Delhi, Chandigarh or Amritsar: Where Should You Start Your Himachal Trip in 2026?

Most first time travellers book the cheapest flight they can find and only later notice the long road transfer that comes after it.
So when people ask us "Delhi, Chandigarh or Amritsar: where should you start your Himachal trip?", our answer is always another question. Where is your first hotel?
Quick Answer
Chandigarh usually makes the most sense for Shimla, Manali and the Kinnaur side.
Amritsar works better for Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj and Dalhousie, especially if you want to see the Golden Temple too.
Delhi makes sense when its wider flights or direct buses save you more time and money overall.
Your flight timings and final destination can change this answer, so compare the full journey before you book.
Which City Should You Choose for Each Himachal Destination?

Himachal looks like one block on the map. On the road, though, it behaves like several separate regions with different entry points.
The biggest mistake we see is treating "Himachal" as one destination. A family going to Shimla and a couple going to Dalhousie need completely different starting cities.
Shimla, Kufri and the Shimla Side Circuit
The Shimla district administration puts Chandigarh at 119 km from Shimla. It lists Delhi at 370 km and Amritsar at 342 km.
That gap matters a lot on day one. From Chandigarh, you reach your Shimla hotel with energy left for an evening walk.
From Delhi, the same administration gives an indicative car journey of 8 hours. That eats a full day before your holiday even starts.
In our experience, a shorter transfer makes the first day far easier, especially for families with kids or older parents.
If Shimla, Kufri and nearby stops form most of your trip, our Shimla tour packages start from this side of the state for exactly this reason.
Manali, Kullu and Nearby Valleys
Himachal Tourism's distance table puts Chandigarh to Manali at 300 km and Delhi to Manali at about 530 km.
Here is an insider detail most blogs miss: The same official page also describes the Delhi road journey as about 550 km elsewhere. Both figures come from one government page, so treat them as rough guides.
Published distances never tell you the actual drive time. Traffic, rain, landslides and diversions on the highway decide that on the day.
Still, the logic holds. Chandigarh cuts a big chunk of plains driving off your Manali trip.
If you want help building a Manali plan around this route, see our Manali tour packages.
Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj and Dalhousie
This is where Amritsar wins on geography. The Kangra district administration lists Amritsar to Dharamshala at 190 km, against 255 km from Chandigarh.
For Dalhousie, Himachal Tourism lists Amritsar at 199 km and Chandigarh at 313 km.
That makes Amritsar the natural doorway for western Himachal. You also get the Golden Temple as a bonus stop rather than a separate trip.
Our Dharamshala tour packages often pair well with an Amritsar arrival for this reason.
Kinnaur and Spiti Valley
The classic Spiti approach goes through Chandigarh, then Shimla, then up through Kinnaur.
This route climbs slowly over several days. Your body gets time to adjust to altitude, which matters a lot for first timers.
The northern connection between Manali and Kaza works differently. Snow and weather close it seasonally, so we cannot promise it is open on any given date.
Your right route for Spiti depends on your travel month, your nationality and current road conditions. Check all three before you commit.
How Far Are Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie from Each Starting City?

Let us put the official numbers side by side in plain words. Remember that these are published route distances, not live map results.
Distances to Shimla
Shimla district gives Delhi 370 km, Chandigarh 119 km and Amritsar 342 km.
Chandigarh wins clearly here. Amritsar and Delhi sit at similar distances, so neither gives you a real advantage for Shimla.
Distances to Manali
Himachal Tourism gives Chandigarh 300 km and Delhi about 530 km, with that 550 km mentioned elsewhere on the same page.
We have not confirmed an official Amritsar to Manali figure, so we will not guess one for you.
Distances to Dharamshala
Kangra district lists Chandigarh 255 km, Amritsar 190 km and Delhi 525 km.
Other publications give different Delhi figures. Treat 525 km as one official reference rather than a settled number.
Distances to Dalhousie
Himachal Tourism lists Chandigarh 313 km, Amritsar 199 km and Delhi 562 km.
The Chamba district page gives Delhi to Dalhousie as 555 km instead. Again, small differences like this are normal between sources.
Why the Numbers Never Match Your Actual Day
Every figure above starts from a city reference point. Your real trip starts at an airport, a railway station or a hotel.
Add city traffic, rain, roadwork and a lunch stop, and the published number only tells part of the story.
Our team recommends comparing the total pickup and return journey, not just the headline distance.
When Does Starting Your Himachal Trip from Delhi Make Sense?

Delhi has a huge advantage that no distance table shows. You can reach it easily from almost anywhere in India and abroad.
If you live in Bengaluru, Kolkata or overseas, a direct flight to Delhi may beat a connecting flight to Chandigarh or Amritsar.
Delhi also has established long distance road and bus links to Himachal. HRTC and other operators run services from Delhi to Himachal destinations.
For a solo traveller on a budget, an overnight bus from Delhi can save a hotel night and a full day of daytime travel.
The Overnight Bus Problem Nobody Mentions
Overnight buses suit some people and wreck others. If you sleep badly in a moving seat, you will arrive tired and cranky on day one.
The riskiest plan we see is a late flight into Delhi, a rushed transfer across the city, and then a long overnight mountain journey with no rest.
If your flight lands late, book one night near the airport or bus point. Start fresh the next day.
We do not publish bus timings or fares here because they change. Check live availability on the official HRTC booking site.
Why Is Chandigarh Often the Better Starting Point?

Chandigarh sits right at the foot of the hills. For Shimla and Manali, it simply removes hours of plains driving.
Shimla district gives an indicative Chandigarh to Shimla car journey of 3 hours 30 minutes. Treat this as an estimate, not a promise for 2026 traffic.
The district also puts Chandigarh Airport about 120 km from Shimla. That is almost the same as the city distance, which makes airport pickups simple.
Chandigarh as Your Gateway to Kinnaur
Shimla works as the road gateway for Kinnaur. The Kinnaur district administration puts Reckong Peo at 235 km from Shimla.
The same district warns about road interruptions in winter and the rainy season. Plan buffer days if you travel in either window.
If Kinnaur interests you, our Kinnaur tour packages follow this Chandigarh and Shimla approach.
Do Not Skip the Flight Comparison
Chandigarh wins on road distance. It does not automatically win on total cost.
Fewer airlines may fly your route into Chandigarh, and fares can run higher than Delhi on some dates.
Check both airports for your exact dates before you decide. The cheaper road leg only helps if the flight does not cancel out the saving.
Should You Start Your Himachal Road Trip from Amritsar?

If Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj or Dalhousie sits at the heart of your trip, Amritsar deserves serious thought.
You avoid backtracking through Chandigarh. You also start your holiday with one of the most moving places in India.
Golden Temple Plus Western Himachal
Many of our travellers combine an Amritsar day with a western Himachal loop. It feels like two holidays in one trip.
During your visit, experience the Guru Ram Das Langar, the free community kitchen at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It welcomes visitors from all backgrounds and serves simple vegetarian meals as part of the Sikh tradition of equality and selfless service.
Early morning is generally a good time to visit the Golden Temple if you prefer fewer crowds and a peaceful atmosphere.
Evenings offer beautiful views of the illuminated complex, but visitor numbers can vary, especially on weekends and religious festivals. Allow extra time when visiting with children.
City Pickup Versus Airport Pickup
Here is a detail that catches people out. Himachal Tourism lists Amritsar to Dalhousie at 199 km, measured from the city.
The Chamba district page lists about 213 km from Amritsar Airport to Dalhousie. Those are two different journeys.
When you compare quotes, always tell the operator whether pickup is at the airport, the railway station or your hotel. It changes the price and the time.
This route also works differently from a Shimla or Manali trip. You see Kangra and Chamba first, and the Shimla side may not fit at all on a short holiday.
For ideas on what to see once you arrive, read our guide to places to visit in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.
Should You Fly, Take a Train or Book an Overnight Bus?

Flying into Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar or a Himachal Airport
Delhi gives you the widest choice of flights. Chandigarh and Amritsar sit closer to the hills but may have fewer options from your city.
Himachal also has three smaller airports. Kangra/Gaggal sits about 13 km from Dharamshala, according to Kangra district.
Kullu/Bhuntar sits about 50 km from Manali, according to Himachal Tourism. Shimla/Jubbarhatti sits about 23 km from Shimla, according to Shimla district.
These airports can save you a whole day on the road. But we cannot confirm which airlines will fly these routes in October 2026.
Small mountain airports also face weather delays more often. Always keep a backup plan if your trip depends on one flight.
Taking the Train via Kalka or Pathankot
The Kalka to Shimla narrow gauge railway runs about 96 km, according to Shimla district.
It is slow, but it turns the journey itself into part of the holiday. Families with kids often love it.
For Dharamshala and Dalhousie, Pathankot works as the main railway gateway. Kangra district gives 88 km from Pathankot to Dharamshala.
Himachal Tourism gives the Pathankot railhead about 87 km from Dalhousie. Chamba district says 85 to 90 km, depending on your route.
Train timings change, so check current schedules before you plan around a specific departure.
Overnight Volvo Bus Versus Private Car
A bus costs less for one person. You get no privacy, limited luggage space and a fixed drop point.
A private car picks you up at your door and stops when you need it. That matters a lot if anyone in your group gets motion sickness on mountain bends.
For a group of four or a family, a car often makes more sense once you split the cost. For a solo backpacker, a direct bus often wins.
The real answer depends on actual quotes for your dates. Compare both before you decide.
Which Starting City Is Cheapest for a Himachal Trip?

No city wins on price every time. A shorter drive does not prove a cheaper trip.
To find the true cost, add up the whole journey from your home airport or station to your Himachal hotel, and back again.
What to Add to Your Total
Start with your flight or train ticket to the gateway city. Then add the transfer from the airport or station to your pickup point.
Add the road transport into Himachal, the state entry toll, national highway tolls and parking.
If you hire a car with a driver, ask about driver night charges and food. Some operators include these, some do not.
Finally, add the return journey. Many people forget that the drive back costs as much time and money as the drive in.
Hidden Costs That Change the Answer
A one way drop, where the car leaves you in a different city, often carries an extra charge.
A late arrival may force an extra hotel night near the airport. A missed connection can cost you a whole day.
Here is a money saving tip we share often: If you are a small group, ask for a quote that includes the return journey from the start. Two separate one way bookings often cost more than one round trip plan.
We have not listed fares here because airfares, bus fares and cab rates change constantly. Any number we printed would mislead you.
What Himachal Itinerary Works Best from Each Starting City?

The plans below are sample frameworks to help you think. They are not fixed timetables, and road conditions can change any of them.
Short Shimla Trip from Chandigarh
A four or five day trip works well here. Arrive in Chandigarh and drive up to Shimla the same day.
Keep the first evening light. A walk on the Mall and an early dinner is plenty after a travel day.
Spend the next day or two on Shimla and nearby stops like Kufri, at your own pace. Keep the last day as a return buffer to Chandigarh.
This plan suits families and first timers who want hills without long drives.
Manali and Jibhi Circuit from Chandigarh
For six or seven days, pick two bases at most. Manali plus one quieter valley works far better than four hotels in four towns.
Jibhi or Tirthan makes a good pair with Manali. You get busy town energy and then slow village days.
The common trap here is adding Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala into one short trip. On paper it looks efficient. In reality, you spend most of the holiday inside the vehicle.
If a quieter valley appeals to you, take a look at our Jibhi and Tirthan Valley packages.
Golden Temple, Dharamshala and Dalhousie from Amritsar
Six or seven days fits this loop comfortably. Spend your first evening and next morning at the Golden Temple.
Then head up to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj for two or three nights. Finish with Dalhousie before returning to Amritsar or Pathankot.
Keep sightseeing loose. Hill traffic and weather decide how much you actually see in a day.
Shimla, Kinnaur and Spiti from Chandigarh
This needs eight to ten days and works only when roads and your pace allow it.
You climb from Chandigarh to Shimla, then through Kinnaur towards Spiti. Each stop gives your body time to adjust to altitude.
Build in at least one or two buffer days for weather or road blocks. Spiti roads do not follow calendars.
Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for certain border areas on the Shimla and Kinnaur route. Check this well before you travel.
We cannot promise that every high altitude road will stay open on your dates. Our Spiti Valley tour packages include buffer days for exactly this reason.
Should You Return from the Same City or Use a Different Airport?
You do not have to fly in and out of the same city. Many travellers arrive at one gateway and leave from another.
Picture a western Himachal loop that starts in Amritsar, moves through Dharamshala, and ends towards the Chandigarh side. You never drive the same road twice.
This kind of open jaw ticket saves you backtracking. It can also add a one way drop charge for the car, or a higher fare on one leg.
What we tell our travellers is simple. Price both versions, the round trip and the open jaw, before you buy any flight. The cheaper one is not always the one you expect.
What Changed for Himachal Road Trips in 2026?

The Himachal Entry Toll
Himachal charges an entry toll on out of state vehicles. The original published policy amount for light passenger vehicles was ₹130.
In April 2026, the state government announced a reduced ₹100 entry toll for out of state light passenger vehicles, according to news reports.
Some older official pages still show ₹130. Check the revised government notification before you rely on either figure.
This entry toll is separate from national highway tolls, Rohtang charges or your taxi operator's own fees. If a driver or middleman bundles these together, ask for a breakdown.
New Tunnels on the Manali Highway
The Deod and Hanogi tunnels opened on 11 September 2026 on the Pandoh to Takoli stretch of NH 3.
The Deod tunnel measures 2.8 km and the Hanogi tunnel 650 metres, according to a report at the time of opening.
The Deod and Hanogi tunnels initially opened with one tube each available for traffic. Traffic arrangements may change as construction and related highway work progress, so check the latest NH 3 updates before travelling.
The tunnels can improve connectivity, but actual journey times still depend on traffic, weather and road conditions.
The tunnels should help the Mandi to Kullu stretch. We will not promise a fixed time saving on the full Manali drive.
Rohtang Permits Are a Separate Thing
General Himachal access and Rohtang sightseeing need different permissions. Many travellers mix them up.
The official Rohtang portal lists a ₹500 permit fee and a ₹50 congestion charge for cars, jeeps and MUVs. Buses and heavy vehicles pay a ₹100 congestion charge.
The portal also lists daily limits of 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles. Rohtang Pass permit fees, daily vehicle quotas and road access are subject to official regulations and weather conditions.
Before planning your visit, check the latest charges, permit availability and road opening status on the official Rohtang permit portal. A valid permit does not guarantee access if the pass is closed for safety reasons.
Here is a serious warning. Get Rohtang permits only through the official portal or your registered operator. If anyone demands far more than these official figures for "permit help", walk away.
Permits for Spiti
Indian citizens do not need a general permit to enter Spiti Valley, according to Himachal Tourism.
Foreign visitors need an Inner Line Permit for certain border restricted areas on the Shimla and Kinnaur route.
Do Not Trust Old Road Status Pages
This is one of the most useful insider tips in this article. The Lahaul and Spiti district road status page shows a last updated date of 14 May 2024.
Its open and closed labels cannot tell you what the roads look like in October 2026.
For Kunzum Pass, Rohtang, Chandratal or the Manali to Kaza road, ask current district advisories and local transport operators directly.
What Mistakes Should First Time Himachal Travellers Avoid?
Booking the Cheapest Flight Without the Road Cost
A cheap Delhi fare can turn expensive once you add a long road transfer, an extra night and tolls.
Always compare the full trip cost, door to door, before you book.
Cramming Too Many Places into a Short Trip
Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie sit far apart. Seeing all four in a week means living in the car.
Pick one region and enjoy it properly. You can always come back for the other side.
Driving After Dark on Unfamiliar Mountain Roads
This is our most important timing tip. Choose a flight or train that gets you to your pickup point by midday, so your drive into the hills finishes in daylight.
Night driving on unfamiliar mountain roads adds real risk. Fog, sharp bends and trucks feel very different after sunset.
Ignoring Comfort for Family and Older Travellers
Older parents, small kids and anyone prone to motion sickness need more breaks. Plan a shorter first day for them.
A shorter transfer from Chandigarh or Amritsar often makes the whole trip calmer for these groups.
Skipping the Buffer Day
Rain, landslides and road work can hold you up for hours. One spare day protects your return flight.
Losing a buffer day costs far less than missing a flight home.
So, Where Should You Start Your Himachal Trip?
There is no single best starting city. The right answer depends on where you want to go.
Chandigarh works as the practical default for many Shimla, Manali and Kinnaur routes. It cuts plains driving and gets you into the hills faster.
Amritsar makes the most sense when your holiday centres on Dharamshala, Dalhousie and the Golden Temple.
Delhi can still be the smarter total journey when its flights or direct buses suit you better than the closer cities.
For a longer trip across regions, consider arriving in one city and leaving from another. It often saves you from driving the same road twice.
Sometimes the easiest way to choose a starting city is to look at the full itinerary first. Our Himachal Tour Packages can give you a better idea of possible routes, and our team is available on WhatsApp if you need help deciding.
