhousie to Pathankot runs about 80 km.
Why Distances Can Be Misleading
Hill roads bend constantly, so your average speed stays low. Add traffic in town, meal breaks, photo stops, rain or snow, and the hours stretch.
Your hotel location matters too. A stay far up Old Manali or away from Shimla's centre adds time at both ends of the day.
Treat every time in this article as a typical estimate, not a guaranteed arrival. Our team recommends planning nothing important for the evening of a long transfer.
Which Himachal Route Is Best in Summer, Monsoon or Winter?

The right route also depends on the month. Here is how we think about each season.
March to June
Many travellers pick these months for mainstream hill-station trips. Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie all suit regular sightseeing.
Two warnings. Snow can still restrict high roads, especially early in the season. And popular towns get crowded, so book stays early and expect slower traffic.
July to September
This is the monsoon. Rain brings landslide risk, and roads can close for hours or longer.
As one example, reports said heavy rain left 66 roads blocked across Himachal on 28 September 2026. That describes that date only, not current road status. Keep buffer time and flexible plans in these months.
October to November
Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie often still work well. High-altitude access, though, becomes less predictable as snow arrives.
Do not build a plan around Rohtang, Kunzum or Chandratal in this window. Treat any high-pass outing as a bonus, not the core of the trip.
December to February
Choose town-based plans that stay on accessible roads. Enjoy local snow experiences only where authorities permit them.
We never promise Rohtang, Kunzum or Chandratal in winter. Keep the itinerary flexible and check advisories daily.
Do You Need Permits or Pay Entry Taxes in Himachal in 2026?
Yes, for some routes. Three different things confuse most travellers, so we separate them clearly here.
Rohtang Pass Tourism Permit
Rohtang Pass sits about 51 km from Manali. The official Kullu permit portal currently lists a fee of ₹500 per car or jeep plus a ₹50 congestion charge where applicable.
These are vehicle charges for this specific trip, not per-person entry tickets. The portal also lists daily quotas of 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles, and you apply for the next two days. Road opening still depends on conditions.
Safety and scam warning: apply only through the official portal at https://rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in/Home/InformatoryScreen. If anyone offers you a "guaranteed" Rohtang permit for a lot more than the listed ₹500 plus ₹50, walk away and check the portal yourself.
e-Aagman for Atal Tunnel and Lahaul-Spiti
The official e-Aagman site says vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti must apply for an e-pass. It separates an e-permit for the stated Atal Tunnel, Koksar and Chandratal circuit from e-tickets for other places.
Check which category applies to your route on https://eaagman.hp.gov.in/.
We do not list a fixed e-Aagman fee here because registration requirements and applicable charges may vary depending on your vehicle category, travel route and current local regulations.
Before visiting Sissu, check the official e-Aagman portal for the correct permit or ticket category and any applicable fees.
A Rohtang tourism permit and an e-Aagman vehicle pass do not substitute for each other. Do not assume Sissu needs no vehicle permission.
Manali Green Tax
The Kullu Manali-entry portal currently lists ₹200 as the green tax for a light motor vehicle not registered in Himachal Pradesh. The listed validity runs seven days, and the tax applies per vehicle. Other vehicle types pay different amounts.
Here is a small money-saving tip: Because the tax applies per vehicle with seven-day validity, keep your receipt handy so you do not end up paying again within that period on a short trip. Check the official page at https://rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in/ManaliEntry/InformatoryScreen.
Recheck every permit, tax, eligibility rule and road restriction just before your travel dates. These terms can change.
How Much Does a 5, 7 or 10-Day Himachal Trip Cost?

We will not give you a made-up total for these three routes. The cost depends too much on your group, season and hotel choice.
What Should Be Included in Your Budget?
Start with accommodation and the number of travellers sharing rooms. Then add cab or bus transfers, meals and local sightseeing.
Add activities, permitted excursions such as Rohtang or Sissu, vehicle fees like the green tax, and your return travel.
HRTC fares, taxi charges, hotel rates and activity prices can vary depending on your travel dates, route, season and availability. Check the latest fares and request updated quotes from transport providers, hotels and authorised activity operators before finalising your budget.
What Do Published Package Prices Tell You?
On 13 October 2026, our Manali package listing showed a few examples. A five-day, four-night Manali Volvo package started from ₹9,999 per person.
A five-day, four-night premium Manali private-cab package started from ₹14,999 per person. A seven-day, six-night premium Shimla and Manali private-cab package started from ₹18,999 per person.
A ten-day, nine-night Shimla, Manali and Spiti circuit started from ₹21,999 per person. You can see the listing at our Manali tour packages page.
Please read these carefully. These are starting prices for different tour packages, not fixed costs for the three itineraries discussed in this guide.
Final prices depend on your travel dates, room sharing arrangements, transport type, hotel category and package inclusions. Check the latest prices and request a detailed quotation from Travel Coffee before booking.
How Can Families or Groups Save Money?
Share one cab across the group. Since many charges apply per vehicle, a fuller car spreads the cost.
Change hotels less often. Every move costs you a half-day and sometimes an extra transfer.
Travel on weekdays if your dates allow, and use public transport where it makes practical sense. HRTC bookings run through the official state portal.
Which Himachal Itinerary Is Right for You?
The right number of days depends on who travels with you. Here is what our team recommends.
For Couples and Honeymooners
Balance scenery with rest. A five-day Manali stay or the seven-day Shimla and Manali route gives you time together instead of time in the back seat.
Skip the ten-day circuit unless you both genuinely enjoy road trips. Long transfers drain the romance quickly.
For Families and Senior Travellers
Pick hotels in convenient locations, ideally close to the main sights. Fewer check-ins make a big difference for parents and grandparents.
Build in breaks on every road day. Avoid heavy sightseeing in the evening after a major transfer, and keep one flexible day for rest.
For Road-Trip Lovers and Photographers
The ten-day route makes sense if the drive itself excites you. You move through four very different landscapes, from Shimla's ridges to the Kangra side and the Dalhousie meadows.
Just accept that the route has many transfers. You will spend several long days on the road.
If you want something quieter, a focused five-day Jibhi and Tirthan Valley holiday works as a calmer alternative. Do it on its own instead of trying to stack it with every major hill station.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days are ideal for a first Himachal trip?
Seven days work best for most first-timers, covering Shimla and Manali. Choose five days for one region, or ten for a wider circuit.
Is five days enough for both Shimla and Manali?
You can do it, but it feels rushed because of the long transfers. Our five-day plan focuses on Manali instead.
Should I spend seven days in Himachal or add more time?
Extra days give you flexibility and a wider choice of regions. They do not have to mean more places.
Can I cover Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala in one week?
You can try a fast version, but it adds another long transfer. You lose time in each town.
Is ten days enough to visit Spiti Valley?
A dedicated, season-appropriate ten-day Spiti trip can work. It replaces the four-town circuit and needs altitude and road planning.
How many days should I stay in Manali?
Our plans give you three or four nights there, with about two or three sightseeing days. Your arrival and departure times decide the exact total.
What is the best five-day Himachal route from Chandigarh?
Drive Chandigarh to Manali, explore locally, visit Solang, then try Sissu or a nearby fallback. Return to Chandigarh on Day 5.
Do the itineraries include travel from Delhi?
No. They start with a Chandigarh pickup and end at Chandigarh, or at Pathankot on the ten-day route.
Is the road to Sissu open throughout the year?
We cannot guarantee it. Snow, weather, traffic controls and police orders can change access at short notice.
Do I need a permit to visit Rohtang Pass or Sissu?
Rohtang needs a tourism permit, Lahaul-Spiti needs e-Aagman, and Manali has a separate green tax. Check each one before you travel.
Which Himachal itinerary is safest for a winter family trip?
Pick a flexible town-based plan on accessible roads with little high-altitude travel. Check official advisories every day.
