Gulmarg

Gulmarg is two completely different places depending on when you show up. In winter, it is India's best ski resort, buried in dry powder snow, with the gondola ferrying skiers up to Apharwat Peak for runs through terrain that draws Europeans who have skied the Alps and say Gulmarg's off piste is better value for the quality. In summer, the same slopes become a vast meadow of wildflowers, the golf course opens, families ride ponies across the grass, and the gondola takes tourists up to see snow that lingers on the peak even in July. Both versions are real. Neither version prepares you for the other.

The town sits in a natural bowl at 2,650 metres in the Pir Panjal range, about 51 km from Srinagar. The name means "Meadow of Flowers," given by Sultan Yusuf Shah in the 16th century. The British turned it into a hill station and built a golf course that is now one of the world's highest 18 hole courses. After independence, the Indian Army established its High Altitude Warfare School here. The Gulmarg Gondola, built by the French firm Pomagalski in phases from 1998, is the centrepiece of any visit. Phase 1 takes you from the town to Kongdoori at about 3,050 metres. Phase 2 continues to Apharwat Peak at roughly 4,000 metres, where the Pir Panjal range, the Kashmir Valley, and on a clear day, Nanga Parbat are all visible.

Here is the ground reality that most travel pages bury. The gondola is a time slot system with limited daily tickets, and in peak season (December to February, May to June), slots sell out days in advance. If you show up without a booking, you may not ride at all. Phase 2 closes frequently in bad weather, especially in winter, and the ticket is generally non refundable if conditions shut it down after you have booked. Day trip visitors cannot drive into the town itself; vehicles park at the entrance and you walk about 10 to 15 minutes to the gondola station, or hire a pony. Touts and pony operators at the gate can be aggressive. And the altitude at Apharwat Peak (above 4,000 metres) is high enough to cause headaches and breathlessness if you have come straight from the plains.

None of this is a reason to skip Gulmarg. It is a reason to plan properly. Book your gondola tickets online 15 to 20 days ahead in peak season. Check weather before buying Phase 2. Carry warm clothes even in summer for the peak. And if you can, spend a night. The day trip crowd clears out by 4 PM, and the meadow in the evening, with the mountains going pink and the pine forest going quiet, is a completely different experience from the midday rush.
