The OPD closing at 4:30 PM does not mean the hospital shuts. The emergency department runs all night. If it's evening and you're unsure, head for emergency, not the OPD counter.

One thing trips people up here. Emergency department hours and ordinary OPD hours are two different things. 

The OPD, where you'd see a doctor for a routine cold or stomach upset, keeps daytime hours. The emergency department, for anything serious, runs through the night.

Civil Hospital Manali is the government hospital in town, but we could not confirm from authoritative sources that its emergency department operates 24/7. If you may need late-night care, call 01902-253385 first to confirm current emergency availability.

Which Hospital Should a Tourist Go To?

We're not going to rank these hospitals, because the right choice depends on your situation, not on some list.

If it looks potentially serious, don't waste time deciding. Call 112 or 108, or go straight to a verified emergency department. Minutes matter more than picking the "better" hospital.

For a non urgent illness, a cough, mild fever, an upset stomach, a hospital OPD or a qualified doctor in Manali is usually enough.

The nearest hospital depends entirely on where you're staying. Mall Road, Old Manali, Aleo, and the outer localities each sit a different distance from each hospital. 

Rather than guess at times that could send you the wrong way, ask your hotel front desk for the closest option the moment you check in. That two minute conversation is one of the most useful things you can do on day one.

Where Can I Find a Pharmacy Near Mall Road or Old Manali?

Pharmacy opening times change, especially late at night. What a directory says today may not hold next month, so treat every timing below as a starting point and call before you rely on it.

Manali Medicos & Cosmatics is currently listed on Gompa Road, opposite the Buddhist monastery in central Manali. The listing shows hours of 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM daily and a phone number of +91 94184 82867. 

Because these details come from a business listing rather than an official pharmacy website, call ahead to confirm the latest opening hours and contact number.

Prashar Medical Store & Pet Shop is currently listed in Old Manali, with directory hours of 7:00 AM to 1:00 AM daily and a phone number of +91 93170 12009. Check the latest timings by phone before relying on late-night availability.

Now a point that confuses a lot of travellers. Lady Willingdon Hospital officially states it has a 24 hour in house pharmacy. 

But the hospital says this pharmacy stocks prescription medicines only. It does not sell ordinary over the counter items and does not fill outside prescriptions. 

So "24 hour pharmacy" here does not mean you can walk in at 2 AM for a random medical shop purchase. It means the hospital can dispense what its own doctors prescribe.

We won't recommend specific medicines. That's a job for a pharmacist or doctor who can see the patient.

What Should You Do in a Medical Emergency in Manali?

Call 112 or 108

112 is India's unified emergency number. It covers medical, police, fire and other emergencies in one call.

Himachal Pradesh also lists 108 for emergency ambulance service, and 102 as another medical or ambulance number.

112 is free and works across all of India's states and union territories. If you remember only one number from this whole article, make it 112.

Give Your Exact Location

When the dispatcher answers, give them your hotel or homestay name, your locality or road, a nearby landmark, and a callback number. Clear location details get help to you faster than anything else.

If you're outside Manali town, say clearly which route you're on, whether that's the Solang, Rohtang, Sissu, Spiti or another mountain road. On these roads, a landmark or kilometre marker matters even more.

What Should You Do If Someone Has Breathing Difficulty at Higher Altitude?

Be careful here. Breathlessness after climbing to a much higher altitude can have several causes, and it should not be self diagnosed by anyone in your group.

The CDC identifies shortness of breath, weakness and cough among the symptoms that can occur with high altitude pulmonary edema, a potentially life threatening altitude illness.

If serious altitude illness is suspected, immediate descent and professional medical attention matter most. Oxygen may be needed, but only under appropriate medical or rescue guidance.

Here's a rule worth remembering

If symptoms get worse while you stay at the same altitude, do not keep climbing higher. Going up when someone is already struggling is how a bad situation becomes an emergency.

Its official site describes a 24 hour emergency department connected with an ICU, an operating theatre, a laboratory and diagnostic imaging.

For imaging, the hospital states it has X ray, ultrasound and a 64 slice Siemens CT scanner. That CT scanner is a meaningful thing to have in a hill town, since it means serious head or internal injuries can be assessed locally rather than after a long drive down.

It also states it has a 24 hour in house prescription pharmacy, which, as we explained above, dispenses prescription medicines rather than over the counter items.

We won't promise that a particular specialist or a specific test will always be free and ready the moment you arrive. Availability changes. If a specific service matters for your case, call the hospital and ask before you go.

What Should Travellers Prepare Before Going Toward Rohtang, Sissu or Spiti?

Conditions and access on high mountain routes change fast, sometimes overnight. We won't tell you Rohtang is "currently open" or "currently closed," because by the time you read this, that could be wrong.

Official District Kullu records show that temporary Rohtang traffic regulations changed several times during 2026. The official permit system also moved away from its previous website domain during 2026, which caught out plenty of travellers relying on old links.

So check the latest District Kullu or official permit information right before you travel, not a week earlier. A saved bookmark from last month is not good enough for these roads.

Before you set off, save your emergency numbers offline, share the day's route with someone who isn't travelling with you, and avoid any rapid further climb if a member of your group starts feeling unwell.

The CDC advises people with heart or lung disease to speak with a doctor familiar with high altitude travel before heading to high elevations. If that's you or someone in your group, have that conversation at home, not at 13,000 feet.

Travel Insurance, Bills and Medical Records in Manali

Here's a detail that surprises people. Lady Willingdon Hospital states it does not provide cashless treatment through insurance companies. That means you may need to pay first and claim later.

The hospital says patients can get copies of bills, receipts and the documentation needed for reimbursement. So keep every piece of paper they give you.
