Yulla Kanda Trek Itinerary: How Many Days Do You Need in 2026?

Kinnaur17 minutes read
Yulla Kanda Trek Itinerary

You need three days for the walk itself, but not necessarily three days away from home. That gap is where most Yulla Kanda trek itinerary plans go wrong, so let us sort it out right at the top.

Quick Answer

Plan 3 days if you start from Shimla and 5 days if you start from Delhi. The Himachal Pradesh government trekking portal lists a minimum of 3 days for its Yulla Trek entry, and our published Shimla departure runs 3 days and 2 nights.

Our published Yulla Kanda trek group tour package from Delhi runs 5 days and 4 nights, and two of those nights go on overnight buses.

If you want a gentler pace, we suggest about four days from Shimla. That is our editorial planning suggestion, not a fixed package on our site.

Count your road days separately from your hiking days. They are two different numbers.

How Many Days Do You Actually Need for Yulla Kanda?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (6).jpg

Here is what most people get wrong. They read "3 days" on a listing and apply for three days of leave, then realise the count started at a Shimla pickup, not at their front door.

People count Yulla Kanda duration in three different ways. There are walking days on the trail, nights you spend in the Yulla Khas area, and total calendar days away from home.

A three day Shimla package is the compact option. You reach the village, climb, visit the lake and come back within that window, so the days feel full.

A four day custom Shimla itinerary spreads the same effort across one more day. You get a full night of rest after the long drive before you start climbing.

A five day Delhi package looks longer, but two of those nights go on overnight buses. Five calendar days does not mean five days of hiking.

So how do you choose? If you live in Shimla or Chandigarh, are reasonably fit and handle long drives well, the three day format can work.

If you are coming from the plains, rarely trek, or feel drained after eight hours in a vehicle, add the extra day. Your legs and lungs will thank you on the steep upper section.

What we tell our travellers

Pick your plan by your slowest day, not your best one. No schedule, short or long, guarantees you will reach the lake. Weather, the trail and your body make that call.

What Is the Best Three Day Yulla Kanda Trekking Itinerary?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (9).jpg

This is a walking plan that starts and ends in Yulla Khas, the trailhead village in Kinnaur. Your transport to and from the village sits outside these three days.

Day 1: Yulla Khas to the Permitted Campsite

Start after breakfast at your homestay in Yulla Khas. Have your chai there and do not rush out of the door half fed.

Here is a small insider tip: Ask your Yulla Khas homestay host the evening before whether they can pack you lunch for the trail. Our package does not include lunch, and there is no reliable food stop on the climb.

The trail climbs through apple orchards and forest first. As you gain height, the trees thin out and you move toward open, higher meadows.

Aim to reach camp with plenty of daylight left. You want time to settle in, warm up, eat, and talk to your guide about the next day's trail and weather.

Confirm the exact campsite and its permission status with a local guide or the relevant authority before you go. Rules on where you can pitch tents vary between sources, and we never send travellers to an unconfirmed spot.

Day 2: Campsite to Yulla Kanda Lake and Krishna Temple

Start the upper walk early. This is the timing tip that changes the whole day: an early start gives you a daylight buffer on the steeper final stretch and on the way back.

The final approach to the lake gets noticeably steeper. Walk slowly, breathe steadily, and stop when you need to.

At the top, you reach Yulla Kanda Lake and the Krishna temple beside it. Give yourself time for a calm, respectful visit. We do not quote temple timings here because we cannot confirm them.

Head back toward camp while you still have good daylight. If you feel altitude symptoms, if the weather turns, or if your guide calls a turnaround, that decision beats the itinerary every single time.

Day 3: Descend to Yulla Khas

Walk down from the campsite to Yulla Khas. Descents feel easier on the lungs but harder on the knees, so trekking poles help here.

In the village, you collect your bags, meet your transport and leave room for delays. We do not promise a fixed descent time, because pace varies so much from person to person.

Remember the bigger picture. Getting to Yulla Khas before Day 1 and getting home after Day 3 can add extra calendar days, depending on where you live.

What Does a More Relaxed Four Day Shimla to Yulla Kanda Trip Look Like?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (8).jpg

This is a suggested Travel Coffee custom itinerary. It is not a package currently on our site, and availability depends on your dates.

Day 1: Shimla to Yulla Khas

You drive from Shimla via Narkanda and Rampur, then continue into Kinnaur toward Yulla Khas. Our published plan allows 8 to 10 hours for this drive, and that is a planned duration, not a guarantee.

Start early from Shimla so you reach the village before dark. Mountain roads feel very different after sunset.

Sleep properly in the village that night. Climbing right after a long drive leaves you tired before you even reach the steep part.

Day 2: Yulla Khas to the Campsite

Walk up to a permitted campsite at an easy pace through forest and meadow. Treat the campsite as the full goal for the day.

Do not push on to the lake just because you feel fresh at noon. Check the conditions with your guide and keep the plan intact.

Check with your local guide or trekking operator before departure to confirm the designated camping area, available facilities and any restrictions.

Camping arrangements may vary depending on local regulations, weather conditions and campsite availability, so make sure your overnight stay is permitted and arranged in advance.

Day 3: Visit Yulla Kanda Lake and Return Toward Camp

Make a daylight visit to the lake and the Krishna temple, then walk back down toward the permitted campsite.

This separate lake day is the main reason we like the four day format. You do not have to combine the whole village ascent and the temple visit into one big walking day.

A higher camp night is not automatically safe, though. Watch for headache, nausea or unusual tiredness, and tell your guide early. Acclimatisation matters more than the plan on paper.

Day 4: Return to Yulla Khas and Shimla

Descend to the village and start the drive back to Shimla. Keep this day loose.

We strongly suggest you avoid booking a same evening flight or tight train connection. Mountain roads can hold you up for hours with little warning.

If you want to add a day or two around Shimla before or after the trek, our Shimla tour packages can help you plan a calmer start or finish.

How Does a Five Day Delhi to Delhi Yulla Kanda Package Work?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (10).jpg

This is our actual published itinerary, so here is exactly how it runs.

On Day 1, you board the overnight bus from Delhi to Shimla.

On Day 2, you reach Shimla, travel by road to Yulla Khas and spend the night in a village homestay.

Day 3 is the main trekking day. You walk from Yulla Khas toward the campsite and, if conditions allow and the turnaround time works, continue to the lake and the Krishna temple. The group then returns to camp for the night.

On Day 4, you descend to Yulla Khas, drive back to Shimla and take the overnight bus to Delhi.

On Day 5, you arrive in Delhi.

Here is the honest part

This schedule is compact, and the standard package combines the main climb and the temple visit into one long walking day. You need real stamina for it.

We cannot promise every traveler to reach the lake. Weather, the trail and how your body reacts to altitude all decide that on the day.

The four nights break down as two on intercity buses, one in a Yulla Khas homestay and one in a tented camp. You can check the current dates and details on our Yulla Kanda trek group tour package page.

Can You Complete the Yulla Kanda Trek in One or Two Days?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (12).jpg

Experienced trekkers sometimes attempt a faster trail schedule. Please do not treat that as an easy beginner option.

The final approach gets steep, and Travel Coffee describes the lake at about 3,895 metres above sea level. Ascent and descent times vary a lot between people.

Separate two very different ideas here. A one day hike from Yulla Khas and back is one thing. Doing a full round trip from Shimla or Delhi in a single day is something else entirely.

Our advice is to skip the one day round trip from Shimla altogether. With an 8 to 10 hour drive each way before you even walk, you end up rushing the lake and descending tired, which is when people slip.

If you do try a short walking schedule, plan to finish in daylight, walk with someone who knows the route, and keep the freedom to turn around.

Where Does the Yulla Kanda Trek Start and How Do You Reach It?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (13).jpg

Reaching Tapri and Yulla Khas

Yulla Khas in Kinnaur works as the main village trailhead.

From Shimla, you travel along the Narkanda and Rampur corridor toward Tapri, then take onward transport up to the village. The government trekking listing also mentions access via Urni, and it names the Tapri bus stand.

By public transport, you would usually take a bus toward Kinnaur and then a local or shared connection to Yulla Khas. We do not print bus timings here because we cannot confirm a current schedule.

What About NH-05 Restrictions?

Kinnaur district published road regulation notices during 2026. One covered temporary regulation of traffic on NH-05 near Urni Dank between 7 and 31 August 2026. Another, dated 5 September 2026, extended traffic arrangements at the Nathpa block point.

Here is the insider tip most guides miss: An old notice does not guarantee that the road is clear on your travel date.

Road conditions and traffic restrictions can change due to weather, landslides or ongoing maintenance, so always rely on the latest official updates from Kinnaur district authorities before travelling.

Check the official Kinnaur district website and road updates a day or two before you travel, and again on the morning you leave.

If you want to see more of the valley while you are up there, our Kinnaur tour packages show how we combine stops in the district.

What Is the Yulla Kanda Trek Distance, Altitude and Difficulty?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (5).jpg

Travel Coffee describes the route from Yulla Khas to the lake as about 12 kilometres one way. The exact number depends on where you start and which path you take.

Online guides disagree on the round trip distance. Some quote 12 to 14 km, while others suggest 20 to 24 km. These differences may come from varying starting points, routes and measurement methods.

Treat the figures as estimates and confirm the actual trekking distance with your local guide before starting.

Altitude figures also differ. The government trekking portal displays 4,114 in its trek altitude field, although the exact location represented by this figure and its unit are not clearly specified.

Travel Coffee describes the lake and Krishna temple at approximately 3,895 metres. Use these as separate altitude references until the measurements can be clearly matched to specific points on the route.

These two numbers may refer to different points on the route or different measurements. Do not assume they describe the same spot.

The difficulty grade differs too. The government listing labels the trek easy, Travel Coffee calls its package moderate, and recent trekker accounts describe steep sections.

Why such a gap? Gradient, altitude, weather and your own fitness all change how a trail feels. A path that feels easy to a local who walks it every season can feel very hard to someone who came from Delhi two days ago.

What Is the Best Time for Yulla Kanda Trek in 2026?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (4).jpg

Travel Coffee's published trip details give roughly mid May to October as the usual operating period.

Snow can affect the upper trail during the shoulder months at both ends of that window. Summer rain can make paths slippery and mountain roads slower.

Late September and early October can feel great when the weather cooperates. If you are reading this in October 2026, you are in that window, but conditions change week to week.

Travel Coffee treats late October and November departures as conditional on the trail, road, camp and weather. We will not promise access in those months.

You may notice the government portal showing opening and closing dates of 22 and 24 June 2026 for one Yulla Trek listing. Those dates apply to that particular entry. They do not describe the whole area's annual season.

We also cannot tell you today's live road or snow status from a blog post. Ask us or check official updates close to your date.

Do You Need a Permit, Guide or Camping Permission for Yulla Kanda?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (3).jpg

Travel Coffee states that Indian travellers do not need a special inner line permit for our Yulla Kanda route.

Kinnaur district's official tourist guidelines separately list protected areas in Pooh block where foreign visitors may need permits. Those rules cover specific upper Kinnaur destinations, not every place in the district.

Foreign travellers should check with District Kinnaur authorities before travelling to confirm whether any protected area permits apply to their nationality and planned route. Requirements may vary depending on the specific destinations included in their itinerary.

One non government trekking website mentions forest check post registration, a ₹50 to ₹100 entry fee and a separate camping permit.

However, these charges and requirements are not clearly established in official guidance. Check with local forest or district authorities to confirm whether any registration, entry or camping fees apply before starting your trek.

Here is a safety warning

If someone on the route asks you for an entry or camping fee, ask for an official receipt and politely check before you pay. Do not hand cash to anyone just because they quote that ₹50 to ₹100 figure.

You can call the published Kinnaur district tourism contact on 01786-222253 to check current rules. Confirm that the line is active and answer before you rely on it.

Sources also disagree on whether you can camp on the upper meadows or near the lake. Use only locally authorised sites and confirm the current rules before you leave.

A local guide matters most for first time trekkers and solo travellers. A guide helps you find the right path, reads the weather, and makes the turnaround call when you are too tired to make it yourself.

Where Should You Stay, Eat and Refill Water?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (2).jpg

Our existing package includes one night in a Yulla Khas homestay and one night in an alpine tented camp.

It covers two breakfasts and two dinners. It does not cover lunches, snacks, tea or coffee, or bottled water.

So sort your lunch and drinking water before you start walking. Carry treated or filtered water, and do not assume a clear stream gives you safe drinking water.

Pack proper trekking shoes, warm layers and rain protection. Add trekking poles, a headlamp, a charged power bank, offline maps and enough cash.

Mobile coverage on the route stays patchy, and we cannot promise any particular network will work at any particular point. Tell your family your plan before you lose signal.

How Much Does the Yulla Kanda Trek Cost in 2026?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (22).jpg

These are the rates currently shown on our published package page.

Delhi to Delhi and Chandigarh to Chandigarh departures cost ₹7,499 per person on triple sharing and ₹8,999 per person on double sharing. Our site lists the Shimla to Shimla departure at ₹1,000 less per person.

Here is the money saving tip

If two friends become three, triple sharing saves each of you ₹1,500 compared with double sharing. If you can reach Shimla on your own, the Shimla departure saves another ₹1,000 each.

Your final price depends on sharing type, the confirmed itinerary, your date and our final quote. We cannot promise these rates stay available indefinitely.

For that money, you get shared transport between Shimla and Yulla Khas, the village homestay, the tented camp and the meals listed above. Delhi travellers also get the return overnight transport.

The package does not include lunches, snacks, insurance, personal porter arrangements, or extra costs from roadblocks and weather changes. Keep a small buffer for those.

We will not quote a fixed DIY cost. Other operators show conflicting figures with very different inclusions, so any single number would mislead you.

>>Want to save on your Yulla Kanda trek? Message Travel Coffee on WhatsApp to compare double and triple sharing prices and find the right option for your group.

Is Yulla Kanda Safe for Beginners and Solo Trekkers?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (32).jpg

Fit first time trekkers can do this trek with proper preparation and local support. Just do not expect a casual walk.

You deal with steep gradients, altitude, parts of the route where you need to find your way, and mountain weather that can change fast.

CDC high altitude guidance says that once you sleep above 3,000 metres, you should generally gain no more than 500 metres of sleeping altitude per night. It also suggests an extra acclimatisation night for every 1,000 metres of sleeping altitude gained.

Campsite elevations can vary depending on where the overnight stay is arranged, so an advertised itinerary should not automatically be assumed to meet these acclimatisation guidelines.

Ask your trekking operator or local guide to confirm the sleeping altitude at each campsite and whether the itinerary allows enough time to adjust to the higher elevation.

If you feel symptoms, stop going higher. If they get worse or turn severe, descend and get medical help. Talk to your doctor before the trip about any medication.

A traveller posted an account on 7 October 2026 describing steep sections and a difficult descent after dark. That is one person's experience, not an official trail report, but it shows exactly why daylight planning matters.

Carry a headlamp, set a conservative turnaround time, take a guide when it makes sense, and keep talking to your group throughout the day.

Why Visit Yulla Kanda Lake and the Krishna Temple?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (30).jpg

Yulla Kanda brings together high mountain scenery, a sacred alpine lake and a Krishna temple at the water's edge.

Locals believe it is the highest Krishna temple in the world. We share that as local belief, not as a certified world record.

The lake holds a special place in regional devotion, and it draws pilgrims around Janmashtami.

If you plan to visit during the festival, check the date and local celebrations with villagers or temple caretakers in Yulla Khas, as prayer schedules and visitor arrangements may vary each year.

Please treat the place with care. Carry your rubbish back down, stay out of restricted areas, keep the lake clean and do not disturb people who come to pray.

If you have more time after Yulla Kanda, you can plan a separate trip further into the high mountains. Our Himachal and Spiti Valley packages work as a stand alone extension, not as a quick stop on this trek.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are needed for Yulla Kanda?

The government portal lists a minimum of 3 days. Our Shimla departure runs 3 days and 2 nights, and our Delhi departure runs 5 days and 4 nights.

Can I trek Yulla Kanda in two days?

Experienced trekkers with good fitness sometimes attempt two walking days. Less experienced trekkers usually do better with a slower plan and more rest.

Is a one-day Yulla Kanda trek possible?

A fast one day hike from Yulla Khas and back may be possible for strong trekkers, with no guarantee. A full trip from Shimla or Delhi in one day is not realistic.

How long does it take from Shimla or Delhi?

We plan 8 to 10 hours for the Shimla to Yulla Khas drive. From Delhi, our package adds an overnight bus to Shimla first.

What is the distance from Yulla Khas to the lake?

Travel Coffee describes it as about 12 km one way. Exact distance depends on the route, and online round trip figures conflict.

How difficult is the trek for beginners?

The government grades it easy, while we call it moderate. The steep upper section and altitude deserve respect, whatever the label says.

How do I get from Tapri to Yulla Khas?

You can take a local bus, a taxi or a prearranged transfer. Confirm current bus timings locally.

Can I stay overnight at Yulla Kanda?

You can stay in a Yulla Khas homestay or at an authorised campsite. Reconfirm exactly where camping is currently permitted before you go.

Do I need a guide?

A guide helps with navigation, weather reading and safe turnaround decisions. We strongly suggest one for first timers and solo trekkers.

Are permits or campsite permissions required?

Indian travellers do not need an inner line permit for our route. Forest or campsite permissions remain unsettled, so verify them before travelling.

Which months are best for visiting?

The usual season runs from about mid May to October. Always confirm weather and trail conditions for your exact dates.

What does it cost, and will I have mobile signal?

Our package lists ₹7,499 triple and ₹8,999 double from Delhi or Chandigarh, ₹1,000 less from Shimla, subject to reconfirmation. Expect patchy mobile signal.
