Christmas & New Year in Sissu 2026-27: Snow, Hotels, Road Crowds & What to Know Before Booking

Sissu18 minutes read
new year in sissu

Most people booking a New Year’s in Sissu trip worry about one thing: will it snow at night?

The bigger risk sits on the road. Sissu itself stays quiet, but the Manali, Solang and Atal Tunnel corridor that leads there can jam for hours in the holiday week.

Here is what most tourists get wrong. They read "Atal Tunnel is open" and assume Sissu is an easy hop from Manali. On a clear day it is. After a snow spell, it can turn into a long wait at a police barrier.

We plan this exact holiday week with travellers every winter. This guide by Travel Coffee gives you the honest version: snow odds, road reality, hotel checks and a plan that still works on a bad weather day.

Quick Answer: Should You Spend Christmas or New Year in Sissu 2026-27?

Yes, if you want snow scenery, peaceful winter views and a much quieter evening than central Manali.

Nobody can guarantee fresh snowfall on December 25 or December 31, though you may still find older snow on the ground.

Sissu village can feel calm while the Manali, Solang and Atal Tunnel road stays badly crowded through the holiday week.

Road access can change within hours after snowfall. A flexible itinerary and refundable bookings help you far more than any promise of guaranteed snow, which is exactly how we build our Sissu tour packages.

What Is Sissu Actually Like During Christmas and New Year?

What Is Sissu Actually Like During Christmas and New Year?

Sissu is a snow and silence trip, not a party trip.

You come here for white slopes across the Chandra valley when the snow cover holds, a long breakfast in the sun and a cold, quiet night with very little traffic noise.

It suits couples, families, photographers and anyone who wants a slow winter escape from the plains.

It does not suit people who want clubs, packed cafes or a big public countdown. If that is your idea of New Year, central Manali gives you far more choice.

Why the 2026-27 calendar matters for your booking

Christmas Day, December 25, 2026 falls on a Friday. So does New Year's Day, January 1, 2027.

That gives you two long weekends back to back. Expect demand to bunch around those Friday to Sunday nights, both on the road and at hotels.

Here is a simple money saving move: If you can travel between the two holidays, ask your hotel to quote a midweek stay too, such as Sunday, December 27 to Wednesday, December 30.

Weekend nights in a holiday week face the most demand, so a midweek quote gives you a real comparison before you commit.

Ask before you assume there is a New Year party

Do not assume every Sissu hotel runs a New Year programme.

Ask the hotel directly whether they plan a special dinner, a bonfire or music on December 31, and whether your room price includes it. Get the answer on WhatsApp so you have it in writing.

For your chai fix, stop at one of the small dhabas on the main road through Sissu village. A hot cup in the afternoon sun there feels better than any cafe plan in this cold.

Will There Be Snow in Sissu at Christmas or New Year 2026-27?

Will There Be Snow in Sissu at Christmas or New Year 2026-27?

This is the question we hear most in November and December. The honest answer has two parts.

Snow on the ground is different from fresh snowfall

Two different things hide under the word "snow". One is old snow already lying on the fields and slopes from earlier storms. The other is snow actually falling while you stand there.

You can arrive on a dry, sunny day and still see plenty of old snow around Sissu.

The opposite also happens. A long dry spell can thin the snow cover on exposed slopes and sunny roadsides, so the valley looks browner than the photos you saved.

Can anybody guarantee snow on December 25 or December 31?

No. Not us, not your hotel, not any website. Anyone who promises fresh snow on a fixed date is guessing.

Last season shows why. Christmas 2025 around Manali stayed fairly dry.

Then on New Year's Day, January 1, 2026, reports showed fresh snowfall at Sissu, around Atal Tunnel, at Solang and in other higher areas.

That was one season. It tells you snow can arrive in this window. It does not tell you it will arrive on your dates in 2026-27.

When should you check for Sissu snowfall in December?

Check a short-range forecast in the last few days before you leave, not three weeks earlier. Long-range mountain forecasts keep changing.

Our insider tip: ask your hotel or driver to send you a photo taken that day or the day before. A fresh phone photo of the hotel lawn tells you more than any old reel.

Then check road information on the morning you travel. The same snow that makes Sissu beautiful can also close the approach for a few hours.

Late December does not guarantee snow. Plan a trip that still feels good if the sky stays blue.

How Cold Is Sissu at the End of December?

How Cold Is Sissu at the End of December?

Expect a serious cold, even if you have done Shimla or Manali in winter before.

Days can sit around freezing or reach low single digits Celsius, depending on sunshine and weather. Nights stay below zero and can turn severely cold.

Sissu sits at around 3,120 m. At this height, sun and shade feel like two different seasons.

In direct sun after breakfast, you might pull your gloves off for a photo. Step into shade or catch the wind coming down the valley, and your fingers go numb fast.

Why winter hotel basics matter more than decor

This is why a working room heater, reliable hot water and power backup matter far more than a glass wall or a fancy lobby.

What we tell our travellers every December is simple: a plain room with a heater that works beats a beautiful room that turns into a fridge at 2 AM.

Pack thermals, a proper down or insulated jacket, wool socks, gloves and a warm cap, even if your hotel looks cosy in the photos.

Keep one warm layer in the car too. If traffic stops near the tunnel, you want it in your hands, not in the boot under three bags.

Is the Manali to Sissu Road Open During Christmas and New Year?

Is the Manali to Sissu Road Open During Christmas and New Year?

Usually reachable, never guaranteed. The tunnel changed winter travel on this side of Himachal, but it did not switch off the weather.

What Atal Tunnel changes for a Manali to Sissu drive in December

Atal Tunnel runs 9.02 km through the mountain and connects Manali with Lahaul-Spiti year-round by bypassing Rohtang Pass.

Its South Portal sits 25 km from Manali at about 3,060 m. The North Portal comes out near Teling and Sissu at about 3,071 m.

Sissu village is roughly 40 km from Manali. On paper, that is a short drive.

Why an open tunnel does not guarantee an easy Sissu drive

The tunnel is one structure. The roads on both sides are open mountain roads, and they take the full force of winter.

Heavy snow, black ice, avalanche warnings, snow clearing work or police traffic controls can stop or slow you on the approach, even while the tunnel itself works normally.

So do not plan around a line like "Atal Tunnel is open 365 days no matter what". Plan around what the police and the district allow on your actual travel day.

In our early November 2026 check, the official district road-status page lists Manali to Keylong as open. That tells you about today. It says nothing about December 24 or January 1.

Do you need an e-pass for Sissu?

Plan for one. The official Himachal e-Aagman portal currently says vehicles entering Lahaul & Spiti must apply for an E-Pass.

The portal separates E-Permit and E-Ticket categories depending on your destination or circuit. Open the live portal right before your journey and pick the category that fits your vehicle and route.

We have not confirmed the current fee, so we will not quote one here.

A quick scam warning: apply on the official portal yourself. If a roadside agent or a stranger in a travel group offers to "arrange" your e-pass for extra cash, say no and walk away.

Can tourists stop at Atal Tunnel North Portal?

In April 2026, the Lahaul-Spiti administration restricted stopping, parking and gathering in vulnerable areas around the North Portal because of avalanche and snow-slide risk.

The April 2026 restriction may have been updated, extended or withdrawn by December 2026. Check the latest Lahaul and Spiti administration notices for the North Portal before travelling, especially for stopping and parking restrictions.

Our honest advice: skip the North Portal selfie stop even if nobody stops you. Cars halting for photos back up traffic on a winter road, and the slopes above carry real snow risk. You will get calmer photos in Sissu without blocking anyone.

If you want a Manali base for part of the trip, our Manali tour packages keep a weather-flexible Sissu day inside the plan.

How Bad Are Christmas and New Year Road Crowds?

How Bad Are Christmas and New Year Road Crowds?

Bad enough to plan your whole trip around them. Here is what the 2024 holiday week looked like, as history and not as a forecast.

During the December 2024 Christmas rush, police reported 6,614 vehicle movements in and out of the Lahaul region through Atal Tunnel.

On December 21, 2024 alone, 3,464 vehicles entered between 8 am and 8 pm.

Then the weather turned. Heavy snowfall on December 23 and 24, 2024 left more than 1,000 vehicles stuck between Solang and Atal Tunnel.

A later report said rescue teams helped around 8,000 tourists during the wider snow disruption.

In the final four days of 2024, reports put around 1.5 lakh tourists in Manali, with hotel occupancy above 80 percent.

What these numbers mean for your Sissu trip

Sissu can still feel calm once you reach it. The trouble sits on the single corridor everybody uses: Manali, Solang, the tunnel and back.

Those 1,000-plus stuck vehicles are why we tell every winter traveller to start with a full fuel tank and carry water, snacks, a charged power bank and warm layers inside the car.

Timing changes this trip completely. That December 21 count covers just 12 daytime hours, so leave Manali early and cross the tunnel before most of that day's traffic joins the queue.

On the way back, start early enough that you clear the Solang stretch well before dark. Icy roads and long queues feel twice as hard after sunset.

And never place Sissu right before a flight, a Volvo departure or an important onward transfer. One stuck afternoon can cost you the next leg of your holiday.

Should You Stay Overnight in Sissu or Visit From Manali?

Should You Stay Overnight in Sissu or Visit From Manali?

This one decision shapes your whole New Year in Sissu experience. Both options work. They just suit different travellers.

Stay in Sissu if you want the quieter winter experience

An overnight stay gives you what day visitors miss: an empty evening, a snowy morning before the cars arrive and soft early light for photos.

You step out after breakfast, and the road below stays quiet for a while. Day visitors from Manali only start turning up later.

For couples and photographers, that slow evening and early morning is the whole point of coming here in winter.

Stay in Manali if flexibility matters more

Manali gives you far more restaurants, more hotels and more backup activities if police restrict the road towards Sissu.

For first-time winter travellers, families with young kids or anyone with a tight onward connection, a Manali base usually means less stress.

If the road closes for a day, you still have a full town around you instead of a hotel room you cannot reach.

The practical compromise most first-timers do best with

For many first-time visitors, we suggest a Manali base with a weather-flexible Sissu day. You go when the road and sky cooperate, and you lose very little if they do not.

A one-night Sissu stay works well too, as long as you reconfirm the road and the hotel's heating and power a day or two before you travel.

Do not assume either option costs less. Prices change by date and property, so compare real quotes for your exact nights before you decide.

What Should You Check Before Booking a Sissu Hotel for New Year?

What Should You Check Before Booking a Sissu Hotel for New Year?

A lovely summer photo proves very little about the same room on a sub-zero December night. Ask these questions before you pay anything.

Start with room heating. Ask what kind of heater the room has, and whether it runs all night or only for a few hours.

Then ask about 24-hour hot water. Our insider tip: ask whether the geyser stays on during a power cut. Many travellers only discover the answer in a freezing bathroom.

Ask about power backup directly. A heater without power is just furniture.

Confirm meal availability for every night, including December 31. In a small village on a cold night, you may not find another kitchen open late.

Check winter parking access. If a property sits up a slope or down a side lane, ask whether your car can still reach the door after fresh snow or on an icy morning.

Ask what to expect from mobile signal and Wi-Fi, especially if someone in your group needs to work or stay reachable.

Read the cancellation terms closely. Road access depends on weather, so flexible or refundable terms protect you far more than a small discount does.

Finally, if the hotel advertises a New Year dinner or programme, ask whether your room price includes it or whether it costs extra.

We have not seen reliable Christmas or New Year 2026-27 room rates for Sissu yet, so we will not quote one here.

Festive hotel rates in Sissu vary by property, room category, availability and meal inclusions. Contact the hotel directly for a dated Christmas or New Year 2026-27 quote, and ask for the full amount in writing before booking.

How Early Should You Book Christmas and New Year Hotels?

Early, but not blindly. Festive demand around Manali is real, and the recent numbers show it.

Around New Year 2024-25, Manali hotel occupancy went above 80 percent.

Around Christmas 2025, reports said roughly 70 to 80 percent of Manali hotels had already filled ahead of December 31.

Those are Manali figures, not Sissu figures. We have no verified occupancy number for Sissu itself, so read them as a signal of overall holiday demand.

Our advice: book once your dates are reasonably firm, and choose sensible cancellation conditions over the cheapest non-refundable deal.

A cheap room you cannot reach because the road is closed turns into the most expensive room of your trip.

A Flexible 3N/4D Christmas or New Year Plan for Sissu

A Flexible 3N/4D Christmas or New Year Plan for Sissu

This is the shape we use most often for a Sissu winter holiday from Manali. It treats Sissu as a goal, not a fixed appointment.

Day 1: Reach Manali and keep the first evening easy

Arrive, check in, eat early and rest. The long road up from the plains tires you more than you expect.

Use the evening to check the next morning's weather, any police advice and the latest road information towards the tunnel.

Ask your hotel staff or driver what they heard that day. Locals usually know about a closure or a long queue before it shows up anywhere online.

Day 2: Solang, Atal Tunnel and Sissu if conditions permit

Leave early. Head through Solang towards the tunnel and on to Sissu, but treat the whole day as weather-dependent from the start.

If police allow traffic and the road looks clear, enjoy Sissu and either return before dark or stay the night if you booked it.

If conditions say no, turn it into a Solang or Manali day without fuss. You have Day 3 for a second try.

Day 3: Keep a genuine road and snow buffer

This is your safety net. If Sissu did not work on Day 2, retry only if the authorities and current conditions allow it.

If the road still says no, enjoy Manali instead. Our guide to adventure activities in Manali has ideas that do not depend on crossing the tunnel.

Day 4: Departure without a risky last-minute Sissu excursion

Keep Day 4 for travel only. Do not squeeze a quick Sissu run into the morning of a non-refundable flight or Volvo.

One snow spell or one long queue near the tunnel can hold you for hours, and departure day is the worst day to find that out.

What Is Your Plan B if the Sissu Road Closes?

What Is Your Plan B if the Sissu Road Closes?

After heavy snow, authorities can stop ordinary tourist vehicles below the tunnel or allow only suitable vehicles through.

The smart move is to swap the Sissu day, not to sit at a barrier for hours hoping it lifts. Waiting with no clear update just burns your daylight.

Depending on how far police allow traffic, a Solang day or a Manali day becomes your fallback.

Should You Self-Drive to Sissu in Late December?

You do not need a 4x4 on every winter day. When the road is dry, cleared and free of restrictions, ordinary cars can make the trip.

After significant snowfall, though, the authorities can impose stricter vehicle rules. Those rules apply to you whatever you drive.

Black ice is the real test of a winter driver

The danger you often cannot see is black ice: a thin, clear layer on the road that looks wet but grips like glass. Shaded bends and early mornings catch people most.

Driving well on normal mountain roads is not the same as driving on packed snow or ice. Braking, climbing and stopping all behave differently.

We have seen confident plains drivers lose their nerve on the first icy patch. When conditions look difficult, hire an experienced local winter driver who handles this road every season.

Police instructions always come first. Your car's ability never overrides a barrier or an officer's call.

Can You Combine Sissu With Chandratal or the Full Spiti Circuit?

Can You Combine Sissu With Chandratal or the Full Spiti Circuit?

Not the way you might picture from summer photos. Do not plan the Manali, Chandratal and Kaza route as though it runs normally in the Christmas and New Year week.

Chandratal runs during the summer season, and our own Chandratal opening guide explains why the lake stays out of reach through winter.

If Chandratal is your real goal, save it for a separate summer trip. In December, keep things simple with Manali, Solang and Sissu.

What About January 2027 Tourism Restrictions in Sissu?

If your winter trip stretches into January, read this part carefully.

Sissu Panchayat suspended tourism activities from January 20 to February 28, 2026 to protect local religious observances.

A separate administrative order also restricted vehicle movement towards Koksar and Sissu from January 14, 2026 during the festival period.

Similar winter tourism restrictions happened in 2024 and 2025 as well.

For 2027, we found no confirmed dates in the sources we checked in early November 2026. So the honest line is this: No confirmed tourism restriction dates for January 2027 have been announced in the sources checked so far.

If you plan to visit in mid or late January, check the latest Sissu Panchayat and local administration notices before booking.

Please do not assume the 2026 dates will repeat. If your trip falls in mid or late January, confirm with your hotel and the local administration before you pay.

These observances matter deeply to the families who live here, so plan around them rather than trying to work around them.

Who Should Book New Year in Sissu, and Who Should Skip It?

Book it if you are a couple, a photographer, a family comfortable with a serious cold, or anyone happy to keep the plan flexible.

Skip it if you expect guaranteed snowfall, big nightlife or a rigid road timetable.

Skip it too if you plan to self-drive no matter what the police and the weather say. That mindset turns a lovely trip into a dangerous one.

The Best New Year in Sissu Plan Is a Flexible One

The best New Year in Sissu plan never bets everything on one perfect day.

Confirm a winter-ready room, watch the road as your dates get close, keep one buffer day and hold Manali as your fallback.

Do that and you win either way: snow and silence in Sissu, or a relaxed Manali day with no panic at a barrier.

When you are ready to lock dates, our Sissu tour packages give you a winter plan with that buffer already built in.
