Things to Do in Gulmarg Without Gondola in 2026: 3 Honeymoon Plan

Kashmir10 minutes read
Things to Do in Gulmarg Without Gondola

You booked the Gondola for your honeymoon, pictured the two of you floating over snow, and then the counter says it is not running today.

Take a breath. This happens more often than any booking page tells you, and your day is not ruined.

Quick Answer

A Gondola ticket does not guarantee the cable car will run. Weather, maintenance and safety checks can shut it on short notice, even with a confirmed booking.

You can still have a lovely honeymoon day, but the right backup depends on the real situation. Is only the Gondola closed, is the weather genuinely unpleasant, or is the Gulmarg road itself affected?

Here is the one mistake to avoid

Do not swap a cancelled mountain ride for another unverified mountain excursion just to rescue the plan. That is how couples end up stuck or cold for nothing.

And remember, a closed Gondola and a closed Gulmarg road are two different problems. Sorting out things to do in Gulmarg without Gondola starts with knowing which one you actually have.

Why the Gondola May Close: Weather, Maintenance and Safety

Why the Gondola May Close: Weather, Maintenance and Safety

The Gondola is a machine working at altitude in hard conditions, so it gets rest days and check days built into the calendar.

The current Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation notice schedules preventive maintenance closure on the second and fourth Monday of every month. On those days the ride simply does not run.

On top of that, technical faults, inspections and safety calls can close it any other day. Nobody can predict every one of these in advance.

2026 shows why. Operations stopped after a technical malfunction on 25 May 2026, with more than 300 passengers stranded and evacuated, and resumed only in late June after repairs, inspections and testing.

There was also an annual inspection closure from 14 to 17 September 2026, and a separate maintenance and technical inspection closure on 12 October 2026.

None of this means the Gondola is unsafe or unreliable. It means a sensible couple keeps a backup ready instead of betting the whole day on one ride.

First Check Which Problem You Actually Have

Before you feel let down, find out what is really closed.

Ask your driver or hotel whether only Phase 2 is affected, whether the entire Gondola is down, whether Gulmarg itself is still reachable, and whether the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road is safe.

Do not assume Phase 1 will run just because Phase 2 is closed. They can behave differently on the same day, so treat them as separate questions.

For ticket mechanics and phase details, our gulmarg gondola guide covers the booking side so this page can stay focused on your honeymoon backup.

What most couples get wrong is treating a Gondola slip as the end of Gulmarg. It is not. It is a signal to switch plans, not to panic.

Plan A: Scenic Short Walks and Photographs, If the Day Is Safe

Plan A: Scenic Short Walks and Photographs, If the Day Is Safe

If the Gondola is closed but the air is calm and the sky is behaving, stay in Gulmarg and keep it slow.

The central Gulmarg meadow is wide, open and quietly beautiful, and it costs nothing to walk across together.

Wander toward the St Mary’s Church area near the Gulmarg Golf Course, a recognised heritage spot that photographs well in soft light. Drift past the Maharani Temple area and take in the views around the golf course and meadow.

Keep it to a gentle two to four hours. This is couple time, not a trekking mission.

Here is the honest part. Snow, ice, wind, poor visibility, or a word from local authorities or your driver always wins over any plan on this page. If they say stop, you stop.

Choose short out and back walks instead of committing to long snow routes you cannot see the end of. You can always turn back when your toes get cold.

Leave room for photographs of the two of you, a warm drink, and an unhurried meal where nobody is rushing you to the next stop.

A timing tip that changes everything here is to head out in the first clear window of the morning. Light is softer, the meadow is emptier, and weather near the peaks tends to turn sour as the day goes on.

One thing we tell our travellers plainly. Do not chase Khilanmarg, high snowfields or remote trails on a day the Gondola is already down, unless someone local has confirmed that access is genuinely open and safe that morning.

If you are weighing Gulmarg against its quieter cousin for snow days, our sonamarg vs gulmarg in winter comparison helps you understand what each place actually delivers.

And whether or not there is snow at base level depends entirely on recent weather and the season. We never promise it, and you should not plan your whole mood around it.

For a wider sense of what the region looks like in the cold months, our guide to places to visit in Kashmir in winter gives you realistic options beyond Gulmarg.

Plan B: A Warm Slow Stay and Nearby Experiences

Plan B: A Warm Slow Stay and Nearby Experiences

Some days the Gondola is closed and the weather outside is genuinely miserable. Wind, sleet, nothing to see. On those days, forcing sightseeing makes the honeymoon worse, not better.

This is the day to slow right down. A long breakfast or a slow lunch, a pot of kahwa to keep your hands warm, and real time together with no itinerary pulling at you.

Take photographs around your property when the light is nice, step outside only for short breaks when conditions feel comfortable, and otherwise let the day be soft and quiet.

We will not pretend a specific hotel has a fireplace, a spa or an indoor pool unless we have actually checked it for your booking. Ask us about your exact property and we will tell you the truth.

If you want a nearby lower change of scene, something like Tangmarg or Baba Reshi can work, but only after your local driver or our operations team confirms the road, the access and the weather that day. Never set off on hope alone.

Here is a small money point that saves couples real stress. You do not need to spend the whole day refreshing a status page or paying extra to a driver to keep checking if the Gondola might restart.

Once the local operations team tells you the ride is unlikely today, switch your head to Plan B and actually enjoy the rest of the day. The anxious half hourly checking rarely changes the answer.

In our experience, the couples who relax into a warm slow day remember it more fondly than the ones who spent six hours fighting the weather for a ride that was never going to run.

Plan C: A Revised Srinagar Schedule With a Local Driver

Plan C: A Revised Srinagar Schedule With a Local Driver

If going back toward Srinagar makes operational sense, and the Gulmarg road is confirmed usable, this is often the smartest Plan B of the three.

Gulmarg sits about 56 km from Srinagar, and ordinary driving runs around two hours. In winter, snowfall, ice and traffic management can make it a good deal slower, so we will not promise you a fixed arrival time.

Keep the Srinagar plan simple. Pair the Dal Lake or Boulevard area with one nearby stop such as Nishat Garden or Shalimar Garden, if they are open and suit the season, then an easy dinner in the city.

Dal Lake, Nishat Garden and Shalimar Garden are all recognised Srinagar attractions, and they give you a full, warm, workable day without gambling on another high mountain.

Why not just swap Gulmarg for Sonamarg or Pahalgam instead? Because those are other mountain destinations with their own roads, their own weather and their own access questions. Replacing one unknown with another unknown is not a plan, it is a coin toss.

Srinagar is lower, more sheltered and better connected. On a bad Gulmarg day, that reliability is exactly what a honeymoon needs.

How to Check Tickets and Current Status Officially

Go to the source, not the noise. The Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation official website and its notifications are where real status lives.

As things stand, the official operator says the Gondola is reopened for tourists, with scheduled preventive maintenance on the second and fourth Monday of each month.

The official site links straight to the JKCCC e-ticket portal for bookings, which open up to 120 days ahead.

Check official information twice. Once the evening before your planned ride, and again in the morning itself. An advance booking does not promise the ride runs that day.

Do not lean only on hotel staff, taxi drivers, Instagram reels or unofficial ticket sellers for whether it is operating. Reels are often from a different week, and roadside sellers have a reason to tell you yes. That gap is where couples lose money and time.

Check Phase 1 and Phase 2 separately, because their status can differ on the same morning.

We are not listing exact boarding times here because the official pages currently show different start times.

Check the latest operating hours on the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation website before your visit, and confirm the timings again on the morning of your ride.

What Package Providers Can and Cannot Refund or Change

What Package Providers Can and Cannot Refund or Change

This is where couples get confused, so let us be unusually clear.

Your trip is not one booking. There are several. There is the JKCCC Gondola ticket, your accommodation, your transport, and the overall tour package. They each have their own rules.

A Gondola closure does not automatically make your entire Kashmir honeymoon package refundable. Those are separate things.

On the ticket itself, there is good news for the closure case. During the May and June 2026 shutdown, Gondola management publicly confirmed that refunds were being initiated for affected bookings.

Current sources reproducing the ticket conditions say an operator causing closure can get you a full ticket refund, often quoted as taking 7 to 10 working days.

The live JKCCC notification page does not display that full policy right now, so confirm the exact processing time before you rely on it.

The same reproduced ticket conditions say voluntary cancellations work differently.

They may carry deductions of ₹400 for Phase 1 and ₹500 for Phase 2, may need to be made at least two days before your visit, and Tatkal tickets and no shows may have separate restrictions with no refund.

Treat every one of these as unconfirmed until you check a current JKCCC issued ticket.

On our side, we will not pretend. We cannot promise a cash refund, a free date change, or a hotel, transport or package wide refund unless Travel Coffee’s own written booking terms say so for your booking.

We can often rearrange an itinerary when operations and your existing bookings allow, but we will never guarantee a specific change we have not confirmed.

The honest takeaway is simple. Know which booking you are asking about before you ask about a refund.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Gulmarg Gondola open every day?

No. The Gondola closes for scheduled maintenance on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Extra closures can also happen due to weather, technical issues or safety checks. Check the official status before your visit.

What happens if the Gulmarg Gondola is cancelled?

You can switch to lower-area snow activities, enjoy a relaxed hotel day or revise your plan towards Srinagar. First check whether the closure affects only the Gondola or also the road.

Can we get a refund if the Gondola closes?

Refunds may be available for operator-caused closures, depending on the ticket terms. Hotel, transport and package bookings follow separate cancellation policies. Check the applicable rules before booking.

How do we check whether the Gulmarg Gondola is operating today?

Check the official Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation website and its notifications. Recheck the status the evening before and on the morning of your ride, including Phase 1 and Phase 2 separately.

Is Gulmarg worth visiting without the Gondola?

Yes. You can enjoy the meadow, visit St Mary's Church and explore the surroundings when conditions are safe. If the weather is poor, a relaxed hotel day or Srinagar visit may be a better choice.

What can honeymoon couples do in Gulmarg without the Gondola?

Couples can walk around the central meadow, visit St Mary's Church and Maharani Temple, take photographs and enjoy a relaxed meal. If the weather changes, spend time at your hotel or revise the day's plan.

Can we still see snow without riding the Gondola?

Yes, if there is enough snow around Gulmarg's lower areas. However, snow cover depends on recent weather and the season, so it cannot be guaranteed.

What happens if only Phase 2 is closed?

Check Phase 1 separately, as its operations may differ. Do not assume it will remain open just because Phase 2 is closed. Confirm the status before heading to the boarding point.

Should we return to Srinagar if the Gondola is closed?

It can be a sensible option if the Gulmarg road is open and safe. Srinagar offers other places to explore, including Dal Lake and its gardens. Check road conditions before leaving.

Can a tour operator change our Gulmarg day?

An operator may be able to rearrange your itinerary, depending on hotel bookings, transport and local conditions. Confirm the available alternatives before assuming a change is possible.

Does a Gondola closure mean the Gulmarg road is also closed?

No. Gondola operations and road access are separate. The cable car may close while the road remains open, or snowfall may affect road access independently. Check both conditions separately.

What should we avoid doing when the Gondola closes because of bad weather?

Avoid rushing towards another high-altitude destination without checking its road and weather conditions. Follow local safety instructions and use suitable vehicles or snow chains wherever required.
