Yulla Kanda and Kalpa Itinerary 2026: A 6 Day Kinnaur Trip

Kinnaur18 minutes read
Yulla Kanda and Kalpa Itinerary

The most common mistake we see with a Yulla Kanda and Kalpa itinerary is rushing it. People try to fit a long Kinnaur drive, a high altitude trek and Kalpa sightseeing into three or four days.

It looks fine on paper. On the road, it leaves you with tired legs, an unsettled stomach and Kalpa reduced to a quick photo stop.

Quick Answer

Six days from Shimla gives you a comfortable Yulla Kanda and Kalpa itinerary.

You drive to Yulla Khas, rest a night, trek to the sacred lake and Krishna temple over two days, then come down and drive to Kalpa.

Five days works if you drop the full Kalpa sightseeing day. Road conditions and campsite availability can still change the plan.

For the trek stages alone in more detail, read our Yulla Kanda trek itinerary alongside this plan.

Why Combine the Yulla Kanda Trek With Kalpa?

Why Combine the Yulla Kanda Trek With Kalpa?

What makes Yulla Kanda special?

Yulla Kanda sits in the Rora Valley of Kinnaur district. The usual trek starts at Yulla Khas, which people also call Yulla Village.

At the top, a small Lord Krishna temple stands by a sacred lake. Most sources place the lake and temple at about 3,895 metres (12,778 feet).

People often describe it as the world's highest Krishna temple. We found no independent record certification, so treat that as a widely held belief, not a measured title.

Local tradition links the lake and temple to the Pandavas. That is religious belief, not proven building history, and it carries real weight for the villages below.

The walk changes as you climb. You start on village paths, move through forest and mountain pasture, and finish across open meadows with steep uphill pushes.

For many visitors, the lake matters less as a view and more as a place of faith. Walk up with that mindset and the whole trek feels different.

Why is Kalpa worth visiting after the trek?

Kalpa sits at about 2,759 metres, well below the lake. After two nights on the trail, that lower altitude helps your body settle and your sleep improve.

Kalpa also gives you proper rooms, hot meals and a slower village rhythm. You can sit with tea and watch the Kinner Kailash range when the clouds clear.

We see Kalpa as the recovery half of this trip, not a photo stop. Its temples, monastery and old lanes reward people who walk slowly.

For a wider look at the district, browse our Kinnaur tour packages that start from Shimla.

How Many Days Do You Need for Yulla Kanda and Kalpa?

How Many Days Do You Need for Yulla Kanda and Kalpa?

Is four days enough?

Four day products do exist. Some advertise a three night, four day Yulla Kanda and Kalpa trip.

The honest problem: four days squeeze a long mountain drive, a high altitude trek and sightseeing into very little time. One road delay and something gets cut.

If you are a beginner without trekking fitness, we do not recommend a four day version. You will spend most of it in a vehicle or catching your breath.

Can you combine both destinations in five days?

Yes. A five day plan from Shimla keeps every trek stage and drops the full sightseeing day in Kalpa.

You reach Kalpa on the evening of Day 4 and leave on Day 5. If the morning is clear and the road news is good, you can still walk the village before you go.

Why do we recommend six days?

The government trekking portal lists a minimum of three days for its Yulla Trek entry. That covers the trek only, not the long drives at either end.

Six days lets you sleep in the village before you climb, split the ascent into two stages, come down without racing and give Kalpa one full day.

In our experience planning Kinnaur trips from Shimla, that extra day prevents most of the complaints we hear: headaches, sore knees and a Kalpa visit people barely remember.

What Is the Best 6 Day Yulla Kanda and Kalpa Itinerary?

What Is the Best 6 Day Yulla Kanda and Kalpa Itinerary?

This is our recommended plan, the one we would sketch for a first time trekker. It is not a fixed departure package, and camp stays depend on availability and permission.

Day 1: Shimla to Yulla Khas

You leave Shimla and drive through Narkanda and Rampur, then continue to the Tapri side of Kinnaur. From there you head up to Yulla Khas.

This road day is long. If you reached Shimla on an overnight bus, do not plan any serious walking today.

Check into a village homestay, eat early and talk to your host or guide about the trail. Ask what the path looked like this week, not last season.

Our chai pick for this trip is simple: have your evening chai and a home cooked dinner at your Yulla Khas homestay. Ask the family what the weather has done lately. That chat tells you more than any app.

One insider tip: ask your guide exactly where your walk starts and where the next camp sits. Published distances vary because people start from different points.

Overnight: Yulla Khas village homestay.

Day 2: Yulla Khas to Lower Trekking Camp

Today you climb through forest and mountain pasture. The gradient builds slowly, then turns steep in stretches.

Start with a local guide who knows the current path. Carry enough water and snacks, because you should not count on buying anything on the trail.

Here is our second insider tip. Pack a small day bag with only your trek essentials and leave your main luggage at the homestay or in the vehicle.

Camp only where your guide confirms a locally approved site. We do not give a fixed campsite altitude, distance or walking time here.

Overnight: Approved lower trekking camp, subject to availability and permission.

Day 3: Yulla Kanda Lake and Krishna Temple

This is the big day. Leave camp at first light so you reach the upper trail before the afternoon weather has a chance to turn.

That early start changes the whole experience. The light on the meadows looks softer, the wind usually stays calmer and you get time at the temple without watching the clock.

The upper section feels exposed and steep, and the altitude slows every step. Agree on a turnaround time with your guide before you start, and keep to it even if the lake feels close.

At the temple, follow local customs and keep your voice low. Pilgrims treat this as a sacred place, not a picnic spot.

Return to the lower camp if the route, the permitted camp and your group's energy allow it.

Overnight: Approved trekking camp, subject to confirmation.

Day 4: Descend to Yulla Khas and Travel to Kalpa

Walk down to Yulla Khas or your confirmed pickup point. Descents punish knees, so go slowly and use trekking poles if you have them.

Fix your pickup time in person the evening before. Do not rely on your phone to sort it out on the mountain.

From the village, you drive towards Kalpa through the Reckong Peo area. The full distance and time depend on your road and its condition that day.

Keep the evening easy. Take a hot shower, eat a proper meal and watch the mountains from your Kalpa stay if the sky opens.

Overnight: Kalpa.

Day 5: Explore Kalpa, Roghi Village and Local Culture

Wake before sunrise. On a clear morning, first light on Kinner Kailash gives you the best reason to spend a full day here. Nobody can promise a clear sky, but your odds look better early.

After breakfast, visit the Narayan-Nagani temple and Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Gompa. Walk the old lanes and, in season, the orchards around the village.

In the afternoon, take an optional trip to Roghi Village. Check the road locally before you set out.

Skip the cliff edge selfie. If you find yourself near a drop on the Kalpa or Roghi roads, step back. No photo justifies that risk.

Overnight: Kalpa.

Day 6: Kalpa to Shimla

You drive back down through Kinnaur and the Sutlej valley to Shimla.

Check the latest NH-05 notices before you leave. Traffic arrangements, landslides and repair work can slow Kinnaur roads.

What we tell our travellers every time: do not book a train or flight out of Shimla or Chandigarh for the same evening. Give the road room to be slow.

If you prefer a fixed group departure focused only on the trek, look at our Yulla Kanda group trek package. It starts from ₹7,499 per person and covers the trek, not this six day Kalpa plan.

How Do You Reach Yulla Khas From Delhi, Chandigarh or Shimla?

How Do You Reach Yulla Khas From Delhi, Chandigarh or Shimla?

Reaching Shimla and continuing into Kinnaur

Shimla works as your natural gateway. Whether you start in Delhi or Chandigarh, reach Shimla first and begin the Kinnaur drive from there.

Our published route runs through Narkanda and Rampur to the Tapri side of Kinnaur. District Kinnaur puts Kalpa about 260 km from Shimla.

Our trek package also has a five day, four night Delhi option, while the Shimla option covers three days. Services differ by starting point, so ask what each one includes.

From Tapri to Yulla Khas village

You need to arrange the last connection from the Tapri area up to the trek starting village.

Check shared vehicles, local taxis and the exact roadhead before you travel. Do not assume you will find a ride if you arrive late in the day.

Private taxi versus HRTC and shared transport

A private taxi gives you control. You stop when you need to, leave when you are ready and reach the village with your bags.

HRTC buses and shared vehicles cost less, but connections stay uncertain and waits can run long. We do not print bus timings here because they change.

Our money saving tip: in a group of four or more, split one private taxi. The per person cost can come close to shared transport while removing the connection risk.

How Difficult Is the Yulla Kanda Trek?

How Difficult Is the Yulla Kanda Trek?

How long is the trek?

The Himachal Pradesh Forest Department's 2024 Ecotourism Master Plan describes a 12 km trek from Yulla Village to the Krishna temple. Read that as a one way village to temple figure, not a round trip.

Other operators publish different numbers, including 18 km total and 24 km round trip. Different starting points, route choices and camp locations explain most of the gap.

So do not lock onto one number. Ask your guide for the walking distance from your exact start point and camp.

What are the difficult sections?

The forest climb feels steady. The meadows feel easier but leave you open to wind and sun. The real effort comes on the steep sections near the upper route.

Altitude adds the rest. Most sources place the lake and temple at about 3,895 metres. The government's Yulla Trek listing gives 4,114 metres, but it does not say that figure marks the lake, so do not treat the two as the same point.

The government portal marks the trek as easy. Trekking providers and visitors describe steep, demanding stretches. Both can hold true: you need no technical climbing, but the gradient and altitude still test you.

Can beginners complete it?

Fit, prepared beginners can consider this trek with a good local guide. Prepared means regular walks or stair practice in the weeks before, not just enthusiasm.

No trek at this altitude deserves casual treatment. Weather, sleep and how fast you climb matter as much as fitness.

For a closer look at the climb, read our guide to Yulla Kanda trek difficulty.

How Do You Travel From Yulla Kanda to Kalpa?

How Do You Travel From Yulla Kanda to Kalpa?

Returning to Yulla Khas

No road reaches the lake. You must walk back down to Yulla Khas or your confirmed pickup point before any vehicle can help.

Settle the pickup place and time with your driver before you start the trek. A driver waiting at the wrong roadhead costs you half a day.

The road transfer via Kinnaur and Reckong Peo

From the village, you drive towards Kalpa through the Kinnaur road network and the Reckong Peo area.

Kalpa sits about 14 km from Reckong Peo, the district headquarters. The district calls it about a half hour drive, though the road decides the real time.

The exact distance, travel time and taxi fare from Yulla Khas to Kalpa can vary depending on the route, road conditions and transport availability. Travellers should confirm these details with their driver or local operator before planning the transfer.

What Are the Best Places to Visit in Kalpa?

What Are the Best Places to Visit in Kalpa?

Kinner Kailash viewpoints

Kalpa's main draw is its view towards the Kinner Kailash range. Sunrise and early evening give you the best chance of seeing the peaks, weather permitting.

Midday haze and clouds often hide them. Many stays and lanes face the range, so ask for a mountain view room when you book.

Narayan-Nagani temple and local monastery

District tourism lists the Narayan-Nagani temple among Kalpa's attractions. Notice the woodwork and how the building sits within the village.

The Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Gompa shows the Buddhist side of Kinnaur's heritage. Visit quietly, ask before taking photos inside and follow the caretakers' rules.

Roghi Village and Kalpa's traditional streets

Roghi Village makes a good optional outing from Kalpa. Confirm the road condition before you leave.

In Kalpa itself, walk the older lanes slowly. You pass traditional houses, small shrines and orchards that change with the season.

One full day here beats a rushed loop of viewpoints. You start noticing daily village life, not just the scenery.

For more ideas across the district, see our list of things to do in Kinnaur.

Can You Add Sangla and Chitkul to This Itinerary?

Can You Add Sangla and Chitkul to This Itinerary?

Extending the trip through the Baspa Valley

Yes, if you have extra days. District Kinnaur lists Sangla at about 2,621 metres and Chitkul at about 3,450 metres.

Both sit in the Baspa Valley, and both deserve their own nights. Plan separate time for them rather than treating them as quick stops.

When should you skip the extension?

Skip Sangla and Chitkul if you only have six days. Adding them to a multi day high altitude trek plus Kalpa turns your holiday into a long car ride.

Nako and Spiti need even more time, plus separate checks on routes, weather and permits. For that bigger circuit, look at our Spiti Valley tour packages and plan it as its own trip.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Yulla Kanda and Kalpa in 2026?

What Is the Best Time to Visit Yulla Kanda and Kalpa in 2026?

May and June

Trekking operators commonly recommend May to June as one main window. Early in the season, snow can linger and the upper trail may not suit every group.

The government portal shows its Yulla Trek listing with dates of 22 June to 24 June 2026. Those dates belong to that one listing, not to an official season opening or closing.

July and August

Monsoon rain raises landslide risk on Kinnaur roads and makes the trail slippery.

Kinnaur district published NH-05 traffic restriction notices for the Nathpa and Nigulsari stretches in August and September 2026.

Janmashtami holds special meaning at a Krishna temple, and you may meet more pilgrims around it. Nobody can promise clear weather or particular festivities, so carry buffer days.

September and October

September and October form the other common trekking window. Skies often clear after the monsoon, though nights at altitude turn cold.

As we write this in October 2026, the trek can still work, but nothing guarantees it. Late October departures need extra care and fresh local confirmation on both road and trail.

Our Kinnaur in October guide covers autumn roads and weather in more detail.

How Much Does a Yulla Kanda and Kalpa Trip Cost in 2026?

How Much Does a Yulla Kanda and Kalpa Trip Cost in 2026?

Trek only versus combined itinerary prices

Travel Coffee advertises its Yulla Kanda Trek and Camping Group Tour from ₹7,499 per person. That price covers the trek package, not the six day Kalpa plan in this article.

What should a customized quote include?

Ask any operator to spell out the starting city, vehicle, homestays and hotels, camping, guide, meals and taxes.

Also ask what happens if the road or weather forces a change. We have no fixed price for the six day combined plan, so we quote only after we know your dates, group and stay style.

Where can independent travellers save money?

Shared road transport, room sharing and simple homestays all cut costs. Guide charges, camp fees, taxi transfers, hotel rates and food vary with season and group size.

Every saving has a trade off. Shared transport adds waiting, homestays offer fewer comforts and doing it all yourself means more planning calls.

For a fuller breakdown, read our Yulla Kanda trek cost guide.

Where Should You Stay During the Trek and in Kalpa?

Where Should You Stay During the Trek and in Kalpa?

Yulla Khas village homestays

Village homestays keep things simple: a bed, home food and a host who can often help you find a local guide.

Confirm your room in advance. Do not turn up expecting a free bed.

Permitted camps along the trekking trail

Before you book a camp, ask where it sits, what food it serves, how it handles drinking water and washrooms, and whether it holds the right permission.

Do not plan to camp beside the sacred lake. Camp only where your guide and local rules allow.

Kalpa hotels and homestays

In Kalpa, pick your stay for rest first. Look for easy access to the village lanes and, if possible, a mountain view.

We do not list property names or rates here, because both change each season. Ask us for current options.

Are Permits or Guides Required for Yulla Kanda in 2026?

Are Permits or Guides Required for Yulla Kanda in 2026?

Indian travellers

Keep three things separate: border area permits, trek registration and local camping arrangements.

District Kinnaur's Protected Area Permit list covers specified places, mainly in Pooh block. Yulla Khas and Kalpa do not appear on that published list.

A warning: if someone asks you to pay for an Inner Line Permit for Yulla Khas or Kalpa alone, ask which notified area it covers.

The district's older reference fee for applicable areas reads ₹200 per person, with agency charges separate. It is not a Yulla Kanda entry fee.

We found no confirmed official Yulla Kanda entry fee or camping charge. Ask for a receipt for anything you pay.

Foreign nationals and protected areas

Rules depend on your nationality and full route. The protected area list matters most if your trip continues into Upper Kinnaur or Spiti.

Do not assume one permit covers all of Kinnaur, and do not assume a longer route needs none. Check your exact destinations before you travel.

Trek registration and camping permissions

The Himachal Pradesh government runs an online Trekking Management System where you share your trek plan with authorities in advance.

Himachal Tourism advises high altitude trekkers to inform local authorities and use registered guides or operators. Check forest permissions for camping as well.

What Should You Pack and How Can You Trek Safely?

What Should You Pack and How Can You Trek Safely?

Essential clothing and equipment

Wear trekking shoes with good grip that you have already used on long walks. Carry a waterproof jacket, warm night layers, a headlamp, water, snacks, a first aid kit and your personal medicines.

Keep your trek bag separate from what stays in the vehicle. Sort it in Yulla Khas the night before, not on the trail.

High altitude symptoms and emergency planning

Rest well before the climb, walk at a steady pace and drink water often. Watch for headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual breathlessness.

If symptoms worsen, stop climbing, get help and descend when appropriate. Never trek alone, and leave your route plan with someone at home.

Respecting the sacred lake

The lake and temple hold deep meaning for local communities. Follow the customs your guide explains and keep music off.

The state trekking portal asks trekkers not to litter or pollute water. Do not wash or rinse anything in the lake, carry all waste down and avoid any spot your guide calls off limits.

What If the Kinnaur Road or Trek Is Closed?

What If the Kinnaur Road or Trek Is Closed?

How to check NH-05 conditions

Kinnaur district published NH-05 restriction notices in August and September 2026. One reported September Nathpa traffic arrangement ran through 18 September 2026.

Do not treat those September timings as October rules. Check the district notifications page and ask local drivers right before you leave.

What is the backup plan?

If conditions turn unsafe, you may need to delay the climb, shorten the trek, change your overnight stop or trim Kalpa sightseeing.

We cannot promise an alternative road, a guaranteed room or trail access on a given day. What we can do is build enough slack into six days that one bad morning does not wreck the trip.

How Can Travel Coffee Plan Your Yulla Kanda and Kalpa Trip?

We work from Shimla and plan customised trips across Himachal. Kinnaur routes like this one need local judgment more than a fixed template.

Tell us your dates, starting city, group size, fitness level and the stays you like. We will suggest a realistic Yulla Kanda and Kalpa itinerary and tell you honestly if your dates look risky.
