Himachal in February 2027: Snow, Quieter Holidays and Routes That Fit Your Time

February offers a different winter experience in Himachal Pradesh, with opportunities to enjoy snow covered landscapes, colder mountain weather and potentially quieter holidays compared with the peak Christmas and New Year season.
However, snowfall, road conditions and accessibility can vary across destinations, making it important to choose a route that matches your travel dates and available time.
This guide by Travel Coffee explains what to expect in Himachal in February 2027, including snowfall possibilities, suitable destinations, travel budgets, accessible routes and important winter planning considerations.
It will help you choose a practical February itinerary based on your available days, preferred destinations and snow expectations while allowing flexibility for changing weather and road conditions.
Quick Answer
Himachal in February 2027 suits a cold winter holiday with a fair chance of snow and quieter stays away from the busy markets.
Pick Manali and Solang Valley for snow, Shimla and Kufri for a short, easy break, and Jibhi or Dharamshala if calm matters more than snow.
Nobody can confirm February 2027 snowfall or road access yet, so check both in the week you travel.
Is February 2027 a Good Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh?

Yes, if you want a winter holiday. Maybe not, if your whole trip depends on fresh snow falling on one fixed day.
Himachal Tourism treats December to February as the winter season, with snowfall possible across several mountain destinations. Possible is the key word there.
Here is what most tourists get wrong
They squeeze Shimla, Manali and Rohtang into four days and expect snow on the Mall Road when they arrive.
February rarely works like that. You get cold, clear mornings, quieter hotels outside the main markets, and shorter days for sightseeing.
You also get road disruptions. One snowfall can make the hills look like a postcard and still shut the road you planned to drive the next morning.
Fresh snow also brings crowds back. In March 2026, reports described weekend tourist demand returning to Manali and nearby snow points after a quieter spell.
So plan your main snow day on a weekday and leave your hotel early. Popular snow points feel very different before the day trippers pour in.
If snow is your main reason for travelling, our Manali tour packages keep a flexible snow day built into the plan.
Will There Be Snow in Himachal in February 2027?

Nobody can tell you that today. Anyone promising you February 2027 snow right now is guessing.
What Do Historical Snowfall Patterns Tell Us?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) climate account for Shimla notes that snowfall once linked with December has, in recent years, often shifted towards January or early February.
That gives early February decent odds. It still does not count as a forecast.
February 2026 shows why. Himachal recorded 15.7 mm of precipitation against a normal of 101.8 mm, an 85% deficit across the state.
That figure covers the whole state and tells you nothing exact about snow depth at Solang or Kufri. It does tell you one dry month can upset an entire snow plan.
Where Are the Chances of Finding Snow Better?
Height decides most of it. Solang, Kufri and Narkanda sit higher than Shimla town and central Manali, and Himachal Tourism names all three as skiing locations.
Shimla town, central Manali and the lower valleys can stay brown even in a reasonable winter. Plan around the higher spots if snow matters to you.
Know the difference between fresh snow and old snow. Fresh snowfall covers roofs and trees and often blocks roads. Old snow sits on shaded slopes and higher ground for days afterwards.
Here is an insider tip: Before you book, look for photos posted in the last two or three days with a clear date, and check the official IMD forecast for your exact dates.
Old viral snowfall videos come back every winter. They tell you nothing about the week you plan to travel.
How Cold Is Himachal in February?

Cold enough that your packing matters as much as your itinerary.
For Shimla, IMD's 1971 to 2000 climate normals list a February mean daily maximum of 10.3°C and a mean daily minimum of 2.4°C. These are long term averages, not a 2027 forecast.
Higher places like Kufri, Narkanda and Solang can get much colder, with ice on shaded roads and paths. We won't hand you made up numbers for those spots.
Instead, check the forecast for the exact place, not just the nearest big town. The town centre can feel fine at noon while the road above it stays icy.
Evenings turn cold quickly once the sun drops behind the ridges. Plan outdoor sightseeing for late morning and early afternoon, and keep evenings for food and a warm room.
Which Places Are Best for Snow in February 2027?

Manali and Solang Valley
Solang Valley sits 13 km from Manali, according to Himachal Tourism. It works as the main organised winter sports area near town.
When snow and conditions allow, local operators run skiing and other snow activities there. Treat these as a bonus, because weather and access decide whether anything runs that day.
If Solang doesn't work out, Manali still gives you a good day. Walk to Hadimba Temple through the deodar forest, then spend the afternoon in the cafés of Old Manali.
Skip any taxi package that sells you a "Rohtang snow point" in February. The old Rohtang road normally stays shut through winter, and we explain that below.
Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda
Shimla works in February even without snow in town. Hotels, transport, food and medical help all stay close by, and that counts for a lot when the weather turns.
The Himalayan Nature Park at Kufri sits 16 km from Shimla, per Himachal Tourism. Kufri makes a natural half day trip when the road and weather allow.
Narkanda sits further along and higher. Heavy snowfall can close the road, so keep Narkanda as an optional day, never the anchor of your trip.
When the cold gets into your fingers, walk into the Indian Coffee House on the Mall Road in Shimla for filter coffee and a hot dosa.
If a short, easy trip suits you, our Shimla tour packages keep Kufri and Narkanda flexible around the weather.
Sethan, Lahaul and Sissu
Some travellers look higher, towards Sethan near Manali and the Atal Tunnel corridor into Lahaul, hoping for deeper snow.
Sethan access depends on the road and snow on the day. We would not promise any activity there for February 2027.
Sissu needs extra care. The Sissu gram panchayat suspended tourist activities from 20 January to 28 February 2026 to respect local religious traditions.
Nobody has confirmed whether the same rule returns in 2027. Keep Sissu out of your itinerary until local authorities announce the February 2027 arrangements.
Where Can You Enjoy a Quieter Himachal Holiday?

Jibhi and Tirthan Valley
Jibhi and the Tirthan Valley suit you if you want forest views, a village homestay, a slow breakfast and long evenings by the heater.
Snow in Jibhi village itself may or may not come. Go for the calm, and treat any snow as extra.
Jalori Pass above Jibhi reacts fast to winter weather. Never assume you can drive over it in February.
Our Jibhi and Tirthan Valley tour packages work best for people who want rest rather than a snow checklist.
Mashobra, Naggar and Quieter Places to Stay
Want Shimla without the Mall Road crowd? Mashobra gives you a quieter stay in the Shimla area. Near Manali, Naggar does the same with a village feel.
Neither place stays empty, and the trade off is real. A peaceful hotel stops feeling peaceful when snow blocks your only road out.
Before you book, confirm three things. The access road should stay usable after snow, the hotel should run proper heating, and you should find a cab and a hot meal nearby.
Dharamshala and McLeodganj
Dharamshala and McLeodganj give you monasteries, Tibetan culture, mountain views and long café afternoons.
You may see snow on the higher slopes, but don't expect heavy snow in the town centres.
Skip Triund as a casual February walk. Snow and ice can change that trail completely, so only consider it with local guidance and proper gear.
Our guide to the best places to visit in Dharamshala and McLeodganj helps you plan easy winter days there.
What Is the Best Himachal Route for 3 Days?

A Short Shimla Winter Holiday
On Day 1, reach Shimla and check in. If daylight allows, walk The Ridge and Mall Road and see the central heritage buildings before the evening cold.
On Day 2, head to Kufri if the weather and road allow. If not, stay with Shimla sightseeing or take a short, easy outing towards Mashobra.
On Day 3, enjoy a slow breakfast with a view and leave without rushing.
What we tell our travellers is simple. In three winter days, pick one base. Shimla plus Manali in three days puts you in a car for most of your holiday.
One snowfall on the highway can wreck that rushed plan. A single base lets the weather change your sightseeing, not your whole trip.
Coming from Delhi usually means more transit time than arriving through Chandigarh or Kalka. That can easily use up most of Day 1.
What Is the Best Himachal Route for 5 Days?

Five Days in Manali for a Snow Focused Holiday
On Day 1, arrive and rest. The journey is long, so a short walk and an early dinner beat any sightseeing plan.
On Day 2, visit Hadimba Temple, Old Manali and whatever else in town feels comfortable.
On Day 3, go to Solang Valley if road and activity conditions allow. A weekday gives you the calmer version.
On Day 4, explore Naggar or another local option. Add Lahaul only after you confirm access and any permissions for that exact date.
On Day 5, leave with spare time for winter transport delays.
This plan keeps Solang in the middle of the trip on purpose. If snow or police restrictions block it on Day 3, you still have Day 4 to try again.
Five Days in Jibhi and Tirthan for a Quieter Holiday
Stay in one or two places for the full five days. Fewer hotel changes means less packing, less driving and more time sitting in the sun with chai.
Spend your days on short village walks, riverside time in Tirthan, local food and slow evenings. Stick to areas you can reach easily rather than chasing distant high points.
This plan suits couples and anyone tired of city noise. It disappoints people who need guaranteed snow activities, so be honest with yourself before choosing it.
What Can You Cover in 7 Days Without Rushing?

A Slower Manali and Naggar Holiday
Split seven days between Manali and Naggar. You get Solang, the temples and cafés of Manali, then quieter village days in Naggar.
Keep one day completely free. If snow closes Solang or ice makes a road unsafe, you move that plan into the free day instead of losing it.
Leave high altitude extras out of the fixed plan. Add them only if roads and permissions allow on the day.
Shimla and Manali if You Want Both
You can combine Shimla and Manali in seven days if you give the transfer between them a full day of its own.
The trade off is clear. You see more places, but you lose a whole day to the road, and heavy snow can delay or split that transfer.
Start the trip from whichever end matches your arrival point and finish near your departure point. That saves you a long drive back.
Should You Choose One Region or Two?
Families, travellers with older parents and first time snow visitors usually do better with one region and fewer hotel changes.
Two bases suit travellers who want variety and accept a slower, more weather dependent schedule.
Your arrival city, departure city and number of days decide the right answer more than any list of famous places.
Which Roads and Permits Should You Check Before Travelling?

Is Rohtang Pass Open in February?
Plan as if it isn't. Himachal Tourism says heavy snow normally closes the old Rohtang Pass road in late November, with reopening around May.
Nobody has published the official February 2027 status yet.
The Kullu district administration runs the official Rohtang permit website at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. Those permits cover vehicles during the operating season. They never override a winter closure.
Safety warning: If anyone offers you a Rohtang summit trip or a "special permit" in February, walk away. Get permits only through official portals.
Can You Visit Sissu Through the Atal Tunnel?
Driving through the Atal Tunnel, stopping near it and doing tourist activities at Sissu are three different questions. Each needs its own check for your date.
In April 2026, the Lahaul and Spiti administration restricted tourist access, stopping, parking and commercial activity at specified avalanche prone spots around the tunnel's north portal.
Never stop in those areas for photos. Snow slopes that look calm can still slide.
The 2026 Sissu suspension ran from 20 January to 28 February 2026. The 2027 arrangements remain unconfirmed. Our Sissu travel information page helps once the season's rules come out.
For vehicles heading into Lahaul and Spiti, the state runs the e-Aagman portal at eaagman.hp.gov.in.
An approved registration does not guarantee the road stays open during snowfall. Police and district advisories still decide on the day.
One more insider tip: The district road status page at hplahaulspiti.nic.in showed a last update of 14 May 2024 when checked, so don't trust its labels. Follow current district administration and police advisories instead.
Can You Travel to Spiti or Kinnaur in February?
Not as a casual add on. The usual Manali to Kaza high pass route does not work as a dependable February tourist route.
Winter Spiti through Shimla and Kinnaur remains a specialised journey. Himachal Tourism notes that parts of Spiti can fall to around minus 20°C in deep winter, and services stay limited.
Take it only with verified road access, proper winter gear and a driver who knows the route. Foreign visitors may also need inner line permits on certain routes.
Read our Spiti Valley tour information before deciding whether a winter version suits you.
If you only want the lower part of that road, our Kinnaur tour information shows what the Kinnaur side involves.
How Can You Reach Himachal in February?

Most travellers come through Delhi, Chandigarh or Kalka. Himachal Tourism lists road and bus access through these regional hubs.
Himachal's interstate bus network connects the major hill towns with the plains.
For Shimla, the Kalka Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage railway, gives you a slower and more scenic arrival.
If you don't drive regularly on icy mountain roads, hire a local driver. People who drive these roads every winter know which bends stay frozen till noon.
Check final road conditions and transport details the day before you leave, and again that morning.
How Much Does a Himachal Trip Cost in February 2027?

What Does a Budget Winter Holiday Cost?
We can't quote February 2027 prices yet. A third party example from 2026 gives you a rough sense.
A published 2026 guide estimated ₹9,500 to ₹13,700 per person for an eight day budget Shimla and Manali trip from Delhi, and ₹18,300 to ₹28,200 per person for mid range travel.
Those figures assume two to four travellers sharing rooms and transport. They are not Travel Coffee quotes, and they don't scale neatly to three or five days.
Here is a money saving tip from those same assumptions. Travel as a group of three or four and share one cab. Transport is one of the biggest costs on a winter trip.
Which Costs Can Change in Winter?
Heating changes your hotel bill. Location matters too, since a hotel near the market and one on a quiet ridge can price very differently.
Private cabs cost more than shared transport but save you on icy days. Snow activities and weather driven route changes can push the total up.
What Can You Do Besides Watching Snow?
When conditions allow, Solang, Kufri and Narkanda offer skiing with local operators. Only go when the slopes are safe and running.
Snow isn't the whole trip, though. Walk the old town lanes, visit temples and monasteries, and spend long afternoons in cafés.
Try Himachali food wherever you can, especially warm, filling dishes that suit cold evenings.
Shimla has a long ice skating tradition. In February 2026, the government announced a ₹20.22 crore redevelopment of the Shimla ice skating rink, so check whether sessions run in February 2027.
Look up festival dates and official tourism events closer to your trip. Don't book around an event you saw in an old post.
What Should You Pack for a February Himachal Holiday?

Start with thermals, then a warm insulating layer, then a waterproof, wind resistant jacket on top. Layers beat one heavy coat.
Add gloves, a warm cap, thick socks and footwear with real grip. Smooth city shoes slip on icy paths.
Carry sunglasses and sunscreen, because sun on snow hits harder than you expect. Pack a power bank and any personal medicines you need.
Before you arrive, confirm hotel heating, hot water and safe vehicle access to the property. Ask in writing, not over a quick call.
What Should You Do if Heavy Snowfall Changes Your Route?
Snow makes the hills look lovely and blocks roads at the same time. On 29 January 2026, PTI reported 655 roads blocked across Himachal after snowfall, including NH-305 in Kullu district.
If you stay in Shimla and the roads to Kufri or Narkanda close, stick with the town. The Ridge, Mall Road and a long café lunch still make a good day.
In Manali, if Solang, the Atal Tunnel or Lahaul closes, do local sightseeing or enjoy a slow hotel day. Waiting one day often costs you less than forcing a bad road.
Leave room before your flight or train home. A spare half day protects you from missing a connection.
Safety warning: Never drive past police barriers, take a closed road, or walk into avalanche prone areas for photos. No picture justifies that risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is February 2027 a good time to visit Himachal Pradesh?
Yes, for a winter holiday with cold, clear days and quieter stays away from main markets. It suits you less if fresh snow on a fixed date is your only goal, because nobody can confirm February 2027 snowfall or road access yet.
Will there be snowfall in Himachal in February 2027?
Nobody can confirm it yet. IMD's Shimla records show recent snowfall often shifting towards January or early February, but February 2026 still ended with an 85% statewide precipitation deficit. Check the IMD forecast and recent dated photos in the week before travel.
Which is better for February snow, Shimla or Manali?
Manali usually gives better snow odds because Solang Valley sits 13 km away and higher than town. Shimla suits short trips and families wanting easy access, with Kufri and Narkanda as weather dependent snow outings. Neither town guarantees snow on your dates.
Where can I find snow near Shimla in February?
Try Kufri, 16 km from Shimla according to Himachal Tourism, and Narkanda further along. Both sit higher than Shimla town and appear among the state's skiing locations. Heavy snowfall can close either road, so check conditions on the morning you go.
Is Solang Valley accessible in February?
It depends on the day. Fresh snow, ice or police restrictions can stop vehicles short of the valley, and snow activities depend on weather and operators. Keep Solang on a flexible day in the middle of your trip, not your last day.
Is Rohtang Pass open in February 2027?
Don't expect it. Himachal Tourism says heavy snow normally closes the old Rohtang road from late November until around May. The official February 2027 status isn't out yet, and a tourism permit never overrides a winter road closure.
Can tourists visit Sissu through the Atal Tunnel in February?
Not without checking first. Sissu's gram panchayat suspended tourist activities from 20 January to 28 February 2026, and 2027 arrangements remain unconfirmed. Driving through the tunnel, stopping near it and doing activities at Sissu each follow separate rules.
Is Jibhi worth visiting in February without guaranteed snowfall?
Yes, if you want quiet. Jibhi works well for forest walks, homestays and slow evenings rather than guaranteed snow activities. Jalori Pass above it reacts quickly to winter weather, so never plan your trip around crossing it in February.
Can I visit Spiti Valley or Chandratal in February?
Chandratal, no. It sits on the seasonal high pass side and isn't a February sightseeing stop. Winter Spiti through Shimla and Kinnaur is a specialised trip, with parts of Spiti around minus 20°C, limited services and road access you must verify first.
How many days are enough for a Himachal winter trip?
Three days covers one base like Shimla comfortably. Five days suits a single snow focused base like Manali or a quiet Jibhi stay. Seven days lets you combine Shimla and Manali with a full transfer day and one free weather day.
Is Himachal safe for families, children and older travellers in February?
Yes, with the right plan. Choose one or two bases, a hotel with confirmed heating, a local driver for icy roads and short sightseeing days. Children and older travellers feel the cold most, so keep evenings indoors and medicines close.
