Sissu in February 2027: Is It Open? Snowfall, Weather & Tourist Restrictions Explained

Visiting Sissu in February can be a completely different experience from travelling there during summer.
Snow covered mountains, frozen waterfalls and quiet winter surroundings make it an attractive destination for travellers looking for a proper winter experience in Lahaul Valley.
But before planning your trip, there is one important question to consider: is Sissu actually accessible in February?
The opening of the Atal Tunnel has made access to Sissu easier than the old Rohtang Pass route, but that does not mean the road remains open in every weather condition.
Heavy snowfall, icy stretches and local traffic restrictions can affect travel, and tourist movement may depend on the latest administration orders.
If you are planning a February 2027 visit, it is worth understanding the expected weather, snowfall conditions, road accessibility and possible tourist restrictions before booking your stay.
This guide by Travel Coffee will explain what to expect and how to plan your Sissu trip realistically.
Quick Answer
As of 31 October 2026, nobody has officially confirmed whether tourists can visit Sissu in February 2027. The local bodies have not announced the 2027 restriction dates yet.
Do not assume Sissu in February will be open. The village restricted tourism during February in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The Atal Tunnel can run normally while Sissu itself stays closed to tourists, because the tunnel and the village follow separate rules.
So the honest answer today is: unconfirmed, with a strong history of February restrictions.
The Mistake Most Tourists Make About Sissu in February
We see this every winter. A traveller watches cars come out of the tunnel on the Lahaul side and decides Sissu must be open.
In February, those two things have no connection. The road can work while the village asks tourists to stay away.
This is why we keep our Sissu trip plans flexible around January and February instead of selling fixed winter dates.
If you already have February dates and want a straight answer the moment the 2027 notice comes out, message us.
Is Sissu Open in February 2027?

The only accurate answer right now is that the 2027 rules are not out. Anyone who gives you a firm yes or no today is guessing.
What we do know is the pattern. February has fallen inside Sissu's religious quiet period every year from 2024 to 2026.
Keep two separate questions in your head. The first is whether the highway through Sissu can carry traffic. The second is whether Sissu is open for leisure tourism.
Road access means vehicles can pass. Tourism access means you can stop, stay, sightsee and book activities.
In recent Februaries, the first has never guaranteed the second. Plan around both, not just the road.
What happened in 2024, 2025 and 2026?
In 2024, Sissu restricted tourism from 15 January to 28 February.
For 2025, local bodies announced the same 15 January to 28 February window. Reports differ on the exact day enforcement actually began, so do not treat that start date as precise.
In 2026, the Sissu Gram Panchayat announced a tourism suspension from 20 January to 28 February, a period of 40 days.
That 2026 restriction covered the villages under Sissu Panchayat and stopped tourism linked operations.
A separate order in 2026 made things stricter. The Keylong SDM restricted ordinary vehicle movement from Kuthbihal towards Koksar and Sissu from 14 January until further orders.
Here is the detail most guides miss
The SDM traffic order started on 14 January, before the Panchayat's own 20 January date.
So in 2026, a traveller who checked only the Panchayat dates could still have found the road shut in mid January.
Three straight years of February restrictions is a strong reason to wait for the official 2027 notice. Do not assume the village will run normally just because no one has announced anything yet.
Why Does Sissu Restrict Tourists During February?
The main reason is Halda and the worship of local deities that goes with it. These community religious observances need a quiet period in the village.
This is not simply a snow closure. Snow matters for the roads, but the tourist restriction comes from the community's religious calendar.
Local religious and community bodies jointly supported the previous restrictions. The decision comes from the people who live here, not from outsiders.
Halda is not a show staged for visitors. It belongs to the families of the valley, and the quiet is part of how they observe it.
What we tell our travellers is simple. If the village asks for quiet during these weeks, we plan around it and do not look for ways to slip in.
You would not want strangers with selfie sticks walking through your home during your most important family rituals. Sissu is asking for the same respect.
What Exactly Can Be Closed During the Sissu Restrictions?

Previous restrictions covered tourism linked operations, sightseeing and adventure activities. In practice, the whole tourist side of Sissu goes quiet.
In 2026, reports listed specific activities that stopped: ATV riding, hot air ballooning, zip lining, skiing, bungee jumping and tube sliding.
The 2026 SDM order also prohibited tourist activities in Koksar, Sissu, Dimphuk and Ramthang. So the quiet zone stretched beyond Sissu village itself.
The related vehicle restriction exempted BRO, ambulances, fire services, police and other essential emergency vehicles. Ordinary tourist vehicles did not get that exemption.
Nobody has confirmed whether the 2027 restriction will cover the same activities and the same villages. Read the 2026 list as a guide to what could close, not a promise of what will.
A warning about February packages sold early
If anyone sells you a confirmed Sissu snow package with ATV rides or tube sliding for February 2027 right now, be careful. They are selling something nobody can confirm yet.
Here is the money saving rule we follow ourselves. Do not prepay for any Sissu activity or Sissu stay in February until the official 2027 notice is out.
Keep your bookings refundable, or pay only for the parts of the trip based in Manali. You lose nothing by waiting a few weeks for clarity.
Is the Atal Tunnel Open in February 2027?

The Atal Tunnel is 9.02 km long. It exists to give Manali and Lahaul and Spiti all season road connectivity.
But all season connectivity does not mean the road stays open to tourists every hour of every winter day. That is the part people miss.
Heavy snowfall, snow clearance work, black ice and safety restrictions can all stop tourist traffic for a while.
Winter 2026 showed exactly this. After heavy snow, access through the tunnel corridor stopped for a time, and authorities then allowed only restricted tourist movement.
We cannot promise tunnel access on any specific February 2027 date. Nobody honest can.
The good news is that Manali keeps working as a winter base even when the Lahaul side gets tricky. If you want a snow trip with a safer anchor, look at our Manali tour packages first and add Sissu only if it opens.
The timing trick that saves most winter trips
Never put your Sissu day on the first or last day of your Manali stay. Put it in the middle.
If snow or a restriction blocks the road that day, you still have another day to try. Travellers who keep Sissu for the last morning before their bus or flight usually lose it completely.
What Is the Sissu Temperature in February?

We want to be careful here, because a lot of wrong numbers float around online. Reliable official long term averages for Sissu itself are hard to verify.
A local Sissu source estimates February daytime highs around minus 3°C to 3°C. The same source puts night lows around minus 10°C to minus 16°C.
Treat those as local estimates, not an official climate record.
The nearest useful official data comes from the IMD station at Keylong. Its older 1971 to 2000 table gives February a mean daily maximum of 6.0°C and a mean daily minimum of minus 17.7°C.
Keylong is a different place in the valley, so its numbers work only as a rough climate guide. They are not Sissu's exact average.
The safe way to read all this: February days can sit around freezing during cold spells, and nights can fall well below freezing.
Sunshine, cloud cover and western disturbances change things a lot from one week to the next. A sunny afternoon can feel pleasant, and the same evening can feel brutal.
Why do some websites show much warmer temperatures for Sissu?
Some generic weather databases pull figures from an unsuitable station or location. That can make a high Himalayan village look like a mild town in winter.
If a site shows Sissu in February sitting well above freezing with no snow, do not pack for that. Trust local forecasts and official Himachal weather and road advisories closer to your dates.
A generic monthly number tells you very little about the actual week you travel.
Does It Snow in Sissu in February?

Yes, Sissu is a real high altitude winter snow destination. The village sits at about 3,130 metres in Lahaul and Spiti district, on the right bank of the Chandra River.
In February, snow commonly lies on the valley floor. That is the white landscape most people picture when they search for Sissu in winter.
But snow on the ground and fresh snowfall are two different things. You can usually expect the first in deep winter. Nobody can guarantee the second on your exact dates.
Here is the honest downside. A big snowfall makes the valley look its best and makes getting there hardest.
Road clearing and traffic restrictions often follow heavy snow. The prettiest morning of your trip can also be the morning the road stays shut.
What Is Sissu Lake Like in February?

Local winter sources describe Sissu Lake and the nearby water bodies as largely frozen or snow covered in deep winter.
So Sissu Lake in February usually looks white and flat rather than the green and blue you see in summer photos.
Exact ice conditions change with the weather. Nobody can promise the lake will be completely frozen on any given day.
Please do not walk on the lake ice. You cannot judge how thick ice is just by looking at it, and a frozen surface can hide thin patches.
Take your photos from the edge. The view from the bank is the same view, without the risk.
Also remember the order of things. Even perfect lake conditions mean nothing if the Sissu tourism restriction is in force that week.
Can You See the Sissu Waterfall in February?

Local winter reports describe heavy ice forming on the Sissu Waterfall in deep winter. On a cold week, it can look like a wall of white columns down the cliff.
How much of it freezes changes with the weather, so do not plan your day around a fully frozen fall.
Never stand underneath hanging ice. It can break off without warning, and you do not want to be below it when it does.
And the same rule applies here as everywhere else in this guide. You can visit the waterfall only if the village allows tourist entry on that day.
Can You Stay Overnight in Sissu in February 2027?
Do not make a non refundable Sissu booking for February 2027 until someone confirms the restriction status.
Previous restrictions suspended tourism operations in the village. An open highway does not mean hotels and homestays will take guests.
What we tell our travellers every winter is this: keep Manali as your secure base, and treat Sissu as a conditional extra.
If the notice comes out and Sissu is open on your dates, you add a day there. If not, you lose nothing and your trip still works.
We have seen too many people pay in advance for a snow view stay in Lahaul, then spend the trip chasing refunds on the phone. Flexible bookings in Manali avoid that headache.
If Sissu stays closed, Manali still has plenty to fill your days. Our guide to adventure activities in Manali helps you plan the rest of your time there.
How Do You Reach Sissu from Manali When It Is Open?
Sissu is about 39 to 40 km by road from Manali through the Atal Tunnel under normal routing.
On paper that sounds like a short hop. Manali to Sissu in February is a different story, so we do not quote a fixed winter drive time, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
After snowfall, normal journey estimates stop meaning much. Police checks, traffic controls, snow clearing and icy patches can all slow you down.
Our team recommends hiring an experienced local winter driver. If you have never driven on snow, February in Lahaul is not the place to learn.
Black ice is the real danger on this stretch. It looks like a wet road and grips like glass.
With night lows that a local source puts as low as minus 16°C, shaded bends can stay icy long after the sun comes up. Let a driver who knows those bends handle them.
Our favourite chai stop when Sissu is open
When the village allows tourists, our team always stops at the small dhabas along the highway in Sissu village, right beside the road.
Get a hot chai and a plate of Maggi before you walk anywhere in the snow. Warm hands and a full stomach make the cold far easier to enjoy.
Carry cash for these stops. Small roadside places in the mountains do not always take UPI when the network drops.
Do You Need a 4x4 or Snow Chains for Sissu in February?

No permanent rule says every tourist needs a 4x4 on every winter day.
After heavy snowfall, though, authorities can restrict movement or allow only vehicles they consider suitable for the conditions.
The police or district advisory for that day beats anything you read in a travel blog, including this one.
Nobody has published vehicle rules for February 2027. We will not guess them for you.
Here is a small insider habit that helps
When you book a taxi in Manali, ask the driver directly whether the vehicle carries snow chains and whether he has driven through the tunnel after fresh snow.
A driver who answers both questions confidently is worth a slightly higher fare. A driver who hesitates is a sign to keep looking.
How Do You Check Whether Sissu Is Open Before Leaving Manali?
Start with the official Lahaul and Spiti district road status page. Its own travel information says route availability depends on the road and weather conditions of the day.
Next, check the current advisories from the Lahaul and Spiti administration and the district police.
Then confirm with your hotel, driver or local tour operator on the same day you plan to go.
A road update from a week ago tells you almost nothing. One overnight snowfall can change access completely.
We check the evening before and again early on the morning of travel. If both checks look clear, the driver rolls. If either looks doubtful, we switch to a Manali day.
In our experience, the safest winter plans are the ones where the Sissu day stays flexible until you have checked the road and the local restrictions.
Want us to check the road and the village status for your exact dates? Send us a message.
Should You Plan Sissu for February 2027?

Here is our clear recommendation. Do not make Sissu the non refundable anchor of a February 2027 holiday while the restriction notice remains unpublished.
If you stay in Manali, keep Sissu as a conditional day trip. It happens only if both the tourism rules and the road allow it on that day.
This way, Sissu in February becomes a bonus if it works out, not the one thing your whole holiday depends on.
Our team recommends confirming the village status first and then building the snow day around what is genuinely open.
Historically, the February restriction has ended by the end of February. That could make March a simpler month for Sissu tourism.
Still, you need to verify the weather and the 2027 rules for March too. A past pattern is not a promise.
And if your real dream is the wider Lahaul and Spiti region, those trips make far more sense once the high roads open in summer. Our Lahaul and Spiti Valley tours show what that looks like.
Is Rohtang Pass an Alternative to Sissu in February?

No. Skip any February plan built around Rohtang Pass.
Official Himachal Tourism information says heavy winter snow normally closes Rohtang from about late November until spring.
Some travellers think a Rohtang permit gets them through. It does not. A permit cannot open a road that winter has closed.
If someone in Manali offers you a February trip to Rohtang itself, ask exactly where the vehicle will stop. The pass itself stays closed, so the answer tells you what you are really paying for.
If you are thinking of moving your holiday later in the season, read our guide to Rohtang Pass in March before you change any bookings.
What Should You Pack for Sissu in February?

Start with thermal base layers, top and bottom. Everything else sits on top of them, and they do the most work when the sun drops.
Over that, carry an insulated winter jacket and a waterproof outer layer. Snow soaks through ordinary jackets quickly once you start playing in it.
Pack warm gloves and a cap that covers your ears. Cold hands ruin a snow day faster than anything else.
Wear waterproof shoes with strong grip. Sports shoes with smooth soles slip on packed snow and get soaked within minutes.
Carry sunglasses and sunscreen. Sunlight bouncing off snow is hard on your eyes and skin, even when the air feels freezing.
Keep a power bank in an inside pocket. Phone batteries drain faster in the cold, and you do not want a dead phone when you need to call your driver.
Finally, bring your essential medicines from home. Small mountain shops may not stock exactly what you need.
