Himachal in October 2026: Autumn Routes, Trip Lengths and What to Check Before Booking

Most people planning Himachal in October 2026 make the same costly mistake. They squeeze five towns into five days and pay in advance for a high pass they may not reach on their date.
This guide by Travel Coffee is here to stop that. We cover which routes suit October, how many days each one really needs, and what you should confirm before you pay anyone.
Quick Answer
October can be an excellent month for autumn sightseeing in Shimla, Manali, Jibhi, Dharamshala and Kinnaur. After the monsoon, the views clear and the days feel comfortable.
For a focused holiday, 5 to 7 days is a useful planning range. It is a guide, not a fixed minimum.
Spiti, Chandratal and the high passes need extra buffer days and a live road check, because October is when the high country starts turning towards winter.
Before you pay, confirm road conditions, permits, room heating and refund terms for your exact dates.
Is October 2026 a Good Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh?

For most travellers, yes. The monsoon has moved out, the hills look washed clean, and you can walk around Shimla or Manali without sweating through your shirt.
In our experience, October suits travellers who want a calm, unhurried holiday more than an adventure checklist.
Early, Mid and Late October Feel Different
Early October usually feels like a soft extension of autumn. Days are pleasant, nights are cool, and the long Gandhi Jayanti weekend brings extra domestic travellers.
Mid October is when the high country starts to shift. Forecasts, roads and campsite operations can change within days, especially above the main hill towns.
Late October brings colder nights and more uncertainty on the high passes. The mainstream hill regions stay very usable, but plans for Spiti or Chandratal need real flexibility.
Who Gains Most from an October Trip
Couples and families who want comfortable sightseeing do well in October. Photographers enjoy the clearer air and the autumn colour in the orchards and valleys.
People who prefer slower holidays benefit most, because October rewards staying put rather than racing between towns.
The Honest Catch: October Is Not Rain Free
Do not assume dry skies. The IMD long term normals show Shimla gets 36.3 mm of rain across 2.2 rainy days in October, and Manali gets 52.3 mm across 3.4 rainy days.
That is not much, but a single wet day can still block a mountain road for hours.
If Chandratal is on your wish list, read our Chandratal opening and seasonal travel guide for 2026 before you lock any dates.
What Is the Weather Like in Himachal in October?

The numbers below come from the India Meteorological Department's climatological normals for 1971 to 2000. They describe long term averages, not a forecast for any October 2026 date.
Shimla and the Surrounding Hills
Shimla averages a maximum of 18.9°C and a minimum of 10.5°C in October. Afternoons feel right for long walks along the Ridge and Mall Road.
Evenings turn cool quickly, so carry a proper sweater or light jacket when you head out for dinner.
Here is an insider tip that most guides miss: These readings come from the Shimla weather station only. Higher spots around Shimla, such as Kufri or Narkanda, can feel noticeably colder.
Manali and the Kullu Valley
Manali averages a maximum of 22.5°C and a minimum of 5.5°C. That gap of 17 degrees catches people out every season.
You spend the afternoon in a T-shirt, then shiver after sunset. We tell our travellers to judge Manali by its night temperature, not its day temperature.
Ask your hotel directly whether rooms have heating, and whether it costs extra. Do not assume it.
Dharamshala and Kangra
Dharamshala is the mildest of the four stations, with an average maximum of 25°C and a minimum of 14.6°C.
McLeod Ganj sits higher than the observatory, so expect cooler evenings there than these figures suggest.
If you or your family dislike cold nights, the Kangra side is a sensible October choice.
Kinnaur and the Higher Valleys
Kalpa averages a maximum of 18°C and a minimum of 4.6°C, with just 25.2 mm of rain over 1.2 rainy days.
Kalpa's figures do not stand in for every Kinnaur village. Settlements higher up the side valleys can feel much colder.
We do not have official October averages for Chitkul, Kaza, Chandratal or the high passes, so we will not guess them here. Plan for cold, and check the latest IMD forecast before you leave.
Which Autumn Routes Are Best in Himachal in October?

The best October trips stay inside one region. Each route below suits a different kind of traveller.
Route 1: Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda
This is the classic starter route. You base yourself in Shimla, walk the Ridge and Mall Road, and take a short excursion to Kufri.
A day trip to Narkanda works only if your timing and the road allow it on the day. Treat it as a bonus, not a promise.
This route suits first timers, relaxed couples and families who want familiar hill station comforts close to the hotel.
The main booking question is simple: pick a hotel near the areas you want to walk. Our Shimla tour packages build in this kind of easy pacing.
Route 2: Manali, Naggar and Sissu
Use Manali as your base. Spend time in Old Manali, take a slower day at Naggar, and consider an excursion towards Solang or Sissu.
Sissu sits on the Lahaul side of the Atal Tunnel. Before travelling to Sissu, check the latest Atal Tunnel road conditions, vehicle entry requirements and local traffic restrictions. Access can change due to weather, road maintenance and safety regulations.
If Sissu is accessible, one of our favourite experiences is enjoying a warm cup of chai at a roadside dhaba while taking in the mountain views. Roadside cafés and dhabas may operate seasonally, so check their availability before your visit.
Do not confuse a Sissu trip with a Rohtang Pass trip. Rohtang needs its own regulated tourism permit, which we will explain later.
What we tell our travellers in late October: skip paying extra for a Rohtang day until you confirm access. A quiet Naggar afternoon often beats a long queue for an uncertain pass.
Browse our Manali tour packages for the main valley, or our Sissu tour packages if Lahaul is your main interest.
Route 3: Jibhi, Shoja and Tirthan Valley
This is the slow, nature focused route. You stay in a village, walk quiet paths, and listen to the river instead of traffic.
Pick one stay and settle in. This small region rewards people who stop moving rather than people who try to tick off every point.
Higher altitude excursions and travel across Jalori Pass depend on weather, road conditions and local restrictions.
Check the latest road status with local authorities before heading out, especially after rain or snowfall, as some village roads and trekking trails may become difficult or inaccessible.
Our Jibhi and Tirthan Valley tour packages keep the pace gentle for exactly this reason.
Route 4: Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj and Bir
This route mixes monasteries, Dhauladhar views, cafés and Tibetan culture at a relaxed pace.
Choose your overnight bases carefully. Changing hotels every night eats into the very time you came for.
Paragliding at Bir depends on weather conditions, visibility, wind speed and local safety regulations. Flights may be delayed or cancelled when conditions are unsuitable, so confirm availability with an authorised operator before booking.
For ideas on where to spend your days, see our list of the best places to visit in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.
Route 5: Kinnaur, Sangla and Kalpa
Kinnaur gives you big mountain scenery, apple orchards and a real autumn feel. Sangla and Kalpa make strong overnight bases.
Road access to Chitkul depends on weather, road conditions and any temporary local restrictions. Check the latest updates with local authorities or your tour operator before planning the excursion, and keep some flexibility in your itinerary in case of unexpected closures.
Travel slowly, pack warm clothes, and keep an eye on side valley conditions. Our Kinnaur tour packages start from this mindset.
Route 6: Spiti Valley via Shimla and Kinnaur
This route runs through Shimla, Narkanda, Kinnaur, Nako and Tabo to Kaza.
The Lahaul and Spiti district administration lists the Shimla to Kaza route via Kinnaur at about 412 km, with around 20 hours of journey time excluding an overnight halt. It calls this approach almost all weather, while warning that weather and road conditions still apply.
The same source says the Kunzum route can become inaccessible from around October or November. That makes the Kinnaur side the sensible planning backbone for late autumn.
This route still carries no guarantee. Adjust to altitude gradually, book flexible stays, and keep a return plan that does not depend on Kunzum.
Our Spiti Valley tour packages plan around these realities.

These itineraries are planning examples, not confirmed schedules or driving time promises. Your starting city changes everything.
3-Days: Shimla or Jibhi
Shimla option. Day 1, arrive and settle in. Day 2, explore Shimla and its nearby sights. Day 3, start your return.
Jibhi option. Day 1, reach Jibhi and settle into your stay. Day 2, enjoy local sightseeing and village walks. Day 3, leave.
Be honest about where you start. From some cities, traveling alone can make a three day plan feel rushed.
5-Days: Manali, Naggar and a Flexible Excursion
Day 1: Reach Manali and check in.
Day 2: Explore Manali town and nearby sights.
Day 3: Spend the day at Naggar and around the valley.
Day 4: Head towards Solang or Sissu only if access and conditions allow. Keep local Manali sightseeing as your fallback.
Day 5: Begin your return.
Your pickup and drop cities decide how much real time you get in Manali.
7-Days: Shimla, Narkanda and Kinnaur
Day 1: Reach Shimla.
Day 2: Explore Shimla and nearby sights.
Day 3: Continue towards Narkanda or Rampur.
Day 4: Travel towards Sangla.
Day 5: Explore Sangla, and visit Chitkul only if local conditions allow.
Day 6: Visit Kalpa and stay there.
Day 7: Begin the return leg or move to your next overnight stop.
If you must reach Delhi within the same trip, you may need to add days or restructure this plan.
9 to 10-Days: Kinnaur and Spiti Valley
This plan runs through Shimla, Narkanda, Sangla, Kalpa, Nako, Tabo and Kaza, with sensible overnight breaks for gradual altitude gain.
Give yourself time for sightseeing in Spiti and a full return journey, not just the drive in.
Access to Chandratal Lake, Kunzum Pass and the Manali side of Spiti depends on snowfall, road conditions and seasonal closures.
Check the latest road updates with local authorities before travelling, and plan your return through Kinnaur if these high altitude routes are closed or unsafe.
Can You Visit Spiti, Rohtang and Chandratal in October 2026?

These are three different places with three different sets of rules. Treat them separately.
Seasonal Patterns Are Not Live Road Status
A seasonal pattern tells you what usually happens. It does not tell you whether a road is open on your travel date.
The district road status page we found carries a May 2024 last update date. It cannot tell you anything about October 2026, so do not rely on it.
Kunzum and the Manali Side
Access to Kunzum Pass in late October depends on snowfall, road conditions and local authority restrictions. Check the latest road updates before planning your journey.
The Manali to Kaza road may face temporary closures or become inaccessible due to snowfall and icy conditions in late October. Confirm its accessibility with local authorities before travelling, and consider the Shimla and Kinnaur route as an alternative.
When the Manali side looks uncertain, assess the Shimla and Kinnaur approach instead.
Rohtang Permits and Vehicle Rules
Rohtang needs a separate tourism permit of ₹500 per vehicle, valid for one day. A valid tourism permit does not guarantee access to Rohtang Pass.
Road opening depends on daily weather, snow clearance and safety restrictions. Check the latest road status and permit availability before planning your visit.
Vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti also need e-Aagman approvals, which we cover in the checklist below.
Chandratal Campsites
Himachal Tourism describes a 14 km jeepable road from Batal towards Chandratal, with bedded tents available seasonally from June to October.
That is a general seasonal description. Campsite availability at Chandratal in mid or late October depends on snowfall, road accessibility, weather conditions and seasonal operating schedules.
Many camps close as winter approaches, so confirm accommodation availability directly with campsite operators before planning an overnight stay.
Our guide to Chandratal's 2026 season explains why we never treat Spiti access and Chandratal access as the same thing.
Does It Snow in Himachal in October?

Do not expect snowfall in Shimla or Manali town in October. The IMD normals show cool nights, not winter conditions.
Three Different Kinds of Snow
You might see snow on distant peaks, which is common in autumn views. You might find settled snow on the ground at high altitude. Or you might see active snowfall, which is a separate thing again.
Travellers often mix these up and feel cheated when "snow" turns out to be a distant white ridge.
What the October 2026 Forecasts Said
On 12 October 2026, a Hindustan Times report cited IMD forecasts of continued showers and possible high altitude snowfall between 12 and 17 October.
Fresh snowfall at high altitude locations during 12 to 17 October 2026 will depend on actual weather conditions, elevation and local temperature changes.
Check the latest IMD weather reports and local updates to understand where snowfall has occurred, rather than relying on forecasts alone.
That dated forecast says nothing about your future travel date. Check the latest IMD forecast before you leave.
Snow in the high mountains does not mean snow in Shimla or Manali town. Never pay extra for a package that promises a snowfall experience.
What Should You Check Before Booking an October Himachal Trip?

This is where most October trips succeed or fail. Work through each point for your specific route.
Road Conditions and Alternate Routes
Check only the roads your itinerary actually uses. For Kullu and Manali, that means the Mandi to Kullu stretch.
For Jibhi and Tirthan Valley, check the latest road conditions around Jalori Pass, especially if your itinerary includes Shoja or travel towards Narkanda. Weather changes, landslides and temporary road restrictions can affect accessibility.
For Kinnaur, check the Kinnaur highway. For Lahaul and Spiti, confirm road accessibility through the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang Pass, Kunzum Pass and Chandratal, depending on your planned route.
These high altitude roads can face sudden restrictions due to snowfall, icy conditions or maintenance work, so check official updates close to your departure date.
Ask your operator one direct question. If a critical pass closes, what is the alternative plan, and what does it cost?
Permits and Vehicle Restrictions
The e-Aagman portal says vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti need an E-Pass. It lists an E-Permit per vehicle for the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, Koksar and Chandratal circuit, and an E-Ticket per vehicle for other places.
Reconfirm the exact requirements on the portal before you travel, because they can change.
The Rohtang tourism permit works separately. The portal lists daily quotas of 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles, and you can apply for the next two days only.
Here is an insider tip: because the permit lasts one day and the quota is fixed, do not plan Rohtang as your only big day in Manali. Keep a backup plan ready.
Some foreign nationals need protected area permissions. Requirements differ, so check the district foreigner section for your case.
A Warning About Permit Overcharging
If anyone quotes you a high price for a "Rohtang permit package", compare it against the official portal. The portal lists ₹500 per vehicle, plus a congestion charge of ₹50 for cars, jeeps and MUVs or ₹100 for buses and heavy vehicles.
Drivers may reasonably charge for their time and fuel, but ask for the permit fee separately in writing.
Hotels, Heating and Refund Rules
Confirm four things with every hotel: room heating, exact location, meals included, and whether the property operates on your dates.
Remote high altitude stays behave differently from city hotels. A Spiti or Chandratal booking can lose its meaning if the road closes.
Get a refund and date change terms in writing before you pay. Never pay non refundable money for high altitude stays until roads and camps are confirmed.
Transport and Contingency Arrangements
HRTC allows advance booking up to 60 days before travel. Its online rules let you cancel until four hours before departure from the originating station, subject to booking rules.
Here is a money saving tip: book an HRTC seat early as a low cost fallback. If your private plan works out, you can still cancel within the allowed window.
HRTC itself says arrival and departure depend on roads, weather and natural calamities. A bus ticket does not protect you from a landslide.
Book a suitable vehicle with a driver who knows the route. Keep at least one buffer day before any flight, train or important onward commitment.
Here is a timing tip that changes the experience: start long mountain transfers early in the morning, so you finish the rough sections in daylight.
How Much Does a Himachal Trip Cost in October 2026?

We will not give you a made up total. Your price depends on your starting city, group size, dates, hotels, vehicle type, route and included services.
What Pushes the Price Up or Down
Accommodation usually forms the biggest share. Hotel category, location and heating all affect the rate.
Private transport depends on the vehicle type and the number of days it stays with you. A route that zigzags across regions costs more than one that stays in a single cluster.
Meals, sightseeing and permits add smaller amounts. The Rohtang tourism permit of ₹500 per vehicle, plus the congestion charge, is a published portal figure you should recheck before travel.
Keep a contingency budget for an extra night if a road closes. In October, that money often saves the trip.
How to Compare Quotes Fairly
Ask every operator for an itemised written quotation. Compare hotel names, meal plans, vehicle type, permit handling and cancellation terms side by side.
A cheaper quote that excludes heating or fees can easily cost you more on the ground.
Which October Dates Are Best for Himachal in 2026?
Early October suits travellers who want pleasant days and a lower chance of high altitude disruption. Gandhi Jayanti falls on Friday, 2 October 2026, creating a long weekend that brings crowds.
Late October suits travellers who want quieter hill towns and do not mind colder nights. It is the weaker window for high passes.
Dussehra and Kullu Dussehra
Dussehra falls on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Kullu traditionally celebrates Dussehra as a week-long festival linked to Vijayadashami.
Check the official Kullu Dussehra website for the 2026 programme and any temporary traffic restrictions.
Around Diwali
Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Festival periods can affect hotel availability and prices, so book earlier if your dates touch these holidays.
What Should You Pack for Himachal in October?

Pack for your coldest overnight stop, not your warmest afternoon.
Clothing for Your Route
For Shimla and Dharamshala, a sweater and a light jacket usually do the job. For Manali, add a warmer jacket for nights.
For Kinnaur and Spiti, carry thermals, a properly warm jacket, gloves and a cap.
You do not need specialised snow gear for a mainstream October trip.
Footwear, Rain Cover and Medicine
Wear shoes with good grip for monastery steps and village paths. Carry a light rain jacket for the occasional wet day.
Bring your regular medication, plus basic tablets for headache and stomach upsets.
Remote Travel Essentials
Carry cash, download offline maps, and keep a charged power bank. In remote valleys, networks and ATMs can be unreliable.
Which Himachal Route Should Families, Couples and First Time Travellers Choose?

Families
Choose a focused mainstream route like Shimla or Manali. Short travel days keep children and older family members comfortable.
Couples
Manali, Shimla and Jibhi all suit couples. Jibhi works best if you want quiet. Manali works best if you want cafés and walks with more options.
First Time Travellers
Start with one region and do it well. In our planning experience, first timers enjoy a focused trip far more than a rushed loop.
Spiti and High Altitude Trips
Spiti needs more preparation, more days and more flexibility. Consult a doctor if anyone in your group has heart or breathing concerns before planning a high altitude trip.
How Can You Avoid Common October Booking Mistakes?
Too Many Towns, Too Few Days
The most common mistake we see is combining distant places like Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala in five days. You end up seeing mostly the inside of a vehicle.
Non Refundable High Altitude Bookings
Do not pay non refundable money for Chandratal camps or Spiti stays before confirming road and campsite status.
Misreading Permits
A Rohtang permit is not proof the pass is open. An e-Aagman approval is not a guarantee either.
Forgetting About Heating
Cold nights in Manali or Kalpa feel very different in an unheated room. Ask before you book.
Trusting the Route Name
A package called "Spiti Circuit" does not mean the full loop will be accessible. Ask what happens if part of the route closes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is October a good time to visit Himachal Pradesh?
Yes, for most mainstream routes. Post monsoon skies are often clearer, and towns like Shimla and Manali feel comfortable for sightseeing. October is not rain free, though, and high altitude access becomes less certain as the month goes on, so keep some flexibility in your plan.
Which are the best places to visit in Himachal in October?
Shimla, Manali, Jibhi and Tirthan, Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, and Kinnaur all work well. Spiti is possible via the Kinnaur route, but it needs more days and live road checks. Choose one region rather than several, and match it to your trip length.
Is October too cold for a Himachal trip?
Not for most travellers. Shimla averages a 10.5°C minimum, while Manali drops to an average 5.5°C at night. Kalpa averages 4.6°C. Daytime feels pleasant, but nights need proper warm layers, especially in Manali, Kinnaur and higher valleys.
Can I see snowfall in Shimla or Manali in October?
You should not expect it. Snow in the high mountains does not mean snow in Shimla or Manali town. You may see snow on distant peaks, but do not pay extra for any package that promises snowfall.
How many days are enough for Himachal in October?
Three days can work for one focused region, five days for Manali, and seven days for a Shimla and Kinnaur trip. Kinnaur and Spiti together need nine to ten days or more. Your starting city affects every one of these ranges.
Can I cover Shimla and Manali in five days?
It is possible, but it usually feels rushed because the transfer between them takes a big part of a day. We suggest picking one as your main base for a five day trip, then adding the other on a longer holiday.
Is Spiti Valley accessible in October?
The Shimla and Kinnaur approach to Kaza is described by the district administration as almost all weather, though still subject to conditions. The Kunzum route can become inaccessible from around October or November. Check live status for your dates.
Is Rohtang Pass open in October 2026?
We cannot confirm daily access. The official portal lists a ₹500 per vehicle tourism permit valid for one day, with daily quotas. A permit does not confirm the pass is physically open, so check road status before you plan around it.
Can I stay at Chandratal Lake in October?
Himachal Tourism describes seasonal tented stays from June to October, but that does not confirm camps operate in mid or late October 2026. Do not book non refundable Chandratal stays without a live campsite and road check.
What permits do I need for an October Himachal road trip?
Vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti need e-Aagman approvals, including an E-Permit for the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, Koksar and Chandratal circuit. Rohtang needs a separate tourism permit. Some foreign nationals need protected area permissions. Confirm details on the official portals.
Is October good for a family trip or honeymoon?
Yes. Families do well on focused routes like Shimla or Manali with short travel days. Couples enjoy Manali, Shimla or Jibhi for a quieter time. Confirm room heating, and avoid long high altitude drives if anyone has health concerns.
What happens if my booked route closes due to snowfall?
That depends on your operator's plan and refund terms. Ask in advance for an alternative route, the cost of changes, and the refund rules in writing. Keeping a buffer day and flexible bookings protects you most.
