Sissu Snow Point 2026-27: Where to Find Snow, Activities, Charges & Winter Access

Sissu16 minutes read
sissu snow point

Every winter, travellers in Manali send us the same message: Atal Tunnel is open, so Sissu Snow Point must be open too.

Not always. Snow, road access and local tourism rules are three separate questions. Your day only works when all three say yes.

Quick Answer: Is Sissu Snow Point Worth Visiting in 2026-27?

Yes, if your dates line up. Sissu Snow Point is not one gated attraction. People use the name for the seasonal snow-play areas around Sissu in Lahaul, on the north side of Atal Tunnel.

Sissu sits about 38 to 40 km from Manali, at about 3,120 to 3,130 metres.

Your snow day depends on four things: snowfall, road clearance, police restrictions and Sissu Panchayat rules. Nobody can promise snow on an exact date.

If you want help building a trip around that uncertainty, start with our Sissu tour packages.

Where Exactly Is Sissu Snow Point?

Where Exactly Is Sissu Snow Point?

Here’s what most tourists get wrong. They type “Sissu Snow Point” into Google Maps, drive to the pin and expect a ticket counter at the end.

There’s no counter and no gate. The snow activity area changes with the season. It shifts with where the snow piles up and where local operators have permission to work that winter.

Picture the Sissu valley floor and a few activity patches near it. Don’t picture a ski resort.

Sissu Location on the Chandra River

Sissu lies on the right bank of the Chandra River in Lahaul and Spiti district. You reach it after you come out of Atal Tunnel on the Lahaul side.

One official reference puts Sissu at about 3,130 metres. Another government-linked document says about 3,120 metres. For your planning, call it about 3,120 to 3,130 metres.

That height matters. You climb from Manali to over 3,100 metres in a short drive, and your body notices even when your legs feel fine.

Why One Map Pin Can Mislead You

A pin someone dropped last winter may sit on bare ground this year. It may also sit inside a stretch where police have stopped vehicles that morning.

Here’s an insider tip our team swears by: ask at the police checkpoint, or ask a dhaba owner in Sissu, which patch the operators are using that day. Follow their directions and police instructions, not last year’s pin.

When Can You Find Snow at Sissu in 2026-27?

When Can You Find Snow at Sissu in 2026-27?

Snow and access don’t always arrive together. Here’s how each month tends to behave, with no promises on any single date.

November 2026

November is early winter. First snow can fall, especially higher up in Lahaul and around the tunnel area.

Don’t count on continuous snow on the Sissu valley floor yet. If deep snow is your only reason to go, November is less dependable than peak winter.

December 2026

December is one of the better planning windows. Winter snow normally builds up, and the Sissu religious tourism restrictions of recent years have generally not started yet.

Still, no December date comes with guaranteed snow. A dry week can leave the cover thin and patchy.

Christmas and New Year bring heavy traffic out of Manali. Leave early on those days and check the same-day road situation before you set off.

January 2027

Deep winter raises your chances of good snow. It also raises the chances of road disruption from fresh snowfall and black ice.

Now the most important line for anyone planning January:

As of 5 November 2026, no one has announced the 2027 Sissu Panchayat tourism restriction dates.

If a reel or blog tells you Sissu “closes on 15 January” or “closes on 20 January” in 2027, it’s copying old years forward. Those were the 2024 and 2026 start dates, not 2027 ones.

February 2027

February can still hold deep winter snow. But in each of the last three winters, 2024, 2025 and 2026, Sissu suspended tourism through 28 February.

A pattern is not a notice. The 2027 restriction dates will remain uncertain until Sissu Panchayat or the district administration issues an official announcement. Check the latest notice before finalising your February travel plans.

If your trip falls in February, plan Solang as your default snow stop. Treat Sissu as a bonus if a fresh notice allows tourism that month.

March 2027

Recent Panchayat tourism suspensions ended after 28 February, and snow can stay around Sissu into March.

Travellers in March 2026 reported significant snow around Sissu. Conditions change fast, though, so we can’t promise the same cover in March 2027.

If March is your month, our guide to Rohtang Pass in March helps you weigh the other snow options near Manali at the same time of year.

Is Sissu Snow Point Open in Winter 2026-27?

Is Sissu Snow Point Open in Winter 2026-27?

This question decides your whole day. Break it into three separate checks.

Check One: Is Atal Tunnel Operational?

Atal Tunnel, about 9.02 km long, gives Lahaul its all-weather road link to Manali.

An operational tunnel is the first yes you need. It is not the last.

Check Two: Are the Roads Before and After the Tunnel Open?

The roads approaching and leaving the tunnel can still shut. Snowfall, black ice, avalanche risk and police controls can all stop traffic while the tunnel itself works fine.

In our experience, this is where most winter Sissu plans fall apart. The tunnel runs, but the road to it doesn’t.

Check Three: Has Sissu Panchayat Suspended Tourism?

Most people skip this check entirely. Sissu Panchayat can suspend tourism activities on its own for religious and cultural observances, even on days when the roads run clear.

Here’s the recent history.

In 2024, Sissu stopped tourism activities from 15 January to 28 February.

In 2025, Sissu again restricted tourism from roughly mid January through 28 February.

In 2026, Sissu Panchayat suspended tourism from 20 January to 28 February. During that suspension, it prohibited ATV riding, skiing, ziplining and tube sliding.

On top of that, the administration separately restricted vehicles in the wider Koksar and Sissu belt during the Halda festival period.

What This Means for January and February 2027

As of 5 November 2026, no authority has announced official Sissu tourism closure dates for January or February 2027.

We won’t tell you Sissu is definitely closed from 15 or 20 January 2027, because no notice says so. We won’t tell you it’s open either. Check again once your dates get close.

How Do You Reach Sissu Snow Point From Manali?

How Do You Reach Sissu Snow Point From Manali?

Manali to Sissu Route via Atal Tunnel

The drive runs from Manali up past the Solang and Dhundi side, through Atal Tunnel, out onto the Lahaul side and on to Sissu.

Use about 38 to 40 km as your one-way planning distance.

We won’t quote a fixed driving time. Traffic, fresh snow, black ice and police barriers can change the same drive a lot from one day to the next.

On a clear-weather day, the trip feels simple compared with the old Rohtang route. In winter, though, a road that behaved well yesterday can turn difficult overnight.

Road Status as of 5 November 2026

As we write this on 5 November 2026, a route tracker shows Gramphoo to Sissu via Atal Tunnel as open.

That tells you about today, not your travel day. Our team recommends checking road access again on the morning you leave Manali, not just the night before.

The Timing Tip That Changes Your Day

The approach to the tunnel gets more crowded as the morning goes on. An early start puts you ahead of most tourist traffic and buys you more daylight at the snow.

Fill your fuel tank in Manali before you leave. You don’t want to hunt for a pump on the Lahaul side in freezing weather.

If you’d rather leave the driving and the daily road checks to someone else, browse our Manali tour packages.

Do You Need a Permit or Entry Ticket for Sissu Snow Point?

Sissu Snow Point Entry Fee

We have found no verified general entry ticket for Sissu village or for an official gated “Sissu Snow Point.”

You may pay separately for private activities, parking or other commercial services. Those charges belong to the operator or service. They don’t add up to a Sissu entry fee.

Scam warning: if someone at the roadside asks you to buy an “official Sissu Snow Point ticket,” ask which authority issued it and ask for a receipt. If they can’t answer, keep your money.

e-Aagman Vehicle Formalities for Lahaul

The official Himachal Pradesh e-Aagman portal says applicants with vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti must apply through its e-pass system.

The portal splits its passes by route. It lists an e-permit for the Atal Tunnel Rohtang/Koksar Chandratal circuit and an e-ticket for other places.

Don’t assume e-Aagman is free. The applicable e-Aagman fee depends on the permit category and route selected.

Check the amount displayed on the official e-Aagman portal when applying, before submitting your application.

Choose the correct route on the official portal, and check any fee it shows at the time you apply.

Insider tip: take screenshots of your e-Aagman details and vehicle documents while you still have a good network in Manali. Signal weakens on parts of the drive, and nobody at a checkpoint wants to wait while your phone loads.

Is a Rohtang Permit Needed for Sissu?

Don’t confuse the two systems. The Rohtang Pass tourism permit is completely separate from the Lahaul and Spiti e-Aagman system.

Driving through Atal Tunnel to Sissu is not the same as buying a Rohtang sightseeing permit. This mix-up lands in our WhatsApp inbox every winter, so sort out which system applies to your route before you leave.

What Snow Activities Can You Do at Sissu?

What Snow Activities Can You Do at Sissu?

Sissu’s snow activities run on an informal, seasonal basis. Local operators set up when the snow and the rules allow it.

Be honest with yourself here. If you expect a resort counter with a printed menu, Sissu will disappoint you.

Sissu Tube Ride and Sledging

Tubing and simple sledging come up most often in winter reports from Sissu. You sit in a tube or on a sled and slide down a gentle snow slope.

Treat these as casual snow activities, not resort facilities. They depend on enough snow and on operators actually turning up that day.

Snow Scooters and Snow Bikes

Powered snow rides appear only in season. Before you sit down, ask three things: the price, the length of the ride and the safety equipment.

ATV and Quad Riding

Private operators offer ATVs in the Sissu area during the season. They may stop for bad weather, heavy snow or administrative restrictions, sometimes after you’ve already driven up.

Skip the ATV when the snow looks thin or slushy. You’d pay ₹500 to ₹1,000 for a ride over muddy, broken snow that looks nothing like the photos that sold you the trip.

Free Snow Play and Photography

Snowball fights, building a snowman and photographs cost nothing wherever authorities permit public access. For many families we plan trips for, this free hour turns into the best part of the day.

Stay well away from traffic lanes, unsafe slopes and frozen river edges. Snow hides exactly where firm ground ends.

Skiing at Sissu

Skiing runs at least seasonally. Sissu Panchayat specifically listed skiing among the activities it prohibited during the 2026 suspension, which tells you operators offer it.

Sissu is not a developed ski resort, though. Don’t arrive expecting the setup of a dedicated ski centre.

How Much Do Sissu Snow Activities Cost in 2026-27?

How Much Do Sissu Snow Activities Cost in 2026-27?

Most important fact first: no verified official fixed tariff exists for Sissu Snow Point activities.

Local Sissu sources say pricing stays informal. It changes from operator to operator, and you generally pay per ride.

Sissu Snow Scooter Price and ATV Rates Online

One online Manali day-tour operator currently advertises these Sissu-area ranges.

ATV or quad riding: ₹500 to ₹1,000.

Snow scooter, basic skiing or sledding-type winter activities: ₹300 to ₹800.

These are indicative online operator rates, not an official government rate card. Confirm locally before paying.

Questions to Ask Before You Pay

Ask what the rate includes. Ask how long the ride lasts, how many riders it covers and what equipment comes with it.

Our money-saving tip: get quotes from two or three operators before you pick one. Operators set their own prices, so the first number you hear isn’t the only one on offer.

Watch out: if someone quotes above ₹1,000 for an ATV ride, or above ₹800 for a snow scooter or sled ride, ask exactly what extra you’re getting. If the answer stays vague, walk to the next operator.

Prices We Couldn’t Verify

We couldn’t find reliable 2026-27 prices for snow suits, boots, tubes or parking. We’d rather tell you that than guess.

Ask on the spot, and carry enough cash to cover whatever you decide to do.

What Is the Weather Like at Sissu Snow Point?

Sissu sits above 3,100 metres. Government-linked information says winter temperatures here fall below freezing.

We won’t give you daily highs and lows, because Sissu’s temperatures swing with every passing weather system.

What Drives Sissu Snow Point Weather

Sissu snow point weather depends on western disturbances, fresh snowfall, cloud cover, wind and sunshine.

A still, sunny afternoon can feel comfortable. A windy, cloudy one at the same temperature feels far colder.

Black Ice on Winter Roads

Black ice is the big winter road worry. It looks like an ordinary wet patch, and tyres lose grip on it without warning.

Drive slowly on shaded stretches, and let an experienced local driver handle the wheel if you’ve never driven on ice.

Snow Glare on Cold Days

Snow glare stays strong even on freezing days. Bright sun bouncing off white snow strains your eyes quickly.

Pack sunglasses even if the sky looks grey when you leave Manali.

What Should You Wear for Sissu Snow Point?

What Should You Wear for Sissu Snow Point?

Start with waterproof footwear with good grip. Regular sneakers soak through fast and slide on packed snow.

Add warm socks, thermal or insulating layers and a warm outer jacket. Finish with waterproof gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Waterproof clothing matters most for tubing and snow play. You sit on snow, you fall in snow, and cotton jeans turn cold and wet almost at once.

Insider tip: keep a spare pair of socks and dry gloves in the car for the drive back. Dry feet on the return make the whole day feel better.

We haven’t verified any gear rental prices for Sissu, so bring your own warm, waterproof layers wherever you can.

Is Sissu Better Than Solang Valley for Snow?

Is Sissu Better Than Solang Valley for Snow?

Neither wins every time.

Sissu gives you the wide, open Lahaul landscape. It can also hold snow on days when Manali town looks completely dry, which surprises a lot of first-timers.

Solang usually has more established, organised activity infrastructure. It also works as the practical backup on days when police stop traffic before Atal Tunnel.

Neither place stays quieter or cheaper all the time. Crowds and operator prices change by day and by season.

What We Tell Our Travellers

Here’s what we tell our travellers who want a reliable snow day: don’t lock the day to one location.

Keep both Sissu and Solang on the plan, decide on the morning, and you give yourself the best chance of snow either way.

Is Sissu Snow Point Safe for Families and Children?

Is Sissu Snow Point Safe for Families and Children?

Ordinary snow play and tubing on gentle slopes can suit families when operators run them responsibly.

Powered rides like ATVs and snow scooters need much more care, especially with young children.

Simple Rules for Parents

Supervise children directly, not from the car. Keep their gloves and shoes dry, and swap them once they get wet.

Watch for slippery ice underfoot. Keep kids well away from the road and from river edges.

Take the Altitude Slowly

Sissu sits above 3,100 metres. Avoid rushing into strenuous activity right after you arrive.

Our usual first stop: a cup of hot chai at one of the small dhabas on the main road through Sissu village. A slow chai break gives everyone, kids included, time to settle before the snow play starts.

Suggested One-Day Sissu Snow Trip From Manali

Suggested One-Day Sissu Snow Trip From Manali

Morning: Check Before You Drive

Start the day with three checks from Manali: the road, the weather and any Panchayat restriction in force that day.

If any one of them says no, switch plans before you burn fuel and time.

Leave Manali early enough to stay ahead of the worst tourist traffic. On holiday weekends and around Christmas and New Year, that matters even more.

Through the Tunnel and Into Lahaul

Drive through Atal Tunnel only if police and road conditions allow it that morning.

Once you reach Sissu, follow the currently approved snow activity zone. Don’t insist on one fixed map pin.

At the Snow

Give yourself proper time for free snow play first. Then pick whichever commercial activity is operating, if any, and agree the price before you start.

Plan B and the Drive Back

If police or the Panchayat restrict Sissu access, head to Solang instead. Don’t argue with a checkpoint, and don’t wait there indefinitely hoping it reopens.

Start back towards Manali while you still have comfortable daylight, and leave earlier if the weather starts to turn.

Practical Tips Before You Leave Manali

Money and Prices

Carry some cash. Seasonal operators may not accept cards every time, and the network can drop on parts of the route.

Agree the activity price before you start the ride, not after it.

Documents and Network

Save screenshots of your vehicle documents and e-Aagman details before you reach the weak-network stretches.

Road Rules You Can’t Bend

Mountain road status can change overnight. Recheck it in the morning, even if everything looked clear the evening before.

Never stop your vehicle inside Atal Tunnel, and never ignore a police barrier. Those rules exist because of the same ice and snow you came to see.

And if you’d prefer a ready trip with Sissu already planned, take a look at our Sissu destination packages.
