Yulla Kanda Trek Distance and Route 2026: Yulla Khas to the Lake

Kinnaur16 minutes read
Yulla Kanda Trek Distance and Route

If you searched for the Yulla Kanda trek distance and route, you probably found three or four numbers, and none of them agree. That confusion is the real problem with planning this trek.

Here is where most people go wrong. They read "12 km" and assume that covers the whole trip, up and back. It doesn't.

In our experience, that one mix up causes more late, cold, rushed descents than anything else. So we'll sort out the distance first, then walk you through the trail stage by stage.

Quick Answer

The Yulla Kanda trek starts at Yulla Khas village in Kinnaur. Travel Coffee's published route estimates about 12 km one way to Yulla Kanda Lake.

That figure is a route estimate, not a verified GPS measurement, and it is not a 12 km round trip. Expect village stairs and orchards, a long forest stretch, open alpine meadows, and a steep final climb at high altitude.

Completion time depends on your fitness, your campsite, the weather and trail conditions, so nobody can honestly promise you a fixed number of hours.

How Far Is Yulla Kanda Lake from Yulla Khas?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (8).jpg

The honest answer: about 12 km one way, according to our published route. An Outlook Traveller trek account also describes a walk of roughly 12 km.

We have not found a reliable GPS track covering the entire trail, so treat the 12 km one way distance as an approximate estimate rather than an exact measurement.

The actual distance may vary depending on your starting point, the trail you follow and your campsite location.

One Way Distance Versus Round Trip Distance

The Yulla Kanda trek distance doubles once you add the walk back. About 12 km up plus about 12 km down gives you roughly 24 km in total on the same path.

That 24 km is simple arithmetic based on a route estimate. Your real number will shift with where your vehicle drops you and which campsite you use.

If your driver stops lower down the village road, you walk more. If you camp higher on the trail, your lake day gets shorter but your first day gets longer.

Why Do Different Websites Show Different Distances?

You will see at least three totals online. Our route says about 12 km one way. One operator lists 18 km total. Another mentions 12 to 14 km round trip.

These figures can't all describe the same measured trail. Some writers count from a different roadhead. Some count only to a campsite. Some mix up one way and return.

Meanwhile, one October 2026 trekker reached their camp after only 2 to 3 km. That points to a completely different campsite, not a shorter trail.

So when someone quotes you a number, ask one question first: "Distance to where?" The camp and the lake are not the same finish line.

Where Does the Yulla Kanda Trek Start?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (10).jpg

The trek starts at Yulla Khas, which some people simply call Yulla village. It sits in the Rora Valley, in Nichar tehsil of Kinnaur district.

You reach it on the road through Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur and Tapri, and then take the final mountain road up to the village.

Here is an insider tip most guides skip

Before you calculate anything, confirm exactly where your vehicle will stop. Ask your driver or homestay host directly.

Published heights for the village also conflict, anywhere from 2,400 m to 3,300 m. That gap is huge, so we won't pretend to know your exact elevation gain.

What Is the Yulla Khas to Yulla Kanda Lake Route?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (9).jpg

This is the part that matters most. The Yulla Kanda trek route moves through five broad stages, from village lanes to a high lake. We are describing the character of each stage, not a kilometre by kilometre map.

Stage 1: Yulla Khas Village and Apple Orchards

You start the morning on village paths and stone stairs that wind past homes and apple orchards. It looks gentle on paper. It isn't.

The climbing starts almost from your first step. Stairs at altitude tire your legs quickly, especially if you arrived the night before from the plains.

Our favourite small ritual here: eat a proper hot breakfast and drink a cup of chai at your Yulla Khas homestay before leaving. You won't find reliable food stops higher up.

What we tell our travellers is simple. Walk the village section slowly, even if you feel fresh. Burning energy on the stairs costs you later on the steep upper climb.

Stage 2: Forest Trail and Camping Areas

Past the orchards, the trail enters forest. The gradient keeps changing, with steady uphill stretches broken by easier sections.

Some trekkers spend a night at temporary camps along this part of the trail. These camps sit at different points, so nobody can give you one universal distance to "the campsite."

Fill up and carry your own drinking water here. Trekkers report water along the trail only intermittently, and nobody has confirmed a reliable refill point.

Don't count on a camp having water, food or shelter until someone confirms it for your dates. Temporary camps change from season to season.

Stage 3: Forest Gate and Alpine Meadows

A recent trekker described passing a gate near the point where the forest opens out into alpine meadows. That is a firsthand account, not a surveyed landmark.

The views open up dramatically here. You see wide slopes and sky, and it suddenly feels like the lake must be just ahead.

This is our second insider warning. The open meadow tricks your brain. The same trekker described several steep uphill sections still waiting beyond the gate.

Don't spend all your energy celebrating the views. Keep your pace steady and keep drinking water.

Stage 4: Final Climb to Yulla Kanda Lake

The last stretch is steep, and the altitude makes it harder. The lake and shrine sit at about 3,895 m (12,778 ft).

At this height, your breathing gets heavier and your steps get shorter. That is normal. Take short, regular rest breaks rather than one long collapse.

Wet ground, wind or cloud can slow you down badly here. If the weather turns, your pace drops and your safe turnaround time moves earlier.

Then you crest the final slope and reach the lake and the small Krishna temple beside it. Most people go quiet for a minute. Give yourself that time before thinking about the descent.

Stage 5: The Descent Towards Yulla Khas

Many trekkers treat the descent as the easy half. On steep or wet ground, it can feel harder than the climb, mainly on your knees and ankles.

Plan to finish the difficult sections in daylight. Carry a proper headlamp as backup, not your phone torch.

One thing we strongly suggest you skip: rushing down to catch a bus. Tired legs plus hurry on a slippery slope is how most trek injuries happen. Plan transport around the trek, not the other way round.

How Long Does the Yulla Kanda Trek Take?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (12).jpg

One operator estimates 4 to 6 hours from Yulla Khas to its base camp. That covers only the walk to its camp, not the full lake trek.

The final section to the lake and the long descent take extra time on top of that. If your camp sits lower, your lake day gets longer. If it sits higher, your first day does.

We don't give a single universal timetable, because an honest one doesn't exist for this trail. Fitness, group size, weather and rest breaks all change it.

The most useful timing tip we can give

Leave the village as soon as it gets light. An early start keeps the steep upper climb and the descent inside daylight hours.

Also agree on a turnaround time with your group before you start. If you haven't reached the lake by then, you turn back. The lake will still be there next season.

Is the Yulla Kanda Trek Difficult for Beginners?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (7).jpg

Most sources call this trek moderate. That label fits fit, experienced hikers. For a beginner, the long ascent and the high altitude can make it genuinely demanding.

Labels like "easy" or "moderate" hide the real questions. Have you walked uphill for hours before? Have you spent time at altitude? Did you give your body a night to adjust?

Beginners can do it with the right plan. In our experience, the beginners who enjoy it most take a slower itinerary with a camp night, rather than attempting everything in one push.

Consider extra help, like a guide or porter, if you're new to trekking, travelling with older family members, or carrying heavy camping gear.

Can You Complete Yulla Kanda in One Day or Should You Camp?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (13).jpg

Is a Single Day Ascent and Descent Realistic?

With roughly 24 km of walking and a steep, high finish, a single day push suits only strong, experienced trekkers. Even then, daylight sets a hard limit.

We can't promise every trekker will reach the lake and return in one day. Many people underestimate the descent and finish in the dark.

If you try it, set a strict turnaround point and stick to it. Reaching the lake doesn't count as success if you then come down exhausted at night.

A Slower Village, Camp and Lake Itinerary

A more relaxed plan looks like this. You arrive in Yulla Khas and sleep in the village. The next day you walk up to a camp and sleep there.

The following morning you climb to the lake, spend time there, and descend. This structure gives your body time to adjust and keeps each day shorter.

This is an illustrative planning structure, not our fixed package itinerary. Your exact days depend on your transport and where camps operate.

How Does Travel Coffee's Group Itinerary Work?

Our published Delhi option runs for 5 days and 4 nights, including the overnight transport journeys.

It includes one night at a Yulla Khas village homestay, then a trek day to the campsite and, if conditions allow, the lake, followed by a later descent.

The lake visit and the safe turnaround always depend on the trek team, the group's pace and the weather. You can see the full details on our Yulla Kanda trek and camping package page.

How Do You Reach Yulla Khas from Shimla, Delhi or Chandigarh?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (6).jpg

From Shimla, Delhi or Chandigarh, you drive towards Kinnaur through Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur and Tapri, then climb the final road to Yulla Khas.

Most groups use private road transport. Some travellers take a bus towards Tapri and arrange local transport from there.

We won't quote bus timings or fares, because they change and we haven't confirmed current ones. Check them locally before you travel.

The road from Tapri up to the village also has conflicting published distances, around 10 to 12 km in some sources and 20 km in others. Confirm your actual route with your driver.

If you plan to spend a night in Shimla first, our Shimla tour packages can help you break the journey sensibly.

Mountain roads in this region often face delays from landslides, roadwork or traffic restrictions. We always tell our travellers to keep at least one buffer day.

When Is the Best Time for the Yulla Kanda Trek in 2026?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (18).jpg

The broad trekking season runs from about mid May to October. Snow and weather decide the real opening and closing for each year.

Early season can still bring snow on the upper slopes. The monsoon brings road disruption on the drive. After the monsoon, trekking conditions usually improve. Late season brings sharp cold.

In August and September 2026, Kinnaur district administration published official NH-05 traffic restrictions, including notices about Nathpa and Nigulsari.

A road status guide dated 6 October 2026 reported NH-05 open in early October. That is dated information, not a live guarantee for your travel day.

Travel Coffee advertises late October and November 2026 departures, subject to suitable road, trail, weather and campsite conditions.

These departures are not guaranteed, as early snowfall or unsafe trekking conditions may require changes to the itinerary, postponement or cancellation. Confirm the latest departure status and alternative arrangements with the Travel Coffee team before booking.

Before you travel, do three separate checks. First, NH-05 status. Second, the road up to Yulla Khas. Third, the actual hiking trail. One being open says nothing about the other two.

Do You Need a Permit, Local Guide or Registration?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (5).jpg

Travel Coffee's published information says Indian citizens don't need a special trekking permit for this route. Still, check current local requirements before you go.

Carry a valid photo ID and follow any instructions from local authorities. Entry, forest registration and camping fees are not clearly established for this route, so check with local authorities before travelling to confirm whether any charges apply.

Himachal Tourism recommends informing local authorities before high altitude treks, and using registered adventure providers and guides.

Foreign travellers should check permit requirements for their complete itinerary with District Kinnaur authorities, especially if they plan to visit protected areas further inside Kinnaur. Requirements may vary depending on nationality and the specific locations included in the trip.

How Much Does the Yulla Kanda Trek Cost in 2026?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (20).jpg

Travel Coffee currently advertises ₹7,499 per person with triple sharing and ₹8,999 per person with double sharing on the Delhi and Chandigarh options.

These prices, inclusions and departure arrangements all depend on a written confirmed quote. Please don't treat a website price as a final booking.

The published inclusions cover one homestay night, one trekking camp night, two breakfasts, two dinners, specified transport and ground coordination. The product page lists what stays excluded.

If you go independently, your main costs are transport, homestay, meals, camping and any guide you hire. These vary too much for us to give you an honest single budget.

One real example helps. A September 2026 traveller's group of four paid ₹12,000 for a reserved vehicle from Shimla and back. The same group paid ₹3,000 for a camp booking for four people with specified meals.

That is one group's historical cost, not an official tariff or a market rate. Use it as a rough reference, not a promise.

Our best money saving tip: fill the vehicle. A shared vehicle for four costs each person far less than a vehicle for two, and the drive is the biggest single cost.

What Food, Water, Accommodation and Mobile Network Can You Expect?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (4).jpg

You'll find homestays at or near Yulla Khas, and temporary trekking camps on the trail during the season. Facilities get thinner the higher you go.

Don't expect any permanent hotel beside the lake. None of the sources we checked mention one.

Drinking water reports are mixed. Some trekkers found water along the trail at times, but nobody has confirmed a permanent refill schedule.

Carry enough drinking water and a proper purification method. We won't tell you any stream is safe to drink untreated, because nobody has verified that.

Mobile coverage reports also conflict. Some describe little or no signal, while a few trekkers caught intermittent reception.

Download offline maps, tell someone your plan before you start, and carry enough cash. Don't assume digital payments will work in the village.

What Should You Pack and How Can You Trek Safely?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (21).jpg

Pack proper trekking shoes with grip, warm layers, and waterproof outerwear. Add enough drinking water, snacks, a headlamp, a power bank, a basic first aid kit and your personal medication.

Acclimatise gradually. If you arrive straight from the plains, give yourself time in the village before the big climb.

According to CDC guidance, headache, nausea and dizziness can signal altitude illness. If you feel these, don't climb higher. If symptoms get worse, descend and get help.

We can't give personal medical advice or prescribe altitude medicines. Talk to your doctor before the trip if you have any health concerns.

Himachal Tourism also advises using registered providers, informing authorities, carrying the right trekking gear and avoiding unnecessary risks.

Save these numbers before you lose signal. The Kinnaur district disaster helpline is 1077, and you can also reach 01786-223151/52/53/54/55.

One more honest warning: be careful with anyone who promises a "guaranteed" lake visit for a fixed price. Weather and trail conditions decide that, not a booking.

What Should You Know About Yulla Kanda Lake and Krishna Temple?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (3).jpg

The lake and its small shrine sit at about 3,895 m. People widely describe the shrine as the world's highest Krishna temple, though no independent body has confirmed that record.

Local belief links the lake to the Pandavas. Another tradition involves floating a Kinnauri cap on the water, which devotees read as a sign about their wishes. These are cultural beliefs, not scientific claims.

Many devotees trek here around Janmashtami. In 2026, Janmashtami fell on Friday, 4 September, so that window has already passed this year.

Please treat the shrine, the water and local customs with respect. Carry your waste back down, and don't wash or bathe in the lake.

Can You Explore More of Kinnaur or Spiti After the Trek?

Yes, but give the extra places their own travel days. Kalpa, Sangla and other Kinnaur destinations make good additions if you're not exhausted after the trek.

Going on to Spiti Valley needs a separate road itinerary and a realistic number of days. Our Spiti Valley tour packages show how we usually structure that drive.

Chandratal is not a short detour from Yulla Kanda. It sits on a different route with its own season, so read our Chandratal opening and access guide 2026 before adding it.
