Thajiwas Glacier Sonamarg

Thajiwas Glacier is the reason most people stop in Sonamarg rather than driving straight through to Ladakh. It is a real glacier, sitting at about 2,800 to 3,000 metres, roughly 3 km from Sonamarg town. The walk from the meadow to the glacier viewpoint takes about 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on your pace and how often you stop. You can also take a pony. And the thing that makes it unusual is that you can touch actual glacial snow here even in July, without any mountaineering, without any permits, and without any special gear.

The name Thajiwas means snowy place in Kashmiri, which is accurate. The glacier feeds the Sindh river that runs through the Sonamarg valley. It has been retreating noticeably over the past decade, and the accessible snowfield is smaller now than it was 10 or 15 years ago. But it is still there, it is still real, and for many visitors from warmer parts of India, this is their first time seeing and touching glacier snow. That counts for something.

Here is the honest framing. If you are expecting a massive glacier face like you see in Ladakh or the higher Himalayas, manage that expectation. What you get at Thajiwas is a wide snowfield on a valley floor, surrounded by pine forest and mountain walls, with a stream of meltwater running through. It is not dramatic in the mountaineering sense. It is dramatic in the accessible, everyone can enjoy it, your kids can throw snowballs in June sense. And that is precisely why it is one of the most popular stops in Kashmir.

The trail starts near the Sonamarg taxi stand. The first 300 to 400 metres is the steepest part, then it levels out and follows a clear path through pine forest and alpine meadow. You pass Gujjar shepherd camps, small streams, and wildflowers (in June and July). Ponies are available from the start for roughly Rs 700 to 1,500 for a round trip, depending on season and bargaining. ATV rides are sometimes available too. There is no entry fee.

At the glacier viewpoint, a few tea stalls sell maggi and kahwa. Beyond the viewpoint, experienced walkers can continue closer to the ice, but the terrain gets rough and potentially risky. Most visitors stop at the viewpoint, which gives you a clear view of the snowfield and the mountains above it.

If you are staying in Sonamarg overnight (which we recommend over a day trip from Srinagar), do the glacier walk in the early morning. The light is better, the trail is quieter, and the air is cool. By midday the snow starts to get slushy and the trail gets busy with pony traffic.
