Zero Point Sonamarg

Zero Point is the farthest point you can reach by road from Sonamarg, about 25 km along the Srinagar to Leh highway toward Zoji La pass. It sits at roughly 3,500 metres (about 11,500 feet), which is nearly 800 metres higher than Sonamarg town. The name comes from the fact that beyond this point, the road historically became impassable for civilian vehicles. For visitors, it means one thing: this is where you drive into a wall of white even in the middle of summer.

Here is the practical reality. You cannot reach Zero Point in your own taxi from Srinagar. Only Sonamarg union taxis are allowed on this route. You arrive in Sonamarg, hire a union vehicle from the bazaar, and drive 25 km up a winding, narrow mountain road toward Zoji La. The road is part of the Srinagar to Leh highway, which means it is shared with military convoys and heavy trucks. The drive takes about 45 minutes to an hour each way. The union taxi costs roughly Rs 4,000 to 5,000 for the vehicle (not per person), with a 2 to 3 hour halt included. Some drivers quote Rs 6,000 to 8,000, so negotiate or confirm the official rate before paying.

At Zero Point itself, there is not a lot to do beyond playing in the snow, taking photos, and riding snow bikes or sledges offered by local operators. And honestly, that is enough. The snow cover here is deep and persists well into summer, the mountains rise on three sides, and the scale of the landscape at this altitude is genuinely different from what you get at Thajiwas or in the Sonamarg meadow. For many visitors from the plains, this is the most snow they will see in their lives, and the altitude and the mountain walls make it feel dramatic in a way that lower snow points do not.

The honest framing. Zero Point is not a destination in the conventional sense. There is no monument, no trail, no structure. It is a point on a road where the snow starts and the road becomes difficult. The experience is: drive up, get out, play in snow, drink chai from a vendor, look at the mountains, and drive back. If that sounds thin, it is. But if you have never stood at 3,500 metres surrounded by snow in June, this will be one of the more memorable hours of your Kashmir trip.

Watch out for the snow activity operators at the top. They can be aggressive, and prices are not always transparent. Snow bike rides cost roughly Rs 500 to 700. Ask for receipts from the counter rather than paying individuals. Your driver may be in on the pricing, so bargain independently.

Altitude can affect visitors. At 3,500 metres, breathlessness, headache, and nausea are possible, especially if you came straight from Srinagar without acclimatisation. Move slowly. Do not overexert in the snow. If you feel unwell, get back in the car and descend.

Most visitors combine Zero Point with Thajiwas Glacier on the same day from Sonamarg. The practical order: do Zero Point first (union taxi, 2 to 3 hours total), then Thajiwas (pony or walk, 2 to 4 hours). Start early from Sonamarg, ideally before 9 AM. Trying to do both after a late arrival from Srinagar is rushed and usually disappointing.
