Yulla Kanda vs Bhrigu Lake Trek 2026: Which Suits Your Time and Fitness?

Kinnaur18 minutes read
Yulla Kanda vs Bhrigu Lake Trek

If you already stay in Manali, Bhrigu Lake usually makes more sense. If you start from Shimla or want to explore Kinnaur, Yulla Kanda fits better.

That is the short answer to the Yulla Kanda vs Bhrigu Lake Trek question. Neither trek suits a rushed plan or an unprepared body.

Quick Answer

Pick Bhrigu Lake if you are in Manali, have four days, and want a higher alpine lake with wide grassland views.

Pick Yulla Kanda if you are near Shimla or Kinnaur and want a sacred lake, a Krishna shrine and a village start.

Bhrigu reaches about 4,270 to 4,300 metres. Most sources put the Yulla Kanda lake and temple around 3,895 metres.

Both treks involve long uphill walking. Do not rush either one.

Yulla Kanda vs Bhrigu Lake: What Are the Real Differences?

Yulla Kanda vs Bhrigu Lake: What Are the Real Differences?

Here is what most people get wrong. They compare the total kilometres or the "EASY" label on the government website, and then they pick the trek that looks shorter.

The better question is this: how hard is the toughest walking day, and how fast do you climb to altitude? That decides how your legs and lungs feel.

Yulla Kanda sits in the Rora Valley of Kinnaur district. You start walking from Yulla Khas, a village you reach from the Tapri side.

The trail climbs through forest and meadow to a lake with a small Krishna shrine beside it. The experience feels cultural and spiritual as much as scenic.

Bhrigu Lake lies in Kullu district above Manali, east of Rohtang Pass. Most organised groups start from Gulaba on the Manali to Rohtang road.

The Bhrigu trail is famous for its open alpine grasslands. You walk through wide meadows before reaching a high, cold lake.

On distance, Travel Coffee describes the Yulla route as about 12 km one way, so about 24 km of walking up and back. Operators run Bhrigu as a four day trek covering about 21.5 to 22 km in total.

Those totals look similar, but they hide the real story. Yulla packs a big climb into one main ascent day. Bhrigu spreads its walking over four days but takes you higher.

Also, both treks carry an EASY grade on the Himachal government trekking portal. Experienced operators call both of them moderate. We side with the operators, and we explain why further down.

Where Do These Treks Start and How Do You Reach Them?

Where Do These Treks Start and How Do You Reach Them?

Reaching Yulla Khas in Kinnaur

The usual road runs from Shimla to Narkanda, down to Rampur, on to Tapri, and then up to Yulla Khas.

This is a long mountain drive on NH-05, a road that landslides regularly disrupt. The District Kinnaur website published traffic restrictions near Nathpa and Nigulsari during August and September 2026.

Those notices tell you the road has a history of closures. They do not tell you the road status on your trekking date.

When we plan a Kinnaur trek, the first thing we check is NH-05, not the trail. In our experience planning Himachal trips, road conditions matter just as much as the trail.

Insider tip: check the road the evening before you leave Shimla and again at dawn. A two hour wait near a landslide can push your arrival at Yulla Khas into the dark.

If you want to combine the trek with more of the valley, our Kinnaur tour packages show what else fits along this route.

Reaching Gulaba from Manali

Bhrigu Lake groups drive from Manali up the Rohtang road to Gulaba and start walking from there.

Some give the Manali to Gulaba distance as 24 km. The government trekking record mentions 27 km. Treat the exact figure as variable.

If you already stay in Manali, this logistics part is simple. You sleep in town, take a short drive, and start walking the same morning.

Compare that with Yulla Kanda from Shimla, where a full day of road travel comes before any walking at all. For a Manali based traveller, that difference alone often settles the choice.

If you still need a base in town, our Manali tour packages cover stays and transport. Please note these are sightseeing packages, not a dedicated Bhrigu Lake trek.

How Many Days Do You Need From Delhi, Shimla or Manali?

How Many Days Do You Need From Delhi, Shimla or Manali?

Yulla Kanda's three-day Shimla itinerary

Travel Coffee runs Yulla Kanda as a three day, two night trip from Shimla.

On day one, you drive from Shimla into Kinnaur and sleep at a village homestay in Yulla Khas.

The best meal of the trip often happens right here. Have a hot dinner and evening chai at the Yulla Khas homestay, and eat properly, because the next day asks a lot of you.

On day two, you make the main ascent, visit the lake and temple as planned, and sleep at an alpine camp.

On day three, you descend and travel back towards Shimla.

This is a compact plan. We tell every group upfront that the lake visit depends on fitness, weather and a safe turnaround decision. Some groups turn back before the temple, and that is the right call when conditions demand it.

Other operators may spread the same walking over more days. Ours is one option, not the only one. You can read the day by day detail in our Yulla Kanda trek itinerary.

Bhrigu Lake's four-day Manali itinerary

Day one goes from Manali to Gulaba, then you walk about 1.5 km to Jonker Thatch in roughly 1.5 hours.

Day two takes you from Jonker Thatch to Rola Kholi, about 5 km in 3 to 4 hours.

Day three is the big one. You walk from Rola Kholi to Bhrigu Lake and back, about 10 km, and the itinerary allows around 7 to 8 hours.

Day four brings you down from Rola Kholi to Gulaba, about 5 km in 3 to 4 hours, and then back to Manali.

These timings come from one operator and assume reasonably prepared trekkers. Some operators sell three day versions. The government listing uses four days.

How Delhi travel changes the calculation

Starting from Delhi changes everything. Travel Coffee's Delhi to Delhi Yulla Kanda trip runs five days and four nights, and two of those nights go into overnight bus journeys.

Overnight buses eat sleep and energy. You arrive in the mountains already tired, which makes a hard ascent feel harder.

The same logic applies to Bhrigu. A four day trek from Manali does not include your journey from Delhi to Manali. Add that time yourself before you apply for leave.

If you want a Shimla base before heading into Kinnaur, our Shimla tour packages can help you add a rest night on arrival.

Which Trek Is Harder on Your Legs and Lungs?

Which Trek Is Harder on Your Legs and Lungs?

Trekking distance and hardest walking day

This is the heart of the Yulla Kanda vs Bhrigu Lake Trek comparison.

Yulla Kanda asks you to cover about 12 km one way, mostly uphill, with a demanding main ascent day. Another operator describes around 10 km from Yulla Khas to its base camp in 4 to 6 hours, and then a separate upper section to the lake.

Those two figures measure different stretches, so they do not contradict each other. Either way, you face sustained climbing for many hours.

Bhrigu's hardest day is the 10 km round trip from Rola Kholi to the lake. That day starts from a high camp, so the air is already thin before you begin.

Do not confuse that 10 km day with the full Bhrigu route. The four day total sits around 21.5 to 22 km.

Altitude and breathing difficulty

Bhrigu Lake reaches higher. about 14,009 feet, and the state government lists 4,300 metres.

Most sources put the Yulla Kanda lake and temple near 3,895 metres. The government Yulla Trek entry shows 4,114 metres, but it does not say that figure marks the temple or the lake.

Higher does not automatically mean riskier for you. Your risk also depends on where you sleep, how fast you climb, how well you acclimatise, and your own body.

The CDC Yellow Book 2026 says unacclimatised travellers may develop altitude illness once they sleep at about 2,450 metres or higher. Both treks take you well above that.

Fitness helps you handle effort. It does not stop altitude sickness. We see strong runners struggle at altitude while slower walkers feel fine.

Steep sections and downhill strain

Both trails mix forest paths, meadow climbs and steeper upper sections. On Yulla Kanda, the upper climb towards the lake feels the toughest.

Neither route counts as technical mountaineering in normal conditions. Snow, bad weather and poor visibility can change that quickly.

People forget the descent. Walking downhill for hours on tired legs hammers your knees and thighs. Many trekkers find the way down harder than the way up.

That is why a trek that looks short on a map can still leave you sore for days. Our Yulla Kanda trek difficulty guide breaks down each section in more detail.

Can Beginners Attempt Yulla Kanda or Bhrigu Lake?

Can Beginners Attempt Yulla Kanda or Bhrigu Lake?

What fitness should you have before booking?

Yes, prepared beginners can attempt both treks in suitable conditions. The key word is prepared.

Operators set a benchmark for Bhrigu Lake: you should walk, jog or run 5 km in under 35 minutes. That is their programme target, not a government rule.

Hitting that target shows your legs and heart can handle steady work. It tells you nothing about how your body will react to thin air.

If you cannot manage 5 km without stopping today, give yourself more weeks before booking. Do not book first and hope your fitness catches up.

How to prepare over several weeks

Start with brisk walking most days and stretch the distance gradually. Add hills or flyovers wherever you can find them.

Stairs help more than almost anything else. Climb them steadily, then walk down slowly to train your knees for the descent.

Add squats, lunges and step ups two or three times a week. Strong thighs protect your knees on the way down.

Operators suggest Yulla Kanda beginners build up to continuous walks of about 5 to 7 km. That gives you a useful target.

Once you feel comfortable, do a few longer hill walks carrying a loaded backpack. Your shoulders and back need practice too.

If you start from a desk job and no exercise, plan for longer preparation. A few days of training will not make anyone ready for a high altitude trek.

If you have heart, lung or other significant medical concerns, speak to a qualified doctor before you book either trek.

What Will You Actually See on Each Trail?

Yulla Kanda's lake, temple and Kinnauri setting

Yulla Kanda's lake, temple and Kinnauri setting

You start in Yulla Khas, a working Kinnauri village. You walk through forest, then out into meadows, and finally up to a lake with a small Krishna shrine on its edge.

For many local families, this place holds deep religious meaning. Please treat the shrine with respect, keep your voice down, and follow local customs.

Popular accounts and local tradition describe it as the world's highest Krishna temple. No independent body has certified that record in our research, so treat it as a belief, not a measured fact.

Bhrigu Lake's grasslands and mountain views

Bhrigu Lake's grasslands and mountain views

Bhrigu's big draw is the open grassland around Jonker Thatch and Rola Kholi. You walk through wide meadows with Himalayan peaks around you.

The lake sits above these meadows in a cold, rocky bowl. Local religious tradition links the lake to Maharishi Bhrigu.

Which trail looks better? Honestly, that depends on you. Bhrigu gives you big open views. Yulla gives you village life, forest and a sacred lake. Both reward you differently.

Which Trek Has Better Weather in 2026?

Which Trek Has Better Weather in 2026?

May and June

Yulla Kanda's first trekking window runs through May and June, when local conditions allow.

Leftover snow can cover the upper trail early in the season. That makes footing slower and the climb more tiring.

Do not expect a guaranteed snow experience or a fully clear lake. The government Yulla listing shows dates of 22 to 24 June 2026, but that does not prove the trek opened for only three days.

July and August

Operators run Bhrigu Lake through summer and some monsoon weeks. The meadows turn green and look their best between July and September.

The monsoon also brings rain, cloud, slippery trails and road disruptions. You might walk for hours without a clear view.

For Yulla Kanda, monsoon rain affects the Kinnaur approach more than the trail. Landslides on NH-05 can delay or cancel your drive in.

September, October and late-season departures

Many trekkers prefer autumn because the sky clears and visibility improves. Nights get much colder, and early snow becomes possible.

Yulla Kanda's second window runs through September and October. Travel Coffee currently advertises group departures on 16 to 20 October, 23 to 27 October, 30 October to 3 November and 6 to 10 November 2026.

These are advertised dates only. Each one runs only if fresh local checks confirm the trail, snow, road and campsite are suitable.

Our timing tip: before paying for any late season departure, ask for a road and trail update from someone on the ground that same week. Conditions in late October can change overnight.

How Much Does Each Trek Cost in 2026?

How Much Does Each Trek Cost in 2026?

Yulla Kanda package prices

Travel Coffee's published Yulla Kanda group package starts at ₹6,499 per person from Shimla on triple sharing.

From Delhi or Chandigarh, the triple sharing price starts at ₹7,499 per person.

Double sharing costs ₹7,999 per person from Shimla and ₹8,999 from Delhi or Chandigarh.

Here is a simple money saving tip: Triple sharing from Shimla saves you ₹1,500 per person compared with double sharing. If you are already in Shimla, joining there saves another ₹1,000 compared with the Delhi option.

The package covers one village homestay night, one alpine camp night, two breakfasts, two dinners, the listed transport and trip coordination.

It does not cover lunches, snacks, bottled water, optional porter or mule services, or travel insurance.

These are published prices as of October 2026. Always confirm availability, final price and inclusions in writing before you pay. Our Yulla Kanda trek cost guide explains each line item.

Bhrigu Lake trekking costs

Operators show a base trek fee of ₹8,450 per person plus 5% GST for Bhrigu Lake.

They also list a ₹120 trek insurance charge. Their Manali to Gulaba group transfer costs ₹1,800 plus applicable GST, and you book it separately.

These are one operator's prices, and they can change. Other Bhrigu organisers charge different amounts. Travel Coffee has not published a Bhrigu Lake trek price.

You cannot compare the fee directly with our Yulla package. The joining points, transport and inclusions differ.

Which expenses do travellers forget?

Your real budget starts at your front door. Add your travel from home to Shimla or Manali, plus any hotel nights before and after.

Then add lunches and snacks on the trail, gear you need to buy or rent, insurance, and any porter or mule support.

Itinerary changes cost money too. A landslide delay can mean an extra night somewhere.

What we tell our travellers is simple: compare the written inclusions, not the headline price. A cheaper package that skips transport or meals often ends up costing more.

Do You Need Permits or a Local Guide?

Do You Need Permits or a Local Guide?

Yulla Kanda registration and camping rules

Himachal Pradesh runs an online Trekking Management System. You or your agency can use it to tell the authorities about your trek plan.

The state tourism department advises trekkers to inform local authorities and to use registered guides and agencies.

Yulla Kanda sits in Lower Kinnaur. District Kinnaur publishes separate permit rules for notified border areas, especially in Pooh block.

The published Inner Line Permit fee for those notified areas is ₹200 per person at the e-Governance Centre. That is not a Yulla Kanda entry fee.

Foreign nationals must check rules against their nationality and full itinerary.

Our research found no confirmed forest charge or camping fee for Yulla Kanda. We also found no rule making a local guide legally compulsory for every visitor.

Even so, our team recommends camping only at locally authorised spots and walking with a knowledgeable guide, especially on your first visit.

Bhrigu Lake and the Rohtang vehicle permit confusion

This one confuses a lot of people, and some will try to use that confusion against you.

The official Rohtang permit portal lists a ₹500 tourism vehicle permit for cars, jeeps and MUVs visiting Rohtang Pass.

A separate ₹50 congestion charge applies to light motor vehicles crossing Gulaba Bridge.

Warning: if anyone tells you every Bhrigu trekker must pay a ₹550 personal permit, question it. Those two charges apply to vehicles in specific situations, not automatically to you as a hiker.

So skip buying a Rohtang tourism permit if your drive stops at Gulaba. Confirm the actual vehicle rules with your transfer provider or the local authority before you pay anything.

How Do You Manage Altitude Sickness and Trail Safety?

How Do You Manage Altitude Sickness and Trail Safety?

Recognising altitude sickness

Watch for headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness and loss of appetite after you climb. These are common signs of acute mountain sickness.

Climbing fast to a higher sleeping spot raises your risk. That is why gradual acclimatisation beats rushing.

The CDC advises that anyone with suspected altitude illness should not go higher until symptoms clear. Do not push on just because your group wants to.

Do not take altitude medication on your own. Speak to a qualified doctor before your trip if you want to discuss it.

Turning back safely

Tell your trek leader the moment you feel unwell. Do not hide symptoms to avoid slowing the group.

If symptoms worsen, or someone shows confusion, poor balance or serious breathlessness, act urgently. Descend where possible and get medical help.

Turn back when weather turns bad or the trail becomes unsafe. The lake will still be there next season.

The mobile network on both trails is weak or absent. Download offline maps and tell the family your plan before you lose signal.

Do not assume oxygen, a rescue team or a helicopter will reach you quickly at either campsite. Plan as if help is far away.

Our team recommends keeping a buffer day for every trek. It gives you room to rest, wait out the weather or descend without panic.

Which Trek Suits Your Available Leave Days?

Which Trek Suits Your Available Leave Days?

If you have only two days

Honestly, neither trek makes sense as a standard plan for an unprepared visitor leaving from Delhi.

Some experienced trekkers run compressed versions. For a first timer, squeezing a high altitude trek into two days is a bad idea. Add days or choose a gentler destination.

If you have three or four days

Bhrigu fits well if you are already in Manali. Operators run three and four day plans, and the four day version gives your body more time.

Yulla Kanda fits our three day Shimla itinerary. Remember that this plan includes long road travel and one hard walking day.

The right choice depends on where you already are, not just the number of days printed on a package.

If you have five days or more

From Delhi, our five day Yulla Kanda trip covers travel both ways, including two overnight bus journeys.

More days give you more flexibility. You can rest after the bus ride, handle a road delay, or walk at a relaxed pace.

Extra time is never wasted on a mountain trip. It often decides whether you reach the lake happy or exhausted.

What Should You Pack for Either Trek?

What Should You Pack for Either Trek?

Start with proper trekking shoes that have a strong grip. Running shoes struggle on wet grass and loose ground.

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, and carry warm layers for evenings and early mornings. High camps get cold after sunset.

Pack waterproof protection for rain, plus a headlamp for camp after dark.

Carry a daypack with your water arrangement, snacks, personal medicines, ID proof and sun and weather protection.

If the trail has snow, ask your operator what extra equipment the route needs that week. Choose gear based on real conditions, not a generic list.

Final Verdict: Which Trek Should You Book?

So, Yulla Kanda vs Bhrigu Lake Trek: which one wins?

If you are in Manali and want a higher alpine lake with wide meadows, book Bhrigu Lake with a properly paced four day plan.

If you are near Shimla or Kinnaur and want a sacred lake, village life and a different Himalayan route, book Yulla Kanda.

If you are an unprepared beginner, short on leave, or worried about fast altitude gain, wait. Train for a few more weeks, add acclimatisation days, or start with a gentler trek.

If Yulla Kanda fits you, our Yulla Kanda trek group package shows current departures, inclusions and prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Yulla Kanda easier than Bhrigu Lake?

Not automatically. Yulla Kanda packs long, sustained uphill walking into one main day. Bhrigu takes you higher but spreads the walking over more days. The itinerary you choose decides how hard each trek feels.

Which trek is better for complete beginners?

Both need real preparation. A beginner does better on a sensibly paced, guided trip with acclimatisation time. If you are in Manali, a four day Bhrigu plan gives you more breathing room than a compressed schedule.

What is the maximum altitude of each trek?

Bhrigu Lake reaches about 4,270 to 4,300 metres. Most sources place the Yulla Kanda lake and temple near 3,895 metres. The government Yulla Trek entry shows 4,114 metres, but it may describe a different point.

How much walking is involved in Yulla Kanda?

Travel Coffee describes the route from Yulla Khas to the lake as about 12 km one way, so around 24 km up and back. The exact distance changes with the route and the starting roadhead.

How many kilometres is the Bhrigu Lake trek?

The four day itinerary covers about 21.5 to 22 km in total. The hardest day, from Rola Kholi to the lake and back, covers about 10 km of that.

Can I finish either trek in two days?

Some experienced trekkers use compressed plans. We do not recommend two day versions for beginners or anyone unused to altitude. Rushing raises your altitude sickness risk and leaves no buffer for bad weather.

Which trek is better for a three-day holiday?

If you are in Manali, a three day Bhrigu plan from an established operator can work. If you are in Shimla, our three day Yulla Kanda itinerary fits, though it includes long road travel and a demanding ascent day.

Which trek is cheaper in 2026?

Our Yulla Kanda package starts at ₹6,499 from Shimla on triple sharing. Operators list Bhrigu at ₹8,450 plus GST, with transport extra. The inclusions differ, so compare written details, not headline prices.

Do I need a permit for Yulla Kanda or Bhrigu Lake?

Register your trek through the state Trekking Management System. Yulla Kanda sits outside the notified Pooh block permit areas. Rohtang vehicle permits apply to vehicles, not automatically to Bhrigu hikers. Confirm current camping rules locally.

Can I trek alone without a guide?

Only if you have strong navigation skills, weather judgement and a solid safety plan. The network stays weak on both trails, and rescue may take time. For most first timers, a knowledgeable local guide makes the trek safer.

Is June or September better for these treks?

June can bring leftover snow on upper trails, which slows you down. September usually gives clearer views but colder nights and possible early snow. Actual conditions in your travel week matter more than the month name.

Which trek should I avoid if I am not used to high altitudes?

Both treks reach heights where altitude illness can happen. Neither one counts as the "safe" choice. Your pace, sleeping altitude and acclimatisation matter far more, so pick a slow itinerary and include a buffer day.
