Rent or Buy Winter Gear for Spiti in 2026? Jackets, Boots, Costs and Pickup Options

You are standing in your room, wishlist open, wondering whether to spend ₹3,000 on a jacket you might wear once, or rent it and pray it fits. That is the real question behind winter Spiti gear, and most guides answer it badly.

Here is the honest version, from a team that plans these trips every cold season.

For most first-time winter Spiti travellers, a mix works best. Own your personal layers like thermals, socks and gloves. Then decide on the expensive jacket and boots based on how often you actually expect to travel in serious cold.

One thing almost nobody tells you first. A deep-winter Spiti trip reaches Kaza through Shimla and Kinnaur, because Kunzum Pass shuts for the season. So do not build your gear plan around renting in Manali. It is the wrong side of the mountain.

What Winter Gear Do You Actually Need for Spiti?

The layering system that works in Spiti

Cold in Spiti is not a single-jacket problem. It is a layering problem.

Start with a thermal base layer that moves sweat off your skin. On top of that, a fleece or wool mid-layer to trap heat. Then an insulated jacket. Then, where the wind bites or snow falls, a wind and water shell.

Why bother with four thinner pieces instead of one fat jacket? Because you can adjust. Walking uphill at noon in the sun, you strip a layer. Standing at a monastery viewpoint at dusk, you add it back. One thick fashion jacket only knows one temperature, and Spiti has about six a day.

Your lower body, hands, head and feet matter too

People obsess over the jacket and forget everything below the waist.

You need thermal bottoms, a warm pair of trousers over them, and thick wool socks. Get proper gloves, not woollen mittens that soak through. Cover your head and face, because wind chill goes for your ears and cheeks first.

Footwear is where trips go wrong. Your shoes must be waterproof and grip well on ice and packed snow. Wet feet at minus 15 are not an inconvenience, they are the thing you will remember for all the wrong reasons.

What not to depend on

Ordinary sneakers, thin fashion jackets and anything cotton that stays wet are poor choices here.

Cotton holds moisture against your skin and pulls heat out of you. Smooth-soled sneakers turn every icy patch into a slip. A thin puffer looks the part in photos and does nothing at real Spiti night temperatures. Skip them and save yourself the misery.

Should You Rent or Buy Winter Gear for Spiti?

Rent if this is probably your only serious winter trip

If you rarely go anywhere truly cold, renting the big items makes sense. You save money, and you do not store a bulky snow jacket in a Mumbai or Delhi cupboard for the next three years.

Renting only works when the fit is right and the item actually suits the conditions. A loose parka or worn-out boots will let you down no matter how cheap the rental looked.

Buy if you expect more winter trips

If you can see yourself doing another snow trip, buying starts to make sense, especially for boots.

Owning your footwear removes the guesswork around fit, waterproofing and whether the rental place even has your size that week. The retail prices further down will give you a realistic feel for the spend before you decide.

The hybrid option

This is what we usually suggest. Own your thermals, socks, gloves and accessories. Treat the jacket and boots as two separate calls.

Plenty of travellers rent a jacket but buy boots, because footwear fit is deeply personal and a bad boot ruins a good day faster than anything else.

How Much Does Winter Gear for Spiti Cost in 2026?

Let me give you real numbers so you can plan with your eyes open.

On the buying side, we checked Decathlon in September 2026. Their NH500 men's winter hiking jacket rated to -10°C sits at ₹3,299. The NH100 waterproof winter boots are ₹2,999, and the warmer SH500 X-WARM waterproof snow boots come to ₹3,499.

For layers, the BL500 thermal top is ₹999 and the BL500 thermal bottoms are also ₹999. A MH100 full-zip fleece runs ₹799. 

Add a jacket, boots and a full set of layers and you are looking at a proper investment, but one you keep. These are September 2026 snapshots, and retail prices can shift, so check before you buy.

On the rental side, Kosha lists a men's parka from ₹1,490 with a 7-day rental option shown. Here is the catch people miss. Kosha also holds a refundable security deposit of ₹5,000 for coats and jackets, and ₹8,000 for parkas. 

That deposit is not the rental fee. It is money blocked on your card that comes back after you return the gear in good shape, subject to their terms. Budget for the deposit hitting your account, even if you get it back later.

A Shimla rental listing shows a winter jacket at ₹150 and trekking shoes at ₹250, but because the listing does not specify the rental duration, treat these only as indicative prices rather than confirmed per-day rates.

A 2026 Himachal packing guide mentions Manali snow-suit rentals at around ₹200 to ₹250 per day, but actual rates can vary by shop, season and rental duration, so confirm the price locally before relying on it.

What Kind of Jacket Is Warm Enough for Winter Spiti?

Temperature labels on jackets are useful, but they are a specification, not a promise.

A "-10°C" rating tells you how that jacket was tested, usually with the wearer already in base and mid-layers, moving, not standing still in wind at night. Judge the whole system instead, thermals plus fleece plus insulation plus a wind shell, not one number on a tag.

A widely used 2026 winter Spiti guide puts December and January Kaza night temperatures roughly around -15°C to -25°C, with colder extremes possible. Treat that as a planning range, not a forecast.

So no, a -10°C jacket on its own is not something to lean on at -20°C. And no, the most expensive jacket on the shelf does not automatically fix the cold either. Layers do the real work.

Do You Really Need Snow Boots in Spiti?

Waterproofing and grip are the whole point in winter Spiti.

Snow melts a little under the midday sun, then refreezes into ice. Slush turns to glass. Your soles need real tread to bite, and the uppers need to keep water out. 

Either dedicated snow boots or good waterproof high-ankle winter trekking boots can do the job, depending on how much walking and snow you expect.

Smooth-soled sneakers are the one clear mistake. Also, make sure your footwear leaves room for a thick winter sock without going tight, because a squeezed foot gets cold fast.

If you rent boots, inspect them before you accept. Check the tread depth, look for any sole separation, run a finger along the seams and the waterproof lining. Worn boots are worse than no boots when you slip.

Where Can You Rent or Pick Up Winter Gear Before Spiti?

Option 1: Buy before Shimla, including the Solan Decathlon

Decathlon India's official store locator currently shows one physical store in Himachal Pradesh, listed as Decathlon Solan at G Square Mall.

Solan sits on the way up from the plains toward Shimla, so it can work as a last proper shopping stop. 

Call ahead and confirm stock, hours and your exact shoe and jacket size before you make a special detour, because driving out of your way only to find your size gone is a bad start to a trip.

Option 2: Local rental options in Shimla

Shimla has trekking and winter-equipment rental listings, including jackets and shoes.

Those very cheap figures floating around, a jacket at ₹150 and shoes at ₹250, do not specify the rental period, so treat them only as indicative local prices rather than confirmed daily rates.

Phone the shop first and confirm size, how many days the price covers, the security deposit and how returns work. A five-minute call saves a wasted trip across town.

Option 3: Doorstep rental before leaving home

SharePal currently offers winter jackets rated to -10°C, snow boots and waterproof trekking footwear.

Order early enough that the gear reaches you with days to spare, so you can try everything on and swap anything that does not fit before you leave.

Option 4: Kosha online rental or Mumbai pickup

Kosha rents winter jackets and snow pants, and says orders normally arrive in 3 to 5 business days.

If you are in Mumbai, you can collect gear in person at Kosha, 4 Nav Meghdoot, 535 Linking Road, Khar West, Mumbai 400052. 

One thing to plan around, Kosha does not rent thermals or base layers, and does not rent accessories like gloves and socks, so you buy those yourself. And remember the deposits sit separately from the rental charge, as covered earlier.

Why Manali rental shops are not the main answer for winter Spiti

This is the part most guides get plain wrong.

Yes, Manali has snow-wear rental shops. They are great for Manali, Solang and Sissu. But the Keylong-Kaza link over Kunzum Pass closes in winter, roughly from October or November until June or July.

In the 2025-26 season, that road stayed shut for more than six months and reopened for light 4x4 vehicles only on 20 May 2026. So a traveller heading to Kaza in deep winter comes through Shimla and Kinnaur, not Manali. 

We have seen travellers plan a Manali pickup without realising winter Spiti is approached from the Shimla side, then scramble at the last minute. Do not drive to Manali just to rent clothes for a winter Spiti trip.

What Should You Always Buy Instead of Rent?

Thermals, socks and personal accessories are the items to own, every time.

These sit against your skin, so hygiene matters. Owning them means a consistent fit you trust, and it means you carry dry spares, which is the difference between a good night and a cold, damp one. 

Not every rental company bans these outright, but as a rule they are yours to buy. Kosha specifically does not rent thermals, base layers or accessories, so that decision is made for you there anyway.

What Should You Check Before Accepting Rental Gear?

Try the jacket on while already wearing your base and mid-layer, not over a T-shirt. It needs to fit over your real winter setup, not your bedroom outfit.

Check the zips run smoothly, the hood cinches, the cuffs seal and the seams and insulation look intact. For boots, look at tread depth, check the sole is not separating from the upper, and press the waterproof lining. 

Then wear the complete outfit at home or in your pickup city before you head into the mountains, because a problem found in Shimla is fixable and the same problem found in Kaza is not.

Why Your Pickup Location Matters More in Winter Spiti

Official Lahaul and Spiti district information gives Shimla to Kaza as 412 km and about 20 hours of driving, excluding an overnight halt.

The same official source describes this route as almost all-weather up to Kaza, though temporary snow or road closures can still happen. Meanwhile the Keylong-to-Kaza link over Kunzum closes seasonally. 

Put those two facts together and it is obvious why Shimla, Solan and advance home delivery beat Manali as winter pickup points. Your gear needs to be with you on the road you are actually driving.

Do You Need Any Permit for a Winter Spiti Trip?

Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit for normal Spiti Valley tourism. You can travel freely.

Foreign nationals need the applicable Protected Area Permit or Inner Line Permit for the notified border areas in Kinnaur and Spiti. If you are an international traveller, reconfirm the current process before you leave, since procedures get updated.

A Practical Packing Strategy for a 7-10 Day Winter Spiti Trip

Think of it as one full system you carry and keep dry, not a shopping list.

Whatever you rent, the outer jacket does not replace your personal base layers. 

Pack thermals top and bottom, a fleece, an insulated jacket, warm trousers, several pairs of dry socks so you always have a fresh set, waterproof footwear, solid gloves, head and face cover, and sunglasses for the fierce high-altitude glare off snow. 

Rotate socks daily and dry the used ones inside your sleeping bag or by the room heater.
