Every year thousands of travellers search for snow near Manali in April and assume Rohtang Pass will be waiting at the top. The reality is different.
April is a transition month in the high Himalayas, and Rohtang Top is almost never accessible to tourists during this period because snow clearance and safety restrictions are still active.
That does not mean your trip is wasted. There are real snow experiences within reach of Manali, and with the right plan you can enjoy stunning white landscapes without depending on Rohtang Top. This guide gives you the honest picture, a clear Plan A, and a strong Plan B.
Quick Answer: Is Rohtang Pass Open in April 2026?

Rohtang Pass is usually not open for tourist vehicles in April. Snow clearance and safety restrictions keep the upper stretch closed, and authorities typically allow movement only up to a barrier at Gulaba or Marhi.
Plan your April trip around snow points like Solang Valley, Gulaba, Marhi (when permitted), Sethan village, and Sissu if the Atal Tunnel side is open.

Rohtang Pass in April 2026: The Real On Ground Situation

When people say Rohtang is "closed" in April, it does not mean the entire highway is shut. The authorities place a restriction point along the road, and tourist vehicles cannot pass that barrier. The road beyond is either still under snow, being cleared by machines, or deemed unsafe.
The BRO clears the Manali to Rohtang road in stages, starting from lower elevations and pushing upward. While they work, the district administration issues orders specifying exactly how far vehicles can travel.
A District Kullu order dated 20 April 2025 allowed vehicular traffic only up to Marhi and clearly stated no vehicular movement from Marhi to Rohtang Pass until further orders. That order also mentioned weekly maintenance closures for the Rohtang road.
This is typical of how April restrictions work. In some years the barrier sits even lower, at Gulaba.
Do not assume the same rules will repeat in 2026. The barrier location and all conditions depend on fresh orders based on current ground conditions. Always verify the latest order before you leave Manali.

How April Differs from May and June
Early April is the tightest window. Winter snowfall is still thick at higher elevations and clearance crews are often still working upward. The chances of getting past Marhi in the first half of April are usually low.
Late April brings slightly better odds. Clearance work is often more advanced and authorities may extend the permitted stretch.
But "further" still does not guarantee Rohtang Top. The pass sits above 3,900 metres and the final kilometres often remain blocked well into May.
May and June are when Rohtang typically opens for tourists, though the exact date shifts every year. If your heart is set on Rohtang Top, those months are far more realistic.
How Far Can You Go in April: Gulaba, Marhi, and Why Rohtang Top Is Different

Gulaba Area
Gulaba sits roughly 20 kilometres from Manali and often holds good snow in April. In tougher years, the barrier may be set here. Even when the barrier is further up, Gulaba is popular because snow is accessible right beside the highway.
Marhi Area
Marhi is higher and usually has deeper snow. When the district order allows travel to Marhi, this becomes the highest point tourists can reach.
The April 2025 order allowed traffic only till Marhi and restricted all movement beyond. In some years the barrier could be at Gulaba instead, and the permitted stretch can change weekly.
Rohtang Top
The actual pass has massive snow walls and panoramic Lahaul views. In April, the stretch from Marhi to the top is almost always restricted.
Even after clearance, the administration may wait for the road to stabilise before opening it. Always check the latest order.

When Will Rohtang Pass Open in 2026

There is no fixed opening date. The pass opens when BRO completes clearance and the administration confirms road safety.
This depends on winter snowfall, spring temperatures, and fresh snowfall during clearance. In most years, Rohtang opens sometime between mid May and early June.

The Safest Planning Window for Rohtang Views and Snow Walls
If you want to see Rohtang snow walls, plan for the last week of May or first two weeks of June. This gives you the highest probability of the pass being open with heavy snow still on both sides.
For families wanting less uncertainty, the second week of June is usually well established and slightly less crowded.

Best Snow Places Near Manali in April 2026: Ranked
Solang Valley

Upper Solang usually holds generous snow in April with pine forests framing white slopes. Best for families, first timers, and couples wanting activities like sledging. Roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Manali. Reach by 9 in the morning for fewer crowds.
Local tip: the ropeway to the upper meadow gives better snow access than the base area. Check if it is running.
Safety note: wear shoes with grip. Icy morning surfaces cause the most slips.
Gulaba and Kothi

Gulaba offers deeper, less commercialised snow. Kothi has a dramatic valley viewpoint. Best for couples and photographers. Roughly 40 minutes to one hour from Manali. Arrive early for clean snow and the best light.
Local tip: carry your own tea and snacks. Food options here are scarce and overpriced in April.
Safety note: watch for black ice on morning roads.
Marhi and Nearby Snow Zones (When Permitted)

When authorities allow traffic to Marhi, this becomes the highest accessible snow point in April. Snow walls along the road can be impressively tall. Roughly one to one and a half hours from Manali. Start by 8 in the morning before traffic builds.
Local tip: check the order every day. Fresh snowfall or maintenance can close the road overnight.
Safety note: altitude here is significant. Drink water and watch for breathlessness in children and elderly travellers.
Atal Tunnel Viewpoints and Nearby Snow Zones

The north portal opens into Lahaul Valley where snow cover is usually heavier. Best for travellers combining the engineering marvel with scenery. Roughly one to one and a half hours from Manali to the south portal.
Local tip: the views after exiting the north portal are stunning. Stop safely to take in the Lahaul landscape.
Safety note: never stop inside the tunnel for photos.
Sissu and Koksar (Only If Road Is Open and Safe)

Sissu often has snow with a famous partially frozen waterfall. Koksar holds snow well into spring. Roughly two to two and a half hours from Manali via the Atal Tunnel when fully open. Leave Manali by 7 in the morning.
Local tip: if a local dhaba is open, stop for a meal. Simple and good.
Safety note: carry tyre chains if available. Confirm return road status before going too far.
Sethan Snow Village

Sethan sits above Manali at around 2,700 metres with peaceful snow cover in April. Best for solitude seekers and couples. Roughly one to one and a half hours on a narrow road.
Local tip: some operators offer igloo camping here. Book in advance as weather can cancel sessions.
Safety note: narrow, slippery road. Go only with good ground clearance and an experienced driver.
Choose the Right April Snow Plan by Traveller Type

Best for families with kids: Solang Valley for easy access and activities. Gulaba as a calmer alternative.
Best for couples: Sethan for quiet beauty, or Marhi on a clear day followed by evening in Old Manali.
Best for first time snow visitors: Solang on Day 1, Gulaba on Day 2 for variety.
Best for low crowds: Sethan in the morning or Gulaba on a weekday.
Best for photography: Gulaba at dawn, or Sissu if the Atal Tunnel road is open. Lahaul light in April is extraordinary.
April Itineraries That Work with Plan A and Plan B

One Day Plan
Plan A: Drive to the highest permitted point (Marhi or Gulaba), enjoy morning snow, return via Solang for an afternoon session.
Plan B: If the Rohtang road is restricted, spend the full day at Solang Valley with the ropeway and snow activities.
Two Day Plan
Day 1: Rohtang road to the permitted barrier. Return by afternoon. Evening in Old Manali. Day 2: Sethan village or Solang Valley.
Plan B: If Day 1 road is closed, swap the days. Try the Rohtang road on Day 2 after checking the updated order.
Three Day Plan
Day 1: Rohtang road to the permitted point. Day 2: Atal Tunnel and Sissu if open. Day 3: Sethan or Solang for a relaxed finish.
Plan B: If the tunnel side is restricted on Day 2, replace with Solang and Kothi viewpoint. If the Rohtang road is also closed on Day 1, do Sethan first and retry on Day 3.
If the Atal Tunnel side is open: Drive to Sissu, spend two to three hours exploring, have lunch, and return before afternoon traffic. Check road status on both sides and keep your return window generous.
If it is restricted: Combine Gulaba with Kothi viewpoint or head to Solang. Snow quality at these points is often excellent in April.
Our Manali Solang Sissu Sethan Snow Village 6D5N package covers all these spots with built in flexibility for weather changes.
Rohtang Permit Rules Explained Simply for 2026 Travellers

When Rohtang is open for tourists, you need a permit. During closure periods, permits may not be issued at all. Here are the rules as shown on the official portal.
The daily permit limit is 800 for petrol vehicles and 400 for diesel, released in two windows. The first window opens at 10:00 with 400 petrol and 200 diesel permits. The second opens at 16:00 with the remaining 400 petrol and 200 diesel.
Weekly cap: in a week running Tuesday to Monday, only 3 permits can be obtained per vehicle.
Vehicle must not be more than 10 years old. The portal checks the registration date automatically.
Documents needed: valid ID proof, valid PUC certificate, and vehicle registration details. Do not rely on extra rules from third party websites beyond what the portal states.
Common Mistakes and Scam Prevention
Overpaying for snow clothes. Rental shops charge inflated rates. Negotiate firmly before wearing anything, or carry your own warm layers and waterproof shoes.
Starting late and getting stuck. Leave after 9:00 and you may spend more time in traffic than in snow. Start by 7:00 or 7:30.
Believing fake opening dates. Social media confidently announces dates weeks in advance. These are guesses. Trust only the permit portal and district administration.
Confusing Rohtang Top with nearby snow points. Gulaba and Marhi are not Rohtang Top. The pass is at the very top and requires the road to be fully open.
Underestimating sunburn and dehydration. Snow reflects UV intensely. Apply sunscreen, wear sunglasses, drink water regularly, especially for children.
